I’m going to start this off by saying that this is not a review of the AT&T Tilt, the HTC Advantage, or the iPhone. These devices have been reviewed in depth already. This is more of a reflection on my use of the 3 devices mentioned. My primary phone is the AT&T Tilt, my wife uses the iPhone, and I bought a HTC Advantage 2 week ago.
I wanted to see if the Advantage would augment or even replace my laptop and Tilt, like a true convergence device. I mentioned the iPhone because my wife has one, and so I have access to the use of it along with the 2 other HTC devices.
All of the devices mentioned are box stock so to speak. They are locked to AT&T with the exception of the Advantage, which as you know can work on any GSM network, but for me it is used on AT&T’s network.
I was able to use all 3 while on a week’s Christmas vacation trip to Minnesota (I live in Jacksonville, FL.) to see my parents. I transitioned to the Advantage one week prior to leaving to get used to it. It worked as expected, sync’s to my laptop with Vista and Mobile Device Center no problem, as does my Tilt. Connected to AT&T’s network no problem. I was always able to get my e-mails and made and received calls on it, and Bluetooth worked flawlessly. I paired my Jawbone with no problems. The only software problem I encountered with it so far has been with Windows live services. It would fail to sync completely, signing out and then back in repeatedly. I have had zero lock ups and have not had to reset it yet. The GPS worked without a hitch and was able to use it with both Google maps and Live search to navigate. The only problem I can find to fault this device with is the size and weight, but I knew that when I got it. It is not designed to be carried around with you all day. I found myself leaving it in the car or on the desk and checking it throughout the day. I did carry it with me while walking around the Mall of America in Minneapolis. Throughout the whole trip I had excellent network coverage and the high speed 3g worked everywhere I was at. All and all the Advantage did everything it was advertised to do.
While at my parent’s house in Rochester, I also used my Tilt. Once again it worked as it has always been working. The only problem I have with my Tilt is it has a tendency to drop calls while using the Bluetooth headset (Jawbone). This has happened several times and I have read here on these forums that I am not alone with this problem.
To be honest, after using both devices I think the Advantage is at a slight disadvantage. Now, I realize they are meant for two entirely different types of users. I can do everything I need to do on the Tilt. The Advantage can do everything the Tilt can do, and has way more storage. The size, weight, and portability are just too much to work around for me. I must say though, that looking at that nice big VGA screen on the Advantage will spoil you.
I am more than happy with the performance of both devices, as well as the other HTC devices I have used in the past. (AT&T 8525)
Here’s the other point I wanted to make, and why I have mentioned the iPhone. I pay all my bills online, so I needed to be able to log on to my bank as well as other creditors to make payments. Of the 8 online bill paying websites I needed to access, I was only able to complete 3 of the tasks. The websites would not render correctly no matter what changes to the display I made. As a note I use a program called PIE+ by Rensoft, and it works great on my Tilt and the Advantage. I was able to log on and complete the other 5 transactions with the wife’s iPhone, in the Safari browser no problem what so ever. That’s the only thing I like about the iPhone, and it is not enough of a reason to switch to one, she likes that phone and it’s nice, but I prefer the functionality of windows mobile.
I would like to add that I am not a noob, nor am I an expert at using WM6; I learn new stuff about it every day on this site. I thought it might be interesting for someone to read about my experience with these 3 devices, and how they were used in my everyday life.
In conclusion, I would say that for me, the choice clear. I will stay with my Tilt, and possibly find a new home for the Advantage. I don’t know though, it’s like a guilty pleasure to use the Advantage.
One more thing I just thought of, maybe a HTC Shift is what I need.
Anyway thanks for reading.
why don't you try the full fledged opera browser, you might be able to login to the rest at the websites.
Not a bad idea, I will look into the Opera browser. The Advantage has it on there but, I have not used it much, not used to using it I guess.
Hi all,
I just want to say... I'm so pissed with the video driver problem for the Kaiser that I seriously considered trading my Tilt with an iPhone... and now it looks like it's happening. I'm having second thoughts though because I've been using HTC devices all my life and am used to it, besides the scalability and all, I need someone to talk some sense into me.
happy
Guess I'm the wrong person for this, since I use both an iPhone and the Tilt. Do you use the Tilt just for video? I mean seriously, even with the driver issues it's better than most devices out there. Pickup an iPhone and keep the Tilt. It takes a few seconds to switch the SIM card.
I mainly use the Tilt only for receiving emails, texts, calling and video. I don't use the GPS as much since I have a separate unit. I'm on tmobile too so 3G or HSDPA doesn't really do anything for me...
The pros for the iPhone, for me, are its form factor and its video capabilities, besides being able to do everything I need to do. Can the iPhone sync to outlook?
at least wait for the 3g iphone i think i may pick one up
I doubt the iphone will sync to outlook as there is no util on there to do this. maybe an after market app is available, but apple is apple and outlook is microsoft, so i doubt it. seriously an apple iphone??? i wouldnt trade my kaiser for 10 iphones. (well maybe for the value to sell them, but id buy myself another kaiser after )

