GPS Topo Mapping on Tilt - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Has anyone tried National Geographic Pocket TOPO to download maps from their State Topo series to the TILT?
Other than that what outdoor GPS topo software works well with TILT?
Thanks

If you already have the Garmin US TOPO maps the try this thread from post #9.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=348003
Hope it helps...

I'm doing it right now, it works except for two small problems.
1 - can't seem to load a map file thats bigger than 5mb,
and 2 - can't get the gps to work. Settings anyone?

GPS Reciever: NMEA ($GPGGA)
Baud Rate: 4800
Comp Port: COM4
This seems to be working for me.

I personally love PathAway. You can load pre-made maps into it, or it can download 'em itself from the net. I suggest you make maps if you're going hiking or somewhere where coverage might be iffy, it's rather easy to do.
I've made maps of many quadrants near my home and places I geocache in case I want to see the ground layout near me. And in a pinch I can download maps OTA.

So I've been playing around with the GPS features with BeeLineGPS and GPS Tuner. I'm more interested in gathering data for import into Google Earth or other programs to show where I've been and stats like altitude, speed, distance for biking, running, snowboarding, etc.
I haven't used these programs with any other WM device, but the data from the TyTN looks suspect. The altitude and speed readings are way off, a recent mountain bike ride has me topping out at +250 mph.
So anybody else tried out the GPS for these purposes? BeeLineGPS seems the best so far as it exports .gpx, .kml and .csv files. GPS Tuner has a nice interface but without data export it's kinda useless.
Attached is a file of a data sample from BeeLine, you can import the file at http://utrack.crempa.net/ and see the map on Google and stats (bad stats).
thats probably your the software your using not being compatible with wm6. ive found the TYTN II's gps to be very accurate

What software are you using? For the record Google Maps pinpoints the location exactly. I haven't tried TomTom, but I'm not really interested in street navigation.
im using tomtom right now, i plan on testing other gps programs aslo, ive got igo, destinator, route66. ive got to see if i can transfer my gps tuner over to ths mobile so i can test that aslo.
i do try to test as many apps as i can on a new device to see just what i can and cannot use
I'm a software developer and I have written a VB.NET application that runs on WM6 that sucks the raw data from COM4 (the GPS port) and I can also confirm that it is very accurate. (OK, within 2 metres if you want to be precise).
It pumps out a lot of data but the interesting one is the $GPRMC line which shows you mainly your position and speed.
The only gripe I had was when I had the phone brand new it took over 15 minutes to lock and from then onwards about 8 seconds
The 15 min is about the norm, it has to download the entire atlas. It's only once in the device's lifetime, and for some devices it's already done by somebody else trying the device or by manufacturer.

GPS performance?

How is Kaiser GPS performance in comparison to a "normal" SiRF Star 3 GPS?
I've heard different opinions on this, some say it has weaker reception, some say its equally good.
Personally after few days of using it looks alright to me + you get the a-gps for quicker fix.
Is it possible to show a screen grab AND/OR a photo of the actual device running a map application?
I use a VGA device and find it very hard to part with it...
let me know what exactly do you want to see and i'll give you the screens.
Tomtom? googlemaps? map? 3D navigation? you must be more specific
Here is iGo in cockpit mode. I'm in the house, so no GPS here but it should give you an idea
I'm working on a full comparison, but yes the good news compared to the HTC Trinity (see http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=175&page=6) is that A-GPS really helps shorten the time to fix in the morning and accuracy has improved as well. It still does not handle difficult urban canyon situations as well and tends to "lose it", but that would only happen in extreme conditions.
GPS lock times are amazingly fast for me compared to my HW6945. Started just now in my room and took about 3 seconds for a lock. Love it
Tomtom 6.032
iGo
Google Maps
im in the states and tomtom, live search, and googlemaps works flawless w/o having to install a "jumpstart" app. I prefer tomtom since the maps are preloaded so it doesnt have to use your data connection and also the buttons/screen are finger appropriate. When i load tomtom it finds satellites within 30 seconds and it will even work indoors most of the time.

