TomTom POI - USA Traffic Cameras - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I searched through all of the free traffic cam data bases and found a few FREEWARE TXT files with 2455 different Traffic Camera POI's. I edited the files as a .CSV in Excel and then used TomTom's Official unsupported TXT -> OV2 software to convert them to OV2 (TomTom's format). Then copied the files to the directory containing my maps of the USA, then went into TomTom and enabled SPEEDCAM as a POI. Then I went into the Preferences and edited the POI for SPEEDCAM to warn me when ever I get within 300yards of one.... NICE!
Attached is the Traffic Cam POI's, TomTom's own conversion software, and a few more POI's I found as freeware.

In my area, they have Red Light Cameras... They are a BIOTCHS! You cannot fight it in court, numerous pictures, and a high quality video of the entire act. The police come in with computer video presentations and show everything... and they will do 10+ people in a row... very lucrative for the city.
Ron

wow. I didn't know these were out there! Are they in cities or on the Interstates or both????

Just installed and ran TomTom on my latest trip. What a nice surprise to find that the red light cameras in Germantown (near Memphis) are included! I'd guess the same could be said for other red light cams as well.
Thanks!!!

cool find and work. Gonna try it out.

I know of some that aren't showing up. Let me know what to send you to get them added.

Traffic Light Cameras in L.A. - Yup!
Installed and intentionally drove by a red light camera in Los Angeles (Melrose & La Cienega for those who care). It absolutely showed up!
I believe, based on when the alert actually went off, that I will reset to advise more in advance than that suggested in the first post.

You can add them to your TomTom under Change Preferences > Manage POIs > Add POI. If you want to post the Red Light coordinates I could add them to the database.
Post coordinates to new POIs like this:
Red Light Camera 21.37861, -158.14242
Thanks,
Ron

Yeah... that bugged me for a while. I even found a cool BMP for the icon, but TomTom wont use it. So, the red warning square is good enough for now. The BMP icon is included with the USA Speedcam TomTom.zip file. So, if someone gets it to show up properly in TomTom, Let us know.

Resize it to 22 X 22 instead of the 32 X 32 you have it at. I did it but as a crop I couldn't get it sized down maybe you have a better program than I do.

tag for later

Here is an update with 5 new cameras in the DFW area that I know of. I think there might be a few more, I'll keep my eyes peeled! When I added them I just left them named as the intersection where they are located.

U CAN Animate Large weather radars and Sat's

Everyone At XDA has given me so much I feel like I need to Give a little back.
I learned this when I had my treo 650, If you hate the tiny radars and satelite pictures you get on your phone, or don't want to load the whole weather page from your local news site, here is my fix for that.
1) on your computer find the local radar or Satelite that you want on your phone. (if you want animated view, animate 1st.)
2)Move cursor over map and right click mouse. Select properties.
3)High lite the Address (URL) right click mouse copy and paste in an E-mail and send it to your phone.
4) once on your phone you can open the e-mail and just select the URL address and your browser will load it. Save it to favorite's and you got it.
You only have to do this one time is seems that updates and changes are automaticaly saved to the same URL address.
5)the following web sites I know work where I am. P=Pic/A=Animate
Wungerground.com (P&A)
Accuweather.com (P&A)
bigblue marble.com (P&A)
Intellicast.com (P)
(intellicast and big blue marble sat's photos are huge(date size) but pretty and detailed)
Noaa Radars USA (Use Standard Version link below NOAA Emblem) (P&A)
National Hurricane Center Sat's (P)only
Localwireless.com USA (P&A)
I used them during the 2005 hurricane season and was well informed
Try your locals and nationals good luck' Jami J
Java loads and Flash will not work on my phones (TREO 650) Or (TILT)
dose anyone know how to make them work?
Nice tip, thanks. I check Weather Underground every day on my PC but hadn't thought to try it yet on my Tilt.

What gps software to use for hiking / geocaching?

Hey all,
I want to use my Tilt while hiking or geocaching. While the navigation software like TomTom is cool its not what I'm looking for. Instead something that shows breadcrumb trails and waypoints would be better for me. Something like the default on the eTrex or similar? I'd prefer free but am willing to pay for the right app also.
Thanks!
Yesterday, someone asked for a GPS tracking program for skiing.

