Just upgraded my phone from Treo 750 to the New AT&T Tilt. It is a new company phone fresh out of the box with a 4gb memory card.
I turn to you for guidance on how to get the most out of this phone.
What are the must haves?
What Rom and Radio?
etc
Thanks in advance.
you need to hardspl your phone first, and then you can start flashing. there's a few different rom available, and everyone has their own preferences. my advise, read read read, and then read some more.
Well, i must say you came to the right place. But you're asking the wrong question my friend. All i can say to you is READ. You will learn there is soo much info on this site that it will take you at least a month to narrow down your own decisions on what you want/need. Everyone on here has a different preferance for what they want/need. I'm not going to flame you, because you don't deserve it . . . . YET Just do what we all do and have been doing ever since we came in contact with our 8125/8525/8925 . . . . READ. Start with the Wiki, and then start reading up around the forums as for what is avalible for you to @#$% around with. Have fun, and trust me , YOU WILL!!!
Welcome!
Read... and read some more. It's really a matter of taste. I'd start simple with things that won't break your phone, but once you find out how to flash that won't last long. If you don't want to flash I recommend pulling your battery before the device customization on first boot. If you've already passed the point you can hard-reset by pushing both soft keys and resetting with the stylus. Pull your battery when your device says "Device will customize in 3 seconds..." and all of the ATT bloatware will be gone!
Just a few things to remember.

I honestly considered that because I miss not being able to use the 8925 with one hand like the treo. I got spoiled being able to text with one hand.
Oh well I still have a few more weeks to decided.

Phone is awesome. Yeah it does have a big drawback in the 3D rendering department, but, hopefully, we will solve this in future somehow. Besides, there's no perfect phone.
I just wanted to recommend u to try out iGo MyWay Plus 2006 for GPS software. I think it's the best, and I've tried many.
Definitely install KaiserTweak.. and if you're into games, I'd recommend games by company called MoreGames, they have some awesome stuff.
Oh and get a CorePlayer QTV for video.

What about iGO 2007?
Must have freeware and apps (for me anyway) with no flashing
Google maps
Windows live
PCM keyboard
HTC Enlarge Start Menu
IE Slow scroll fix
Mini opera and Opera mobile
TCPMP (with plugins such as Flv and WMV plugin)
HTC Dialer
Duttythroy 1 calc
I personally prefer to keep the natural look of my MDA Vario III but do like some of the apps originally found on the cooked ROM's

Sorry to thread jack, but I thought it's supposed to be COM4 Baud 9600.
What is the "Kaiser Tweak"?
I'll be in your position soon. Getting Tilt within next two weeks. I've already been reading trying to catch up and focus on wants/needs. I love the I phone look alikes, but so many to choose from...need the best close to Iphone theme. lol!
I use TouchPal for my one handed keyboard. Love it, but it took some getting used to.
I still often pop out the keyboard since I moved my instant messaging entirely to my phone and sometimes will have long conversations. I also flip open the keyboard when taking notes and whatnot.

Welcome aboard!
Are you using this X-Button? Checking it out it seems that it's got a OK/X Bug? Can you verify?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330046&highlight=HTC+X-Button
For black keyboard, I was turned on the Resco Keyboard Pro, very nice on-screen keyboard!, very flexible/skinnable, with calculator
I've applied JJ's Black theme, Black Dialer, Schaps Com Manager and am loving my Kaiser, a nice evolution from Hermes.
The only function I really miss is Vjay Lumos, we really need a mappable display bright toggle key. The Kaiser's screen is not transreflective and a brightness "bump" would be very helpful while out and about outdoors.

Welcome Duttythroy! I hope you are planning to do some cooking on the Kaiser...your help in tweaking the ROMs would be greatly appreciated. I haven't made any customizations on mine yet (other than changing the WM skin and installing a crapload of software).
The CommMgr one is the one I want the most. I want one that just essentially adds the 3G button to the existing one in the open space on the window. Other than that, I'm quite happy with it stock at this point. But I'm sure new cooked ROMs will add lots of tweaks that will make it even better...