The iPhone beats the Kaiser in most areas. Applications run faster with hardly any lag or lockingup. The Safari browser blows away IE and even opera. A jailbroken iPhone can have MMS and now video, but the video app is still very new and not complete. Please, if the iPhone had GPS I would've NEVER gone with the Tilt. It's bulky, slow, and the battery life BLOWS! It serves its purpose for why I got it, but takes a backseat to a jailbroken iPhone.
I prefer my Tilt over the iPhone because I can customize and make the Tilt MINE, and not like anyone elses phone. There's also third party programs to do anything you want, and the iPhone is only just starting to get into that market, and you'll need a wallet to take advantage of most of it.
Think of it this way, Kaiser -> XDA-Developers. iPhone -> Apple
Which one really cares about you more? XDA-Devs or Apple?

I don't know about iPhone, but I ditched my TyTN II last week and use back my ol'Treo 650
FCUK HTC !!!
What? You can mod the iPhone and also make it "yours". Doesn't cost a thing if you visit the iPhones matching xda dev counterpart called modmyifone.com where 3rd party developers are releasing apps daily. It still beats the Kaiser IMO cause I've modded both and work with both daily. Kaiser is slow and cumbersome and with the driver issues only leaves integrated GPS as its only appealing quality, but this isn't a iPhone/Kaiser debate thread. People that DON'T own both can continue and rant about why the Kaiser is better. All they have is opinion and not hands-on.
Buy an iPhone!
The way I see it;
Apple iPhone is a competiter of HTC (everything) and the more people buy the iPhone, the more HTC will have to improved on their own devices.
So buy the iPhone and make HTC work harder for the money.

I don't think HTC is gonna lose any sleep or care if you buy an iPhone or not. They have MANY devices. Not just the Tilt to worry about. Apple on the other hand seems more focused on making a quick buck rather than putting out the best device they could've. I love the iPhone, but when they released it, it lacked too many simple apps like MMS and Video Recorder. If they had put more focus on releasing the BEST phone out they would've included a working MMS and Video Recorder. Christ, they could've included GPS if they sacrificed size a little more and made this thing unbeatable. So for now, there are two equally great phones that I have to use. Tilt and iPhone. Both great devices.

Yes, considering the 8525 I previously owned was an awesome device. Apple didn't even bother to include the basic apps you can get in a cheap Boost Mobil phone. You can't say that about HTC that have how many great devices on the market?

I'll have to agree here. HTC seems to have pushed out the Kaiser.
Both are good phones but definitely lack where the other one shines. GPS and Video/Multimedia
I agree HTC rushed the Kaiser, but that in itself doesn't take away the fact that they have released a lot of great devices. One screwup (driver issue) doesn't put HTC in the same boat as Apple. I mean, who was on the development team for the iPhone? We're they too busy sending MMS with HTC phones that they forgot to include it in the iPhone? lol

Kaiser, Mogul, Touch Dual, Touch Cruise, etc. It's not just one device, it's their entire recent line-up. And while the iPhone can be unlocked to handle MMS, HTC's devices cannot be hacked to add a driver, unless someone wants to cough up a couple hundred thousand dollars. Besides, this is the consumer market. Past doesn't exist, only the present. I don't care if HTC made good devices in the past, the same way I don't care if Apple made a groundbreaking computer back in the early 1980's. It's what they're doing NOW that matters.
iPhone and Outlook sync - wirelessly!!
Hello...i have both the iphone and the tilt. and yes, you can sync iphone to outlook wirelessly.
all you have to do is download the funambol.com client. it is amazing!
go to myfunambol.com and get the outlook client...then download the iphone client....voila....ota outlook sync....even better than the tilt.
the only reason, the iphone is not better than the tilt , imo, is b/c of the gps functionality as well as the fact that the keyboard is only usable in portrait mode (except for in mobile safari mode). This however, is being recitified in the next software update....
so, honestly, i am getting ready to ebay my tilt... I will be an iphone user until HTC comes out with a truly ready for market all in one device....hopefullly soon!
for those selling your used tilt and switching to the iphone... I'm a university student looking to upgrade from the Imate Kjam. I have posts regarding this on the Wizard forum. If any of you folks would be nice enough to let it go for cheap, I'd be a buyer for sure. Please PM me. Thank you.

