What are the hacks and enhancements everyone is doing to get the best performance (speed) out of the TyTN II / Kaiser / Tilt? (without worrying about battery, etc)...
Talking about speed my TyTn II which I got about a week ago cannot get to internet speeds beyond 100 kbs. When I place the same SIM in my HTC Touch it manages speeds of 220 kbs or even more. We only have EDGE network in my country and no 3g is availalbe.
But really miss the internet data speed of my Touch when using the TyTn II for browsing the net. Wonder if their is a tweak which can set it right??
Regards

I always use MemMaid 2.0 to optimize for "Extreme Speed".
That works very well.

I did some dslreports speed tests. With 2 or 3 bars of 3G service. My blackjack consistently got 700kbit to 1000kbit from dsl reports. I'm using one of the media max packages. The Title however is horribles low, even sluggish. I can't get over 103kbit per second. I verified this by running the Internet Sharking app in the windows directory on the device, and trying the same test via my laptops browser, again, horrible slow compared to my blackjack, by a factor of 10.
Anyone know why this would happen?
-James
I take it back, I popped my sim back into my blackjack and it to is now horribly slow on the internet, like the Tilt.
I ordered this Title on Friday, could anything have happened to my account or provisioning to cause this? I did not change my plan in any way.
I'm hoping it is just a temporary issue with 3G service in my area.
-James
I'm having an awful time with 3G on my Tytn II. I assume its the very old radio that has been used on it.
It seems slower than it should yes, people who got 700+ on their i600 dropped to 300 on the Kaiser, I've never seen better than 450, still a bit better than 3G I guess...
Hi,
I'm in the UK and renewing contract as I type. It's a business contract for approx. 11 sim card and 4 new handsets.
We go through a telecom company who provide the contract (this one is with O2) and the handsets.
Now, one of the handsets we've asked for is an HTC Tytn II...
BUT I'm not 100% sure if they plan to send an O2 Xda Stellar or an HTC Tytn II, as they are the same phone they may be planning to send either.
My question is this. Should I insist on an HTC Tytn II or would I be better with the Stellar?
I plan to use it as follows:
WIFI access wherever I can get it
3G/GPRS internet access on the phone
Use the phone as a 3G/GPRS modem for my laptop via bluetooth
Use a Jabra BT Headset
Use it as a tomtom satnav
Sync to Outlook 2003
Does a UK supplied Tytn II come with the tomtom taster software?
If not can the downloaded copy (of the taster software) I have got be used on it easily?
Can I easily put the tomtom software on a stellar (I'm concerned about the problems I've read about the internal GPS setting)
If I get the Tytn II will it be hard to get the 3G/GPRS and laptop modem stuff working with 02 setting etc.?
I'm concerned that the Stellar would be locked to O2 so perhaps less future proof (If I leave O2)
In a nutshell, should I be concerned which version I get given that I will be on O2 and want to use it as described?
I hope you can help as I want to send an email asap if I should be insisting on one version.
Regards
Bryan
I'll be very surprised if you get the HTC Tytn II and not the O2 XDA Stellar. My company is with O2 and we have been sent the Stellars (which do all the things you are asking about, by the way)
The other good thing is that, from my experience, all O2 phones are unlocked anyway (I've tried a SE K850i, a Nokia E90 and the Stellar and all can be used with other sims right out of the box)
The O2 doesn't come with the TomTom taster software though (We bought full copies of it and it works beautifully)
If you're really concerned, ask O2 to they will send you a O2 Stellar on trial so you can confirm everything for yourself. That's what I did
Hope that helps

Thanks for the quick reply.
O2 aren't sending the phone as such, we use an intermediary as we get a better deal from them. They may of course just be getting the phones from O2 anyway and that's why I'm concerned that I may be getting a Stellar when I asked for a Tytn II.
I'm just wondering if I would be better insisiting on a Tytn II or on a Stellar or should I not be bothered?
I understand it's the same device and the hardware is the same so they will both do the same job, just wondered which was best for me given that the O2 will be branded in the software (I assume) and maybe the vanilla Tytn II will be easiest to get working with other stuff. Or will the Stellar work better/easier with their 3G settings etc...
The Tytn II is a charcoal type colour isn't it? and the Stellar silver?
If so, I prefer the aesthetics of the Tytn II but can't just make a decision on colour now, can I
Well, from what I've read on this forum, it seems that the O2 software for whatever reason seems to run a bit better than the standard HTC stuff. If you don't want the O2 branding on there, hard-reset the phone when you get it and do a soft reset when it starts installing the O2 software. Hey presto, clean O/S.
From my usage of the Stellar, I've noticed a few things based on comments by other TyTnII/XDA users on this site.
1. Camera - Quality is reasonably good if you can keep your hand steady while you take the picture. The preview isn't very good but I think that's more the camera sensor constantly trying to re-adjust the brightness/contrast/colours more than anything else.
2. Screen Change (when opening/closing the keyboard) - I've looked at a few videos on YouTube showing some appalling screen change times. The Stellar that I have doesn't seem to suffer from this problem. It swaps between portrait/landscape extremely quickly with only a slight delay when going from landscape back to portrait.
3. Data connectivity - Overall, I haven't had a problems with data connections whether using Wifi or 3G/GPRS. Pocket IE is garbage but the new Opera browser is pretty good. Still not as good as the browser on the iPhone but it's certainly getting there.
4. Tomtom - The full version of TomTom 6 works fine with my Stellar. Set the GPS to Other NMEA GPS Receiver, 4800 Baud Rate on Com 4 and it works fine. To speed up Satellite acquisition times, I always use the QuickGPS software that comes with the Stellar.
5. Audio - I have noticed the occasional playback glitch that others on this forum are reporting although it doesn't seem to happen as frequently. There does however always seem to be a slight stutter when the audio hardware is initialised for the first time, whether playing back a MP3 or using a Ring/Message tone. I suspect this is a driver issue and may get sorted in time. It's certainly not a deal-breaker for me though.
That's all I can think of at the moment. If anything else springs to mind, I'll put another post up.

