Resale value of Kaiser? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

OK, I'm trying to make a decision on purchasing an unlocked/unbranded TyTn II from XDA Store.
I just returned an AT&T 8525 to AT&T within a 30 day return period - I loved the device, but given that the device's replacement was released by the upstream manufacturer just after I bought it, I couldn't justify keeping that model.
Originally I was thinking of using an old junker GSM phone until the 8925/Tilt dropped, but there are two problems with this:
1) I feel naked - I've been using PDA phones for over five years now (Kyocera 6035, Treo 600, Treo 650). My current minimal-function candybar is just too small!
2) Supposedly the Sept. 25 release date was pushed back due to network certification issues. I know from experience that this can blackhole a phone for MONTHS. See, for example, the Treo 650 with Verizon - It was delayed by nearly a year compared to when Sprint released it. AT&T is likely not nearly as anal as Verizon, but I'm still worried I could be with this cheapo junker Motorola C168i for a LONG time.
So I'm considering ordering a TyTn II from XDA Store, with the possibility of selling it and going to an 8925/Tilt when the AT&T version finally comes out. (Given that I can either get a contract subsidy OR 50% off of full non-contract AT&T price, the 8925 is going to be significantly less than the unlocked version.)
How hard would it be to sell my TyTn II (at a bit of a discount of course) if I decide to do so? I probably won't bother if AT&T takes more than 2-3 months to release their version, but if it's only 1-2 months I would seriously consider "downgrading" to the locked/carrier branded version. There are reasons for staying with the unlocked TyTn II instead, I'm just not sure if those reasons are worth over double the price I'd pay for the locked version.
I know I'd take a loss since I'd be selling a used unit, but how much would you estimate? $50 from the new-from-XDAStore price? $100? How much more loss if I restricted the sale to a U.S. buyer for convenience? (I discovered when trying to buy a used camera lens from a guy in Sweden that international shipping of valuable used items is an unholy and expensive nightmare.)

IMO what your asking is impossible to answer as it would be a wild guess. As always supply and demand play a big part. Will there be a bunch of used TyTN ll on ebay when the 8925 is released orjust yours? Or somewhere in between. Sorry just don't think there is an answer till it happens.
d

Your resale value will depend on the retail price of a brand new TyTN II when the Tilt comes out.

Does anyone have the AT&T Tilt 8900?

This is the Kaiser 100, without any camera.
What I'd like to know is, are there any differences between this model and the standard (with camera) Kaiser? ie, besides the obvious lack of camera, and probably lack of camera software.
Further, does anyone know whether the Kaiser 100 (unbranded) model can be purchased anywhere?
Assuming that the Tilt 8900 is the only option, is it possible to purchase it directly from AT&T, without being their customer?
Last, how long is the warranty given by AT&T for the Tilt 8900? Because I understand that HTC give a 2 year warranty for the Kaiser?
Thank you.
Anyone?
where can I buy the Tilt 8900?
I have the device listed on my company's AT&T Premier site but have not seen it anywhere else.
I've seen some on sale in eBay
And in negrielectronics.com as well.
http://www.wirefly.com/specialoffer.aspx?cid=21427_d54a347218c143a2935d3b71fab22303
I just got my phone from wirefly for $99 with contract and rebate..
there are software differences btw the two, AT&T adds there software, and taking out others, like worldcard...
but if you go around the forum you will be able to costumized to be like the HTC.
Still no front camera, but i don't use it anyway..
1 more thing the keyboard has different color, i find little confusing a fist, but i probably will bet used to it..
A.
Yes, but....
1. Wirefly seem to have only the 8925, which has the camera, while I need the 8900, without the camera.
2. Could you please enhance a bit regarding the software differences between the standard HTC PPC, and the Tilt?
3. I'm concerned that Tilt users (especially the 8900 owners) would be left behind regarding ROM updates, as AT&T seem to have a rather different ROM. And so, AT&T wouldn't be able to support users who shall upgrade the ROM by themselves (ie - making any sort of change to the AT&T ROM would basically cancel the warranty).
alexk, does wirefly charged you on top of att early termination fee?
just called wirefly, there is a 250$ charged on top of att 175 $early termination fee.
I have the ATT Tilt 8900, same thing as tilt with camera, but with no software to run it, it still has the camera button, and when pushed it takes u to my pictures folder but missing is the camera icon you would normally see there. I got it from the ATT directly with my premier account, for $99. I also ordered the Titl with camera which should arrive on friday at $150. So i'll be able to really tell if theres a difference.
How can I purchase the 8900 without being an AT&T customer?
Thank you.