If Apple finally releases iPhone v2, whenever, and it has GPS, MMS, and Video Record capabilities, I'll be using my Tilt as a paper weight. Graphically more pleasing, faster UI, slimmer design, and Safari? The Tilt can't touch it. Those that say "no 3G" have no clue. 3G isn't that much faster. A second or two difference from my experience, but it drains the battery like crazy. An iPhone can do circles around my Tilt for battery life. I tried listening to ONE podcast on my Tilt and it drained the battery to almost empty. That was one 4 hour podcast. I listened to 10 hours on my iPhone and the battery was about 50%. There's no comparison. The lack of a sliding QWERTY takes some getting used to and slows my text replies down a little, but I'm not texting all day long and you adapt prety fast to the new keyboard just like anything new you learn. I did think it was funny when I spoke to an at&t rep about setting up my voicemail and I told him I was switching between both phones, and the guy told me I couldn't do it. I said "yes, I can, and I am". Then he said I HAD to have Visual Voicemail on my account to use the iPhone and I said "uh, no I don't and the phone still works w/o it". This idiot was so set on telling me I had to have the iPhone plan. but I told him that I setup my account to reflect my Tilt, not the iPhone, and that switching between phones wasn't controlled by him or at&t and that I really didn't care what he thought. lol. I think he was a bit mad that he couldn't make me use the iPhone plan, but if I used the iPhone plan then the MMS on my iPhone wouldn't work. Dummies.
Now that apple have broken into the phone market, its only a matter of time before the next apple comes out. The apple phone may have been rushed a little, but it was their first attempt, and i take my hat off to them for the effort they made. now you know the next one will be the shiznik! if it has GPS and HSXPA with more apps available without bricking the device (once they open up to start allowing open source programming, which i think they started to now) theres no stopping it. HTC will loose alot of money simply because alot of people who bought the Kaiser and other previous HTC devices will move over for a faster, much more reliable phone that doesnt need a soft reset every other day. And mostly beause HTC have NOT made the effort to support their loyal fans by giving us drivers for the graphics/video problem.
1. My contract expires in May. What are the odds by then the phone isn't crippled?
2. Even crippled, is the phone worth having? Are there better phones out there?
3. If I buy this phone through AT&T on an existing plan, how much trouble am I in if I flash it?
4. Since I am going to flash it, what are some good programs for it? Does the Slingbox's Slingplayer work well with it? What about games and stuff. Movie-viewing? Music playing? There's a billion conflicting reports. I'm planning on getting this phone, so I want to do it right.
5. Programs like AIM, do they really use texts and not Wifi, or is that only if you use the built-in texting version of AIM?
I have more but thats plenty for now. Thank you to anyone who opens this!
Nice try - April 1!
No bite here.

Hey guys. I'm really interested in this phone, but I have questions.

1. 50/50 as always
2. but of course
3. if you return it with a rom flashed on there the warranty is void (I think)
4. not sure about slingbox, I think it should work but don't have it. I don't think anyone has ever said movies and music don't work on the phone, so I don't know about these conflicting reports.
5. depends on the IM client you use.
All these things can be searched if you need more info.

1. I'd say 99% its not crippled.
2. No, not in the Windows department anyways. You can get a Nokia N96 sans Windows or an HTC X7501 but its huge cuz of its 5" screen.
3. No trouble.
4. Everything seems to run fine on mine.
5. If you get the hacked AIM 2.0, no charges for texts. Otherwise, you will be charged.
So you guys are giving me pretty good reviews on this phone. Where's a good place to look for software?
Also, when I say "crippled" I am talking about the graphics driver not being on it. And when I talk about things like movies, I mean I've heard they run slowly and look bad because of the graphics driver not being used.
Anything else you guys can tell me? I mean I want to be sold on this phone... I want backup on it hahaha.
For example, is it really 30 dollars a month for unlimited data access? Cause I kinda want to use Google Map's + GPS, but not pay or be near a hotspot. How is it with detecting hotspots?
ok don't listen to the driver bull**** man. The videos play fine. I watch movies on my phone with no problem. I stream my movies from my home pc through orb.com and the quality is perfect. I never get that lip-sync effect. Seriously people need to stop *****ing about video drivers already. Like I previosly stated unless you expect to watch live video feeds from Mars then you can complain. Most of the video lag issues can be soloved by going into the settings and tweaking them. (TCPMP player settings) I personally never had to do that. This phone is the best phone I've ever had and I've been in the phone game for a minute. As for your other question. If you want to find the most up to date software, this is the place. THey even have the files so you can download them directly on your omputer withougt having to go through a millions sites. Hope this helps.
How is your laptop with detecting hotspots? Same thing for the TILT. You can install a program called WiFiFoFum on your TILT when you get it. It sniffs out hotspots and tells your if they are secure or not. You can pay 19.99 unlimited internet on your phone. Add the feature through the website when you log into your acct. When you get the phone tell them YOU DO NOT WANT A DATA PLAN! I stress this because reps at the store will add unneccesary things you may not need. Like telenav promotion, mobitv promotion, push to talk promotion, etc. Make sure they show you a detail of whats on your account so they don't jerk you over. I personally never done it but working at a store I've seen everyone do it just to get that extra commission. You will love the phone I promise.
If your primary usage for a phone is as a multimedia device, then get an iPhone. The Tilt is absolute **** at playing movies and there is no miracle "fix" in sight.
The one benefit to owning an HTC product is this board. Aside from a handful of apologists who insist that their Kaisers/Tilts are perfect in every way, there are a ton of knowledgeable, helpful people who do some really cool stuff.

