1. If i delete the files for the demo games in my device>windows>start menu>games and apps does it delete the game or just a icon/shortcut to the actual game?
I am sure there is more questions to come. thanks!

IIRC if you uninstall them like on desktop windows then the entire program is gone.
It depends. If they are in the add/remove programs list, then using that will delete them. If not, the best you can do is delete the shortcut - most of the apps are stored in ROM, so you can't delete them.
Uninstall games
You can uninstall some games by going to start programs tools java then tap and hold game until the menu comes up and tap uninstall

remove programs window from at&t rom right after customization and soft reset. and i would imagine that the java apps could be removed by deleting the jar file off the device.

well you could always do a hard reset and clean everything lol just kidding.
You could delete your ie cache and uninstall programs that you don't use. In terms of files you could remove bloatware by not letting customization run (doing soft reset before 3 sec countdown) and this way you won't get any junk that the carrier wants to put on device (demo games, nav software etc etc.).
what bloatware exactly?
I apologize if this has been answered earlier.
I use a stock N1 with ADW.Launcher and a bunch of other apps. I recently noticed that even when I uninstall an app from my phone, there are some directories / files that remain on the phone.
Is there any reason why these do not get deleted when the app is unistalled.
May be the same answer as installers written for windows. If the developer didn't do a good job with cleanup, you get trash leftover you need to manually clean.
i agree with both above. i found devs dont do good with uninstalling and leaving folders left behind, i wonder if there is an app that clears them?
The best way is to realize what should and shouldn't be there and manually take care of it. To write an application to clean up after 50,000+ other applications that are messy. Would be a programming nightmare and I would not want to support such an application.
or someone could make some sort of app similar to those on pc, montors what and where files are being installed to so if uninstall doesnt take em out alteast you know where to look exactly.
Edit: better yet, the app itself can uninstall everything on the users request! now that would be an app i wouldnt mind paying a good buck for.
I agree, apps itself should uninstall everything with user consent.
Also I don't think a lot of us mind taking the manual route as long as we know what to delete ..
Any way to find out what files belong to what apps?.... or is it the same as on any unix/linux platform.
thats what i was trying to say. windows has a simple app that makes a txt file of all files being installed including registery. launch the app to monitor first, install like normal. in this case, the app itself will make a database of the app then the user can use that app to delete everything catched that was installed. that would be very nice. i find myself doing google search to see where files came from and when i see i uninstalled that i have to delete it myself. this would save me lots of time. i dont really worry about it though i have a list of apps i must install and with all the froyo i keep wiping the os to try new roms. until everything is stable ill worry then but for now im good.

You could have data that could be reused if you decide to use the app again. Settings, preferences, keys, notes, photos etc..
I do hope that the default folder for apps defaults to something like /sdcard/appdata/ instead of the root folder /sdcard/ (unless explicitly set)
I've installed an uninstaller, but it keeps failing every time I try to uninstall Tetris. I know the uninstaller works because I've used it successfully to uninstall other apps.
Also, while I was mucking around, I accidentally replaced one of the shortcuts on the home screen, (I think it used to be the contacts shortcut IIRC(between the phone shortcut and the messaging one)), with the Tetris shortcut. How do I remove this, and replace it with the original shortcut (I did try holding down on the shortcut, but it doesnt allow me to remove it, like it does with other shortcuts in the screen) ?
most likely the game is still running
make sure it has taskilled the apps
some times the build in App Killer doesn't show it
install some other Task Killer that shows hidden running apps like SystemInfo
end task it, then you can uninstall without the error messages
I killed it using Task Killer, and Android System Info showed that it wasnt running, and I still get "uninstall unsuccessful"
Still not sorted
This is a simple procedure to change the interface of android to windows phone
First of all,I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY HARM YOU MAY CAUSE TO YOUR DEVICE!!!!!Guys just a sec! I am busy u knw!But finally, after long waiting, here's the procedure
First download these awesome softwares from other cool devs available on the play store or as apks on the net
Launcher 7(Home screen)
Photo safari(Pictures hub)
Z player (Music Player)
WP7 Notifications(Notifications.Duh!!)
My xbox live(games hub)
Wp7 Lock(lock screen)
WP7 Contacts(Contacts)
Wp7 Phone(optional)
Wp7 calculator
Wp7 email
Downloaded? Now for the second step,Shift all the user apps to system apps.Apps like the phone and music should be replaced.Xbox live, calculator can just be loaded.NoteELETE THE ODEX FILES IF YOURE DELETING A SYSTEM APP!!!
In case you dont knw how to make a user app to system read on,else, skip the next para
There are two ways you can convert a user app to system:The NOOB way and the XDA way!
Noob wayownload titanium backup pro, long press an app,go to special functions and click move to system app Or download system app mover.
XDA way:
Important: Make sure to allow any SuperUser permission requests that you may get during these steps..
Procedure
Configuring ES File Explorer for root read/write access (required only once):
Launch ES File Explorer, press Menu and tap ‘Settings’.
In the settings, enable the ‘Up to root’ check box.
Further down in the settings, enable ‘Root Explorer’ check box. You will get a warning that you should confirm.
You will then get the Superuser permissions request that you must allow.
Finally, enable the ‘Mount File System’ check box, and press the back key to get back to the explorer interface. ES File Explorer is now configured to work as a root explorer. You do not need to do this again on the same device now, unless you uninstall ES File Explorer, perform a factory reset or install another ROM.
Finding the APK of an already-installed normal app (skip to step 3 if you already have the APK):
First of all, install the app from Play Store, if you haven’t already done that.
Launch ES File Explorer and go to /data/app. (You may have to press the back button to get to / first).
If you know the icon of the app, you can easily find it here. If you are having trouble finding the app here due to the confusing names or because of having a lot of apps installed, just search for the app in Google Play Store in a web browser and look at its Play Store link for the name. The file name will basically be the part after ?id= in its market link (and before any other question mark that may or may not appear in the link).
If you already have the APK of the file that you want to install as a system app, make sure you have transferred it to your device’s SD card if you haven’t done that already. Also make sure you know the path where you have copied it on the SD card.
Once you have located the required APK on the SD card from ES File Explorer, tap-and-hold on its icon till you get a menu, and tap ‘Cut’. You should see a little blue arrow on the bottom of the screen now. (You may select ‘Copy’ instead of ‘Cut’ if you are copying a file over from the SD card and want to keep a copy there. In case of copying an APK from /data/app, always use ‘Cut’.)ES File Explorer Copying
Now press the back button till you reach / and then browse to /system/app/
Tap the little arrow that you see on the bottom of the screen. It will bring up a pane with the icon of the copied file.
Tap on the file’s icon, and it will be transferred to /system/app/.
Now find the app’s icon in the list of files there and tap-and-hold on it till you get the menu.
Scroll down in the menu till you see ‘Properties’ and tap on it. You will now see the properties dialog.
Tap the ‘Change’ button in front of the Permissions to bring up the permissions dialog.
Make sure everything under ‘Read’ is checked, only ‘User’ is checked under ‘Write’ and nothing is checked under ‘Execute’ Your screen should look like the following:ES File Explorer Permissions
Tap OK on this screen and then on the Properties screen. Your app’s permissions are now set correctly.
Reboot your device. Your app is now ready to be used as a system app.(optional)
Well were done!
youre ready to use ur brand new WP7!!!

