Hey there,
Whats a good application that utilizes the GPS when my ATT Tilt is missing or stolen?
For ex, if someone steals my phone, I want to be able to find out where it is via GPS (through SMS)?
Anyone have any recommendations based on what they have used (or use now)?
It would be nice if this software had an option to manually send GPS coordinates via SMS.
Thanks!
Hi:
I use WIMP (Where Is My Phone).
I have found it to be the best. There is another option from Carty, but they charge extra for the GPS feature and other features cost extra too.
With WIMP, it will send you the person's new phone number if the SIM is changed, you can also send a secret text message to your phone, which will then text you back the phone's GPS coordinates. WIMP does include the GPS option in the purchase price etc...

Anyway, hope this helps
i'm using mobile justice, it's opensource

There are two apps that I have used that I must say make the GPS built into the Kaiser along with its data connectivity pretty cool. Of course, the GPS is a great tool for mapping software such as TomTom, iGuidance, Google Maps, MS Live Search, and others... but the possibilities of GPS in a connected device like the Kaiser can lead to many other great things. Two that I have found useful are Mobile Justice and 3d Tracking. Here is a quick description of what they are.
First, I have installed Mobile Justice which alerts you when a SIM card is changed and will send a text message to a number of your choosing when it is changed... for example it was stolen and a card was sent in. It can also send the current GPS location. In addition, you can send the device a text message with a keyword and request at any time, the current GPS location. You can also put a message on the device screen. I know people often cook this application into ROMs. I hope that someone does this for a future Kaiser kitchen. I learned about the new GPS features here: http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/mobile_justice_sms_your_phone.html
The other app that I have used that is kind of nifty is 3d tracking. It updates your GPS location in near real time to a website that you can use a PC to monitor. The mapping is done using Google maps. Very cool way to keep track of valuables such as your teenagers. ;-)

What other cool uses for the GPS have you found to use with your Kaiser?
I think the latest is the GPS photo functionality that was discovered to be built in. We were talking about this functionality at work but in an actual camera. Little did I know that i would discover this same function active in my TyTn II

I did see that in the forums which just made the camera in the phone that much more useful. Very useful when on hikes or vacationing to take a quick snapshot. Sure, the camera on the phone is not a replacement for a high quality digital camera, but it is convenient and in outdoor light, does a pretty good job. Combined with the GPS tagging, it is fun too. I hope we get to see even more uses for the integrated GPS.
Please explain

Can you please explain this function and how it can be used.
I am using Nokia's smart2go gps software in my Tytn-II and its working gr8, with Nokia's maploader u can download very detailed maps with very good databases particularly for middle-east.
Similar to your Mobile Justice product, here's one I saw the other day. Its kind of like LoJack for your phone:
http://www.pocketpc-live.com/pocketpc-softwares/ultimate-theft-alert-v3-for-pocket-pcs-2.html
It You can have your phone let you know where it is if its ever lost.
The company I work for does gps tracking for sports (running, skiing etc). I won't post the link, as i dont want to be seen as advertising.
But its pretty cool to be able to see how fast you ski (57.2mph is my fastest so far).
Someone sent me a note on this site that does something similar to 3d tracking. I will try it out now to see how it works.

Here is another tool that has a description with features similar to WIMP (Where Is My Phone) and Mobile Justice. Has anyone heard of it or tested it before? It is called Ultimate Theft Alert and has GPS as an add-on option.

I had no idea there were so many tools for GPS integrated mobile phones. Here is another freebie, this time from a well known PPC developer, VITO Technology. It is called FindMe

And for those with coding experience... here is an example with source code.

Basic use would be if you wanted to add pictures to a map (google earth i believe supports this) you take a picture and in geomarks your pic.
It is basically done by regedit - you can read more on this in this exact forum (should be on page one or two -- easy for us to say this while the kaiser forum is still fresh)
Have a look at this..... http://www.reperion.com/
Downloaded the software, registered an account and now my handset can be tracked by anyone with a pc.
yeah the file download was down before, working now, will try this one out

This is free for now it seems. I will try it out. Do you know if it is any different than 3d tracking? That one is free too.
Had a quick look t 3d tracking, reprion looks to do asimilar thing.
Both seem pretty cool anyway
Some more interesting GPS software: http://www.jgui.net/gps/index.html
Personal observation: There should be a standard for SMS messages whereby the GPS coordinates of the sender can be sent along with text or mms messages. This would be handy for location based services and when chatting with friends.
AND wth pda's

Somthing wrong with the GPS
Hi
There's something definitely wrong with the GPS happening from time to time.
Today, TomTom was off by nearly 1 kilometre using the internal GPS. Using BT GPS everything was fine.
After a restart: the location was spot on again.
It has happened to me 3-4 times now that the GPS is completely off the charts.
Wonder if this could be fixed with a Radio ROM update ..

