How to replace file in ROM memory? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I want replace a file "HH_0405_WeatherCities.xml" in file Windows. But this file is in ROM memory. The phone write:"File '\Windows\HH_0405_WeatherCities.xml' is in ROM memory! You cannot delete it."
How to replace this original file "HH_0405_WeatherCities.xml" with modified file "HH_0405_WeatherCities.xml"?

You can't delete a file located in ROM, but you can *overwrite* it (it does not truely overwrite, because if you delete you newly added file, the old one will respawn).
To do this don't use the file explorer; use total commander or the great resco explorer instead.

Stop the device from using a file in ROM?

So then on that note, how does one remove or prevent the use of a file in ROM? More specifically, it seems that HTC_Task_X-Button_2_0_30995_1 conflicts with Wisbar Advance 3. Often you end up with TWO little drop downs on the Start bar, one overwriting the other, and that can lock the system up.
Frankly, Wisbar is a MUCH better product, so is there a way to stop the device from using the HTC version and therefore install the Wisbar version?
I've looked, but I'm not coming across an effective answer.
Thanks in advance!

I have "X-button" in the control panel. On the button tab at the bottom you can disable the quick menu on the today screen. Works for me, I use wisbar too.

Hicks, thank you.
But I'm a bit lost, "control panel?" Do mean you go into Programs > X-Button, and then open it up, and there's a tab at the bottom where I can disable the quick menu?
Because that seems a LOT easier than fiddling around with the registry or ROM or something.
Thanks!

Obviously that is the easiest way to stop X button. For future reference, and as mentioned before, the stock file explorer won't over write some of those system files. Resco is my personal choice for this. Also, certain utilities are handy to have for shutting down processes. MemMaid is a good tool for that. I'm sure there are others. In short, apps like MemMaid and Resco File Explorer are essential tools to have for the type of mods you are wanting to do.

you have to use a special exlporer on your pda like rescueexplorer or totalcommander. you canĀ“t do it with activesync or the build in explorer

Hi, can anyone tell me how to remove smartdial from the tuma 1.3 rom, it's slowing down my dialing speed and it is really annoying when I have to dial a long number. Thanks much for anyhelp. and oh yeah, I can't seem to remove the file that's reponsible for the graphics of the soft keyboard, it says it's in rom or something like that, I wouldn't mind it so much except it doesn't have a graphic for the letter d.

I think it only shows when you use large keys.

I was able to confirm the error. It actually occurs with large keys and use gestures selected.
Attached is a revised .dll with the bit map corrected. You will need to:
1. Unpack the attached rar
2. rename the "msim.96.dll.0409.mui" in the windows folder to something else like "msim.96.dll.0409.old".
3. copy the attached file to the windows folder
4. then reboot
Hope this helps.
Hi, the problem is that the file msim.96.dll.0409.mui cannot be deleted. When renaming it a new file is created but the old file is still there. It can't be overwritten either. This is very frustrating... lol

I've used Resco file explorer, it complains that it can't delete the rom version but it renames the ram version of the file anyway. You can then copy the new file to ram.

Yeah I used resco file explorer too, the included windows one doesn't even have a rename option. However when I finished renaming it, a popup windows says, can't delte file, and a new one is created. Where did you find the ram version of the file?
Lets try a more automated method.
Execute the attached cab file and then do a reboot.
Cool, it's working now, thanks for the program

Remap keyboard buttons

Does anyone know a way to remap keyboard buttons?
I ask because I have Resco Explorer installed, but when I push the Fn key then the right arrow (which has a small blue folder on it) it launches the standard file explorer program. I would like to remap it to Resco Explorer - any ideas?
The button is hardcoded in ROM to launch a specific EXE file.
If you rename the File Explorer exe to something else (making note of the original name/location), you can then rename Resco's name to the original file explorer (and make sure it's in the same directory).

Hi goes to eleven (must watch Spinal Tap again!!)
Thanks for your reply - what a simple, yet excelent idea!
One small problem though... using Resco Explorer I found the program file, fexplore.exe in the Windows folder. When I tried to rename it I got a message: "Cannot rename file 'fexplore.exe' Access denied."
I tried to delete it and got the usual window about using the recycle bin or just getting rid of it, but the delete button was greyed out. I checked the exe files properties and found out why - it appears be in the ROM and as such I don't think I can rename, move or delete it?
(When I tried using File Explorer instead the Rename and Delete options were also greyed out).
Any ideas on how to get around this?
Cheers

Windows directory is READ ONLY. fixable?

hello folks,
I'm running a TILT with HTC ROM.
I am trying to make some changes to system files located in the
windows directory. attributes are read only and I cannot find a
way to make changes to that. I've searched the forum but didn't
find anything. if anyone knows of a way to delete/change the read only
attribute on winmo 5 windows directory please point me in the right
direction.
thanks!
If the items you are trying to modify are built into the rom, you can see them but they can not be modified.
The items specifically i'm trying to modify are
the 0_in and 0_out files with in the windows directory
that are used for keyboard sliding sounds. i've read
previously about people using customer slide sounds
and just replacing the ones inside the directory with
the newly formed files.
I asked the question more generically incase anyone
else wanted information on the same subject for
different reasons.
update: Changed rom files!
I was doing some digging and I figured out how to
change over files that are baked onto the rom.
I did so by using Totalcommander. which is a shareware
file system. says it also has a built in reg editor
but ive yet to figure out how to open that
feature...if anyone else uses totalcommander
let me know how to start its regediting functions.
I havnet used total commander in a while, but i believe its in a directory "//" with no name.

