Hi folks!
A friend of mine (really *g* - i keep making backups) managed "somehow" (of course he did nothing, just wanted to delete some double contacts on the sim card via sim_mgr) to purge all his contacts on his Kaiser -> and clever thing: after sync they are gone now on outlook too.
Now the question: Any ideas how to recover them?
There is NO exchange server in the back so activating the registryhack for the hidden "Recover Deleted Items" item in the "Extras" menu does not help.
There is no "damaged" *.pst file, so most of the "recovery tools for outlook" wont work as they adress only this kind of problem.
Standard file recovery tools (getdata back, rstudio etc.) wont work too, because the related pst file is not deleted - just parts of it. So the file remains on the same physical space on the harddisc and forensic tools wont help too.
Any other idea to get to the lost / deleted contacts either on the PC or PDA side?
Regards, Licht
(PS: I guess from now on he will use Spritebackup as told *g*)

Dunno about you, but when my Contacts on Outlook get deleted, they end up in my default PST file's "Deleted Items" folder, ready to be copied/moved back to the Outlook Contacts folder when I need it.
Unless, of course, I purged the Deleted Items folder as well, in which case, I'd be screwed.
Backup, backup... and backup.

Maybe the chap had some kind of "purge Deleted Items on Exit" setting set up?
In any case, methinks it's likely your friend may have to re-build his Contacts.
My own backup routine:
1. My Kaiser? every night
2. My PST file? I make a PST backup of my Contacts folder alone every time I make major changes/additions to my contact list (which is probably at least once a week). And I'll keep a zipped up copy on my thumbdrive or email it to my gmail account.
Quite paranoid about it, actually. About a thousand contacts, mostly business-related.

Paranoia is GOOOOD... I backup mine to my work laptop, 2 separate drives on my home desktop and also my home laptop. I've only ever lost important data once (in 1992) and once is enough.

ive searched and cant find the answer to my question. anyway how can i retrieve deleted contacts? for some reason my contacts were deleted so i tried to sync with outlook and copy contacts from outlook but now those are gone too. please tell me there is a way to retrieve them.
Did you do a backup recently? If you have a backup you'll be okay. If not, well maybe someone else can help ya.
As far as I know once they are gone there's no way to bring they back. Next time get PPCPimBackup. Keep it on your storage card in a folder marked backup. It backs up contacts, calendars, and other info onto your memory card. so if you lose everything you can restore it immediately.
Actually if he did a sprite back up with the contacts on his phone he'll be okay. Otherwise you can go into xp & do a system restore. You'll be okay. Just slow down & be patient. I'm sure you either have a ppc back up with the cotacts or XP system restore enabled, right?
i did not do a backup recently. i usually just sync with outlook to have another copy of my contacts. i can try to xp system restore. did not think of that. thanks.
No problem. Yeah, it's a pain & I had to sys restore from losing them a few yrs ago w/ Wireless Sync. Just make sure your device doesn't overide your desktop after you sys.m restore or you'll come full circle.

i did a system restore and my contacts do not come back.
check yr outlook's "deleted items", there could be a copy over there.
thanks everyone. i found a copy of the outlook archive on a flash drive i used to transfer info between work, school, and home. got most of my contacts back. now i guess my question is switch between phones for big parties to avoid losing or breaking my tilt so i copy my contacts to the sim. how do i get it to copy in the same format as in outlook? ex. in outlook the names are filed as first and last but when its copied to the sim its filed as last and first.
I usually find items deleted during synchronization in the Deleted Items folder.
Gosh! You've replied to a thread which has died seven years ago, dealing with active sync/outlook.
Wonder if the hint you've given will be any remedy here at all
(Android for Kaiser is next door )
okay... so i have accidently deleted my contacts. Yes very stupid of me. i know there probably is nothing i can do but at this point im desprete. anybody know of a way to undelete contacts?
unless you had them backed up via some backup program (PIM backup, SPB Backup), or synced to your computer...I can't think of a way...

yea.. thats what i figured.. thanks though
If they were at some point synced with your PC & your talking about losing them in both places you can use XP system retore for the PC & then re-sync.
Otherwise there's not much you can do.

System restore, isnt that just system files ?
I am pretty sure that no data at all is altered, it even says that no data is changed when you run it. Could be wrong though.
If your contacts were synced to an exchange server chances are that the IT department running it conducts regular backups and you could restore your contacts that way.
Basically, is there any copy of your contacts anywhere? Home computer? Laptop? Work server? A backup? Or perhaps someone stealing (touch wood) your data
System Restore works? It happened to me. . . LOL but that works for sure?
Try this in the future https://zyb.com/ . that might help
If you use Activesync with Outlook.
Look in your deleted items directory in Outlook on your PC/Laptop, you will find them there. Just select all and move them back to your contacts folder and when you next sync it will put them back on the device.
Same goes for anything like Outlook mail, Notes or Calendar items...
THANK YOU!!!! How do you select them all? I have 2007 version BTW so how?