from what ive seen with the cingular/at&t cameraless PPC's (8100, 8500, 8900), they are usually only available online or through telesales. i have never seen them in any stores. i would assume that this is because the cameraless version is catered towards those with a specific purpose for it (work related issues, etc.) and not the general public. so i guess it's reserved for special order only. in terms of ordering without service, i'd say its going to be tough to talk them into it but its worth a shot. but i wouldn't get your hopes up of them saying yes.
Can't order on-line, so I guess it's going to be the hard way...
I'll have to find a relative/friend who's an AT&T customer.
Another alternative is Negri's, but he charges a slightly higher price. Anyone here has any experience with them (regarding reliability, etc)?
And of course on eBay.
Does anyone know whether AT&T gives the same warranty period as HTC for the original Kaiser (2 years)?
Thank you.
Tilt bought at negri

I bought my Tilt at Negri. Got it in my hands just yestarday!
What can I say, buying at Negri's is not bad nor outstanding. Just normal and reliable. Btw, I used google checkout.
Cheers!
I'm looking for the non-camera Tilt (the 8900)
Negri's advertised it for a short while, then removed it.

geaerally? eBay my friend.
I'm italian, is there any body who want to sell his/her s730?.. i need 2 devices for $500/$520.. sameone?..
I found many people selling it through "second hand" stores in our country. Try to do the same with google focused on your country area with keywords / sell HTC s730 price / of course in your native language (sell, price).

So you want someone to sell you 2 phones that retail for around $500-550 new for the price of one? The European model has only been out for a few months and AFAIK not picked up by networks yet.
I think you need to either set your price higher or wait for network upgrades to filter on the market. It's when people get 'free' or heavily subsidised phones they don't need that second-hand deals start becoming attractive.
But good luck!

Sure hope thats each, unless someone got theirs for free no one would sell two for what they payed for one, and if it was a pre - prod unit...
but there are not carreer like vodafone, o2, cingular that sell it for a contract? and sameone that coul resell it? i know it's possible and yet done
Did you try my recommendation? I found the second hand phones (one month old = warranty) on 500 dollars level in CZ. I think that in your country you will find the same. There are many people disillusioned by RAM, ATI drivers, GPS lacks.
For a new phone such as this, you'd perhaps be better off trying on ebay
Do not forget that price on ebay is sometimes "penalized" by paying also the TAX and VAT to your custom.
My S730 is brandnew and im already so fed up with it.
Im going to sell it on ebay in the comming days.
I will also post the link to the auction on this forum for you to use.
It means that you are not satisfied by s730 and you will switch to different producer? As f.e. jocky.d? If yes, I have some favorites.
share your favorites then roomish....as I too am getting annoyed with my S730 and ebay is calling
It is so pitty - S730 could be so cool smartphone.
Well my favorites:
Asus P750 - although it has only 64MB - the free memory is about 20MB, the phone is handy sized
iPAQ 614c - very cheap, little bigger
I-mate 8502 - qwerty keyboard
All models are on the market only few days.
I've only had this thing since last week and I think I'm going to return it. The memory leak is horrible, not to mention there isn't enough of it to begin with. If I browse to a non-mobile url using IE, the browser closes since there isn't enough memory! The keyboard is slow and if I type fast, misses letters and I have to go back. A few times I have placed calls and they route through the speaker phone even though I haven't activated it and the entire phone locks up. Don't buy this phone, it sucks. I should have bought a Tytn II, at least then I would have working GPS.
I was after something a little smaller but with features.....
I liked the size of my old C600 but obviously you get more the bigger you get :s
and does anyone want to buy an S730?

How much is a Vodafone branded Kaiser worth?

Just wondering...
Picked up a new V1615 (Vodafone Kaiser) from a Vodafone store just now because that's all they could offer me.
I really, really want an Mwg Atom V (details) or Atom Life which has some amazing specs (details) instead though.
So I want to sell the Vodafone brand new boxed and unopened, SIM free and unlocked.
What kind of price can I expect for it?
Thanks
Its worth as much as a standard Kaiser probably, and a bit more than an AT&T Tilt. But the main place for selling phones is eBay; so prices vary widely. You can probably get upwards of $650 for it.
You do know that in some respects the Kaiser beats the pants off that Atom thingy? For one thing, it has a keyboard. It also has GPS and a 3.1MP camera instead of a 2.0MP. There is also a much larger ROM community for the HTC phones than for the Atom.

