I'd be interested in one of these too.
The T-Mobile Wing comes with a rubber cover attached to cover the mini usb port. I've always thought it was a pain to use but now I kinna see it does help keep debis out of it.
A friend at work has the Tilt -- he accidently poked his USB port trying to soft reset and it messed up the phone. A cover or plug makes sense. I will keep my eye open for one.

Debris namely your stylus, which can break your USB pins easily.
Hmm...
I'm not entirely sure if this is the right product. Can someone confirm? http://www.l-com.com/item.aspx?id=8134&cmp=ALSOS

Yeah thats the Daddy. Nice find.
Stupid question I know, but since I'll have to import them, thought I'd make sure. Is it USB A, or B on the Kaiser?
Actually, I don't think thats it..

Not the right one? Does that site offer the correct plug somewhere else? Isn't the Kaiser a Mini USB B?
Edit: Aah... that's it, isn't it? What we're looking for is a USB Mini B-type (5 pin) plug.
A positive confirmation is all I'll need ...

Yes, it's a MINI USB.
This is a normal type B, which is the product you found.

Type B means peripheral end, then there is the MINI connector (mini type b?) which cameras, phones, etc use. If you buy the product you found -- it'll work great for your printer as it probably has a normal type-B connector.
They've got to make mini-B type plugs somewhere. Imagine the insurance it will provide against stylus intrusion.
Fact is, mini connectors are more likely to be in the field where dust is present -- vs normal type B, which printers and scanners are. I'm sure they make them somewhere, but not sure where.
Nuts.
I tried looking for something else for a long time, yesterday with no luck. I'll keep looking and post if I find anything.
Well... I can't seem to locate a small port plug so I've resorted to looking for something like this (http://www.superufo.com/product_html/SONY_PSP_PSP_Port_Protector_Cap.html#) that I can possibly cut down to make it as small as possible.
Edit: I don't know why I'm so obsessed with this, but now I'm determined to find SOMETHING
Pictures of the various types towards the bottom.

Not a bad idea to have one actually, considering the reports we see here re: broken usb ports.
I have a number of dead devices here that use the same mini usb port. It would not be too difficult to create a silicone plug using one of their ports as a mold.
Just another thing to try when I'm bored I guess.
If you ever do get around to making a good mold, I'm definitely interested. I bet there are more than a few others who would be, too.
Otherwise ... after days of scouring the net, here's what I found.
I went down to the store to check out the port protectors for the PSP. The most common one I found is not a plug, but rather a cover that needs to other miscellaneous holes to pluginto. NOT suitable.
There's a port protector/silicone skin pack for the Nintendo DS. I haven't yet gotten a chance to take a closer look at it ... but it seems to be a mini usb plug. I think that should work after trimming off the secondary plug (used for a hinged mount). The cost is normally about $7.99 - $9.99 USD.
Seems like a bit of a waste to buy the whole thing for just the little plug, but aside from fabricating something new, this looks like the next best bet.
I would be very interested ion a solution for this too. I found this thread a few days ago and started looking for something. I haven't found anything either.

If the Nintendo DS skin pack you mentioned works out, I would be very interested too, even if what you found had to be modified. IMO even @ $10 it would be worth it.
Careful, nintendo DS does not have your everyday mini usb port. The shape is slightly different. A normal mini usb charger does not fit into the DS. Nintendo did this so they can make more money selling chargers. I hate proprietary shenanigans. Might as well be a Macintosh DS lite.
I have bought a non working display model for the tytn/til/kaiser have access to casting/molding facilities, so unless someone finds a product to meet this need, I intend on having one made fo myself.
This is going to cost me quite a bit, so I was wondering:
If we make plugs for this that work, would you guys be willing to purchase them through Ebay or something?
If so, how much would you be willing to pay?
I just want to offset some of the cost.
Or alternatively, has anyone found a plug yet? I spent a lot of time looking around and haven't found anything yet.

Quality decides the worth of the item you'll be offering. I'd pay no more than $5 for a single plug, which will surely offset any cost for you x20 probably. I can only see cost of materials being a couple cents each. A quality mold, however could be hard to come by.