You can't fool me sir. I have seen the iPhone. I've used the iPhone. It's not good. It's a great novelty item, but for everyday use I can't imagine it being anything serviceable. I didn't have to go beyond typing on both to realize the iPhone and I would never get along. Plus I like surfing the real internet.
ANYWAY:
1. So I plan on flashing the ROM immediately. If something bad happens to the phone (Someone on this board is complaining about his battery and said it was the third time he had to return it), what do I do to cover this fact up? How do I protect my 250 investment?
2. I don't plan on adding those insane plans, and I am definitely not using TelNav or Push to Talk. 20 dollars unlimited internet sounds about 120 better than what I thought it was (30 dollars a month) and I think I might have to take them up on that eventually.
So this is the place to be, thats good I found it then. What are some other programs I can load on this phone? I mean I want it pimped out.
A. Micro-HDSD card for added room - necessary? (Those Micro Cards are so tiny. I have a 2 Gig Micro-SD Card atm.)
B. If I put a widescreen movie on the phone, would it display 16:9? What programs do I use to play movies and media and stuff?
C. How good is Opera Mobile? Worth going from the free Opera Mini up to it? (Unless there is... cough... another way.)
D. Touch screen on this phone - multi touch? Is it awesome? Is the screen good for watching stuff and all?
E. You use outlook for mail on this thing? Is it better to just use GMail? Is there a program that will notify you of mail on the front screen, like it does with outlook? That front screen notification area is awesome by the way.
F. Speaker on the phone - how is it? It's only mono? Is it worth investing in bluetooth headphones/stereo headset?
Thats enough for right now. I have a lot of questions and I am really glad I found this site - I've been in love with this phone for months and I'm getting close to my contract expiring. AND it just dropped in price by 50 bucks, online at least.
1. You are taking your chances - you cannot 'cover this fact up'. Read the battery threads - some have problems others do not - you will find out what yours does and work with it.
2. while you do NOT want a tethering plan you DO want the unlimited data plan.
3. What do you use to play GAMES? Honestly man - games play when you load them and run them.
4. You will have IE on your phone - if that is not good enough for you then load free opera and if you don't like it better then unload it.
5. is touch screen awesome - do you want a cheerleading section? It works and works well - yes you can actually look at things on it.
6. outlook works well and so does your internet mail - they are not mutually exclusive.
7. Speaker phone - is it MONO? Come on MAN!!! There is ONE SPEAKER and it is a tweater 3/8's of an inch big - no you get full surround sound on it. SHEESH!
8. Honestly - you need sto start reading - there is a wealth of information here and you need to start doing some work yourself.

I don't understand all the complaints. My Tilt plays movies just fine
1. I know there's an unbricker but Im not sure if it always works.
A. yes
B. yes. use TCPMP 0.81
C. Opera Mini > Opera Mobile
D. no multi-touch but the screen is good, hard to scratch, and easy to use
E. I use Pocket Outlook to manage two email accounts and yes there are onscreen notifications
F. Speaker is mono, yes. i use wired headphones, I dont trust BlueTooth stuff to work right ever on anything.
Hidavi you seem to love your phone just as much as I do. First off to the previous poster you are a jackass if you think the Iphone is a good phone.
Tilt has 3g internet, the REVOLUTIONARY iPHONE is running on EDGE..
Who wants to type an email by touching the screen. Most of us are ANAL when it comes to someone touching our screen.
iPhone just added EXCHANGE EMAIL support.
What company in their right mind would choose to give their employees Iphones over Blackberries... ummmm hmmmm NONE!
unless they come out with an Iphone that can read my thoughts and transcribe them in an email I won't get one.
Imagine how long it will take to write an email for a dude like me with Man hands. Enough Said
I'd like some more responses, if you guys don't mind.
I do love my phone. It owns the **** out of IPhones. My phone gets more attention then those do surprisingly. people like the tiltness and the chrome and stuff.
Is the Tilt known for being prone to breaking or something similar? Or is it a sturdy device? I plan on modding it on day 1, and I'd like some assurance it's not going to turn into a 300 dollar paperweight.
not really i've been modding it since day one...nothing wrong...dropped a few times and once on hard times...still nothing...no scratches or anything not sqeaking or sounds still really sturdy...but make sure when u mod read ALL the wiki's before doing so
Oh when I mod this thing, I will be glued to this board mashing the F5 key.
I mean I'm just going to put the Kaiser bios on it, and then put on Quake II and watch Lord of the Rings on it. Nothing special.
What should I turn the PTT button into?
By the way, as far as buying one of these goes for an existing plan - how do I do that the cheapest way possible? 300 dollars is not too appealing.
The money I was going to spend on the Tilt went to my beautiful new 22 inch LG Monitor (W2252TQ - 270 at Best Buy - best monitor out there.)
So I looked up some news on it the other day, since buying the phone is in my sights again, and I saw that all kinds of things have come out for it. So what do I have to know? What about the battery? Any new killer aps? Slingbox good with it? What about a wireless hard drive I have, think I could get my Tilt to access it? What about my wireless printer, hahaha ok that one won't happen.
And wireless internet is 20 dollars a month? Is it worth it? Can i get it cheaper somehow?
WinMo 6.1 Official with Graphic improvements (maybe drivers), this month..
Some great Cooked ROM's
Some beautyful software...
fixes...
Android..
... Android...
xD
things like that ..
not so much ...
grrr 22 inch sounds great for xbox360 xD!
Cheapest internet is 15 dollars w/o text package. That LG is NOT the best monitor out there benq fp241 ftw
I'd like to know where you guys get $15 and $20 Internet plans?
As far as I know, here in Chicago you have 2 choices:
$30 unlimited data
$50 unlimited data with tethering (or maybe it's $40).
I see in your sig you have AT&T too... do prices differ that much state to state?