Hmmm...I agree with some of what you say about the Atoms now after doing some more research.
One thing that's struck me is the customer service feedback about the Atom's manufacturers. Very few have anything nice to say about the service they received if something went wrong with their device. I'd be in fear of ever needing them.
The main things that have attracted me to the Atom phones so far is the use of Intel Xscale chips, better video support and the use of Sirfstar III chipsets for GPS. I don't need a high spec camera so I'm not bothered by the lack of high pixel capture.
In my experience of using old HTC devices (Universal, Magician) and some new ones (Trinity / P3600 and Kaiser), the older ones seemed faster for some reason. I don't know for sure but the Intel architecture seems better than the Qualcomm.
Also, the Sirfstar III GPS hardware wipes the floor with Qualcomm's equivalents in my experience and doesn't need QuickGPS to get a very fast lock in a built up city like London where I live.
Why did HTC start using these dodgy Qualcomm chips?
I'm still undecided...I just hate waiting with computers / PDAs etc...They should just work, and work fast. Maybe I'm asking for too much.
Anymore opinions?
You in the UK? Is the V1615 on contract?
Not impressed by those Atoms...

That's all they could offer? You have got to be kidding, there isnt a better phone on voda, and you must pay silly amounts monthly to get that offered to you.
also, note, the vodafone one is unlocked from factory.
Though i did manage to pick one up for £20 a month on my contract for an upgrade, free! but i have a hell of a business head when it comes to negotiating!

I meant that's all they could offer me in terms of high spec PDAs and I wasn't interested in Blackberrys.
I pay about £45 a month on my contract, but it is an 18 month one. Not bad, but then I've been with Voda for almost 10 years now.
Anyway....I've seen them go on ebay for around £350. Tempted to sell...Still not sure...Still haven't opened the box.
So noone really recommends the Mwgs? If that's the case then I don't really have any other options and I'll just use the Kaiser.
Maybe one day someone will find out how to enable all the great hardware inside the case

No it's not - it's 100% your property, and your problem. That's not conditional on anything. The contract debt is separate - you owe them the value of that regardless of what you do with the phone. Sell it, keep it, give it back to them, you still owe the contract sum whatever you do.

Considering Buying, Cautious

Hey everyone, I'm a new poster here and new to Windows Mobile. I've used Palm in the past but made the switch to an 8525. I've had my eye on the Tilt for a long time and am considering buying the refurbished model which goes for a rather modest $149.99.
The reason I'm cautious about buying the Tilt refurbished is because in the 5 months or so I've owned my 8525, all the buttons on the top of the phone excpet for the directional keys have stopped working along with intermittent failure of the memory card slot. I've found that this issue is fairly common among people who have the phone, but I have no warranty so I'm out of luck.
Would anyone caution me against the Tilt refurb? Should I spring the extra money to get it new? Also, my SIM is rather old... Do I need a 3G SIM to use the network?

I'd caution you to search for the SAME questions that you are seeking answers to. I've read the threads myself in the past so I know they are out there.
Get it
I purchased a refurbished tilt from AT&T about a month ago and it has been nice. i enjoy everything, well, 90% of the things about it. Not once have i looked at it as it has been refurbished. It looks and acts new. My sim was old as well, and i wound up having to use the one that was shipped with the tilt. It was no problem activating it. The out of the box Tilt had me frustrated and annoyed, but what can one expect from windows mobile. Anyway, i digress, once some decent third party apps are installed, the phone is simple, easy, and worth the meek $150 asking price. Id say to buy it. I formerly owned a Sony Ericsson K550i and would not go back.
It really depends on where your buying it from, a random online seller, direct from HTC, or from AT&T?
If from an online site, NO!!!!!
HTC or AT&T, go for it!!! Anything from an authorized retailer should gurantee it to work for a period of time, which will give you the option to return in result of a faulty device.
I bought a REFURB ATT tilt for 199.99 from ATT with a new contract. Its been working fine like a charm. so I guess its fine if ur buying from ATT or HTC. But I bought my last phone Nokia N80 from a Ebay seller. which is working fine too,
so in conclusion, Standard sellers are fine.( u get one more shot with them as a warranty), but if ur buying from Ebay or something be cautious a LOT! U might get a good deal.

Price in EU (<€1200 now).

