Deleting protected system files

I'm trying to delete BrandedBrowser.exe so I can replace it with iexplorer.exe but WM5 is refusing because it;s a protected system file. Howto go about deleting/replacing the file?

Protected files cannot be removed AFAIK but you can 'replace' them with a file with the exact same name.

And how do I do that? Just copy over it? Like I sadi I'm trying to replace brandedBrowser.exe with iexplore.exe but when I try to copy iexlore.exe it sais access denied.

I don't understand: do you have both files on your PPC? And if so, why don't you simply create/edit a link that points to iexplore.exe?

Okay let me explain it. I have a T-Mobile MDA Vario which comes branded with alot of T-Mobile stuff.
Alot of good stuff but some bad and one really annoying one, everytime you start Internet Explorer a popup comes up asking "Do you want to connect to the internet" Ok/Cancel.
By looking at the cab files in the extended rom I've been able to disable this when you start iexplore.exe.
Now also the Vario comes with a custom T-Mobile today plugin which allows you do a few stuff one of which is start Internet Explorer.
What this plugin does is, when you click the internet icon, instead of starting iexplore.exe start BrandedBrowser.exe.
BrandedBrowser.exe is basicly the same as iexplore.exe but with a different icon and also it shows the annoying popup.
Now since BrandedBrowser.exe and iexplore.exe basicly do the same I want to replace BrandedBrowser.exe with iexplore.exe.
And yes both files are on the device under \Windows
I've tried editing HTCTodayScreen.dll with a resource editor but that doesn't work, I'm guessing the applications need to be signed or something.

If I were you, I would just upgrade to the latest (Qtek) Rom.
Then your problem is solved and you will be up-to-date and have a good (fast) Rom.

The thing is that I don't need the AKU2 stuff added in the latest ROM and I really like the added functionality of the T-Mobile ROM. And I dread that QTek bootscreen, it's horrible and there's no sollution to change the bootscreen of the AKU2 roms.

Mr. Clean 2.24a AKU2.3 Rom with Dutch language (how-to)

Today I had some talks with Risidoro and Asukal about changing languages on Roms without upgrading to a whole new Rom.
Risidoro introduced me to Asukal after a question from me about Rom Cooking.
After some talking with Asukal about his "UI Language Switch Program" for Universal he gave me some files that I tested a few times.
Right now I am running a fully stable Mr. Clean 2.24a AKU2.3 Rom with dutch language, so for all dutch folks, here you go...
UPDATE: Right now I am running the latest 2.26 T-Mobile Rom, without problems!
[EDIT FRIDAY, 28th JULI]:
FINAL INSTRUCTIONS (for now....)
Definitive instructions to change the English Mr. Clean 2.24a AKU2.3 Rom into the Dutch language
- Install the Mr. Clean Rom
- Install these 5 files, I installed everything to the Main Memory, I advice you all to do the same!
1) Wizard_AKU2_NLD_mui_Tool.cab
2) NLD_Notifications_WIZ.cab
3) NLD_Today_113.cab
4) DUT_SMS.cab
5) NLD_Registry_Changes.cab
- Soft-reset your Wizard by turning it off and on (not with the Soft-Reset button!)
- Run through the (Dutch) Welcome Screen for screen alignment etc.
- Go to Settings -> Regional Settings (Instellingen -> Landinstellingen) and set it to Nederlands
- Delete the file \Windows\initobj.dat and rename \Windows\welcome.lnk to something like welcome.bak.lnk
- Delete the folder "\Program Files"
- Delete the folder "\Windows\Fonts"
- Delete the folder "\Windows\Favorites"
- Delete the folder "\Windows\Programs"
- Delete the folder "\Windows\Start Menu"
- Delete the folder "\Windows\Start Up"
- Delete the folder "\Windows\PDFfonts" (optional, but I did it to get 2MB extra free space because I don't use ClearVue PDF!)
- Remove all English folders in \My Documents (EXCEPT THE TEMPLATES FOLDER, in this folder the Camera Templates will be stored!)
So you can delete the Camera Templates from \My documents\Sjablonen
- Soft-reset your Wizard by turning it off and on (not with the Soft-Reset button!)
- Run these 2 files (located in this thread, somewhere below on the 1st page)
1) MP-Shorcut-MMS1-Voice-CV-TMUS-060404.CAB
2) NLD_MMS_FOLDER.CAB
- Done!

