FRING IM software, anyone use this? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

wondered if anyone had any good things to say about this software, ive made a few calls on it while at the house, had to use my home wifi cause im out in the boonies.
i dont like that it auto starts after a boot up.
but if there was an easier way to use Google Talk from these phones, i wish i could find it.

I have Fring, but really haven't made any voip calls on it yet (other than the test call). I did use it for IM, but I think palringo or MunduIM are better for that. You can set it to not auto-start after a bootup - under the Menu option, it's Settings > Disable Autostart.

do those other two IM apps support VoIP? or are they IM only?

Palringo doesn't do voip, but it has a feature like push-to-talk, wherein if you're im'ing with another palringo user, you push a button and talk and they'll get the instant voice message. It's cool, but I don't really know anyone with Palringo so I never use that. Mundu doesn't have voip to my knowledge.

I use fring an it works great, but!!.... the sound of the otherside is comming through the speaker and not via the earpiece. Thats not the biggest deal, but when the sound comes via the speaker, the otherside hears echo from it self.
The headset fixes this issue..

Sorry to bring this bac kfrom the dead, lol. But you can disable autostart by simply pressing menu > Settings > Disable autostart, from within FRING itself.

You can also use that with AIM users and it sends them a sound clip of what you said.

Hi all,
everytime I launch Fring, my Tytn's sounds became low and I've to set it again.
Anyone have the same issue?
Thanks

That's just because Fring lowers the volume for the call. Turning the call volume up in Fring during a call will increase the system volume too.

TNTY II and skype

I have just installed skype which seems to be working fine. The only problem I have is that the unit has to be left switched on. If it goes into power save mode it seems to drop the WLAN connection so does not ring when someone calls me on my skype in number. Any ideas how to get this to work as the power drain on battery means that I have to leave the handset plugged into the mains.
I am also keen to change the ring tone but am unsure if this is possible as there are no options on the set up for the mobile skype.
All help and ideas greatly appreciated.
using skype, did the video camera work?
As far as I know the camera dosenst work....
Well I dont know if it's possible. But the Data connection useres alot of batery, so it may be a problem, even if the display itself is switched off.
This phone is sold as a high end Business device etc. yet its impossible to use the video camera with yahoo , sykpe etc. What is the point of offering a front facing camera designed to be used for web type use if it will not work
I still cannot believe the HTC head engineer allowed this phone to be sold with such silly issues
Skype works here on but only on speaker and not with the Telephone speaker. Is there a solution for that??
I've got a slightly different issue besides the fact we can't use the camera. I tried both fring and skype for VoIP, but in both cases the voice quality is always pretty bad. The moment I use the phone as a modem and skype with someone over a laptop, the quality is perfect.
I am currently using skype version 2.1.0.65 on the vario III, as I read somewhere that older versions work better with the Vario III. The quality seems to be slightly better than when I had the latest version of Skype Mobile installed, but it's still far from using it to have a decent conversation. I wonder how everybody else on this forum is managing to speak over skype or fring... Or is everybody having the same issue ?
Thanks

Hi, try to use Kaiser Tweak from this forum and enable WiFi on sleep mode. Haven't tried this myself, but it should work.
Greetz,
Hans Olo
Is there a video option on Skype for Windows Mobile in the first place?!
Guys thanks for the input and help. My skype is working fine so voice calls over a wlan connection is perfect and not sure what was meant by speaker and telephone speaker but the volume controls and microphone quality mean that you can connect to skype as a phone or handsfree phone.
Will try the Kaiser tweaks to see if that does anything and will let you know.
Haven't tried the camera but I guess it doesn't work but that doesn't really bother me. Too many camera's out there these days watching ou anyway