Sorry... Another GPS / Google Maps Question

I've read so many posts, you'd think I could get this to work.
I've run the QuickGPS that comes w/ my AT&T Tilt. It shows a download time and that it's valid for a little over 6 days from now.
When I run Google Maps, and try Track Location, I get the standard error message that says my GPS receiver is not responding.
Anyone have any thoughts/pointers?
thx
Robert
did you go into settings and change the GPS settings?
Wait. I just found another thread that says I need to run something besides QuickGPS to get Google Maps to work.
I'm confused. I need to run (i) QuickGPS, (ii) another application (such as GPS Test or GPS Viewer), AND (iii) google maps?
Or, do I just need to run (ii) and (III)?
thx

In theory, it should work with only (i) and (iii). However, in practice, it seems people (including me) only have success if you do (i), (ii), and (iii).
E.g. Run something like Windows Live, get the Satellite fix, then run Google Maps. I know its cumbersome, but it seems that Google Maps' tolerance for waiting for a sat signal is too short. And since all other progs work with the GPS without such actions, I'd say its a Google Maps issue, not a Kaiser one.
I have never had a problem?
I feel like i am missing something...I have Tom Tom, and google maps, and have never done anything except run them? Works flawlessly for me, are you guys running htc rom?

I've seen elsewhere that some people that have changed their GPS settings on the Kaiser/Tilt have needed to hard-reset to get the GPS to work again.
So, I would suggest doing a hard-reset and be sure to just not touch any GPS settings following that.
You DON'T need to run any other 3rd party apps to enable your GPS or anything of that sort. Just install Google Maps and go outside to test it. It could take up to a minute to get a signal. It's also possible you might get the error you previously mentioned, the first time you open Google Maps. Just click "retry", and that should do it.
Give that a shot and report back.
I used TomTom last night (I downloaded the free Chicago map but don't live anywhere near Chicago) and it truly is a slick app.
BUT
I use Windows Live all the time with it and am very very impressed how it works. I don't have the Google app loaded so can't comment on it specifically.
But I was having issues with QuickGPS and had to hard reset to fix it.
-Mc
It all depends on your location and how quick your unit finds the satellites. GOogle Maps has a very short timeout allowance. So, yes, sometimes, retrying over and over will work. Sometimes not. Running another program that has a higher timeout tolerance helps in those situations. E.g. I was in Portland this week and with the heavy cloud cover and rain, it took about 2.5 min for it to get a fix. Thus Google kept timing out. So, I switched to Live which waited and waited and waited, and then when it had the fix, worked nicely. I could then stop Live and switch to GoogleMaps and it would work nicely.
Yes, it is a problem with Google Maps apparently
It has a very short timeout to get satellite fix.
This is getting frustrating. Maybe I'm just an idiot. I installed Windows Live and configured it to Com 4. I then had Live "center on GPS" and instead of Palo Alto where I am now, it shows me in Oakland. When I switch to Google Maps, I still get the timeout error.
Arrrgh.
Guess I should try GPS Viewer or something instead of Windows Live?
Robert
Yes, try GPS Viewer to see the number of sats you are receiving.

Well. Downloaded GPS Test (not GPS Viewer) and it shows about 3 satellites (usually 2 are green, 1 yellow). At the minimum, I have one yellow bar. I'm on the 6th floor with a large window that I can see a HUGE amount of sky out of. So I'm kind of disappointed. (Well, now I show no satellites).
It's been indicating "GPS Starting up" for over 3 minutes.
Google Maps still won't get GPS to work
Anyone have any idea what's going on?
Robert
i had alot of google map problems also. after setting to com 4 and 4800 baud go outside and try the track location feature. also it helps if its not too cloudy. Most of the times I was testing it I was inside the house which didnt work.
FYI. GPS Viewer has the following error on my device:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
Robert
... and where do I find GPS Viewer? As far as I can tell, it is not on my phone..?
You need to download it, search the forum. there is a link to the site/file somewhere
found another cool one, free http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/
Just a followup. I downloaded GPSViewer from another site. It works. And now Google Maps works.
Evidently GPS Test just wasn't enough by itself.
Thanks all.
Robert
Strangely I have the opposite problem, GPSViewer can never get a satellite lock, I can leave it for minutes and nothing, but load up Google Maps and within seconds... there I am.... :-D

TD's GPS thread

Hi all,
Could you please, be kind and post you experience with TD's GPS...
Since I got my TD(4 days) I have not been able to test the GPS at all
I have loaded some soft that could help me here. ( I travel a lot between Korea and Japan). Cannot really use the phone here, but WIFI works great and I thought I would give the GPS a test run.....no luck YET..
TD's own: QuickGPS has downloaded(through WIFI) all the info and it is up to date......But how do I set up the GPS itself???
Phone did not come with preloaded GPS software so,I have loaded following soft on itnone of them would recognize the gps)
i.e. " no GPS found."
1.Google Navigator 3.4
2.GPSvp (http://gpsvp.com)
3.Effica GPS Utilities (http://www.efficasoft.com/gpsutilities/index_wm_ppc.html)
I would really like to test out the GPS here first.I am returning to EU (home) in october or november and I would like to use it there as well.
sorry for the bump
I tried the search...not just this forum but all of XDA.....I cannot seem to find one successful step-by step activation as of yet???
Nobody has internal GPS running on their TD??
Anyone?
Runs perfect and is good quality.
Make sure you let windows manage gps (in external GPS settings):
programport COM4
hardwareport none
and in last tap check the checkbox.
Programs find gps at Com4 at 19xxx baud.
THX RIEL
thank You for you reply.
Will try tommorow morning.