Two thoughts - I've got a control panel for the sliding sounds where I can change the sound associate with the slider. Is that not working?
Are you trying to replace the files using File Explorer or something like Total Commander? FE won't do it, but TC or one of the extended file explorers should. Note that you won't really be replacing a file in ROM, and if you ever delete the one you add the one in ROM will "magically" reappear.
If you want to overwrite files in the Windows directory, Resco File Explorer does this beautifully!
Fin
bump...im having trouble editing files on my phone from activesync and i want to know how i can disable the "read only" on these files...can anyone help?
Use total commander
Click on the file properties and uncheck "read only".
Edit or overwrite them

Can I import a *.reg file into registry?

I have tried using several registry apps to successfully export [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Launcher] belonging to a previous Hutch 3 ROM.
I now want to re import these keys into my newly installed Duttys 6.1.
How do I do this?
Scuse the newb question (duck for cover) but on a PC you tap the *.reg and it will import into the registry. On my Kaiser running Duttys 6.1 I have PHM_Regedit but Import option is greyed out.
A search did not resolve it so any help would be appreciated.

Install FdcSoft's Taskmanager (it has a built in Regedit), by DotFred. In there you can associate .reg files with it. Then just run them to import.
Great I'll grab it. Thanks Dave I really appreciate the help. I know you all get sick to death of our newb questions.

Dont worry. I spent 10 minutes trying to use PHM before I gave up.
Dot Fred's TaskManager is a kick ass task manager as well as a reg editor (amongst other stuff).
P.S. Easiest way to associate is: Open TaskMgr, tools, options, Create RegEit Shortcut. This will ask do you want to associate.
Cool I can see how to do all that now thanx.
Only hiccup is I can only run it from my Storage card. I cannot work out how to copy it to my \Windows folder. I cannot work out how to delete the existing basic taskmgr.exe that installed with Dutty's. I guess this is because it is a system file. If I try and copy and replace I get error message saying not possible. Whats the trick here?

Don't know. I just leave the exe in My Docs, and run it from the shortcuts.
Okay. Will do same. thanks..
Resco Explorer will also do it.
To dotfred from your SD Card, do this:
Place the .exe in you \Storage Card\Programs folder. With your desktop PC, navigate to \Windows Mobile Device\My Device\Storage Card\Programs & right click on the exe file. Select create shortcut. Move the shortcut to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs using desktop pc.
Voilla! you are done, go check Programs & it's there.
this is the steps i usually take when entering in a reg file. I use resco explorer for all this. I double click. Then I make sure I close resco through the menu exit and not the X button. Then I continue to play around with my phone for a while opening up menus and stuff. Then I soft reset. Doing these steps, I for sure get my stuff to work. There might be some unnecessary steps I take, but I end up with what I want. Many people have trouble keeping their registry stuff to stick. The steps I take, I never worry about that.

Thanks for the tip. Was not aware you could make shortcuts this way. Running from the card appeals because the .exe will still be there after reflashing a new ROM and I will only need to move/copy the shortcut. Being a newb I have been somewhat reluctant to run apps from the card but I am gathering that is is a quite an acceptable thing to do.
Is there a way to place registry keys inside a CAB so that they will get imported when the CAB is launched? Whilst the above DotFred association method works a treat for me with ".reg" files I would like to find a standalone method to import registry info. So that I can pass a single file to someone else and without any extra config they can import the contents into their registy.
definitely. There are a lot of cab creators where you can just enter in your reg key and will create your cab. Someone recommended me this program. I really like it.

Thanks for the link thomasster. Does the job well. Probaly an overkill (and therefore overpriced for what I need), but I got it to work OK. Also from using it, I learnt that the process simply converts the registry keys to provxml. So now I am looking to manaully create the "_setup.xml" and then use iexpress.exe in Vista to create the CABs.
Is there a way to undo changes made by import .reg file?
I imported a reg file using DotFredd's Taskmanager. Now I want to undo it? Is it possible? How?
Thanks

Be nice Grizz,
Use a good file explorer & navigate to \Windows\Startup There will be a file in there called tflo or something or another. Anyway, remove the correct file in startup & all will be fine.