Why do you persist in knocking this phone at every oppourtunity?
Please tell me which phone can be used with yahoo, skype etc? I won't hold my breath for a reply, because, these services are cut-down, mobile versions of the PC based software and don't even offer video calling! So why is it HTC's fault if the people who wrote the software didn't build that function in?! Maybe they should have held back releasing this phone because my Network doesn't offer HSDPA in my area, or I can't get coverage in the middle of the Pacific, or the GPS signal is crap in the middle of the channel tunnel?! Because that is clearly HTC's fault too by your logic...
And I think you'll find the front camera is designed for 3G video calls, not web type work...so frankly, you are a bit of a Paper Hat for moaning about this really aren't you?
[/RANT]
Back on topic, changing the ring tone, not an option unfortunately, least as far as I could find after trawling through the settings options and the registry and the actual program directories.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with Kaiser Tweak to leave WiFi active whilst is sleep mode as it will still eat up battery since the WiFi is still active. With Skype using the WiFi connection to connect, WiFi will need to be 'always-on' thus any saving you make from leaving it on during sleep mode will be negligable (I would have thought). External power (or a huge battery) is the only option.
Still it is nice to at least have the option of Skype Mobile!
Have to agree with you about the phone as I think it's awesome and the best phone I've ever bought for functionality. Don't understand the web camera thing either - just use a laptop if you want that.
Shame about the ring tone as would prefer just the normal modern skype one but it's not gonna bother me that much.
Online on the lan I actually get a decent battery life anyway when on all the time so get a good 4-6 hours on just connected which is pretty damned good.

Actually last time I really used a WiFi connection seriously was approx 4yrs ago (when you could still use ActiveSync via Wifi) and my device at the time would be dead in an hour so if you are getting 4-6 hours of uptime I would view that as excellent!

IM+ Instant Messenger Alternative???

I've been using Shape Services IM+ for a month now and I'm completely frustrated with it. I understand the fact that it cant be connected to data when I'm on a call, thats not my problem. My issue with it is that it wont reconnect when I'm done with the call even though I have set to do so. I also have my data connection to always be on. Is there an instant messenger out there that immediately reconnects when your done with a phone call? Thanks!

Appriciate the suggestion. I'll check it out.
Hi, I'm using mChat for a couple of time ... but this is primarly a Jabber Chat Client, but also supports MSN (testing) and ICQ ...
I've searched for a link, but it seems that the mChat project is now smaper ...
http://smape.com/smaper/wm/downloads
this site is in russion, but the program itself multilunguage support (english and russian, but in mChat i used german):
http://77.222.35.67/smaperfiles/wm/smaper101w_pe.cab
So, i'm really happy with mChat and i tried many messenger on mobile phones I found a link for the old mChat:

New Mundu IM (AIM/GTalk/MSN/Yahoo/ICQ/Jabber)

Has anyone seen this? I just installed the 15 day trial and it seems pretty stable.
http://mundu.com/products/mundu-im/screenshots
Also the only way I found the apk was through the site. I havent found it on the Market yet...
checking this out now. i like it so far. HiAIM is nice, but i dont like chat bubbles plus this will let me on all of the rest of the services too, it's like trillian for android.
I can't seem to connect to it, my AIM just sits at "Authenticating..." for ever
You know it was working perfectly for me at first. Now its doing the same thing you describe.
Ugh. Why cant we find ONE im app that stays connected?

$11,- for a chat app?
hahahahahahahaha.
I prefer Palringo myself. Does all those except ICQ and Jabber I beleive.

Meebo build 15 keeps you on now and auto-reconnects. It will also notify you if it is unable to reconnect due to no data (edge/3g/wifi).
I'll give this a run.
After running Mundu for the trial period, I decided not to buy it. It disconnects way too often and when it does, it will stick at "Authenticating..." until I force close the app and restart it. It's too bad, I really love the interface and has all that I am looking for but I need AIM to stay connected.
I e-mailed support and of course they blame my connection. But here I am using HiAIM and it doesn't disconnect, EVER. I guess I'll have to live with the lack of great interface/options in HiAIM.
I see someone never mentioned ebuddy or buddymob both are great IM applications and buddymob have yet to log me out unless i make a phone call or incoming call, which leave me wondering if it does that to every IM application out there?

If you're on Edge, you lose data connecton during phone calls. If you're connected via 3g or wifi, your IM connection wouldn't drop. I use both Hello IM! and Meebo (not at the same time) and both of them rarely log me off because I'm either on wifi or 3g connection.

Are you sure you aren't losing connection and it is reconnecting? People told me Palringo wouldnt disconnect for them, but testing it I found it disconnected quite frequently and was just fast to reconnect. Definitely a turn off for your friends that have you on a buddy list

Yes infact it really does annoys and i noticed my friend logged in and out because of it. I noticed it reconnected because of the notification bar, does HI IM have one?