Don't you have a problem with the static navigation? This behavior "drives"
me nearly crazy, because beside of that, the GPS in TD is superb...
On mine, no programs can access the GPS and the programs will lock and crash the phone when it tries to connect to GPS.
The onlt one that does not lock the phone is TomTom, but it wont connect to GPS.
I've tried combinations of the recommended port stttings, but I still get no GPS.
I have not activated A-GPS, so I don't know if the phone came with this already activated - how would I check this?
My GPS is a pain in the arse, From what i have read its because of the static navigation. So far it says i live in house number 20 when I live in house number 16 and when i'm on route I'm yet to hear a " You have arrived at your destination" because its accuracy is off about 50 metres.
Hopefully there will be a fix for this very soon.
can someone get me up to speed a bit? what is the 'static navigation' that i keep hearing about..
admittedly, i find sometimes the gps is slightly less accurate at placing my exact location compared to my old Trinity, but otherwise its worked great for me..

Hey, have you got installed TomTom 7? I'm running TT7 and when I select "internal GPS receiver" it connects perfect. I know this doesn't exist in TT6, but I can also get my GPS running in TT7 if I set it to use a BT receiver on COM4 at 57600 baud. (Assuming you didn't mess around with the standard GPS settings, like HTC meant them to be )
Google maps is using the selection of "use windows settings".

hi guys
Same problem here. AGPS is disabled. I have tried Garmin,TomTom, iGo and google. 95% of the time it can not lock onto the sats. Once in a while it will work fine. Last night it picked up the sats in my bedroom on the second story and this morning outside in clear sky it found 4 sats but with very low signal and could not give me my cordinates, gave up after 15 min.
I have tried GPS tools and even that won't lock onto the sats. Data is upto date with quick gps.
So is it the hardware problem or has it to do something with radio? It can't be faulty TD because there are a lots of people with the same problem, and why lots of other users have no problems accessing the sats?
How is your gps working?
hi
great going sofar...thanks to all. We still have no real answers.
Let's keep this one going.
Looks like GPS is an issue with TD.
( Other than GPS...I am loving this sweet phone )
Now I am trying different roms to see if it is related to that. Will let you guys know if find anything.
Strange, on all ROMS my GPS reciever just works perfect.
Almost the best piece of hardware on the device
As I mentioned in Another topic, I use the GPS for TrackMe, at the same time I am navigation via Igo, and at the same time I showoff Google Maps with GPS support.
It functions very well!
Did you get the GPS-Fix downloads? It speeds up a lot.
Yes got the gps fix downloads but still no go. Still have not lost the hope. I hope its not some hardware problem.
I was fed up messing with mine, so I did a hard reset, and its sorted ...... for now!
same as Paulus
I did a hard reset....and it works perfect. No other adjustments done.
Tried the TomTom, Tracky Pro, GPS VP, and the HTC GPS Tool....all work no problem...outside I get a fix within a minute sometimes seconds.
I think one of the quirks that the TD's GPS has is that, when it's in Acquiring Satellites mode it doesn't seem to spit out any sort of status. The first time I noticed that I thought my internal GPS wasn't working, since with my external Holux unit I can see the satellites which the Holux was trying to lock onto.
Whereas with the TD's built in GPS it just snaps from nothing to.. acquired. So it's hard to see wheter it hasn't gotten a signal because it's in a poor area of reception or not. Usually I'll just try and stay still till I can get a lock.

igo GPS problem.

My gps is connection is too slow. I am in the middle of copenhagen but it takes minutes to find my location in IGO also i lost connection frequently
my port is and baud rate is57600.
Any idea would help me.
thanks
I guess there are three things you can do:
1. Input your port and baud rate in the GPS parameters setting,
2. Reset your GPS to see whether it is quicker.
3. Sometimes too much information displayed in the map makes your GPS slow. So you could hide some unnecessary items.
If it still doesn't work well, you can contact the customer service for help.
GPS is actually very fast once it has acquired its satellites — it can update your position several times each second. The other problem in urban environments is that tall buildings make it difficult for the GPS to see enough satellites.
It has nothing to do with IGO. Replace your radio for newer version. like one of 1.15
