methods to update rom using windows? - Palm Treo 750 ROM Development

yesterday I came across a page which gave two methods to upgrade a treo 750 (or similar from memory) rom, one method was using a sd card and the other was using the computer in some way, I unfortunately cannot now find that page again
currently running Cingular WM5 I'm trying to upgrade to WM6 vodafone, sim is locked (was planning to unlock after upgrade (bad idea?))
in my searches I came across XDAtools but that does not seem to work for me (says something about cannot establish a serial connection) and the built in installer in the exe will not work
I only have a 4gig SDHC card so do not believe I would be able to upgrade
using the sd card method (though have not tried)
mostly I am hoping someone here knows of the page, it talks about two methods
it was probably on XDA and probably the wiki, maybe the forum, though its possible it was on a treo forum, I cannot access the computer I used
alternatively if you know of other ways to upgrade using the usb cable that information would be much appreciated
lastly if this question has been asked again and again and again I am sorry, my searches of this forum and the wiki have not turned up what I am looking for as far as I can find

SD Update
You need to have a miniSD card formatted FAT32 and the card must not be HC. Copy your .nbh file to the card and rename it cheeimg.nbh. Insert the card into your Cheetah and put it into bootloader mode by holding down the media key and depressing the reset. the update process is displayed.

SD card not found, please help!!

Hi, im new to this but here goes,
I have an XDA iis but cant access my SD card through the PDA. I have tried 2 different SD cards but there is no option for it on the file explorer. Am i doing something wrong, or doesnt the XDA iis support 2Gb Sandisk ultra 2 cards?
The about page on the settings tab says expansion slot : Not in use.
The Pda came with the card when i got it second hand. I also updated to windows mobile 5, but no luck.
Any help would be apprecaited! Cheers Jon
You should firtst try with a different Card, better with more than one.
If it then still will not work i suggest you to send it either back where you bought it or try to get your warranty rights.
And rember if you choose the second one revert back to WM2003 first, otherwise they will reject!!

Installing to SD

Hi Peeps,
Its been a while since i've been in the PDA scene... the TyTN II tempted me back.
Took delivery of my SanDisk SDHC 4Gb card this morning, plugged in and working a-okay.
Now, I'm wanting to install all my apps now. The installer greys out the option to choose your own install location?! Wanting to keep system memory to the max you see...
Anyone know how i get around this?
Cheers,
Matt
Do you install using ActiveSync ? Which version?
I sure do... well i'm running vista so is the "Windows Mobile Device Center" now - version 6.1.6965
i am having similar problem but my sd install is not greyed out but there is a problem with programs that have to write to the SD card.
I installed 2 programs that I have installed on a WM 6 ROM on my 8525 - these programs have to sync data and the data is written to a folder where the program is installed. If I install the program on the main memory of the TyTN II then it works just fine but if install it to the SD card it will not work - it locks up when trying to write data on the SD card of the TyTN II.
Any ideas on how to change security or access to the SD card so the device has full access to it????
It looks serious problem
However, it could be that the application is not yet compatible with the Tytn II ?
I think it is worth to ask to the developer of the application, he might have a clue or could create somekind of debug tool to verify.
I have not installed anything to the SD though.

I'll try the drivers and let you know but the problem is that I this issue with 2 different programs both of which worked fine on my Hermes with WM6 Roms!
I tried the different SD drivers and the TyTNN II was not able to access the SD card at all until I uninstalled the driver.
Interestingly the problem is only when the applications try to write to the card while doing a "sync" process where the app writes updated data to the SD card. The program otherewise works fine and installs fine.
Btw , it is only a 2GB card. I tried reformatting it and using a different card but no luck.
I think the issue is some sort os a security thing where the OS is errantly preventing writing to the SD card within the application.
Any other suggestions? I'm going to notify the place where I bought the Kaiser but also going to try to contact HTC.
I contacted HTC and they said that the device hadn't "really been released" yet and that with third party software they would not be of any help !!!!!!!!!
Can't believe they were so unhelpful. I even explained that others were having some other issues with SD cards and that it was more than one progeam giving me problems.
His answer was to - "just install your programs in the main memory"
Hope i don't experience such a thing with my universal since i just ordered a 4gb sdhc 2 days ago!

Well, that won't work at all, since the Universal doesn't support SDHC!!!!
* unless you are using the new WM6 rom with SDHC support!

THAT SOUNDS Annoying
there are some programs that just dont work being installed on the external storage. spb mobile shell is one of them and i know their are others. its because of the way the os boots is has to be on the internal storage for it to work properly. its not a fault, its ben the same with wm5 some apps are just meant to be instaslled on the internal storage. so check on hte applications home page or where you downloaded it from for its compatability and installation instructions

Absolutely - however, in my case the program (according to the developers who are working diligently with me to solve this issue) say the program I have been sucessfully using 2003, WM5 and then WM6 installed on the SD card (for several years) will NOT work on the Kaiser.
There is undoubtedly something different about the device and how it handles communication with the SD card. I have tried differnt cards (size, brand etc) and still the Kaiser won;t allow the program to write to the card during certain phases of a "sync" process.
Hopefully this is not a major issue for others but for my sake I hope it is enough of an issue to get some attention form someone smarter than me so I can (selfishly) get a fix for my issue