You put your sim card in a non pda phone. Call AT&T, tell them you sold the tilt and sign up for the unlimited MediaNet @ 15.00. Put your sim back in the tilt.
your done.
look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388367
See here for a word of caution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=391980
the prices are not different from state to state; its just that some people are getting data plans theyre not supposed to be getting. those $15 and $20 plans are for non-smartphone's (ie, those crappy flip samsungs, etc). many ppl use these plans on the tilt and other smart phones with no probs, but rumor has it that at&t does check and will charge you per kb of data that u used....its a risk, up to you if u wanna take it
The person referring to the $15 plan is on a Media Net unlimited plan.
That plan is meant for customers who have REGULAR phones such as the LG Shine or something.
The PDA Plans are $30 for unlimited.
There have been things all around the net that if at&t switches your plan back to what it was supposed to be, you get a rediculously high bill. But they may just be rumors.
Nonetheless it's kind of stealing b/c you're paying for the wrong plan.
The reason they charge more money for PDA data plans is because PDA's are MUCH more data intensive.
Anyway, my brother owns a couple Cell phone stores, and I've worked there for 5 years, so I know what I'm talking about.
The only way for you to have that $15 plan still is if
a) you got it more than a few months ago.
b) the person you bought your phone from stuck the IMEI of a regular phone onto your account as oppossed to your true PDA's IMEI. Doing that would cause the data plans that come up on the feature page during activation to be the $15 media net unlimited plan.
They changed their system so that the IMEI used for activation is what the features shown are based off of for the dealer's activation system.
c) do what the above poster mentioned by sticking your sim in a different phone claiming you are using that one now instead of your PDA.

Newegg's best reviewed LCD monitor has major defective problems. And most LCD monitors have terrible glare and fake refresh rates, fake 2 m/s, and a fake contrast ratio. It's all on a forum somewhere, I can get it if you want, but LG is definitely better. Plus it's Newegg review is pretty good.

ANYWAY, what about the other stuff in my original post? How are the roms coming? I was going to hold off on getting this because it uses Windows, but can we actually have Android on it? What are some good apps?
jeffla i answered your question through PM. feel free to contact me again if you are confused. I was assisted greatly with this issue and I should pass on what I know and learned so far.
iv used the tilt for about 1 week now... im not too impressed by it...
except the GPS is awesome. i got TomTom with it.
other than that... it seems alright. not as user friendly as many of the other phones.. u have to slide the keyboard just to type something, kind of annoying.
the touch screen needs a stylus most of the times.. thats something i dont really like too. u could use your fingers or nail but still.
overall not really impressed with the WM6.1 ppc edition... i like WM6 smartphone edition better. also battery life is kinda ****ty on this phone.
its a phone for gadget lover types... overall good value for money.
LOL I've had mine since october. You don't have to slide the keyboard out all the time and my stylus hardly gets uses. I can even use the onscreen keyboard sometimes with just my finger tip. Seriously, how can you be disapointed by having to use the keyboard? Didn't you even see the phone before you bought it.

This all are just a matter of customization.
I am using resco keyboard and I can easilly type with my fingers.
Also using UltimateLaunch witch is really finger-friendlly. And there are also hardware keys - u can install quick menu, amd u can make almost everything using the keys.
As I said, its all about your customization.

