[Really Off-Topic] Military vehicle on the roads? - Off-topic

Considering I'm getting my driving liscence soon, I was looking to buy a military jeep/car/tank(?!) just for fun. Is it legal to drive these in Canada? I wonder what the insurance people would think.
P.S.: This is just a crazy idea, I won't have a tank as my first car, but I'm interested nonetheless.

Tanks no... everything else yes.

well i think it depends how heavy in tonnes your ideal vehicle is. A tank is around 20 tonnes or more so i dun think the governments will allow it.
i got a good recommendation for you. Why dont just buy a Range Rover have it painted in camo?

Yeah... waste a ton of money on a yuppie-mobile and paint it
You can buy several vehicles to drive on the street. I would however recommend the M1009 (Basically a K5 Blazer on a larger 3/4 ton chassis)
Dependable, safe, and CHEAP! (Oh... and Diesel..which = better gas mileage)

i would actually preffer not to buy a military vehicle to be honest. Although it looks very cool and you can be unique from other motorist, but most military vehicles themselves are heavily used by previous owners
I still think buying a conventional 4x4 car painted in camo is a better alternative to that. You can always make it fancy too by adding few extra bits to it including a gun turret and catapillar tracks if you can afford it
howabout buying a Hummer? The US military loves it because of its size and durability. Expensive though and its definately a gas guzzler, but u get leather seats and sat nav in it at least...

OK... the problem is... this is his FIRST CAR. If he buys a military Hummer (Humvee).. there's no leather (vinyl) and no amenities. To buy a civvy Hummer, you're looking at 30,000+ for a 8-9 year old used one. H2 and H3 models are JUNK.
Yes, the military vehicles are beaten up. The catch? They also maintain the bejebus out of them. (Worked in the motor pool for the US Army). Most of the time if we had something like a T-Case leak.. we would just drop in a whole new unit.

*drools*

Howabout a 2nd hand 1990's range rover?
its only around 7000 pounds if you are lucky to see one.
and besides, it gives a good feel like operating a tank because of the size and suspensions. My father used to own a range rover and its useful when driving off-road.

get an old chevy.........modify it to look like a tank.
have u seen "dumb and the dumber" ....remember the dog van??

How is this relevant to the HD2?
Behold!
amazing! very very nice
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET very retro ma man cool
Cool
this has got to be one of the most innovative accessories ever =) i have to ask: where can i get one? again, well done mate!
cheers
This one must be the one and only accessory we would need for our HD2. We should name it "How to turn your HD2 into HD7".
amazing :-D can you send me one?
found some in ebay, did a search and they're around 20 or so bucks from the uk or hong kong =)
a little curious though. the iphone's back surface is more "glossy" which imo works well with the plunger. given that the hd2's back is not the same, wonder if this will affect the plunger clinging on the surface...
I wonder what I will tell security or customs at the airport when they find this?
That's probably one of the longest crap for someone to sit through and thought that a plunger is the perfect novelty idea for a phone's kickstand
Very creative
OMG, this is iGreat!!!!
You can find it on Amazon for $6-7 a pop. It's sold by Perpetual Kid. It was originally designed for the iPhone but I bit the bullet and bought it to use for the HD2 and it works perfectly.
£4.99 incl P&P form Amazon UK, just ordered one thanks
That looks great!
How long does it stand?
Because I read on Amazon.co.uk the following review:
"But I haven't been able to make this thing work for periods longer than 5 minutes. Might be because I'm using it on an iPhone 4? Slightly disappointing and not that cheap. "
Does it fall off after 5 minutes? Or does it work for hours?
shouldnt it be white?
finally got one, found it being sold in a apple store quite near (5 bucks).
the good news: it does work on the hd2 despite my previous concern on the back surface not being as glossy as that of an iphone's
the bad news: if you were to stick the plunger towards the middle, expect it to pop out in like 5 or less minutes. must be the weight that's pulling down given the "angle". thus, i wouldn't recommend plugging it to give a 30' view. i plugged it towards the side giving it a 10'-15' view and it stayed on for like 2 hours (i think).

Thanks for the update Robson!
That makes things clear for me; I don't buy it. It's to dangerous if it falls down when I put it in a train or something. I don't want to take the risk. And I also don't want to make a profession of applying a iPlunger It should just work 100%, easy.
Sad to hear because it looked like a cool thing to buy for my HD2.

Great innovation which very cost effective..!!!

When I'm not doing dev work, you can find me doing this...

