Silly question...
...but have you tried a soft reset?
Open windows explorer and navigate to \Windows\Start Menu. Do you have 2 folders called "Programs" and "Settings"?
If the settings folder is missing, just create a new folder and name it Settings then soft reset. Your settings menu under Start Menu should then magically return!
If you have both folders already, then I have no idea whatsoever why your settings menu under start has disappeared! Someone else will be along shortly to assist!

Thanks a lot Steve... that did the job!!! First it failed, made the folder Settings but it disappeared after a soft reset.... Then I realized... I have a Dutch OS.. (hate it) so created a folder Instellingen.... And... voila... have my settings back.
Thanks again.

I helped someone, and learned a foreign word! So a cool day all round
I did the very same thing once. Not nice the blind panic feeling is it?!
Thanks for letting us know it worked!

Can someone tell me how to "clear" the recently used apps when you hit the start menu? I find it cluttering and would like to clear it if not eliminate it altogether. Any ideas? Thanks!
sometimes help soft reset, but not everytime..
there is a software.. called.. "clearmenu", or "clearitem".. or just "clear" which is attached to many cooked rom, that is to be installed to your Windows/Startup folder.. which will clear everything in your most recent used list on every soft reset. You can clear it without soft reset, in case you are wondering. and soft reset will not do the job if you dont have the software.
i do not want to spam this thread and discuss it with you, but do not agree with

interesting.. but can I check with you the OS that you are using? Or, better still, you just go into your "\Windows\Start up\" to check if there are anything there, that starts with a 'clear'?
Anyway, since you said "sometimes" soft reset works, I would assume that it is not a repeatable process. If that's the case, probably that the 'sometimes' is the case where the regsitry got messed up and the 'recent used list' gone, and hence coincidently it worked as you wanted to.
Anyway, it is quite a new discovery, but just check with me the `start up` menu (better still, list everything there, can't be too much stuff there), to see if there are any working ones there.
ok, what i want to say is that clearing with apps you mentioned is not only one solution and as you correctly typed, it is done only "sometimes" and i was never trying find out when this happened (or why). now correct?
Help
Ok, guys, there has to be a better way to clean out the recently used apps menu. Anyone???
there is a registry hack... anyone????
Use MortScript and create a text file called cleanup.mscr and place the following in there:
Code:
ErrorLevel off
RegDeleteKey HKCU,Software\Microsoft\Shell\TaskSwitch,1,1
Place this file in \Windows\StartUp and it will clean up the Recent Menu Items in the Start Menu at every reboot.
big thanks!
do you happen to know the reg location of "recent programs" listed in "start"?
Delete the string entries in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TaskSwitch then soft-reset. That'll get rid of the recently used app list on the Start Menu.
I have been using the attached file since I had my Wizard and it works great on my Kaiser too! Just put the "startclean.exe" in your "\windows\startup" folder and it will remove the most recently used apps from the menu after each soft reset.
Someone posted this file a long time ago and I can no longer find the thread.
Use this program !!
http://mobile-sg.com/software/?p=ClearTemp&platform=ppc
soft reset is OPTIONAL !!
Maybe I am overlooking something... but, is there a way to permanently prevent recently used applications from showing up in the Start menu?
Thanks!
I'm being extremely dim here. I'm attempting to copy a shortcut to the start menu folder, but when I paste it in in either PC windows explorer, Resco or mobile explorer either as paste or paste shortcut it disappears into the start menu/programs folder and doesn't appear in the start menu. Any idea?

that's weird because every program i have installed on my device shows up on the list.. hmm ... i'll have to play around with device when i get home.
It's a replacement handset running 6.1. TBH it seems a bit flaky- I didn't have to set up the screen etc when I unboxed it- booted straight to the today screen. I'm going to hard reset before I load more on. I'll let you know.

hard reset is a good choice if you want the phone restored to original condition when it first came out by manfacturer (assuming no rom or spl flashes). I'll post and see what i get when i get home as far as program popping in list for start menu.
Just completed the hard reset and reinstall. All is well and works as it should inc the start menu. I was suspicious when the new handset (delivered without the battery installed) booted straight to the today screen. This time I had to set up the stylus and go through the tutorial- the only time I was glad to see it!
Thanks for your suggestions thesire.

np we r all here to help each other.
The Quick Menu that is normally located in the top right hand corner of the screen has disappeared on my TyTNII. Tried a soft reset and that didn't help. Don't want to do a hard reset as it takes ages to reload all of the software and data. Does anyone have any ideas. Any suggestion is welcome?

when u click on the screen where should be the icon, does it load the menu?
Try running Quickmenu from the Programs folder. That should fix things.
Make sure that there is a Quickmenu shortcut in your Device>Windows>Startup directory. This will ensure it starts after soft resets.
It's is a good idea to invest in a good backup program like SPB Backup which I use or Sprite Backup. This ensures that you save all your PIM info, messaging, settings, shortcuts etc etc. If and when you do need to perform a hard reset, you just run the executable that the backup program creates, and voila, you're good to go.
I normally backup once every week to ten days.
Hope this helps,

MAC
Thanks for the quick response. That may be my problem. It is not in my startup menu, but I also don't have a Quickmenu icon on my program window? Maybe it got deleted? How do I restore it?
When I tap in the top right corner where the icon used to be, nothing comes up. I think I must have deleted the program somehow?

I think you may have deleted it inadvertantly. Just restore it and make sure that there is a shortcut n your startup folder.
Here is the App and the two dll files to drop in your windows directory. It is an executable, no need to install. Just copy the executable anywhere on your device and create shortcut in startup folder.
Thanks - very much appreciated. Loaded and working. Great. Have a nice day!

Hello XDA-Friends!
Since yesterday i have a problem with the entry "settings", the last point in the Startmenu. I can't open it anymore. Every time i click on it, nothing happens
Before this problem appeared i installed the program "Pocket Mechanic Professional (v2.98)" for WM6. Does it have something to do with my problem?
I would be happy if somebody know how to fix this problem because without the menupoint "settings" i can't change any settings
My phone is a XDA Diamond with ROM v2.03.207.2
Hallo,
I have the same problem. Until now I didn’t see any connection between installation Pocket Mechanic and Settings key problem. But as you mentioned the possibility I realized it’s the same situation.
Did you solve your problem NiceReisgericht? Or anyone else can help?
Thank you
Roman
Hello!
I couldn't solve that problem so i had to reinstall my firmware :-/
Did you find a solution?
Greetz!
Hi all,
same by me. But only after i "clean the registry" with this tool.
I think there was a needed key deleted.
Can anybodey help?
kleiner
Were you not able to open settings from the settings tab rather than the start menu?
Sorry for the late reply. Well it´s quite a long time ago, but as far as I remember, there was a folder "Settings" missing. So I had to recreate this folder in the windows explorer > Windows > Start Menu. There are supposed to be two folders "Programs" and "Settings"? If the Settings folder is missing, just create a new folder and name it "Settings" and soft reset...