Agree about the PIE bug.
GPS - I wonder whether it's worth a hard reset and a re-run of the quick GPS for you. I only say this cos mine, even indoors is very good at holding a signal using tomtom at least.

Its 18 months or so since I joined this forum, and it was because of my new MDA Vario II.
I'm now due for an upgrade, and there is only one phone I want - the III.
So, tell me - what should I do? I'm so confused and disapointed. I use my Vario II to stream YouTube video and surf the web, and from what I've seen, the III isn't up to it.
Please tell me I'm wrong and I should call for my upgrade tomorrow !!!!

Get the kaiser
Seriously, do you want to buy mine off me / swap? T-mobile branded, but you can flash / do what you like with it.
I really can't use it as an everyday phone. On another forum (hexus.net) the guy said simply - it's not a phone as such. It's a tool for techs / devs or whatever who need the extra functions. But for a phone it lacks in many usability ways that your average nokia / SE / samsung does not. It's a shame really, the device has so much potential to be awesome, it's completely the software side of things that lets it down.
It has dropped a fair few useful features from WM5 / earlier versions too - like having a t9 text input rather than a touchscreen keyboard. Now you *have* to get the stylus out if you want to send a quick message without altering from portrait to landscape to use the hard keyboard, which takes around 2 - 3 seconds anyway for the hardware to redraw it.
Looks like HTC are working on the vids driver issue. Someone has suggested a patch in feb/march. Have a read of some of the posts on it.

Yea I read that. But also read a post saying that there is no driver due for release since there is no ATI Imageon hardware built in to have drivers for. Who knows? There comes a point where you need to say you've had a product that hasn't delivered what you expected for long enough. However, it is full of features so maybe a good choice. But if I was buying right now with the knowledge I have now I'd probably not get a smart phone but something nice and simple that could perfectly perform the duties I wanted it to
So short answer: it's up to you
Thanks for that feedback guys. I'm pretty use to my MDA and its functionality, even though making a call can be sometimes difficult.
So, is video playback as bad as is mentioned?
Also, I use voice dialing and the hands-free speaker. Are these functions on the III?
cheers guys,
Ratzz
I watch youtube on mine all the time. I think it is just fine. I have been using the Kaiser now for 5 months and I love it and would not make another choice.

Yes those feature are in it out of the box. U should get one. All in all, it is the best pda out yet. I personally love mine, and with the right rom u can make it fly. It doesnt have problems with any 320X240 video, and with the new coreplayer 1.1.3 not even with bigger ones so get it. It's a great pda phone!

i love it, works like a charm for me, but you need to take others opinions like a grain of salt until you actually try the device yourself..
I think the Diamond will have some issues as lots of other devices, but they'll be worked out with later ROMs.
Are you in the USA? If so how can it work like a charm with NO 3G or 850Mhz support? So if you are an AT&T NO EDGE?????? I have the unit and use both SIMS and no better one or the other..

nah i bought a prepaid optus sim and testing it with that at the moment, $70 bucks gets you 300MB and some decent call time so thats cool with me, and whey optus roll out their 900Mhz 3G network it will work a treat...
this phone doesnt operate on NextG(850Mhz) it's 3G bands are 900/2100
telstra are a rip off. im on optus on a $70 prepaid turbocharge. gives u $650 worth of calls/txts/video calls and 300mb of data.
telstra soon enough will drop their prices when optus roll out their 900MHz HSPA network.
my advice: go for touch pro if kb and memory slot r important to u.
Hmm, just got mine and have that horrible sinking feeling that I've blown £400 on something that I'm not going to be very happy with.
First, it crashed when loading the customisations, so I hard reset and this time it went ok, but then another application (Touchflo) crashed soon afterwards. It's been ok since, but doesn't inspire confidence.
Second, Touchflo is quite laggy at times and also fiddly, these may be issues for me because I have big hands.
Third, the whole Touchflo thing seems a bit fiddly, I'm almost tempted to run with a standard HTC or Windows 6.1 homescreen to see if there's any improvement.
Fourth, the soft keyboard has keys that are very close together, even in portrait mode the keys are a bind to use.
Fifth, wifi not working very well with my router, keeps disconnecting, but my TyTn2, S730, S710, TyTn, E51 all work ok on it.
I've not had a chance yet to test battery, call quality etc.
Fingers crossed it's just a learning process and with time maybe the whole Touchflo thing will be refined a little more.
It certainly doesn't feel anything like as slick as my Ipod Touch for typing, browsing, music etc.
I have a bad feeling that I should have waited for the 3g iPhone.