Any suggestions, tried total comander and the windows explorer...
edit: Solved the problem on my own: First with total commander tap'nhold --> properties and disable the read only checkbox.
then goto shortcut tab and edit this to something....
then it is possible te rename..
Yeah not beautiful... but it works so what the heck....

It will work on AKU2.5 after some development from Asukal and some testing from me, offcourse when I got it working, you all will get it working

My litle contribution to this fantastic idea
For the Dutch T9 follow the next steps:
In the attachment are three files:
1 - dictprob.dat
2 - statdict.dat
3 - mssp2_nl.lex
Copy them to the \Windows dir and replace existing files.
Then make the following changes to the registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Spell Check]
"Main_Dict"="\Windows\mssp2_nl.lex"
Restart your device and it should work like a charm

Uncheck the read-only for this file and then go to the properties and remove the entry, OR rename the file like I did to something as welcome.bak.lnk

Here it is, the CAB file with the registry changes, with the files for T9 including one extra file (autocorrect.txt) from a dutch Rom, for (I guess) spellchecking.
I installed the file on my device and got no problems, I don't wanna say it is 100% correct, but I really guess it is, so were heading for 5 final files for installing Dutch Language on EVERY Non dutch Rom
By the way...don't forget to delete the old English subfolders of My Documents guys

I don't mind that the welcome.lnk stays. It only lets you run the welcome screen once, in Dutch. After that it doesn't show up anymore.
I followed the instructions about the ReadOnly settings, but like I said it looks like it changes the name of the file. But after a refresh it's back again

I updated my NLD_Registry_Changes.CAB file.
Because the Camera has some problems, although I change the "Frames" string, every time you select a picture template the setting is resetted.
So the solution is to delete every English subfolder of My Documents EXCEPT for Templates (!!), but on the other hand, it's not a bad idea to have al the camera templates in a seperate directory

Yes, but please read the 1st again, I updated the post with final instructions (for now....)

I also tested this language Pack on the new T-Mobile 2.26 Rom and I can confirm it's also working on the new Rom.
My advice for now is, don't use the Mr. Clean Rom anymore, but the new T-Mobile 2.26 Rom and don't install the Extended Rom to keep it as clean as possible (or manually select what you want to install).

Hmmm... ..just came to tell you that I also run the latest T-Mobile ROM in Dutch now. No problems so far! 8)

I really find it very cool that we don't have to wait anymore for Roms in dutch!
We just grab the latest WWE Roms and turn it into Dutch, no problem
The Mr. Clean Rom was cool to test with, but I'm happy with the 2.26 Rom.

Nope, not explictit for the Wizard, only for Universal.
These packages that I am using now were custom created by Asukal especially for the Wizard!

Pocket Internet Explorer update Trinity-Hermes

Hi, I'm having a HTC Hermes, and since AKU3 and WM6 ROMs the Pocket Internet Explorer have a bug. It doesn't send the User Agent String anymore. This bug causes no access to provider-multimedia-content anymore.
On Trinity-HTC-ROMs the PIE does work, but I have no Trinity.
Can somebody please help and zip or rar the 4 hidden files in Windows Directory on Trinity starting with "ie"..
The files are in ROM-Memory, so you have to unhide and select the files and say Duplicate by tap&hold in Resco Explorer.
Then you get 4 files in Windows-Dir starting with "Copy of IE..."
These files can be copied outside of Windows to a zip and posted here if anybody want to help us Hermes-Owners.

that's a standard header on all User-Agent Strings... I suggest you get the regular one for IE from WM5 and port it across.

IE User Agent String and VodafoneLive!