As im sitting in court, reading these posts, im just waiting for somone to say the six letter word (iphone)
1. of course the screen needs a stylus, its a resistive display, you can however adjust the threshold to make it more finger frendly.
2. it is user frendly (if you know what your doing)
3. dont base 6.1 these are cooked roms and there are a bunch to choose from, if you dont like the user friendliness the go with a no frills version.
4. i had a crapple junkphone and now that i have a tilt i cant imagine how i even got by with a poopyphone, sorry iphone
5. this phone has a slide out keyboard, were???
6. scratch #5 i was kidding, of course you have to slide out the keyborad to type, unless you know of a way to type on it without sliding it out??
Look in all seriousness the Full duplex pocket pc communication device, we call the kaiser, is a great phone, a power house i tell you, you cant really appreciate it unless you have it. and of course everybody can find something wrong with anything they own, like my brand new (well slightly used) 2007 slk 55 amg mercedes benz, a small scratch on the wheel. And by the way the benq monitor is better than the lg.
So buy the damn phone you will be happy with it.
I was very curious about it's ability to talk to an Iomega "Wireless Hard Drive" that I have. There is software that you install on the computer and it can detect the drive over Wifi. Do you think the phone can do such a thing? Same for my printer?
Anyone here use Slingbox with it? How are the new homebrew roms? Any in particular I should know about?
Is the battery life REALLY that bad?
well i like the keyboard, i just dont like sliding it.
i'd prefer the tmobile Dash , blackbeerry, moto Q, type where the keyboard is right there.
the thing with the sliding keyboard deal is, once u slide, the screen changes to landscape mode, and the resolution or something makes everything a bit unclear to read....
also another thing with this phone is, when i plug in my phone to the computer usb , the screen is always on, it doesnt turn off at all. iv changed the settings to turn off, and it doesnt.
also the keyboard mapping is a little messed up... when i select @, it gives me ! etc etc... as far as i understand this seems to be a common problem with the original dash... its amazing how HTC, and ATT released a phone with incorrect keyboard mappings.
i dont know if it is Dutty's 6.1 rom or is it affecting every ROM... these minor software issues are annoying... how could anyone not fix them before releasing them to the public. another bug i found is when u select the Missed Calls section and then u hit the End Call button, the whole screen gets messed up and u can only fix it by hard reboot.

1. (wireless hard drive) if it is bluetooth yes, you have a bluetooth explorer folder wich allows you to use it as a virtual drive. I have a old pc with a 80gig hd in it i use exclusive for this. All you need is a bluetooth dongle.
2. (slingbox) tried it on edge (sucks) if you use it on 3g (great)
3. (wifi printing) I bluetooth docs to my main pc then print. I.E. excell doc's and word doc's. Thats a good question i can pair to my wifi printer but wouldnt have a clue on how to print. I would really like to be able, but never really experemented with it. I can controll my pc from my tilt so in effect i can bluetooth docs to my main pc then my remote from my tilt print from my main pc. So i really dont have to touch my main pc. (if you catch my drift).
4. (battery life) I am a heavy user, and i mean heavy. Usually i get 2 1/2 days without having to charge.
5. (homebrew rom's) ive flashed a couple times. but im satisfied with my att stock munus bloatware rom(works good for me).
Well both the printer and the hard drive are over Wifi. Does Windows Mobile work well with Windows programs? I would just have to move the .exe's (and drivers for the printer) onto the phone, I guess. It would really save space on the SD Cards.
Is this phone and company worth switching over too ? Do to Sprints changing my plan without my approval,I have the opportunity to switch to another carrier.Out of the other big 3 Verizon,T-mobile & AT&T is the only one that is willing to put their offer in writting to me. The other reason I am even looking at this phone and company is because both of my sons want the IPhone and my wife only wants a phone offered by them as well..
So..please fellow XDA members tell me staright up..should I stay with Sprint and my Hero for 1-1/2 years more..or start fresh with this phone and AT&T..
Mac
50 views and not even 1 response..?
Is there no one on-line that has this phone wanting to step up and answer the question ?
I really would like to know the feelings of the folks here, since those that have this phone also have AT&T's service..
Mac
Not an easy one to answer really. I would say if you are completely turned of by what Sprint did to you then changing wouldn't be a bad thing. Going with AT&T will get you points with your family. And who couldn't use more points with their family, right?
That being said, you have by now undoubtedly heared about the GPS problems facing the Galaxy S phones. Some have found their phone is better with different versions, some claim all the updates and changes have made their GPS unuseable. If you are in need of a phone that has good GPS then I would say you can find better. Personally, the GPS issue isn't a deal breaker for me. I am also one of the lucky ones that find it works fine for how I use it.
The phone itself is amazing. Being on XDA also helps as there are many helpful and informative people. Also, the Captivate has been out long enough that the mods are becomming better and better every day, that is if you are into modding your phone. Heck, stock it still is a good phone.
So it all boils down to what you really want to do. I think that is why you haven't had anyone jump on giving you an answer. Good luck my friend!
There is no "right carrier". The advantage of AT&T (now) is coverage and GSM. AT&T has better coverage then T-Mobile, but about equal to VZW. GSM allows you take your phone to Europe - VZW CDMA does not;
But the future brings change - VZW has a slew of World phones coming out (they have GSM as well as CDMA) - VZW has LTE coming out - which is supposed to be a global standard - so travel issue may be a thing of the past.
AT&T has the iPhone today, but rumor says a CDMA iPhone on VZW for the holidays. But rumors are rumors.
I don't know what you are looking for in writing - all the carriers plans are on their web site. T-Mo does have the best customer service, and VZW has some great android phones. If you don't travel much, and T-Mo has good coverage where you live, they seem to have the best prices and some of the best phones.
AT&T is fine too - not trying to steer you away. I moved to AT&T for an iPhone years ago - and I travel to EU; so VZW wasn't cutting it.
Anyway If the family wants AT&T and the price for phones and service fits, then make the move. But you are stuck for 2 years.
Sounds like it's 3-1 in your house. I'd go ahead and make the switch if thats what your family wants. I don't think you'll be worse off with one carrier over the other, at the end of the day they will all screw you. Captivate is a great phone if you can deal with the sometimes difficult to deal with GPS.
I agree. Go with what makes your family happy overall. The Captivate is a fine device, and I've been much more pleased with it than I was with my iPhone. Talk it over with your family, putting them first won't do you wrong.
My first phone was from Virgin Mobile and was prepaid. I know they leased out network access from Sprint. It was awful. I never had good coverage, and then they started charging more for everything. I left them.
I've been with AT&T now since 6th grade. They've never screwed us over, they've always been helpful, and whenever we've had problems, like my sister signing up for those joke things they advertise on tv putting huge data charges on our bill, they cleared it up right away and even gave us a credit on the account.
Of course you're going to hear horror stories of bad customer service from everyone, but really it's not all that common. I've always thought AT&T had great phones, and they've all last me a long time.
My favorite phones have always been Samsung ones as all but one of my phones has been from them. My first was a Sony Ericsson S710a and it lasted me until one day I was sliding it open, and it slipped out of my hand and into a wall and the LCD shattered. After that I had a Samsung a727, then the SGH-i607 Blackjack, then the SGH-a877 Impression, and now the Captivate.
You will be happier with AT&T then with Sprint. But ultimately, you pay the bill and you decide where your money goes. I'll just add that I don't usually praise any company for no reason.
I love this phone with ji6 gps works completely fine for me it does what its supposed to every time lately gets me there no issues. Im very happy with att besides they make you pay for tethering, but theres ways around that with this phone, hehe ;-)