Have one what? HiAIM does not disconnect me at all (unless I am on a call, not it's fault though). I tested this by keeping an IM open with my cell phone's AIM screen name and no notices of sign off/on. I did this same thing with Palringo and would see it reconnect every few minutes.
It sucks because I like the Mundu interface, but I can't find anything as stable as HiAIM. Maybe I'll dust off my programming knowledge and try to create something on my own that will have a customizable interface as well as a stable connection

[Think Tank] Wifi bonded to cell connection

With the release of the newest Skype app that supports wifi calling only, is there a way to bond the wifi connection to the cellular connection to allow for calls over 3g?
I only ask because the Skype app is pretty much useless without 3g. Might as well get on a laptop or something.
If some way an app can be written that the apps are for the iPhone then it would work. Ive been using an app called My3G and it does what the OP is asking. It basically tricks the app into thinking its on WIFI but uses the existing internet connection which is 3G.

That would do exactly what I would like. Could easily circumvent the need to be on wifi for Skype.
In the iPhone app, does it do this systemwide or is it application specific?

Yeah, sadly, the ETA is when Froyo drops.
The only skype app. Other then the skype light. Doesnt allow calls only chat.
The normal skype is verizon only. What it does is call a white-listed verizon number to allow data to pass trough it for free.
There is no way up until now. Even fring is now cut off skype.
Just wait.
nimbuzz works it has skype and does calls
might just be me, but i can never get nimbuzz to work for skype calls except on Wi-Fi. the call quality is simply too ****ty otherwise. Call connects but the lag, delay, and distortion makes it unusable.
One Solution
Tether and Skype with your laptop / netbook.
I know, I know... defeats the point of the thread...
but this IS a workaround
Why not just use google voice since it integrates so well with the phone?
People keep saying to use Google Voice, but my Google Voice has absolutely no option to use the data connection to make calls. Am I missing something? All Google Voice does for me is call me from a Google owned number and connect the call... this still uses up minutes. What's the point of using Google Voice to avoid soaking up your plan minutes? Is there some way to make SIP calls with GV that I'm missing?

Nope. GV is NOT VOIP and it uses a standard voice call, so yes, minutes get used. I don't get why people keep suggesting it in these threads either. The only SIP I know of for Android is SIPDroid, I played with it, but I don't use enough minutes to care about VOIP on my cell. If I were prepaid or something, I would care more.
To hack Skype to bypass the wifi requirement, you will likely need to use a AOSP android build. I suspect they are using the Android APIs that include a method to see if WiFi is connected. You could change the source for that method to tell apps that WiFi is connected when it's not, I suspect you would want to check the app IDs or something to only do it for some of them though.
Another option is to try disabling the check in the app itself, but that involves decompiling or bytecode modification and gets ugly fast. Probably easier to grab the app from a foreign phone that's not restricted to WiFi.

Orbot disconnects often and orbot with skype

Hello guys, I wonder if you can help me at all. I have installed Orbot on my I9000 running android 4.2.2 (cyanogen). It works OKish but the phone often disconnects itself from the tor network and I have no idea why. I had a look around the net for a possible explanation but I couldn't find much about it, so I thought I might ask here. Also, not sure if it is related to the above, but when I log in onto skype while Orbot is connected, I can get into skype all right but shortly after it disconnects me from skype, or to be precise, I am still logged in but clearly not connected to it because the online contacts disappear. Again I had a look online, but found very little: some people say you can't use VOIP over TOR, some others say you can. To be honest I haven't got as far as trying it. Anybody has any thoughts?
For your connectivity issues, I'm not sure. Orbot has been getting a lot of issues on newer android versions lately. Could be the latency on your network is too high.

You can do voip over Tor, as long as it uses TCP. Skype will fall back to TCP when UDP fails, so it does work over tor. I'm assuming you're rooted and using the transparent proxy feature to get skype through orbot, since it doesn't have proxy config options. I just made a call with skype over tor using Anonify on my note 2 and it worked fine. I was using wifi though. Calls may have some latency issues through tor.
More info about skype over tor: guardianproject.info/2012/12/10/voice-over-tor/
Hope that helps.
Thanks, sorry for the slow reply. In a way yes it helps, I know more about it now, but I tried to place a call on skype with the proxy on and the call doesn't go through. Moreover, when I switch on skype (proxy already on), it shows no online contacts even if they are online.
Is there a way to change the latency?
thanks
Latency issues are usually unavoidable.