Hi,
I've been trying to change the User Agent string in Internet Explorer so I can browse Vodafone Live! and watch Mobile TV on my P3600. Vodafone Live! can only be accessed by supported phone models, so one has to trick the website into thinking your unsupported phone is one of the supported models. In newer versions of Internet Explorer mobile, this is done by modifying the hardcoded User Agent string in the \Windows\browser.dll file, and various members have kindly released such modified files with different browser identifiers.
From visiting http://www.useragentstring.com/, we can see some extra custom data (found in the registry) is appended to the hard coded user agent string. I apologise if this has been suggested before, but instead of releasing many versions of browser.dll files to spoof different phones, why not erase the hard-coded string entirely and just use the custom data to set the User Agent from the registry. Here's what I did...
I extracted the browser.dll file from mun_rus' cooked rom: mUn_1.25.TE_AKU3.5.2_WWE, but I assume this file will be compatible with all AKU 3.5.2 builds (Someone please confirm this; if you are not using the same ROM, I would advise not to use the attached files until someone has confirmed it). Initially, the hard-coded string read:
"Mozilla/4.0 %s (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile %d.%d)"
I overwrote the entire string (apart from the %s) with 0x00's (Hex), saved the file and uploaded it to my phone.
Now if I set the value of the registry key "Custom", located at:
HKLM\Security\Internet Explorer\User Agent
to:
"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 6.8) PPC; 240x320; HTC_P3600/1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1"
The browser performs exactly as before. However, the advantage now is that when I want to watch Mobile TV or browse Vodafone Live, I can simply set the "Custom" registry key to:
"Nokia6233/2.0 (03.46) Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 RSS Reader 1.18, Nokia6233/2.0 (03.46) Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UNTRUSTED/1.0"
I have shared some automated installer cab files which will make these modifications without having to go through all the trouble of extracting files from roms, and hex/reg editing. They are as follows:
[*]AKU352_dlls.zip: contains 2 files to be copied to your PPC.
Run modified_AKU352_browserdll.cab to replace the original browser.dll with one that does not have a hard coded user agent string.
Run orig_AKU352_browserdll.cab to restore your browser.dll with the original one from mun_rus' rom.
IE_HTC_P3600.cab : set the User Agent string to simulate a HTC P3600
IE_Nokia6233.cab : set the User Agent string to simulate a Nokia 6233 (which gives access to Vodafone Live!)
Now you can change between HTC_P3600 and Nokia 6233 by simply running a cab file, (which only changes some registry data)!
PS, if people think this is a good idea maybe mun_rus and lvsw could include this modification in their future cooked roms? Otherwise, i'll update this thread with new dll's when new roms are released

Since AKU 3.3 and WM6, tools which change the user agent string (such as PIEPlus) have not worked due to the hard coding of the user agent string in the browser.dll file. I did try the new version of PIEPlus myself, but visiting www.useragentstring.com reveals that nothing is changed. Someone pointed out this fact in this thread. I also tried a number of other tools, and even changing the registy values manually myself, without any luck.
For now, it seems the only way is to modify the browser.dll file. I've given full instructions how to do this since I'm not sure whether it is safe or not to copy this file across different builds of Windows Mobile. Blanking out the hard coded string seems the most generic thing to do - that way you dont have to keep overwriting the dll when you want to spoof different phone models/browsers. Once the modified dll is in place, you can go along to the specified registry key and insert your own user agent string (incase the Nokia 6233 isnt the one you were after).

How did you extract and modify the browser.dll.
I want to extract and modify the browser.dll from my TyTN II, however i cannot copy it from the windows directory.

You will need to find the rom you flashed your phone with, then using the ImgFS tools, extract the relevant file from the rom. HexEdit the file as described, then use WinCE Cab manager to make a cab and replace the file in the windows directory on your phone.

No, dont change "CustomBase", only erase the parts I have described. This excludes the %s but includes the %d's

AKU352_dlls.zip works on my p3600 with WM6.
Dont have vodafone, but what used to be vodafone in sweden, and it works great . Thanks!

That is very strange - but glad it worked!
I wouldn't recommend that anyone else try these dll's on their phone unless they are using AKU 3.5.2. Otherwise unpredictable things may start happenning...

hi i have tytn and i installed a cab file...but...it worked under GPRS but as soon as i was in 3g zone i couldnt connect to the net, it was saying that my modem has disconested. do u have any idea what i did wrong?