Thanks Guys..
I hate spending a-lot more money so soon on moving my service (since may 2010)..but I really don't know how I could stay with them.
As to any cell company posting their policy on line..well..that can and does change (with Sprint almost daily)..and actually having a written signed contract is something the other companies won't do,AT&T will. That does a lot for me..and for my wife peace of mind.My boys have wanted the I phones for sometime..I don't want one..which is why I am asking about the Captivate. BTW...Sprint elected to change my verbal contract given to me at the time of signing..and I fought it the best I could without turning my Lawyers loose..and I most likely would have won,but the cost to do so would have been prohibitive without a written contract,or so what they told me when I spoke to them about it..
So..the phone has a GPS problem..and that isn't a deal breaker for me,but I do want to see it fixed and soon.Having a 2.2 rom is what I am running on my hero now along with one of the best looking themes going right now IMHO..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797077 and so hopefully we can get this ported over here at some point..even if I have to learn how to do it myself
FWIW..I looked closely at this phone and also the Ios4 and hands down this one blows it out of the water on anything video..I stopped by T-Mobile and watched the HD Avatar movie on their version when I was looking at what they offered...It was just awesome..simply jaw dropping..
I am looking forward to the 2.2 upgrade and what comes after with it..So..I will be on here more and more reading what I can..
Thanks Again

Mac, just a heads up. The leaked 2.2 rom we have actually fixed the GPS. There's no real problem anymore. Obviously it will become more refined when the final release comes out but it definitely works now.

stuffy is a difficult company but I can't feral with poor service so I disk with them. get used to advanced features like tethering being blocked and such. but you can fix that by looking in the dev section. att isn't all bad though mostly because they are stupid, I told them verizon had a 15% vetrans discount (they do) and asked att if they had something similar. well they didn't but the customer service rep put me on an active duty discount because she didn't know better. it needs to be approved at a higher level with pics of my id and a valid military email according to there website, well I put the papers in anyway and had 15% off my bill the next month. so they obviously don't look at it.
verizons version of bloatware is full blown add ware. if you plug an incredible into a windows pc it hijacks explorer and goes to a v cast music site. on the fascinate they replaced the google services with microsoft services.

I think it's refreshing to see all the honest answers, not a ton of chest pounding "our phone is the best" posts. Most people on XDA by nature are into tweaking so the out-of-the-box limitations aren't a showstopper.
For me, I really need a world-capable phone. My family also is on ATT so that helped as well. I think all the carriers are converging on offering similar product. ATT has less HTC stuff but has the IPhone. ATT is currently behind on Android, but the Captivate is certainly helping to address that. I like the phone and have recommended it friends. Go for it.

