I was hoping someone could write up (in layman's terms) the exact steps needed to save a copy of the current rom a person has so if something bad happens you can restore everything back to the way it was.
Hopefully HTC will be sending out an update soon and many of us would be wise to protect what we currently have before installing or updating anything HTC gives us.
So how about it? A nice check list and links to any software that is needed and all presented in a way a novice can handle.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're just looking for a good backup utility. Do a search for either SPB Backup or Sprite Backup. Either way, you won't be able to restore the backup onto the new rom, but if you have issues with the new rom, you could always reflash the rom that you are currently using and then apply the backup.

Sorry I was not clear. I'm not talking about backing up the usual area's in the TyTn II. I'm talking about backup up the ROM itself.
If HTC offer's us a ROM update and for some reason it messes things up worse then how things are now it would be a handy thing to have backed up the ROM we have at the moment and be able to roll ourselves back to that previous version.
"Backing up" your current rom in a way that it can be reinstalled to protect us from anything HTC might give us is what I'm asking for here. A nice user friendly easy to understand set of steps that we can all use to protect what we have before we try whatever HTC might be offering us to correct our driver problems and god knows what else.

Hi, I was reading the forums, and read that even if I change my rom with a new OS version, Spirt backup will still restore my setting and program, with the new OS with the upgrade function? .....I'm wondering if that is true, and can spb backup do the same?
I heard spirit backup is better but somehow I run into lots of problems when I try to backup with spirit, but I found spb run much more user friendly and less problems except with the scheduled backup.

In general (theoretically), yes. I, however, had probs with the Device Upgrade mode in the 2.3 -> 3.2 transfer. Could easily fix by NOT letting Sprite restore PIM stuff. (Read the Backup Bible ( http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1270&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 ) for more info.)

Nope. See the direct comparison in the Backup Bible.

What problems? Could you elaborate a bit so that I can check them too?
First time experience with spirit backup
After installing spirit without any error I try the backup function, somehow it kepts giving this error unable to backup. Also I found it very slow in refresh or moving about in the problem compare to spb backup. Everything is fine with spb backup except the scheduled backup, never work for me when I set the day and time. Always get a error log, unable to do backup at that time, but when I just do manual backup everything works fine and restoring too. So I'll stick with spb backup, for now.
Hi all,
Ok, ive looked around and have found not much on this to help me, so if this is a repeat problem in anyway please let me know, I will happily read something to work it out myself.
But, essentially I have two backup questions. I need/want to re-flash my Wizard (o2 XDA MiniS) which is currently on the RUU_Prodigy_2170702_21707102_20710_QTEK_WWE_Ship.exe rom. Since going to this ROM I am unable to send/receive MMS messages of any kind. I am informed there is one for me to download, but when I try it fails. o2 have given me the instructions to add their server into my MMS configuration but it doesnt work. So as im not sure what the problem is, I thought id re-flash the rom with a newer one and worry about it after then. (If anyone knows a fix for this, let me know pls!!!) Anway I still would like to know how...
1) I have lots of text messages I do not want to lose. Is there a way I can back them up so when I flash with another rom, I can put them back on my device? I do have a storage card if that helps.
2) Can I use a backup program such as...
- Pocket Backup Plus 2.1.2
- Sprite Backup Premium v3.1.4.2419
- Sunnysoft.Backup.Manager.v3.3.Build.03141
That I could use to take a snapshot image of my phone, so I can restore the "image" if using a new rom messes things up?
Thanks for any replies!!!

Sprite Backup 3.1.4 is NOT WM5-compilant. Don't have the time to check the exact build number of the other two. Read my Backup Bible here at XDA-Dev, it'll answer your q's (and I, again, recommend that you follow my articles as this article can also be found in the local forum): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=278037
Cheers dude thats awesome. Nice one!
You need Sprite Backup 5.1 for PPC, before you upgrade your ROM read the FAQ first,
https://spritesoftware.crmdesk.com/...earch=Search&area=0&criteria=0&sort=0&start=0
then follow it step by step to restore to your new ROM
I will admit although I am a seasoned mac user and program specialist im totally lost with my fairly new Touch Diamond,Sprint, I have don many hacks and mods and i really like the phone. I would like to try different roms but i will only do so if i can totally back up the phone, I mean so i can just restore to the exact same way it is now Is this possible? Sorry for the possibly lame question. Thanks,
Mike
NOw that almost 40 of you have viewed this can i get some kind of answer

U DONT need computer to do a back up or restore, unless you format internal storage on device.
Install the program and do the backup.
The back up is stored on internal storage, you can keep the .cab file of the backup program there to.
So when somthing wrong-(wipe device) and after fresh install of windows install spbbackup .cab and then restore what ever you backed up.
Somthing like this
and forgive my english
ah very nice. thank u muchh
Is there a way to "image" the phone, so EVERY thing is backed up? Like installed programs, settings, contacts, colours... everything?