Maybe that program could be useful for you.
Edit:
You can import google earth maps, you can import/export Paths/Routes/Tracks and you can import/export waypoint!
Edit again:
It's a 14 day trial
$33.99 for a normal license and $65.43 for a pro license
GPS Tuner is fantastic for hiking. It does the trails and waypoints as you want, and is able to import and export to Google Earth format so you can see your path on your PC too. The only drawback to geocaching is that when the phone goes into standby, the GPS chip shuts off, so you need to get a program like AE Button Plus to force the phone to stay on with one button click, and turn off the screen with another button click. I tend to use a BT-338 external GPS receiver when I geocache, however, because it is much more accurate than the built-in GPS in the Tilt. (It has a Sirf III receiver chip as opposed to the Qualcomm-whatever chip in the phone.)
Falcon, eh? Colorado Springs here!!!
Run Gps
Run GPS is awesome. I use it for hiking & crosscountry skiing. It works great, even in stand by mode
I use GeoScout for geocaching - links to geocaching.com directly which is nice - pulls down caches, logs, maps, etc.
For Geocaching, I recommend Beeline. http://visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/default.htm It doesn't display maps, but it does handle lots of waypoints. Mine tilt is usually loaded with about 5000 geocaches. It also display cache information from the gpx file so caching is paperless.
I tried GPS Tuner. I like some of the features. It will download maps over the air. This is a nice feature. It doesn't handle a big waypoint database very well. After about 150 waypoints, it starts to slow down.
Neither is perfect. I don't hike without goecaching, so Beeline is my choice. If you're mainly hiking, I think GPS Tuner is very nice. I watch the release notes for both and wait for one to suit me better.
I see DeLorme's Topo 7.0 will work with a touch-screen PDA when used with their Street Atlas 2008 mapping software. Might take a lot of memory for all the map data on a card though.
Nice thing is that you can use it in rural areas as it wouldn't require an active connection to an online mapping server like TeleNav or others.

Was just wondering if something like GPS Tuner/Run GPS would store single points? I like photography and I'd find it very useful to store away the GPS cordinates of where I'm taking a shot in some form....

Thanks for all the ideas. I'll be trying out most all of these. I did download beeline last nght, and it is Very eTrex like, so probably the closest to what I'm looking for. Too bad you can't do background maps on it though.
I tried my kaiser with a number of apps for some topo nav/geocaching, none of the apps seem to work very well. The biggest problem for me was battery drain. If your doing caches you can drive to you'll probably be ok, but if you have to hike an hour or 2 the kaiser doesn't cut it.
best app was beeline but I'd go with a standalone gps device.
i use gps with UK os maps for mountainbiking. i have bought a big battery off ebay (about $10), 2800mAh with replacement back (its about 2x thicker than standard). it will last about 7 hours on continuous gps and i also take the standard one for backup

If you want to use the tilt to photograph, you can use KaiserTweak to enable GPS photo which basically puts your gps coordinates in the photos metadata (or something like that)
I regularly Geocache myself and have myself searched for the best navigation software to use for this pastime. I have tested just about every application so far mentioned in this thread but nothing, and I mean nothing, comes close to TrackyPro. GPSTuner was pretty good but TrackPro beats the lot of themo. It is perfect for Geocaching as you can download Geocaches from Geocaching.com direct from within the application and also display descriptions of the Geocaches within the ap too! It really is an incredably intelligently written and intuitive piece of software. Please, please try it. You will thank me I promise. And no, I'm in no way affililated with the author of this software!!

BackCountry Navigator
I'm real fond of a program called BackCountry Navigator. Costs $30, and displays the USGS topo maps that I'm familiar with. They're downloaded from terraserver-USA, so they're as current as those kinds of maps can be, and I can have them with me so I don't need to be on the network. Given a few days of spare moments I got my whole state at 1:100000 scale, and all the national forest areas where I go at the more detailed 1:24000. I haven't tried it yet, but it's supposed to be able to get info straight from the geocaching site.

Diamond Weather Custom City

How do you set a city that isnt in the default list?
afaik you can only use the cities covered by accuweather.com, and i think they are all included as default.
Can anyone please tell me if you can also see a wether forecast on the weather tab or does it only show you the current weather?
I don't have the device yet, but all the screenshots I've seen of the weather page show a soft button (bottom left of screen) option called 5 Day. I'm assuming that's the forecast view.