Mini Sd Slot, problems

hi.
1st post and a tricky problem i can't overcome. i have a g4 wizard, and have done the hard spl thing so its 2.**,**.oilp (*=wildcards, cant remember number)
And Also flashed FariaWM6 on to the phone. the sd card slot used to work, but when i first recived the phone i pressed reset to manufactur defaults (o2 software) and inserted the 1gb sd card out of my mobile(as the previous owner wanted to keep thier mini sd card). it never worked. i have formatted the minisd in FAT, and FAT32, but it is still not recognised by the phone. in the about area of the phone it does say expansion slot is in use (regaurdless of sd in or absent) when i insert the sd card the light comes on (saying to me that it still knows something ) but its not avaliable via PC, Or the phone. yet works fine in my mobile(6280) still.
i have tried numerous tools on the phone for formatting the card, or just plain reading it. today i am going to collect the original SD card that came with the phone ( the only card to my knowlage that has worked)
The card i am trying to use is a sandisk 1gb.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, i have searched but cant find any posts with similar problems, so sorry if i annoy anyone by creating new.
any more info needed let me know, but i think i have almost covered everything.
Anybody?
Hellooo??? Boost!!!
70 views, could someone at least post back and tell me its f*cked if it is. i have run out of idweas, and if no one else got any then please let me know so i can stop fiddling with this problem. many thanks

Hi friend,
I'm having the exact same problem with my kaiser. Mine does change to expansion slot not in use when I remove the card however. I really need to get this fixed so I can take more media with me! Will some guru please let us know if a new rom might solve the problem or if there's a way to confirm a hardware problem?
Thanks!

Upgrading BA

Hey, im going to upgrade for the first time but have a few questions, in bootloader mode it says v2.08 but on the tutorial it says it should show 2.06 or 2.07 would it matter? i also heard to put unsigned roms on it has to be cid unlocked, but i cant find the unlocker anywhere. I am also having a problem, on the vista extra step, at step 8 both my computers does not show "Mobile Devices" and my final question, im a bit confused with the SD card, it says "Temporarily remove your SD Card (it may work for you with the SD card still in your BA, but you may not be able to enter USB mode when cradled)." and i cant not find anything else about it untill i read "(if removed earlier) Put back your SD Card before you do the setup. This way the installation from the SD will continue after you have done the setup" thats confuses me, what installation from the SD card?
Thanks in advance.
from what ive seen the blueangel doesnt need to be CID unlocked. or at least, i've never seen a referance to CID unlocking for the blueangel.
thats about all i know. sorry i cant be more help
oh ok, thanks for the reply
extrom on SD card
i would assume it will install the extrom which you COULD store on the SD card. So if you insert the SD card (with the extrom on it) before the setup, then the BA will install that.
ah i see, just to figure out the vista problem hopefully it will work once i have windows 7. Thanks

Which file did you rename to blacimg.nbh (that's correct and not blackimg.nbh)? Did you save it to the root of the sd card as suggested (although mine is in a folder and this also works)? Because the steps you are describing are correct and should work (work like that for me). The only thing I can think is that there is possibly something wrong with the file you are using. Is it one of your own cooked roms?

Thanx for ur reply
Yes, i cook my own clean ROMs, the ruu_signned.nbh is renamed to blacimg.nbh and is directly copyed to the root of my SD Card
I do not know what is wrong!

faced the same prob long time ago with a old 4 Gb card...no matter what i've did was not able to flash. However I sugest to reformat your sd card (FAT 32 and not on your pc/laptop, do it with your phone) and then try again after formating, altough it may not help. to be sure that you are not doing wrong try another SD card if possible.
Another option to check your self is flashing with ActiveSync after formating.
Good Luck
p.s. It seems this is happening often if you used your SD card in another device
I'd a similar problem while flashing on my old P3300
To avoid the problem, I'm using a 1gb micro sd dedicate only to rom flashing but with a single partition of 256MB.
dunno if this could help u
cheers
I was having exactly same problem today when I tried to flash - mine's 8gb mini SD which came as a part of package from Orange, U.K.. I ended up using normal USB cable but I was wondering why it didn't work...

Fashing with some big SD >4gb could generate some issue. Use one small dedicated to that and format it first in Fat32.
Hi Carl, thanks for your advice - it actually worked like a charm. I didn't really thing 8gb would cause this problem. I used just a plain 2gb ScanDisk card, formatted in Fat 32 and put only blacimg.nbh following normal procedures - thank you very much again!
My 2 cents
I had a similar problem not long ago with my 8Gb Micro SD that came with the card. I'd re-formatted it via the PC and altered the default settings based on a thread I read on here which was supposed to speed up access to the card. If I remember correctly it was changing the default allocation size.
Long story short, reformatted back to default settings and I was able to flash again from SD. IMO it's moreso the format of the card, not so much it's size as I never had a problem with flashing from card before tweaking it's format settings.
SD Card
I always flash from my SD card.
My latest card is a 16Gb class4 SanDisk, and I must have flashed more than 50 times from this. I always put my blacimg.nbh file in the root of the card.
Size of the card is not important, it just have to be formated in FAT32.
There are several reports that some brands of card do not work very well with Windows Mobile.
One time I purchased a Kingston card that simply would not work.