Hey, don't get too down so soon...have a look for the Diamond tweaks - they'll speed up your device (especially TouchFlo) like you won't believe!
That's the difference between the Touch Diamond and the iPhone. It's much easier to fix problems with the Touch Diamond through registry edits and third party software, than it is to fix problems with the iPhone...

Yeah, but why the heck do we have to!? Can't HTC build a quality device that just works out of the box?! Then leave it to us mostly to customize it and somehow improve its usability!? Man, everyday I read about newer and bigger bugs and flaws. May be most of them will be overcomed thanks to this comunity, but were is HTC with its support for its high-priced devices!?
I'm a tech geek alright, and I love having all the newest tech gadgets around. I've wanted to get a WM phone so many times throughout the last few years but they were always behind in lots of aspects compared to the Symbian ones. Then HTC released its TyTNII with its holy specs, great design and somewhat compact size. This was my phone! Yeah, right! Then I found out about this huge issue with the video performance and followed it for about three monts waiting for a solution either from HTC or XDA. And OK - HTC had some problems with Qualcomm support for its stolen from Broadcomm chipsets whatever. So they announced Touch Diamond with a new chipset and "3D GPU" which "processor enhances the user interface". And then again it needs tweaks to make it - not better, but just usable. Then all the other bugs and flaws users say about in this forum.
Well damn you HTC, I'm about to leave the idea of having WM phone again. And that from a fan of yours that followed you back from the era of Qtek devices.

So wht is the verdict guys... is it worth buying it or wht i was planning on buying it but i heard a lot rumours tht is it really not worth it... cause the main problem is it is really slow!!!! even after applying the tweak to speed up the phone cause after tht it seems u'll need to soft reset a couple of time and even hard reset....
So the million dollar question is buy or not to buy???

Maybe a WM device just isn't for you. I wouldn't be happy if I wasn't constantly fiddling anyway, so it's better for me to get a device that needs improving than to get a device that works fine (because fiddling will break it).
I've asked this a few times but to no avail. It's not anyone's problem but mine but I don't know how to fix it.
I've only done two mods to the phone.
The disabling of the auto-attach.
And the Boost TFL3D Performance mod#1 on the mod list.
My problem is simple.
The phone lags....
For example, when you click the people icon and then click your contact list, the damn phone takes forever to pull up on the screen.
The reason I sold my Touch Cruise is because this phone had a faster processor.
Please, can anyone tell me how to increase the speed of this slow azz phone?
If I can't do anything about it, I'm buying an iphone or something else.
Thanks much,
Mark
Certainly the best way to speed up the phone is to flash a custom ROM to it. There are many out there that are MUCH faster than the stock ROMs. I highly recommend Dutty's V1.2 rom, but there are certainly others.
Marky Marky Read read mate first
I have owned most HTC phones and after tweaking this is my fave and fastest so far...
Firstly what what ROM version are you using?
First post. Glad to meet u all.
I had official Vodafone spanish ROM until yesterday. My last phone was a QTEK s100, so no Wireless, no GPS, no Gsensor, no light sensor, no WM6.1, but it was fine, speed was OK. Diamond had poor speed compared to S100.
I flashed with the new official ROM from HTC and it seems a new phone. Try it.