It's now sub 1200 Euros in Germany, if you look around a bit. Nearing 1100 in a few places.
Price has cratered harder and faster than any phone in living memory.
Samsung must be pumping these out of the factory pretty quickly, and not intending for new models to take as long as Fold 1 to Fold 2.
I can see this going below 1000 around Black Friday, and definitely by the New Year. If it's not already replaced by the end of Q1 '21, I'd imagine the phone might see significant development and community involvement, below 1k.
You're insane.

Really, care to explain why? Lowest retail price has dropped over 700 Euros in less than 2 months.
Samsung are well known for front-loading pricing, and quickly tapering it to distributors and wholesalers, but it's never been quite like this. The device is clearly intended to sell in volume, and not be the flagship for anything like as long as the Fold 1.
Re: development, plenty of 800-1200 Euro devices see lots of development.

In the next two days I am going to buy a brand new in box Z Fold2 for €1.000 or less in Germany.
Not from a shop (several are offering them for €1.150 already) granted, but in Germany a lot of Z Fold2 have been included in a subscription renewal package where people just keep their current phone and monetize the Z Fold2.
I see the prices going down almost daily. It's a simple matter of supply and demand.
Check out https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/
The same thing happened with previous Samsung flagships.
LG devices also depreciate very quickly, but that is because noboby wants them and LG has to lower the RRP to sell them.

I know it's probably a foreign concept, but supply chains and retail channels are relatively competitive in Europe .. particularly Germany.
Probably seems unreal to you when informal price fixing in a hugely non-competitive market rules in the US ... and you just got a Verizon Fold 2 for $$$$$$$$$$, with no hope of waiting for discounts.
Why do you think anyone with a clue in the US buys from European retailers? Price including tax in Europe (which you don't pay) is usually much cheaper than price excluding tax at US retailers, save for Apple. That's what no competition does.
And now you're mad and refuse to believe anything.

I don't think any contract phones have been branded / locked for 5-6 years in DE ... and he appears to be implying these are secondhand contract phones. I'm not even sure heavily subsidised pay as you go phones are branded anymore.
Lowest retail price for sealed NIB Fold 2 in DE is 1149.99 today. It has been lower. Trend is still downwards quickly though.

I bought this Fold 2 for one month ago too in Germany ebay kleinanzeigen 1350 Euro) . some people buy buissness phone cards with a fold 2 and they sell the fold 2 and use the phone card.
Now it is sometimes a little bit cheaper but ok .... I use it for over a month now and I love this phone ! So great stuff Samsung did here ...
You can buy these used for around $1400 US off of Ebay (which is around 1250 Euro, which is what I see it for on the German eBay site). Hoping for a slight bit more of a price drop from Black Friday, but I noticed that Samsung is still selling it for its original price, and they've dropped the price of trade ins by around $200.
I don't know why anyone would have paid full price in the US as it was on sale the opening day at every possible outlet and you would have had to literally give them more money than they were asking for the device in order to pay MSRP; I paid 1600 directly from Samsung's site on pre-order for the unlocked variant and others did better. Day one the latest greatest is always going to be more expensive than it will be just a short time later; you all know that, I'm not telling you something you didn't know. You do need to put it on a level playing field though, you can't compare the MSRP here to the actual price somewhere else at a different time, you have to compare actual price at the same specific time in order to get a valid comparison.

I'm looking to buy it again, and I'm not seeing all these great deals. Samsung's site is $1999, unless you trade in a device. The deals on eBay are ok for a used device, but not great. Amazon has some refurbs for $300 off, which is ok, but again, it's a refurb, to which they only promise that you won't notice a problem "holding it at arm's length". I haven't seen any sign of a new unit coming down in price from $2k.

I see the prices going down almost daily. It's a simple matter of supply and demand.

The same thing happened with previous Samsung flagships.
LG devices also depreciate very quickly, but that is because noboby wants them and LG has to lower the RRP to sell them.

Be very wary of purchasing a phone tied to a network contract.
These phones may get blacklisted a few months down the line if the original owner doesn't pay the bill, or if they have insurance and claim a month or two later that it has been lost or stolen.
... I know this from experience ... you could end up with a 1000 euro "tablet" that cannot use a sim card anywhere in EU

It's good advice, and I am worried about it. I see a number of devices for sale that say they're on a contract. Kind of terrifying that someone decides to switch providers and suddenly my phone is blacklisted.
Starting to hope for a Black Friday sale!