Usual windows, left- click the first then SHIFT-click the last or CONTROL-left-click to select seperate ones. Right click and move to Personal folders/Contacts.
BE CAREFUL here.. when you choose where to move them, select the small '+' symbol at the side of Personal Folders to open, DON'T click on the actual Personal folders as it will just push them straight into the root folder and cause you problems.
EDIT: when I said select 'all' I meant all the contacts...Don't just select everything including mail to put in the contacts directory. Contacts to contacts, mail to mail etc...
I just clicked edit>select all and just moved them all to contacts!! THANK YOU AGAIN YOU SAVED MY ASS!!!
System restore doesnt restore the content of pst files or mailboxes- that would be insane! Imagine doing a system restore and losing your appointments/emails/contacts that you have received since...
Next time sign up for a free mozy account and save your pim data etc to their secure online storage site.
ODD, it says you have to pay?
Oops that the my referral link for paid for accounts!
Have editted it to the free mozy service now.

Told ya!! Voodoo dolls!!! (private joke...)
I deleted the contacts from my sim and accidently deleted them from my phone. I had them all backed up to outlook, but when i synced it to outlook it erased them from outlook also. Is there a way to undo the delete? I have not made a sprite backup. Can anyone help me get these contacts back?
Also i checked the archived and deleted folders and got some of them back but not all.
Sounds like you had it set sync outlook to whats on you phone (witch on this case was nothing). I've done this before. Usually I edit and add contacts to my phone and have Outlook sync to my phone. BUT if you erase the contacts on you phone be sure to set it so you phone syncs to Outlook.
I'm afraid you are out of luck. You going to have to do it manualy unless someone knows another way, but I don't think so...
Sorry, I know how fustrating it is.
This actually hapened to me the other day.
I was able to recover my contacts from the Deleted Items folder in Outlook [2003]. Try looking there. This depends a lot on your Outlook deletion settings...
Just an idea.

Yea I did but, my settings in outlook we're not correctly set to archive my contacts. Oh yea i had recently upgraded to the tilt from the blackjack II and had all my contacts stored on the blackjack II as well but when i plugged it into outlook it wiped them out too. I did upgrade to office 07 but still no luck.
Check your trash if you did not erase the trash bin your contacts will be in there...otherwise your contacts are gone

When u say trash bin are you talking about the deleted items folder?
how can I simply back up my phone contacts or simcard contacts to my computer?
just in case my phone crashes, or I lose my contacts by accident
so yeah how can I back up my contacts to my pc, so i can recover them to my phone later or at least view the numbers on my pc for manual backup
so its not possible or something? lol
Go into your root directory, and copy PIM.vol into your sd card...everytime you format the phone copy and paste the PIM.vol back into the root directory. It should overwrite all of your contacts information.
Phone>via ActiveSync>PC (Outlook) From here export Contacts as a file. Deposit somewhere safe.
If both phone (including SIM) and PC are fu**d up, you're still able to get back all contacts next time.
Import file in Outlook>Activesync> Phone.
Success!

you can olso use pim packup, i use it every time i flash a new rom
My way is the easiest.
I just use http://sn1-p3.myphone.microsoft.com/
For me PIMbackup48 is the easiest way as you can schedule it, and it can create a backup file anywhere on the sd card. I usually keep 10 days of these small backups.
Don't restore a PIM backup if you use Active sync. Arghh.
Or if you do, don't get the PIM backup to do contcts and calendar and tasks or anything else ActiveSync can do for you.
I use ActiveSync and before doing a hard restart I backed up using PPCPimBackup too.
ActiveSync restored all my contacts, calendar events, tasks etc. Then when I restored using PPCPimBackup before I realised what was happening, I had 2 of every contact and calendar events (Birthdays, reoccuring events, holidays, the lot) on my phone, and then as Actvsync did its job, I had two of everything on my computer too.
So now I will use PPCPIMBackup to do SMS messages etc and the stuff ActiveSync doesn't do, and let ActiveSync do what it does best.
(I was able to recover though. I had a backup of my Outlook contacts in a PST file, so I deleted them all, when there were none, I reimported them to Outlook, ActiveSync put them on the phone, for the Calendar events, I searched and sorted by creation date and was able to pull all the duplicates out that way).

Good. any way for sms messages like this in a file ?
I'm screwed, I can't believe this happened. I reformatted my PC. Installed fresh and clean version of Outlook. Installed MS ActiveSync. The very FIRST thing I did was set the ActiveSync options to have the PHONE replace OUTLOOK, thinking this will put all my contacts, calendar appointments, etc back in outlook. For some unexplained reason, that setting was ignored, and when I synced it, it deleted everything from my phone. A years+ worth of information I can't get back. So my question is:
Is there any way to recover all my lost phone numbers, appointments, etc? Or am I really SOL? I'm praying perhaps there's some file recoverable file on the phone or... I don't know. Help!
go to the recently deleted folder or something like that on outlook - this happened to me and luckily they were all in a deleted folder on outlook on my pc so check there
It was a fresh install of windows, and thus a fresh install of outlook. It was because outlook was completely 100% empty, that it erased (overwrote) everything I had on my phone when it synced. Hence there is nothing in the deleted folder...
ugh, I've done this by accident myself...
This doesnt help you now..
but it will help you from doing it again.

i wish i could help now
Did u make a backup somewhere else, like PPCPIMBackup or Microsoft MyPhone?
I don't think you can get the data back...
But I don't know why it delete your data. I reinstall my PC many time, and when I sync with my X1, the outlook copy data from phone, it doesn't delete anything.
Poor you....

Yeah, so did I, so I was shocked that the setting "Replace Outlook data with phone content" didn't take. Backup in spades and don't make the same mistake I did. I'm still crying from what I lost