Just buy a WP7 phone.
Oh wait, no need to buy. just moaning to them about your android or ios phone and they will give you free one.
There are many apps in the market that will change the look to WP7. Start with a metro UI launcher.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
The best metro style launcher is Launcher 7, it has a great customizatoin capablities, and even came with some live tiles.(email, contacts, calendar, gallery, widget tile). even more you can customize tiles.
here you can find the launcher and many nice alternative png for tiles.
also if you are on a CM9/10 or AOKP ROM you can find some winphone7 themes too. I can't find the link right now, but sure you can find it in XDA. just search for wp7 theme.
and you can find a nice messagind app, name Messaging 7. and a status bar replacement named statusbar+
if WP7 has only a single perfect point it is the launcher. It's about a month that I'm using Launcher 7, and surprisingly I found it even easier to use than usual android launchers.
p.s the launcher 7 is designed by an independent developer so it has some bugs. for example contacts live tile drains the battery at unbeliveable speed. ignore that live and use a static one.

Hi All,
I haven't had much luck with the questions I've asked, it's a shame these forums aren't more active but I'll try my luck again (and thanks in advance to all those who read).
A lot of us newbies who want to debloat our phones are unsure what apks to delete and what needs to stay. I've found various lists of apks that others have deleted, but with no indication of what they are exactly are. Some are obvious but others are not.
I, for instance, can't figure out which apk produces Video Unlimited, Smart Connect or Xperia Care Support from looking in system/app with the root browser. Is this even the only place I'd need to delete each apk from to remove it? But I digress.
So there surely must be a way to read each package and view or extract the user-friendly name that appears to the user in the Apps list or in the home screen. Can anyone tell me what it is? I would be very happy to go through each apk and list it out for people to then use as a reference, and we'd have one more resource for newbies to draw on, instead of us just deleting them blindly and/or at random.
Cheers as always,
schnidex
Use ES File Explorer and check the "App" menu. You will be able to see the apps by its user-friendly name, and clicking on each one you will see its package name.
- Install ES File Explorer from the Play Store (it's free)
- Press the hamburger menu (located up-left -> Library -> App)
- You will see user apps, then you can click on the menu and check system apps or all apps installed.
If you are rooted, you may uninstall system apps from there (long press, uninstall located down-left).

¡MUCHISIMAS GRACIAS, MI AMIGO!
:good:
The problem is not in knowing which APK belongs to which app (and sometimes one APK is several apps at once - like Google+, and you need to know it, and sometimes you don't see an app at all for the APK, like for most system APKs). The problem is knowing what the app actually does, which parts of the system rely on it being present, and how well will these parts behave if the app is removed (vs disabled, which is a normal way to deal with unwanted apps). And this is where "debloating" can do more harm than good.

True in many ways, but my primary concern was removing the apps that appear in the app drawer. This seems to handle that perfectly.