I've scoured this forum, but can't find a similar problem. Perhaps someone can be of assistance:
My Tilt RLoDed after 3 months. The replacement unit wouldn't place or receive calls. I'm on my third Tilt (second refurb unit), and I figured out why this one was returned too:
The USB port is "loose." I connected to the computer initially and synced, but then I heard the Windows USB disconnect sound... followed quickly by the reconnect sound. I immediately thought, "loose connection!"
Sure enough, the plug wiggles within the port. The port isn't wiggling in the phone, just the plug in the port - as if the port were slightly too big or the plug slightly too small.
Just to add a little info:
My first and second Tilts both fit the plug more snugly. Tighter. Grippier. They wiggled a little, but not nearly like this most recent one does. And of course they never disconnected and reconnected as a result.
But why? Turns out the ports are different! I hadn't sent my second one back yet, so I compared them. In the pic below, the bottom port is like my first and second Tilts (snug fit), and the top port is my third (current) Tilt with the loose connection.
Why the difference? Does anyone else have this problem?
I can't think of anything to do but order my *fourth* Tilt.

yo bro, it's me again.
Well I have to agree with you. It looks like it's due to a change in the port. I have the second one and it's snug.
Honestly ( your gonna hate this ). But if I were you, I'd just exchange the device again. Don't settle for second best or good enough on a device whose retail price is over $550. Remember, for $550 we can buy an inexpensive laptop or a cheapy car.
Yep, I too have the lower picture as my port and it's snug with car charger and usb cable for PC.
Thanks y'all. And thanks for reminding me about the price tag.
Off to spend some QT on the phone with ATT.
Just got my replacement tilt for the "bad usb" port problem. Mine would sync
ok, but, would ONLY charge on the AC charger, not the car charger.
I noticed on your pictures that the bottom of the USB connector did the same
thing as mine did. Where the metal is formed at the bottom, has pulled open
and you can see a noticeable gap. Also on mine, you can see the right side
of the middle section of the connector it pushed down a bit.
Shove some paper is the gap, that'll stop the wiggle.
how do your tilt's port get so messed up? haha, i cant comprehend how it can get to that stage.
JEEZUS man those pictures were NSFW. I had to shield my tilt's virgin screen from those pictures.

Well, I shouldn't feel the need to defend myself, but I do.
My first Tilt I owned for three months without a USB problem - probably looked a lot like the second picture posted by p51d007 - a good port.
The second Tilt I had is the bottom one on my post. It was shipped to me as a refurb and I had it in my possession for a whopping 48 hours. If the metal on the port was slightly separated, it was definitely like that when I got it.
The third Tilt I have is another refurb. I've had it since last Friday, and will be sending it back this Friday when they send me my fourth Tilt. It's USB plug isn't in bad condition per se, it's just a different design and way too loose.
So there it is. I take care of my stuff.

Nice - my dad flew F-111's and 16's in the 80's and 90's. I think he must have been under SAC in the 111 - it was nuke-capable.
My dad was a "boomer". KC-97 refueling operator. He got out of the Air Force when the B-52's were coming online. He did get to refuel B-47's though.
Biggest plane he saw was the B-36 Peacemaker. Said when one took off, landed or flew over, it would make your teeth rattle

Well I prefer the old one then. I guess I should be happy that they sent me a "newer" refurb, but even if it doesn't break as easily as the old one, the USB port is too loose, causing disconnects and reconnects.
Thanks for that info though!!!

Basically its not your USB port thats shaking but the port being too big for the mini USB plug on your charger, what you can do is add a bit of celotape as packing on the top face and bottom face of the charger plug, should sort things out.

Right - that's what I meant to say. But if it's a standardized port... what's going on?
As someone so eloquently put it earlier, don't settle for "good enough" on a $500 piece of equipment. I really wouldn't want to put the tape on multiple chargers anyway, and then run into problems when I have other mini-USB devices that I can't charge with them.

Hah, they dare to call that a cradle . The advantage of a cradle for me is not having to fidle with a cable. I had a cradle (without cable) for my Tytn II from the same brand, poor build quality.
If anybody knows of another Xperia cradle I am interested to hear it too.