It is the forecast view indeed. Gives you the Hi and Low temps forecasted over the next five days with the right weather icon.
Thanks... now only waiting for the pro to be released... I am so tempted to get a Diamond. But then again, I want a higher battery capacity, the flash with the camera, more RAM, microSDHC slot... ehm and keyboard
Accuweather covers every city in the world, the database for the HTC only has major cities, in this case the ones in all the states. I live in Hickory, NC. Is there any way to get this by editing the database or some sort of update?
That depends entirely on where the weather data is coming from. If it's straight from Accuweather, it may be possible to do a registry edit or something similar to get the weather for other cities. However, if the data is retrieved from HTC, it probably won't be possible as they'd only bother processing the data for the cities available on their devices.
I'm guessing/hoping that it'll work alot like the Touch so you'll be able to show your local area through amendments in the registry as noted above and in the following link:
http://blog.commsconsulting.co.uk/2007/07/26/local-weather-on-the-htc-touch/
Ah, well, I'd say that the Touch Diamond would be very similar to the Touch, so a similar registry edit should work.
Jersey is listed on AccuWeather but I can't find it on the diamond
http://www.accuweather.com/world-in...er&locCode=EUR|JE|JE---|SAINT HELIER&metric=1
Having a look for the reg key now, if anyone has found it already let me know!
- HKCU\software\htc\manilla
I Tried changing the registry to my city, but for some reason it goes to 6 cities all in asia?
Same thing happens when I change mine.
I thought it was because I was having to guess some of the Jersey code as it displays as EUR|JE|JE---|Jersey on the accuweather side but it looks like there is more to it.
My city is spelled wrong at the device.
Acuweather has it ok.
How do I fix that?
K
EUR|JE|Jersey would likely be Jersey in the Channel islands in Europe.
Wouldn't it be a bit more like USA|NJ|Trenton or something similar for a city in New Jersey????
Yes it would be for Jersey in the Channel Islands - that's where I am though
Be nice to get it working at some point, look's like there is something else that will be changing as well as just the string value as regardless of the value used it resets to 6 cities afterwards
Bad news
Hello guys,
I've managed to add a custom city to manila, but the bad news is, that manial will crash when it tries to download the weatherinformations.
here what I've done so far:
1. xxx_manila-file are SQLite-Database-Files... so get the SQLite Databaseprovider for Visual Studio from Sourceforge
2. Copy the file 2330fc3c_manila from windows-fir to your local system
3. Remove wrtieprotection
4. Open Visual Studio and add a new SQLite-Connection to that file
5. Open the Table "cities"
6. Add the City you whant to add (add one to the maximum id)
7. Close the connection
8. Copy the file to your device's windows-fir and override the existing file (user resco file-explorer)
9. Add the new location to the weather-tab
I will write a little program to edit the db-file soon... so you don't need a visual studio
I'd like very much to have mi city weather. I found the registry key too but if I modify the value with the code of my city it doesn't work, any news? I could try your solution importing the database file etc. but...will manila download the weather informations or still crash. I don't want to only add my city in the list, I want the weather of my city working.
Thank you for now
Hello,
I've tested now some other citycodes... no one worked... manily allways crash. I've no idea whats the problem... the "new city" is entered to the database as any "original". and the accuwaether-site for a city which work and a city which will crash manila are identicaly... sorry guys, but I think we have to live with the original cities.
I'm trying using your solution...I inserted the new row in the database and it's ok, but I can't overwrite the existing file in windows folder. I'm using resco explorer 2008 as you suggested. Any idea?
Thank you very much

Look in the map folder. There are .bmp files for each custom POI. Just replace them with bigger ones.
I am not sure if this can be done with the build in POIs.
I have the same problem with the pocketgps.com speed camera icons, have changed then to 44x44 icons from 24x24 and hasn't seem to change the size at all, they are still way to small. You need a magnifying glass to see them when they flash on the map
got the same problem really is small considering its a point of interest not a bloody tree! Only way i see the Speed camera poi is having the sound warning on which usually pops up the top left corner what is coming up.

I think your correct about the size of the images in the map folder and that you can change the size but its a lot of effort?? If anyone gives it the time maybe they could post the lager bmp images in a zip file??
I have the same problem - especially with speed cameras I think that its mainly because the maps were not designed originally for use on our new VGA screens - the maps are scaled automatically but the bmp images are not - maybe when we see dedicated ver 7 maps for VGA PDA's we'll see an improvement?
I have also button menu and font too small on diamond (vga screen)...
Tomtom icons
I have tried to reduce the size to 20X20, 40X40 and 44X44 but the BMP. are far to small.
(with the wrong size the pictures are red in TT)
Is there anybody who have ONE icon in TT with the right size?
Did you try 48*48?