I'm trying to do this exact same patch for the HTC Universal with a WM6 ROM. I succeeded in extracting the browser.dll:
alpinenbfdecode.pl -d nk.nbf nk.nba
mkdir files
rdmsflsh.pl -d files nk.nba
But when I copy the browser.dll (even unpatched) to the device and start Internet Explorer I get the error: iexplore.exe is not a valid application.
I've also noticed that all DLLs I have extracted differ a bit in size compared to the sizes they have on the PocketPC itself. Anyone has tips?

I installed the browser.dll from MUN200SEwm6beta_dlls.zip and it worked on my HTC Universal with WM6. However, I didn't like the feature to enter the useragent in registry, so I changed the DLL and now it contains this useragent string:
Mozilla/4.0 %s (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; Ruw. %d.%d)
The 'Ruw.' was just to fill up the string as I didn't want to change it's length to avoid unspecifed behaviour. Ruw is short for Ruwebit.net (my site).
It works perfectly with all sites. To install: just copy the browser.dll to /Windows. To uninstall: just delete it from /Windows and the original browser.dll from the ROM will re-appear.

how do u copy it? when i try it it says acces denied

anyone tried this with an Ax3l rom?
i'm using AX3L_WM6_WWE_v3.1.2_Lite, should i give your dll a try? or it isnt going to work and i have to manually create the browser.dll for my rom? i'd like to avoid it if i can

whatever you do *dont* try these dlls on the wrong rom. you'll have to make your own for that particular rom i'm afraid - but it isnt hard at all, and you'll learn a lot
By the way, isnt there a new easier way to modify the User Agent string now? I've heard some people mention they used Schaps' Advanced Configuration tool....

Modded Cappackage.pxp Files

So I thought it would be worthwhile to create a thread focusing on modified "cappackage.pxp" files. These are the files which control the default carrier specific configurations. In my case, I am running the Aussie "Three" WM6 OS, however I wanted some, but not all, of the ATT customizations. For example, I wanted the proxy tool, the logos and the certs . . . Attached is a modified version of the ATT cappackage.pxp file. I had difficulty configuring WindowsMobileLive.cab and the HTC task manager to automatically install as part of this new file so I will post those cab files as well for convenience (for those who may want it).
If you have a customized cappackage.pxp, please post it in this thread and describe how it has been modified so everyone can decide which they may want to use.
Here are the changes I made to the cappackage.pxp file. Note, all of these .cab files should be possible to install directly simply by extracting from original ATT WM6 cappackage.pxp in case you happen to need one of them:

abs99, what tool did you use to repackage your PXP file. I've tried several archive tools to .ZIP and rename, but no joy. I've looked, but can't find any info on PXP file creation. Surely, I'm missing something simple here.

I found that "winrar" can handle the files without a problem. I had also noticed that the date stamps were the same for all the files in the original package, so I also use a tool called "stamp it" to set all the dates on all the files in the new package to the same original date.

Now, the next step, I'm trying to mod the capdata.xml file and for whatever reason the device will not recognize it after my mods.

Any thoughts? This is just a basic mod and plan to get more detailed configs in there once I figure out what I'm doing wrong.

The issue with this file may be that editor you are using is adding "white space". I found that some editors caused this to occur. I ended up the file in notepad to avoid the problem as it was a real mess to deal with any other way. You should open the original unedited file and your new edited file in notepad and compare both. For whatever reason, the OS does not like to deal with a properly formatted .xml file!

Thanks mate, the white space and file size were the culprit. Was trying to cheat and use MS xmlnotepad - very easy to use, but it added the whitespace as it made it pretty to look at. I also was trying to cram too much into my archive; the extracted archives need to fit in the 8.4mb along with the archive itself.
Attached is a custom CapPackage.PXP with the following (based from ATT 2.25 ROW, CapPackage.PXP):
ATT Theme
Regional Settings: US, - 5 EST
ExtROM mount and rename
Custom ringtone
Custom Sounds Settings
Delete poutlook.lnk from startup
Set Hello to ATT
Disable CAB security policy
Removed all ATT applications (CV, real, win live, etc)
TODO: Incorporate RegHacks of additional settings customization and tweaks (lots of typing...), right now I install and merge the apps I want after initial setup completes.