We ordered from them but than they told they do NOT ship to the US. There are others who ship to the US the same cradle, just go on EBay. Not real nice but nothing else available yet...
when I had my tytn, I made myself a cradle out of Lego.. moved house since and lost it but it worked really well, I built a USB cable into it and held it in the right place with blu-tak, it looked sweet

we ordered two of them and both do NOT work as they should. It charges but it does not synchronizes, it shows short the connection and does not go to the authentication, makes it useless - hopefully SE brings something nicer and better
Hi,
I got one with the spare battery charger slot.
The spare slot failed to charge a battery without using the SE charger.
That said the MobileFun cheap battery is just that.... Cheap!
Lasted 4 hours and was boiling hot after that time. And that was just sitting on the table for 4 hours!!!
Got the genuine SE battery on the way..

I couldnt find a landscape one ended up making my own. Fill desired base with Playdough, wiggle phone inside, remove phone, fill hole with plaster of paris and let it set.
Remove mould and Playdough, coat the mould in Vasaline or something plaster wont stick to. Refill the container, this time with more plaster, insert the mould and let dry. When you remove the mould this time your left with a perfect dock. Dremmel through the bottom of the container and stick in a usb cable, I had to gluegun the cable in place, but it works better than those portrait docks and feels better built too.

I got tired of samsung taking forever to release a desktop dock, so I went and bought the kidigi and have been using it for a week now. I have to say the dock is amazing . It fits the phone perfectly and holds it in tight . My test for a good dock is if i can place the phone to charge when im drunk, and i have to say its a good dock. . I had a seidio and it was a pain getting the micro usb to line up.

using this as a car mount is actually a good idea, just use some strong velcrow. but the downside is that you wouldnt be able to the 3.5mm headphone jack due to the design. what a pitty for people like me who use aux for audio
Does this dock cause the Nexus S to go into dock mode?
I have dock from Odds and Pods.
It looks exactly the same as one described in this thread but no KiDiGi label on it.
Few things which might be helpful for some.
Mine phone did not went into dock mode until I modified dock:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12160799&postcount=40
Dock working fine with Best Skin Ever attached - so there is some room for protection also.
I would not recommend this dock to use it in the car. Not in the place where I live.
If you have only smooth roads, no bumps at all - then yes - maybe. But your phone is not hold in docking station by anything but small USB plug.
Imagine what will happen with this on some bumps.
Consider buying this one for car instead:

Also I have a question to thread author.
Does your dock working OK in USB transfer mode?
Mine just showed up and I was pleasantly suprised of the build quality. Fits perfect.
I got the one with the spare battery compartment.
Best part about it is that it charges the phone, syncs usb, and charges the spare all at the same time rather than one at a time like some of my older versions i've bought.
If it only had an audio out jack in the back it would be the ultimate.
Ordered it here but can be found cheaper with some research: http://www.4u-mobi.com/onlineshop/online_shop_detail.php?pid=5692 showed up in 10 days

So the usb sync works, transfer files, on the one you got? Just want to make sure since the other person said it only charged his phone (unless I read it wrong).
Works perfectly fine.... They ship it with 2 different cables, 1 is obviously for data transfer and the other is for charging... you can tell because one is thick vs the other very skinny... so I hope whoever said it didn't work didn't get their wires crossed up!

Could you please tell us where you could find it cheaper ? Because, personally, I find that is has a very nice design compared to other alternatives, so I would really like to buy it. Preferably cheaper than 27$. So, again, please tell us where to find it cheaper. Thanks !
Also, on their site, it says that under DC and USB charging, the output is 500mAh. My Nexus S DC charger says 700 mAh. How is that going to affect the charging time ? Almost +1/3 of what it is right now ?
I also understood from other sources, that USB can only give a max output of 500 mAh, is that true ? So the only down-side for this dock is the 500 mAh DC output... it would've been better if it had 1A.

Bump. Does the phone enter dock mode?
Does this fit with the I9023 also?
So, where do you find it cheaper ?
Anyway, I found it on shop.brando.com (I think it's a replica of the KiDiGi model). Unfortunately, I can't post links here, so if you want to find it, do a search for "Google Nexus S USB Cradle" on their site. It's 18$ only for charging the phone and 25$ with a slot for charging the battery. That's compared to 27$ and 31$ respectively for those 2 from KiDiGi.
Also, apart from the KiDiGi models and these replicas, I've also found the chinese ones on eBay. Those are around 10$ each, but I don't quite recommend those. They also come with a 500 mA DC charger each, so there's nothing good here, opposed to the 1A charger that comes with the KiDiGi and those replicas on brando shop.
Hope this helps somebody.