Cool, I highly recommend flashing to Duttys ROM 1.2 at the Mo 1.3 should be with us in the next few days - I understand your frustration m8. I have been using these toys for years and they always need tweaking (but thats become half the fun)
What I will say is that you will se significant increases in speed from 1.37 which in honesty I thought was ****e and bug ridden so no surprises at your dissapointment. We are still a little way away from the perfect ROM but every time gets closer - rest assured. I think you will be pleasantly surprised after flashing to Duttys.
If you need anything else just shout shout.
NB. enable all the power management functions in schapps config and your battery will also last a hell of alot longer.

Sorry my bad. I was referring to the thread starter
The latest ROM is 1.93 - and even without additional tweaks, it speeds up the diamond significantly. Make sure you flash that before tweaking and than complain again.

I second that. 1.93 is the Rom all Diamonds should have. Upgraded mine and im very happy with it. Phones very speedy now. Good luck!

Thanks Ta, just an update.... I installed (and donated) to Dutty's new ROM. All I can say is THANKS... Great install, great ROM, works fantastic.
Now if I could just change the "video call" softkey for "contacts" in the phone screen, I'd be super happy.
Thanks again,
Mark

Then I'm glad I can make you super happy!!
Go here and download the softkey manager(it's free) http://www.fantasticbytes.com/downloads.php (make sure you tick the "HTC Diamond Mode" checkbox on the main screen).
Doesn't that soft key manager just change your today screen softkeys? I think the OP was referring to the dialer screen soft keys...

Andy,
Thanks but isn't this the program that changes the softkeys on the home screen and not any other screen?

Thanks much,
Mark

Can't help you but hope you're sure other phones will be faster. I thought with the 500 MHz processor in my Mio A701 it would be very fast compared to other WM phones at the time just to realise they were all slow.

It's on a stickie at the top
Reports are that it only really works reasonably well if it is cooked into a rom. Try L26 or Anril´s roms that are in the ROMs section.
If you use the former you´ll need to install an excellent little tool by JeckyllHyde called TF3D Standby, which will ensure your phone can enter standby (the drivers needed for TF3D to work prevents this).

thanks for the help!
Heh heh, that's my video. balleklorin75 is correct, however I am using MBarvian's Solace ROM and have TF3D installed on it. I do use TF3D Standby, as well. Otherwise the phone goes batty when you try and put it into standby.

I don't use MSN. I'll see if I have the .cab laying around somewhere on my laptop, along with the .cabs for the music and album. It's not really ready for everyday use, but it's fun to play with.

It's a bit laggy. That said, if we could get around the standby issue I'd use it as my default interface. I don't because it's so annoying to have to turn it off and on along with the phone, everytime.

You're probably better off going that route, as Manila 2D is much faster and easier to manipulate, just not as flashy.
TF3D was never really ready for prime time, it was just fun to fiddle with; but if you want, I'll find the cabs that you'd need for it. It is fun to turn off M2D and fire up TF3D every now and again just to show it off to someone, but it can't be reliably used as an everyday interface.
some help please!!! i don't know what to do...

Check out this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337898 for software recommendations from other XDA members, however it depends on how you use your phone...gamming, business, video, music etc.......Also like dzelaya18 said in the post above yours, touchflo 3d is still being developed (i think) and requires a reset several times a day and is still very laggy...I would reframe from using it and go with Touchflo2....it is very nice and is included on almost every Rom in the Rom section...go there..I use Hyperdragon and PDA, both are good....
@dzelaya18 see what you started with your youtube video...ur famous...LOL...
Touch flo 3d for tilt
hope fully you should get it here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser..........................
I was running the L26 ROM (which has touchflo3d built in) and I think that its good enough to use on a daily basis. Just so long as you remap the ptt button to toggle manilla on or off. I wouldn't use touchflo3D as a cab because I think that is too slow for everyday use. Well anyways if you wana try the ROM out for yourself its right here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=436446