Sorry to maybe possible hijack this threat a little. I am also using smart2go. But I can't download any maps to my MicroSD with the Maploader. It always complaint that there is no space in my card (which has 3.7GB free). How were you able to download the maps to your card?
Many thanks in advance!
PS. Never mind. I found out that Smart2Go probably has a problem with storage cards larger than 2GB as if I use smaller MicroSD cards, the Map Loader works fine. So the solution is to run Smart2Go with a blank 2G or smaller card, then copy the files to the 4G MicroSDHC. Then Map Loader works (with a size limit of 1.8G for map data).....
Ok so still having some problems.
As noted here

Some programs don't instal for me, WIMP did install however (haven't tested it yet) so my assumption would be some kind of security setting that is on when installing cabs, do you guys turn it off? (i remember there was a way to do this with the Hermes) or do these apps just install out of the box (per se)?
EDIT:
Looks like its some kind of problem when i transfer the file over via activesync to the card. I put it on via straight pc to another card and it installs fine.
Hi guys, I just took the plunge and put in an order for a Tilt today; unfortunately the shipping address got botched up so it didn't get shipped out yet. I'm coming from a PalmOS background (Treo 650, Kyocera 7135, several non-phones before...).
Does anybody have a suggestion for an app for tracking a couple users and sharing their location with each other?
I see gpsgate has this functionality, but it doesn't appear to have any mechanism for displaying other users. I'd like to pull up a map and see where another user is, and vice versa. I've compiled a list of what I've found and my thoughts (keeping in mind I haven't used them yet), but wanted to get some real user opinions.
GpsGate - Upload only, no way to see other users from the app?
Reperion - Website seems a little sketchy, but the functionality sounds about right. Not real time?
NavXS - Another sketchy website, but the software looks okay.
Mologogo - Java app only, might work though.
GPS Tuner - Nice looking software, but it doesn't have the functionality I'm looking for. It has a buddy function, but there is no "Google Maps" sort of mode. This looks great for outdoor navigation, though.
chtiGPS This looks to be a bit like GPS Tuner, and again doesn't really meet the requirements.
there is a prog called "WIMP" WhereIsMyPhone. You send a text message code to a tilt or Kaiser and it will quietly return a google link with their exact location. Mainly used to silently ping your lost phone and get it's location, but the buddy angle could be handled with it. http://www.wimp-software.co.uk
Mologogo seems to be your best bet, but I tried the WM version on the Kaiser and I got a nasty message error upon launch. (UPDATE - only the first time). Still it proceeded and find the GPS module OK. Problem is that it's not reading the first digits properly 48,8141 becomes ,08141 - probably a regional setting, I'll
Hello, since most of us have a new found GPS, I would like to use those programs that allows you people to go to a certain website to see where you are, and find friends that are close by, etc. This is specially useful to use it with family and friends or kids, when we want to know where are they located.
so far I have found out 2 programs, (FREE)
-Mologogo. http://www.mologogo.com/
-Livecontacts. http://www.livecontacts.com/
I was wondering if anybody found any others besides of these programs, because both seems to be very buggy and/or not so accurate. (mologogo showed like I was somewhere in the Atlantic ocean close to Nigeria!!!!)
Anybody had successful results with these?. Are there any other programs that anybody uses, free or paid?
Hi.
Next version of commmgrpro will include the posibility to send to CMP server Cell ID, operator and GPS coordenates (if available). In this way, with some weeks/months, the server will host a map of Cells (and operator) and GPS position in the world. So when the map is big then It wont be necessary to connect the gps. It will be enought to turn on the device. Then It will send the current Cell/Lac to the server and the server will convert it to geographical position. Then I will add buddy support, etc, etc and of course, posibility to see it using a web browser and google maps.

Try this, its works well...http://geocool.reperion.com/Web/Msgs/default.aspx?MessageID=24
Ok , i dont know if there is such application that i need but here is my idea to create it.
So we all have GPS on our Kaisers ,and i think that everybody would like to know in 1-2meters precision location of their Kaiser if he is stolen.
So there are two options for thief:
1.He will use our SIM card without touching anyhting (i doubt)
2.He will use his own SIM card
1 option
If thief is not too smart, he will use our SIM card.
So we send some special SMS to our stolen telephone number(Kaiser) and application intercepts that SMS , reads current GPS location , and sends SMS with coordinates of our Kaiser to number which is predefined in options of application(which are of course protected with password so nobody can change them)
Then we receive SMS to number which was entered on stolen Kaiser with coordinates ,and simply type them to some map application of our area or GoogleEarth and we can knock on thiefs doors
2 option
If thief input his own SIM card in Kaiser ,application needs recognize that that is not default SIM card and simply do the same as on "1 option".
It needs to read curently GPS coordinates and send them to predefenied number in options of application.
Application needs to do also these things:
1.Application must be protected with password
2.When another SIM card is inserted or "special SMS" received it needs to lock complete Kaiser with password or delete microSD (optional)
3.If application sends SMS with stolen Kaiser coordinates once , and thief goes somewhere else in meantime(lets say minimum 50meters away from last coordinates) , application needs to send again SMS with new coordinates
4.If SMS cant be sent for some reasons(no network service, etc.) application needs to try resend SMS with coordinates (lets say every 5minutes).
And i think thats it...
If thief is smart he will probably do the hard reset before using device.
But there is also oslution for that.
Every ROM cooker ,of course if he wants, can add that application to his ROM so if thief hard resets Kaiser , application is still there and ready to send coordinates.
As i said, i dont know if there is such application out there but i think taht every owner of Kaiser would have that piece of applicaiton on his device.
I only know that there is "TrackMe" application out there and probably with some small modifications it will do the thing.
Regards,
PS. sorry for bad english but i think i get my point