HOW TO
***always a good idea to backup existing files before attempting any modification***
1. mount your extended rom (search for the cabs and instructions on this site)
2. copy the CapPackage.PXP from ExtendedROM\Partition to your PC
3. extract the contents to a folder named CapPackage on your PC (any ZIP compliant archive tool will do)
4. remove/add the *signed* cab files your desire (unsigned cab files simply get passed over)
5. open capdata.xml in epcEDIT or notepad.
6. add/remove the configuration information as desired - this is where some trial and error comes in trying to determine what commands control what function.
7. ZIP (no other archive format seems to work) the CapPackage folder to CapPackage.PXP (or rename .zip to .pxp).
8. copy to ExtendedROM and hardreset.
TODO:
-Hope to be able to post a list of commands for the XML to enable configure of most if not all device "settings"
-Hope to figure out a way to get unsigned cabs to install (present workaround is a zip extract and registry commands if the app isn't too complex (e.g. lots and lots of typing required)
--Not sure yet if reg hack setting "HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies' valuename '0000101a' to dword:1" will resolve this during initial setup

Okay, after getting my questions about how this all works and saves the space on the phone, I took the plunge and upgraded from 2.23ROW to 2.25ATT. Went smooth as butter, and I have a "decrapified" phone with the official, supported ATT release (just in case I have any problems and need support).
Of course, being a hacker, now I'm totally intrigued by this cappackage customization, and want to play with it myself. So, Tim et. al., two questions:
Does the capdata.xml file have to match the contents of the archive? Or, if something's missing, it's just ignored? I'd like to be able to delete some more stuff and remake the PXP file without having to hassle with the XML file and run into the problems you have (workable, but I just don't want to waste time on whitespace issues if I don't have to).
Does the carrierDB file need to stay in the extended ROM for any reason after install and setup? I'd like to archive it on my PC, and delete it from the extrom so I can use that space for general storage.

microsoft word has a wonderful xml file editor. rather than try and keep everything straight in that jumbled up mess you get out of notepad or some other editor, word indents all the xml, and makes it look like it should. it was a snap to edit. I used Winrar and opened the PXP file. I never extracted the contents. Just the capdata file. I edited it, and then put the edited version back into winrar. using winrar I deleted the files I didn't want. saved the archive and moved it back to the device.

1. The XML will bypass anything it can't actually do.
2. I have tried it both ways and feel like I've had no issues, but I have seen some reports of strange behavior without it. I currently have it in my ExtROM since I hard reset my device often as I test apps and config settings. If you don't hard reset very often then once the device is hard reset you may delete and gain an additional 1.45mb.
The thing I intend to work on next is creating a provisioning XML to call an external XML (outside of the cappackage). I'm hoping this way I will be able to strip even more out of the cappackage (literally everything but the capdata.xml) and hav an on the fly configuration capability and call installations and configuration from the SD card. Haven't had much time to play with it though.

Can someone help point me in the right direction to get start loading the cappackage. I can't seem to find how to mount the extended ROM. I did a search for it and everything that came up didn't explain it (or at least I didn't understand it if it did).

Hmm, I can't seem to find the original thread either. Really just registry entries, but the cab's make it easier.

Thanks to both of you for the quick response

I don't know whether it is because of this or because of something else. But I started modding this CapPackage file, and all of a sudden my treo just started acting weird. I had to hard reset it several times throughout the day. Then I upgraded to the 2.25 WM6. And that is where **** really hit the fan (I upgraded and put my own CapPackage version in it). And after that I've had nothing but trouble. Soft resets didn't work anymore, it just crashed on the boot screen. Hard resets work, but really slow, takes about 20min. So now I'm re-upgrading to 2.25 and just leaving that CapPackage file alone for now .
The tale away message: Don mess with this unless you know what you're doing, which isn't me