I will give my two bits. My experience has been good with att. Cs has never been bad, but at times there were moments that did not go smoothly. Always quick to address concerns of mine and they love giving credits out to keep me happy. I have been one of the lucky that never had major problems out of the box with the captivate. But coming from a storm running on atti think my standard were lower. Gps on froyo still doesn't work perfectly but has had improvement with locking and tracking. Dev support is actually really good so that is a big plus. My wife loves her captivate and she is not a techie at all. Hope my input helps.

It does,and greatly appreciated..
I understand the gps issue, and I am wondering if the delayed release of FroYo on this phone is partly because of it. Rooting and adding on customs roms has been working great for me on my Hero..and that phone is finnally acting the way it should have all along. Removing AT&T's bloatware will be my first priority after 2.2 is released..
I am curious about one thing..I know you can't load 3rd party apps unless rooted and a custom rom..but can you direct push them with the sd out of the phone and in a reader from a pc ? If we are working out of windows and a terminal..we should be able to insert any .apk or what we want.. anywhere we want..can't we ?

You can push them using ADB or even easier, if you google something called the "Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine" or just sideload wonder machine, someone created an app to so that you don't even have to use the command prompt or hack the phone. No need for a custom rom, and I don't believe rooting is needed.
Here, I'll link you to it.

I made the switch you are thinking of about 1.5 years ago and I have no regrets. One thing to keep in mind is the data cap ATT now has on their new subscribers. I signed up when unlimited was an offering, and honestly I don't know that I would have been comfortable using 1 smartphone, let alone 3-4 of them with limited data usage. ATT also had better coverage where I lived last year but would say Sprint is on par within the city limits now. The Evo is a really nice phone (Several people I know have them and are pleased) but I won't go back to Sprint after all the horrible customer service I had with them for 8 years. My local ATT business rep does an incredible job and is a big reason that I just renewed with them(they let me keep unlimited data). Ultimately, if I was in your shoes, I would probably do what made my family/wife happy as long as it isn't going to cause financial heartache when you exceed the data limit. I think they charge in blocks of 200mb for overage but you should definitely look into how much data your family has/will be using. My .02
Edited to add: Depending on what kind of user you are (business/personal) you might want to leave that cog. 2.2 alone until it works. I loaded it last weekend, went out to a job, and was unable to d-load an important pdf that was in my e-mail. Fortunately I had a laptop but in the past I would have been able to count on my phone for a quick blueprint reference. Sounds like it may be a fun thing to play with as long as you don't REALLY need everything on your phone to work. Also, the GPS was horrid on cog. 2.2. Needless to say I flashed it back to the original software when I got home. My GPS works just fine after the JH7 OTA update was installed. Worked yesterday on a 2 hour drive where I only had phone coverage for 20-30 miles. I haven't "tweaked" the GPS settings, just whatever they changed with JH7 is working.

Dam good advise..Thanks
They charge in 1 gig allotments for overages now..not 200 mb. I too was worried about doing just this..and this is per line..not per plan. I went back through all of my bills and no-one has even come close to 1gig..let alone 2 gigs..but I understand that can change too.
The main thing for me and my family is getting a phone that is going to work..every time. I've run into some issues with mine on my job where I needed it and something crashed it. Also it's so tiresome for me to hear all the complaints and moaning when something crashes or FC's on their phones..I can deal with it happening on mine cause I am used to tinkering with it..but I have to say I am very tempted some by the I 4's simplicity...it would be nice just to not have to worry about updating mine almost daily, and just use the durn thing. I just don't know if I could deal with it or not as a day to day phone. I am at a loss in that regards..I know you can jailbreak them and do similar things we do with our Androids..but..I don't know enough about that to even consider doing it right now. I most likely would just so I could download apps and movies on it to watch from my pc..I got a week to figure this all out..and you all here are helping a-lot..
Thanks

I honestly liked the iphone4, and had one for a week. It was fun and all, but it had the same problem as my 3G, the ability to make and MAINTAIN a phone call. Obviously that isn't much of an issue for younger kids since you can still text with spotty coverage(my 13 yo uses about 60 min. a month and 1,000,000,000,000 text messages) I don't know if the iphone is somehow on a different signal than the other phones, but I have been very pleased with the PHONE CALL ability of the captivate. My wife loves the iphone (though she keeps eyeballing the captivate now) and like you, I do not enjoy fixing problems, so I have tried my best to keep her interest in my phone at a minimum. I can honestly say I do not miss the iphone for anything. I also enjoy the *cough cough* wireless tethering of my captivate(free app) that iphone never did get right(and when it did work, there was the whole loss of signal issue). The iphone is good at running apps and texting, outstanding even. I just really need to make phone calls and MAINTAIN a call when I make it. But like I said in my previous post, if your use is personal, iphone might work. If you make important calls, it fails.