There are many backup options available. You can use an app like Sprite Backup or Sashimi to backup anything you want to keep including the registry. Microsoft has the MyPhone service as an option.
You can always flash back to the shipped rom to get your device back to factory state. If you don't flash your device and you do some tweaks/hacks that screw it up you can always hard reset and start fresh. Good Luck!

Most backup options won't do a "complete" backup - like an "image" of the phone that can be put back on so that there is absolutely EVERYTHING on the phone back on it.
I'm talking like putting a ROM on, but it being my entire phone - settings, documents, call log, pictures, installed programs, etc.
The reason being is that I already had to hard reset earlier this week, and it's a pain to have to do EVERYTHING over again.

I don't know if there is anything like what you want yet. I was trying to help the OP.
I think the closest thing you can get right now is Sashimi but I seem to remember that someone was working on something similar for frequent rom flashers.

I'm going to try Sprite Backup. Sounds like it might work.
I used some metamorph themes and now I just want to go back to the default one that came with the phone. can some one PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make me a metamorph file that will do this? I'm getting really desperate and even did a factory reset, which did nothing except delete everything off my phone (i got it all back with my nandroid back up)... I really appreciate any help at all.
P.S. I'm VERY new so if you're going to give me advanced instructions please dumb em down a little bit thanks!

Basically, you should have nandroid(ed) before you metamorphed. Reversing would be doable by restoring that backup.
If you didn't, you could analyse what the metamorph packages you applied change and pinpoint them on your nandroid backup or original rom .zip, extract and make some reverse morphs...but I guess you don't know how to that judging by the thread.

What i've done in the past is just re-apply what ever rom ur using ex:cyanogen 4.2.14.1 over 4.2.14.1. That would revert everything without deleting your apps and settings.

I did the nandroid backup bt replaced it with a newer one so I wouldn't lose data which incidentally had a metamorph applied. And why would you suggest something and then just say oh i see you dont know how...
Sorry to sound snippy but people keep running me into dead ends. Thanks for the limited information you provided.

thanks I'll give that a try
shanicenicolle when you apply a new them rename your old nandroid before making a new one. Then when you want to go back just rename it to the right name and use it.
It's just easier than that:
Install the ROM again, thats it.
No wipe, no installing from some stuff.
Just install your romfile again and then you've stock rom. Takes only 5 Minutes...
I agree with Formel-LMS. That is the easiest way, it worked for me, but I nandroid everytime time that I settle with my rom with theme. Nandroid will set u back with every last pixel u had previously.
Good luck
First post from an Android Noob. I just want to get a few things straight before I do anything to my new Droid 4.
Basically, the only reasons I want to root my phone (for now) are (1) to use Titanium Backup for backup purposes, and (2) to use wireless tethering
First, I want to make sure that rooting the D4 this early in the game is stable enough and reversible if needed. From what I'm reading here, I gather that the risks are acceptable.
I'm running Linux (openSUSE), so I plan on using skylarmb's Linux/Mac utility from the Dev section. I gather that there have been no problems running that script? Anything I should be looking out for?
Regarding OTA updates, my understanding is that if I accept one, it would most likely break root until the devs find a way around it, and that I would still be able to use my phone for all non-rooted stuff. Is that right?
Now, a 'nandroid' backup. From what I understand, that is a backup of the current ROM on the phone. Is that something I need to do if I'm not currently planning on flashing other ROMs? Is it enough to just run backups of apps & data through TB?
That's all for now, I think. Thanks!

In case anyone is interested, I went ahead and rooted my D4 using skylarm's Linux utility. Worked like a charm and haven't had any troubles since then.

Would still like a comment or two on this. Is a nandroid something I have to consider if I'm not going to be flashing ROMs (at least not yet)?

A nandroid backup is a good idea before you start making changes. It gives you a fall back to restore if something goes wrong while making changes.

I just did a full backup using Safestrap Recovery. It's definitely a must do if you are going to do ANY modifications to a rooted phone. The Nanadroid backup is essentially a copy of your phone's current state and comes in handy when testing out new roms. You can easily restore a backup and you're right where you were before you flashed it.
Thanks for the recommendations. I'll keep them in mind, especially before I try anything risky...