Hi Noc and thanks for the info. Does it require any soldering or is this a fairly simple setup?
If it's the port, you either need just the port itself (which requires soldering) or the entire motherboard (which could be pricy)
once the streak is disassembled its a 5min job to remove the old one and attach then new one (given that you are alright at soldering) the risk with this is that you could short the mobo if you suck at soldering

go to walmart and pick some up for about $15-35
I'll see if mine has some soldering equipment. Sad to lose that Steak just a few weeks after getting it.
My port is broken too, no way i could solder a 30pin connector with my eqiupment. Can anyone post a picture where I can find the two power pins. Are they on the left or on the right side. All I want is to charge it. I see some little circles on the board that could be additional places to solder my two cables, anyone any ideas ? I know it isnt the best solution to have a cable looking out of my streak but i alrdy bought a female mini usb connector. That could be of good use here. If needed i could make a photo of the circle pins on the board so anyone could say me wich one is what.
Heres a picture of my board and the circles that i mentioned above.

Can anyone say me wich pins are for usb 2.0 data ?
broken ports
If I am posting to the wrong place I apologize. The real quesrtion is this is why do the pins keep burning off. The second question is why did dell stop all support for the ds7. The ds7 was and is defective from the start. Dell now refuses any support. I have two ds7s with the same problem. So I ask how many of you agree there should be a class action law suit againt dell? My newest unit is four months old called dell the are refusing to do anything about the situation. I asked if I could send my ds7 in for repair and pay for repair, answer was no, dell is no longer doing repairs, to make things more upsetting dell is selling the ds7 at fry's for $200. Who is interest in a class
action lawsuit with me? I will start a suit with or without support. The whole ds7 problem is just plan wrong. Feel free to email me at [email protected]. btw I am almost sixty years old not a young person with a bad attitude. Wrong is wrong and dell is out of line with the ds7. Thanks. Bart
Dell may in longer be selling it. Fry's could just have a last batch if old stock.

So this power port problem seems to happen rather frequently?

if its not the tablet its the charger or the proprietary cable (f*** you dell) I have had to repair the cable myself due to its abnormally short length and my habits of trying to use it away from the charger while it was on charge (heat shrink electrical plastic + solder fixed the issue though)
I'd say replacing the part yourself would take about 15min once device is disassembled

Sadly the ports on Ebay went back up to around $99. I *thought* I saw one for like 10. All the Dell 5 ports are cheap, the Dell 7 ones are basically almost the price I paid for the thing
Then get a new one, lol. Understand if you can't.
Anybody want to buy a Streak 7 and then repair it? It's rooted already.

..Hi folks. For some reason, a small chunk of the tab inside my DS7 power port has been broken. It looks like somebody got hungry and chewed a tiny piece of it off. So as of right now, the power cable will not charge the DS7...

I have had two D7's with the issue. The first was due to a bent pin, took some tweezers and flattened the pin, then slightly bent the the metal casing of the charging cable outward- but bend it more toward the ends of each side, as a result the middle slightly bowed outward but it worked.
...and have to put the plug into the port at an extremely slight angle to go in smooth, once in, it charges fine. been using it that way for about 8months, no sweat.
The reason for slightly "opening" the ends of the the charging cable is so that it fits better over the end pins on the charging port tabs.
It is likely that some of those that have broken/cracked ports and/or bent pins wind up not working still because the edge of the charging cable catches on a pin, so by bending the cable housing just a little, it helps give it the lift to get over any pins that would normally catch and they'll make enough contact to charge and also connect via USB. That's also why plugging in at a slight angle helps the pin get "under" the outer housing of the charging cable.
However, the second one DS7 that had the issue more like what is in the initial post regarding an actual cracked charging port tab.
In mine, there's two small chunks of the top tab and one small chunk off the bottom tab in the power port. Yes, BOTH the bottom and top charging port tabs were damaged!
Mine was due to my little one horsing and tripping over the cord, when it yanked out at an angle...well...it got screwed up. At first it didn't seem like it was going to work, but after a little bit of careful fiddling...
Anyhow, I did have to use the tweezers again AND had to slightly bend the plug as described earlier. That said, I charge this thing daily and no issues, nor have to replace the port. If you fiddle around a little with the plug itself (ie. try bending it open just a little on the ends that match where the charging port tab pins were bent) and plugging in at a slight angle, it may very well help some of the others with this issue.
It's worked for me now on two different devices with very similar isues... so all I can say is these small tweaks worked for me...this DS7 has been charging/USB plugging fine for about 6 months of daily use... hope someone else can benefit.