tried WIMP so far and it seems to be good piece of software..
Colleagues,
I am getting a Fuze for XMas and would like to know what GPS software are you all using?
Regards.
I use a free over-the-air package, amazegps.com. It does turn-by-turn voice prompting, moving 3D maps, etc. I've been very pleased with it so far.
WMM,
I take it you live in the US; do you know how it compares to others, whether paid or free?
I haven't done extensive comparisons; my use of GPS navigation is pretty limited, and the amazegps.com package meets my needs very well, so I haven't had much motivation to look further. I did sign up for the free trial of the TeleNav (AT&T Navigator) package and tried it a few times. As you would expect for $10/month, TeleNav is definitely flashier -- you can give the destination address using voice recognition, and it has text-to-speech to read you the names of the roads onto which you will be turning. It also has traffic advisories. If I used it a lot and were in a city with traffic jams to worry about, I'd definitely think the TeleNav features were worth it.
I've also seen rave reviews for OnCourse Navigator 8 (OCN8). Although I haven't used it myself, the screen shots and descriptions were really impressive.
Those are the only other two products I know anything about. For myself, amazegps.com gets me reliably from point A to point B without getting lost, and without my paying a cent for it, so that's more than good enough for me.
I've used Telenav and like the features. Text to speech (tells you the name of the street or exit to turn on) is great, the ability to send your phone a destination via the PC is nice as well. I've used the voice recognition feature but it's cumbersome and doesn't work well while driving (where this is needed).
I have use Copilot on the PC and love it. I would have purchased it for the ppc but it's expensive.
I am now using Garmin XT and have been for over a year. They have recently improved the OSD while navigating and knowing where to turn is a lot easier. Garmin XT does not have text to speech but does have almost every other feature of the top Garmin stand alone navigation devices. The program even has some features that are better than the Garmin PND. The app comes installed on a 2 gig micro sd card but there are ways of moving it to bigger cards. I have used this app on my ATT Tilt, HTC Advantage and now the ATT Fuze. Like the advantage I can start a music playlist then open the Garmin app and begin to navigate.
There are others I would like to try (TomTom, Navigon, IGo and Copilot) but my $$ is the bottleneck to new gadgets and toys.
how does that AmazeGPS compare to GoogleMaps?
I went on the website and it says their both free. So im guessing its the same quality as googlemaps.
Thanks for your replies.
Anyone else know of any other freeware?

can google maps be used like a gps device?
I have been using OCN6 for Street Navigation. I have ordered OCN8 which looks amazing. I use Memory-Map Navigator for topographic Navigation.

They are for different purposes. Google maps can use the GPS to show you where you are on a map; it can give you a route from one place to another; and it can follow you as you drive along. It is not a turn-by-turn navigator program; i.e., it doesn't give you spoken prompts like "In 500 feet, turn right" and such, and it doesn't given you a "3D" map were you appear to be flying over a map with perspective, both of which AmazeGPS does. I have and use both; Google maps is better for "where am I," and AmazeGPS is better for "take me to XYZ."
Thanks for all the great suggestions! Does GPS require/use a data package?
Telmap. Not sure if it's free still... it was earlier this week in beta, and so far... it's pretty damn good. Voice navigation, built in POIs, traffic reports, fast to get GPS signals, and more. It also showed me a better route to take which was faster than what I would have usually done.
Nav4all
Check out nav4all its pretty good its nav4all.com

It depends. Programs like amazeGPS and TeleNav get all their data, except for your current coordinates, over the air and thus require a data package. Programs that you buy or install on an SD card have the maps on your phone but will still use data for things like traffic and weather information (but I believe you can configure them not to use data if you want).
AmazeGPS has an interesting mode where you need data only when you're doing the routing. That way you can construct the route using an ActiveSync or wifi (i.e., possibly free) connection, and then while you're driving, it will still give you vocal prompts but only show you arrows for your turns instead of moving maps, so it doesn't use any over-the-air data while navigating.
After vmm mentioned amAzeGPS I have done more research and I have read amAzing things about it so I will give it a try when I get my Fuze.
Thank you all.