Same here.
i don't thing we can do anything for this:
1) maps are not scaled in VGA screen. Infact, a greater area of the map is shown, compared to a QVGA screen (tried on both with two different phones). That is why, the POI icons are small, cos they follow always the 32x32 size. In fact, you will see an area 4 times greater than QVGA screens. Therefore, POI icons look 4 times smaller.
2) If you resize the icons to 48x48 or whatever, TomTom will scale them down to 22x22 automatically (auto-fit) if intelligent enough, becasue that is the size TomTom was designed to display. But it will probably simply not understand the bigger size and just display some rubbish with default resolution of 22x22, i.e., all red square.
Sorry. I see no solution. Maybe by using some overlay third party programs to show POIs and disabling TomTom internal ones. What was it called, "POI warner" I think?
Sorry, but also with 48x48 the icon is to small and only red.
What is de original size?
I must say when I first got my Diamond it was TomTom that I was looking forward to putting on there for the real VGA 'experience' and at first glance I was very impressed... but then I started using it for navigation and, not least given I use it in 2D mode, soon found that everything was a tad too small! I wasn't so fussed about the POIs but it was the map scale overall - at arms length I could hardly see the map detail and really didn't need to see for 10 miles around - it wouldn't be so bad if it didn't zoom out so much.
So, here's how I sort of fixed it.... a kind of workaround which disables TomTom's awareness of it being VGA. The upshot of this is that everything becomes a reasonable scale however the drawback is that it's a waste of VGA and at first glance you might think 'oh my God that's awful - so blocky!' but I soon found that when actually using it in my car I really don't now notice. The blockiness is down to running at a non-native resolution - like all fixed-pixel screens you end up with unclean lines.
Grab yourself a copy of the freeware resource PC tool Resource Hacker, make a copy of the TomTom Navigator.exe file on the PPC, and open it up with the tool.
Now find the resource CEUX\HI_RES_AWARE\2057, right-click it and delete it. It will likely take the whole branch with it if it is the only entry in there. Now save the resulting file (I got an error at this point - dunno if it's Vista or what but it still seemed to work) and copy the file back to the PPC (note it makes a backup so make sure you get the right one!) - you might want to call it something different so you can then have a choice of VGA or non-VGA TomTom's to run.
And that's it... I'm sure when you first see it in action you'll think it's horrible... but in use I think it is fine and indeed for me makes it at least usable once more.
Mathew
Wow nice trick man
POI's are now bigger but OMG this is very ugly lol !
Need anti-aliasing
Its nice but there are some bug for the text display
I actually find it okay when at arms length!
What were the text bugs you mentioned? (I must confess I've only used it a few times since doing this so could well have missed some major showstopper!)

Anything similar for iGO 8?
I didn't think iGO8 had any issues re size/legibility on the VGA screens?
It works fine, the black popup right above in the screen with the text (for example "no GPS") is to large. But thats not a big problem because it's not mention when you navigate.

Well, when you check how much satellites your GPS found, the numbers are displayed bigger.
And on the main screen, the speed indicator number is smaller than "km/h" .
But still nice
Great solution! Thanks.
It seems that TomTom 7 isn't really VGA-ready. Any news on an update?
Think it's very bad for business to offer such a bad solution for VGA screens, which are coming more and more.

import POI in iGO8

i'm searching how to import POI in iGO8 but not with KLM files.
we can import speedcams by creating speedcamupdates.spud so i would like to know if it's possible to import POI with this kind of files ?
iGO takes too long time to work with KLM files but i've seen that importing Speedcamupdates.spud take time but one time only.
Unless the KLM file is updated, it only reads it one time too. I have about 1000 POI's via KLM data files and iGO8 certainly does not re-read them each startup. It's obvious when I do update them.
so why my igo hangs up on the menu (search, manage, settings) when i put KLM files in userdata... if i remove klm igo start normally and dont freeze
How should I know? When I added the 1000 or so POI's on iGO8 it took about 2-3 minutes to finish. After that, it doesn't take any time if I don't change anything, and perhaps a minute or so at most when I update the POIs.

i tested again and now it's ok it hangs up about 2 seconds on the menu
i dont know why before it froze... i will test with more and more POI to see how it works... thx
Hi all.
I have also found that when you first add the camera or POI files, IGO8 will appear to hang the first time you start it having added or updated that info. Scared me the first couple of times as well. Now I have learnt to be patient.
What I would like to know is that when the KML files are added, they appear within the POI menu all at the same level but I know IGO8 supports POI levels, for example, currently all Banks sit at the top level yet I know I could create a top level menu entry called BANKS and then place all banks at the sub menu level to it, yet I can not see how to do this using imported KML files. This would make POI's much easier to use and access.
Anybody done it or got any ideas?? Thanks.

Thanks.

That has to be done within the KML itself. And for that, I'm not sure, but you might google around for a KML editor, or just a generic XML editor and then try to understand the Keyhole Markup Language keys to get what you want.
I have about 12 different sets of POI's I install and upgrade in iGO8 related to geocaching and benchmarking and so far it seems to do pretty well.. I update a file and it searches through and finds the new ones and adds them, etc.. Goes pretty quick just updating as usually there's just a few changes.
I wish there were a way to get a little more information on the POI in iGO but they aren't intended to be more than name/address.

Hi..
Me too looking for the solution for above.
Also the POIs added using KML always appear with the same icon (doesnt pick my customs icons, whereas built in POIs use these icons correctly). Any means to fix this?
Thanks