yes. sent you something back.
I'm necroing this old thread because-IT WORKS! All i needed to do was replace the power cable. Despite the HORRIBLE condition the tab in the power port looks, the Streak 7 still gets charge and works now. Amazing. Onward ho to JB 4.2 from Honeycomb!
Hey guys, some of you might remember my post about adding expandable storage to the LG G2 (Link to old post: https://plus.google.com/112350291283202736057/posts/2z1wLqRc8Fg )
Well i'm back and I have done some improvements to make it a lot smaller
With this you will be able to put any micro SD card up to 64gb into this device as well as you will be able to plug it right into your computer with the USB side
Link to all picturesI'm also thinking I might make a version where it is built into a case, because my aim is to get it as small and unnoticeable as possible without losing any comfit, and feeling like you have something attached to your device
What are your thoughts about my idea?

Uhh, I don't like naked wires, but that's probably just me. Have you considered something like the Dash Micro from meenova.com?
Check it out here.
http://meenova.com/
It's pretty cool you did it either way!
I love your ideas and concept. I recommend getting the otterbox case for this phone and mod the case to let the otg stay in and protected.
I'm actually interested in taking the back cover off and using an extended battery back and holding the otg that way.

Yea like I said this is still in development and once it's done it won't have any exposed components. They reason why I made this I because this is supose to be a semi permanent solution so you can always have it plugged into your you phone (except when charging) that way you can have mass storage, where with the meenova it's way to big to have it keeped attached to your phone with out it breaking off

That's a good idea for incorporating it into a case, the picture that I have with it inside a case, is just a generic case I have and it just happened to fit under it

Yeah. However it will be a bit of a task to charge the device. I'm going to research on how to possibly get wireless charging on it. Maybe even incorporating a solar charger.

Funny you should say that, I actually have a micro usb wireless charging pad, I could try put the two together, because they should work
Awesome!!! Search on eBay and there should be micro usb to female usb and male micro usb.

Ahh I see. Good idea. My only concern is the power and possibility of shorting maybe? I'm very curious to see Edgar you come up with. That will be awesome.

Na should be fine Although I somehow screwed my board about 3 hours ago messing around with it (Not related to this project) haha, so i need to make another one, should get the components withing the week
I've also put some thought into adding an SD card into my case (case mate tough case).
The meenova is the smallest micro sd card read i have found thus far... without its case it could fit inside my case pretty well, even better probably if i cut a piece out of the phones backplate. Together with some flatflex cable and a pcb mountable micro sd plug it should work fine.
The Problem is power. How do we charge it? Plugging in and out the sdcard cable would make less nice and an additional charging coil (which should fit too) would cap the charging rate 500mA.
After all that thinking i just stuck the meenova to my keychain ;P
Fantastic solution, please continue the develop. Possibe to merge micro-sd slot (reader) and wireless reciever? (on G2 there is only one usb slot)
Ow nice idea
Nice idea, I found this, if you be able to strip the plastic you can get a slimmer project. I'll do it to mine and incorporate with my armor case. When it arrives... about two mounths (Brazil sux in shipping times). I'll post some images here.

Thx to share your ideas!
Some time ago I bought:
http://m.aliexpress.com/item/1673689666.html
It doesn't look compact and impressive, but after removing case... we get really slim card reader, easier to pack into case or smth
DarkN3ss61,
any news? Wireless reciever and micro sd reader combo?
What about this?
Hey guys, sorry I haven't been very active here lately and posting updates. Well so far I have my replacement parts and I have rebuilt it because I fried my last board. I havent had much time to try get the wireless charging working with it, but i'm eager to start on that now. Although i did get a micro USB splitter and had both plugged in and they where working, so I should be able to make them as one
Its a good idea but I think this project wont be battery-friendly
i recommend using an additional battery instead of wireless charging. Additional battery+micro sd in a case will be awsome.
Ha I has the same crazy ideas, glad I'm not the only one...
I think it's easier just using a usb otg converter and a tiny usb stick, for example this one which has micro usb pass through so you can charge your phone through it http://m.ebay.com/itm/321608143459?_mwBanner=1