Intersting, so 1 up to the Stellar

Would another hard reset without a soft reset bring back the O2 branding etc.?

I will probably change browsers, I had a quick look at the SPB today s/ware
which includes a browser with tabs etc. I use IE7 so may go that way.

Nor me, I won't use it much for MP3 playback, I don't think. Stuttering ringtone? I'll learn to live with it I'm sure.

I appreciate the effort, thanks very much.
Unless some-one comes up with good reason
to try and get one version over the other
I think I'll just wait and see which I get.

Hi Bryan,
To answer in turn
Yes, a hard reset would bring back the branding unless you performed another soft reset after the hard reset (if you see what I mean )
Yes, they are the settings for the internal GPS. Initial satellite pickup after using QuickGPS (and using TomTom for the first time) was about 30 seconds.
Glad the rest was useful!
well, i was wondering, what is the downloadspeed you get on hsdpa on the tytn2?
today i tested on ftp server, and i get 15 - 17 kb/sec..
is that normal, or does it have to go a lot faster?
can it be, the rom i'm using is the bottleneck?
using dutch KPN networking, and nothrills dutty V3 Dutch rom WM6.1
what is the Best rom i can use for my Tytn2????
anyone??
it's always the weakest link which set the pace
it's a bad move to try and bench using a random ftp
http://www.gam.co.za/connectivity/bandwidth.php
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1
thnx getting 22,8KB/sec ->182.40kbps
but whats the normal hsdpa speed???
with t-mobile NL i get about 100-120kb/s down and about 30kb/s up. subscription is 1.8m/384k so seems ok-ish.
also compare usb cable (rndis) versus bluetooth, i found usb cable a bit better in terms of latency. but i am on linux so YMMV
We are going to give all the employees in our 15 persons company a mobile phone with a least these requirements:
- 3G, UMTS (in Europe)
- Mail, calender etc. with easy syncronisation with MS Exchange server
- QWERTY keyboard
- More phone like than PDA like
- Use as modem for notebooks
- Able to use Skype
The S730 is an obvious choice, however, it scares me that apparently there are some problems with this model.
Do you think the problems are so serious that we should consider alternatives?
Thanks.
Jan
Going back I would not have purchased the HTC S730. Overall it was a bit of a disappointment. I will be replacing it with a iPhone or BlackBerry.
Hope this helps,
Cheers
Thanks.
What specifically was the disappointments?
Jan
I bought this phone 6 months ago, and I'm quite satisfied.
I use it for:
- phone (obvious)
- a bit of email
- calendar (whit Exchange sync)
- messenger
- voip (sip and skype)
- gps navigation
- internet browsing
It's not perfect, but good for business purpose as you ask; it may not shine for multimedia - due to a lack of memory and accelerated video drivers - but if you don't care that's not a problem.
I came from a pda phone, and I was missing the good old number pad.
I agree with np247 and would not recommend the S730.
This is my first smartphone so I cant compare it to others (nor do I know much about other phones).
My top 5 reasons I would not recommend it are:
5. Coming for a PDA, I would prefer to also have a touch screen.. (Personal preference)
4. The battery life is pretty bad. I check emails, occasionally surf, make a few calls and need to fill her up every day and a half at best.
3. It is slow.
2. Known memory problems.
1. HTC support is terrible.
There are good things about the phone but I always have the feeling it should still be in beta and was released to soon.
Good Luck.
I would consider Samsung Blackjack II, Palm/BB-like design and more free RAM for running applications than S730. S730 is faster than BJ II (400 MHz vs 260 MHz) but it should be still so so ok for VoIP.
Well, count me in on those not recommending you purchase these units. I had a Treo 700p and complained a lot about it, and thought, this S730 was going to be the greatest phone. However, multiple memory issues, applications locking, and a whole new set of issues I did not have with the Treo. I need to be efficient and on call 24 hours a day, this thing is not helping.
To tell you the truth, I did not go back to the Treo because they still have propietary plugs for USB. Everyone has their own reasons I guess.
I have to admit that with the WM 6.1 from this forum things are better. But I would not put my guys into all this trouble for a phone.

i have just updated my tytn 2 to mn 6.1..am having the usual issues like freezing for a lil while but i can live with that..my biggest prob is data speed via gprs or edge..when ever i download something over edge it down loads between 7-9 kbps and if i use that same sim card in my n95 i could download that same file with speeds upwards of 22-30 kbps...is there a fix that hanges theses limitation on the tytn 2 n would my radio version 1.165.16.25 caz this? is this tytn a piece of sh*t tha i should just sell?