A lot of people know I have a woodshop, and lately I have not been able to get into the shop to get back on some projects I had to stop, due to my arms.
Well I've been a bit of an asshole recently, so I took a break and jumped in the shop for a few hours, to pick back up where I left off.
Current projects.
Matching lamp, cedar chest, dresser, toys for kids.
Cedar chest,
A personal favorite that is taking some serious time.
I opted to move away from the typical solid cedar design, and also from the design that is of one species of wood with cedar lining, and decided to go with a Walnut/oak design.
I've done walnut/oak projects for the kitchen in the past, and wife and I really like how the 2 come out, so I'm doing the same here.
This, is how it works.
I buy wood from a sawmill, kiln dried, and while there are different classifications like furniture grade down to well....crap, I always choose wood that others consider imperfect. I like when pieces have part quatersawn, knots, or mineral deposits, I think it adds character.
Anyway, I get huge "sticks" usually 8/4 or 10/6 which is 8"w x 4" thick, and about 12' long or more, and just resaw them on my handsaw. I have a ridgid handsaw I put a riser kit on, and a 2hp motor the put on a rolling cabinet so I can roll it outside for large logs, I can resaw material up to 20" thick.

Cedar chest.
Current condition, still cutting rough walnut pieces, all cedar is cut, just going to be last pieces put in, here is a "dry fit"
Toys for my son.
Making a set of construction toys for my son, hoping to complete before his 2nd birthday. Working with plans from wood magazine. Toys include bulldozer, Crane, backhoe, tractor and lowboy trailer, and side dump trailer. Decided to use exotic woods like rosewood, bubinga, Honduran mahogany, pecan, walnut, etc.
Miscellaneous furniture.
Some miscellaneous stuff, like Adirondack chairs, one for the kids, and one for wife and I. Ours has reclining backs and I added feature for the umbrella to be attached, still working on it, infact I plan on replacing tabletop and seats/arms with pecan.

Double seater for kids
Bed, dresser, lamps, etc
I made the cabinet on the right, to help organize stuff in laundry room, and hold media server.
This is under the plasma in the bedroom, I have since taken it down to add the drawers and a hidden area in back for routers and a cable channel for below it.
And for now, I've been slowly working on duplicating a 1950's art deco dresser I got from a friend, ill have to locate pics of the original dresser, and the pics of what I completed, that project is more a tinker here and there, and this pic is of when I made the base frame from pine to test build, it also is from the time I didn't have a bandsaw. The dresser will be made from solid cherry.
That's it for now, I can look for more pics to share, and ill upload some time later.

Just thought I'd share and that some of you might like it.
Have a nice Weekend.

Edit: I got requests for a teardown. You can find it here: http://imgur.com/a/t87GV :fingers-crossed:
Looks great!I will try do something with my old lego
That's definitely AWESOME, any way you put it together (or take it apart). Outstanding job, and you matched the colors more or less as best you could, just even MORE AWESOME.
Makes me want to go hit up a thrift store looking for some Lego blocks now.
This is quite possibly the best thing I have ever seen.
Cool design. I certainly like how you used those smooth pieces for the N7 to lean on as a cap.
Re: Lego stand I made for my Nexus
I'd find 2 men to stick under the rails. Make them pose with arms up, like they're holding the machine up.
Now the obligatory request:
Let's see a proper teardown and inventory of the pieces and an assembly video... MUAHAHAHAHA
Seriously though, I would like to get a list of the parts if possible or a breakdown, some of those I can't quite make out. Hell man, you need to make a kit of this thing and start making a profit, maybe even Jerry-rig it with a cradle at the bottom with 4 pogo pins in it and the microUSB and audio jacks, I'm sure it would be a popular item.
So many good ideas, I swear. If some company can make and charge $50 for a piece of wood wrapped in cloth as a Nexus 7 case, surely you could make some ducats with such a thing...
This. Is. Awesome. Without any other words. Seconded for an assembly video, if you ever get a chance.
Re: Lego stand I made for my Nexus
Are the 3 ring like bits on each side aesthetic or are they supposed to hold a cable?
Looks good regardless.

Cool design! I might "borrow" some Legos from my nephew and try to make one as well. Can't believe no one thought about it before.

Thanks. Brilliant. And here I am 20 euro poorer buying a case and stand online.
Have just given me the perfect idea to keep my 6 year old son occupied for the weekend using his abundant star wars and batman Lego sets. I don't think I will video the endeavours - to painful for forum I expect - but if he accepts the challenge will share photos.
He he, awesome. I have some Lego lying around too, I might do a stand tomorrow.
Thanks!
Thanks you guys, for the overwhelming response. I really appreciate it )
@daryllh: I acually had two Lego men underneath (a Storm Trooper and something else) but they kept falling off when I bumped the stand. Plus they collided with the all grey theme, so I took them off.
@bsoplinger: The 3 bits on each side is actually the one half of a hinge (like the hinges I use to get the angle of the slope. They are only on there for the looks: I had no 2x3 pieces in grey, and the only 2x1 (without the hinge part) I had, was in also in a non grey color.
If more of you want me to, I'll do a video showing how it's assembled and what parts I use.
But if I were to purchase the parts, I would choose other bricks in a few places. For example, in the upper corners (under the part where the N7 rests) I've used regular (thick) 8x2 pieces because I had no 'flat' tiles (1/3 height) in 8x2.
Thanks again
YES WE WANT A TEARDOWN VIDEO.
Any info would be greatly appreciated as I would seriously go looking for some Lego blocks/kits to build one of these myself. It's just so unique and not even something that I - and apparently pretty much everyone else but you, RipRapRob, realized "Hey, I got an idea for something with Lego blocks and my Nexus 7..."
So definitely, a teardown or parts breakdown video would be absolutely welcome and appreciated so I can get the same blocks myself.
Lego superman Nexus 7 stand
I didn't think through my promise of euro5 to my son if he made me a stand. After 10 mins he came back with this offering. So Denmark 1 and Ireland 0. Mind you, this country is in a pretty poor economic state - well that's my excuse.
hehehe Superman to the rescue!!!
Re: Lego stand I made for my Nexus
That's awesome.
Sorry,delete please
:good: Nice!
You might just have a good future designing wheelchairs for disabled piglets.
My weak attempt. Don't have that much lego.

(Pictures from http://josephvv.wordpress.com/2014/07/17/cuptime-a-smart-cup-can-remind-you-to-drink/)
It's called Cuptime, it can accurately record every drinking water and drinking water for you, with advanced water balance algorithm, Cuptime can always remind you of the water in the most suitable time.
You can store drinking water project data and synchronized to the mobile phone by bluetooth4.0, give you a full range of drinking water to remind.
I don't know is there anyone really use it, but for me, it may not work, how could i use only 1 cup for a whole day long.
Besides the price is Mod Edit: Links removed, i don't think that suit for me.
So what's your opinion?
Probably would not use it. I'm not particularly interested in how much water I drink or when I drink it That price is insane for a cup that records how much you drink water.
Maybe if it was able to put the water in the cup through some black magic trick without me having to do anything but watch, or even cool hot water in a matter of seconds, it'd be worth it. In the end, it's basically a cup that tells me how much water I drink.
WOW that´ś pretty cool !
I like gadgets so i do like this one also !
Maybe i will buy it in the future!
This is pretty ridiculous. If you need a $200 device to tell you to drink water I believe you have a lot of problems.
Cool, but too expensive [emoji19]
Wouldn't use it. Too much for something that's not that interesting to know
I'm too busy with what I do for that to be useful. I just drink a gallon water jug
Only if it brewed beer!
I will not use it, I think that it is useless.
I would not use it either.

It's a bit basic for the price. If it had a heater and tea/coffee/hot chocolate function/brewer, it might actually be worth it. Good idea, but I don't think it is in its current state worth more than $30. Even if you were monitoring your fluid intake for some reason.
Since I'm sick and tired of these ridiculous health obsession hypes, no.
Now, if it came with a remote controlled heater build in.....
Can you gain root access?

Nah!
Nah, drinking everyday only from that cup, that is impossibru! Simply get a drink from Starbuck or elsewhere when you are not at home and the whole drinking habit calculation fails.
Do I have to recharge it every night? That is plain stupid.
It is just an ultra-expensive fancy looking useless cup and does what regular cups can already do except maybe make you really lazy to count your own water (if that matters to you) other than that pretty useless
I don't think I would use that; no reason to. It is simply a cup that tells me how much water I've had to drink. Can't I just tell that by the fact that my bottle or cup of water is getting empty?? And won't I know when to drink more water, because I'll feel thirsty? I agree with the others, maybe a cool idea, but just not for me.
no that's just a waste of money. I rather do it by myself xD

Elecom's Futuristic XZ2T Case

I think this is the coolest thing ever, I was going to buy one and customize it to look like the weathered hull of a space ship, but it seems to only be available from Japan and it costs like $100+ :/
http://www2.elecom.co.jp.e.gj.hp.transer.com/products/TBM-SOZ2AHVWH.html
While I can appreciate the design and engineering that went into this multi-layer system, I don't feel like a few millimeters of plastic is worth over $100 just because it's molded to look cool. Making inexpensive cool shells like this seems like something bootleggers/counterfeiters should be jumping all over. I'd definitely buy a cheaper version of this to decorate.
Do you know of any other cases that look like this but don't cost half your rent money? haha

There seems to be a lack of rugged cases for this tablet. I was looking for something i can put the tablet into, so it won't break when kids go nuts on it. Yeah, in emergencies you can break windshields with the corners, and if you hold it at an angle it can deflect laser beams
It's a kickass case, and a must if you have kids because if they accidentally sit on the super-thin Z2 it'll bend like a hotdog lol
