Mobile phones don't have dial tones, unless you have a Jitterbug phone. You are hearing some other tone, or maybe the sound you are hearing is a byproduct of some part of the phone. For example, on the older model Motorola V3's the EL keypad backlight would emit a low volume tone when lit. Does your "dial tone" stop when the backlight dims or shuts off when in a call? If so then you are hearing the backlight. Most people can't hear it because it is above the range of normal human hearing.
If it is the backlight you are hearing you cannot increase the sound. It is what it is.

props for knowledge of the jitterbug.

If turning the volume wheel does not do it then there is no way I know of.
-Jay
not just 'a bit silent' then?
no it is realy silent .jou can hear it but if you hold your phone 20-30cm from you ,you cant hear it .
also when putting it on speaker you cant hear it.(because then you are more than 30 cm from your phone.)
when the pickup the sound is fine and loud.
I have the same probleme with my blackstone and its very annoying. if there is some noise you cant heard dial tone when you call someone.

Does anyone know how to increase the volume with voice commander? and also the ringer volume. I can hardly hear the voice commander and I cant hear the phone ring...
I have the same problem
I tried several registry settings, but the ringtone volume is very low now and can't set it back to original even if setting microsoft voice command to not to speak the incoming caller id...
Anybody out there... help !!!
I think I figured this out by accident. I'm using v2.17 and have a Cardo Scala 500 headset.
To make this simple, I'll refer to the volume controls as left and right; the left side being the pda volume and the right side being the ringer volume.
When not on a call, both volume controls are visible. When on a call, the left side disappears. This is probably by design. Unfortunately, the right side volume control appears to do nothing for me when I'm on a call. I found if I turn up the left side volume way up when I'm not on a call, the Microsoft voice is very loud and almost distorted when I listen through the BT headset. But when the call is made, volume returns to an good level and is clear.
When I first got my phone, I kept my left side volume low because I didn't like hearing all the click-click-click when using the stylus. I could barely use the phone because the volume through the headset was so low. No matter what I did, I couldn't get a good volume through the headset.
Now I keep the pda volume very high so I don't have to fumble with the phone to boost the volume right before answering a call. Calls are clear even if the Microsoft voice is a bit distorted and loud when setting up the call.
I was hoping this might be fixed in the newer ROMs.
Thanks for the quick reply 100Tbps.
But unfortunately the problem i'm facing is not exactly the one you had. My problem is that the ringtone volume on the phone has reduced after installing MS Voice Command (which I want to keep). Initially I had set it to speak out the caller name while incoming call, but that reduced the ringtone volume and the volume of the announcement of incoming caller was itself very low. Then, I tried fixing that by changing some registry values, to no avail.
Now i've disabled announcing of incoming caller name, and still ringtone volume is very low. Can't seem to increase even if all the volume sliders are up at max....
Still in a fix... don't want to hard reset and install everything again...
there is a reg edit for it. i found it in a universal forum or something
Thanks a lot grinny11.
I've installed the file. Would love to see what settings the cab file changes - just to learn a bit... i'm a noob here and a wanna be power user
Anyways, all i need to do now is to wait for someone to call me  don't have a landline or alternate phone.
Will update here if problem solved.
Didn't work
maybe will have to do hard reset after all
thats wierd. it works for me. volume of voice command is just as loud as any other ring tone
quick question..
i have never used voice commander before and i could not find the current info page.
Can anyone provide a link to a page with all it can do? What else can you aside from calling contacts? does it work well? im guessing its not free
thanks

or any on screen buttons in the HTC dialer. anyone know how to get rid of it? its supppper annoying
A little more information would be helpful -
1. does this tone happen when you press a button while on a call?
2. if it does - does your other party hear it or only you?
3. what buttons does it happen on touch screen buttons or only the buttons on the front of the phone?
4. is this when you have speaker phone on or a headset or simply using the phone?
5. is it only when you hang up or any button at any time while on a call?
6. do the buttons make normal sounds when you are NOT on a call?
7. have you turned off sound on your buttons - have you at least tried this to see if it kills the problem?
Bill
when in the dialer go Menu->Options then Keypad: Off
ahh keypad tones off got rid of the annoying beep lol thanks! wish there was a way i keep the beep for the numeric keypad without the obnoxious beep that came out of the speakerphone part rather than the ear piece when backspace/ call history/ speed dial is pressed
jut realized it still makes the annoying noise when it connects to a call
i found that someone had my exact problem on a wings smartphone. they edited the registires in order to turn it off. i played arround with mine all day but no luck. here is the thread if anyone can apply it to a kaiser id be very greatful!

HI guys! I have a little problem on my wings: when I'm already on a call and someone calls me, I don't recevive any acoustic alert; I mean, the screen shows me that there is another incoming call but if I have the phone at my ear I can't see the screen. Is there a way to make the phone ring or vibrate or anything else that tells me that there is another call??
THX
Settings=>Phone=>Call Waiting. Make sure "Provide call waiting notifications" is checked and then go into Settings=>Accessibility and change your In-call alert volume to increase the tone.
Thanks. I found out that I had changed too many keys in the registry
This is rediculous.. but apparently winmo doesnt allow you to play music while the phone is set to vibrate...
Is there any way I can get around this?
I dont want my phone ringing in the middle of class, and I dont want to risk forgetting to switch my phone back into vibrate after i finish listening to music.
In all honesty i dont see how this will be possible. I understand your issue however the X1 is effectively cutting off all sound from the unit, pretty much like hitting MUTE on your desktop/laptop master. I could understand if third party software could get around this but i just tested out youtube player for example and good as gold it cut the sound right off whilst on vibrate.
I dont think there will be a solution for this to be honest...i hope im proven wrong though, sure there will be a genius on here with an answer
Maybe I really am just asking for too much. But all of my previous feature phones allowed playback through headphones in vibrate mode. And if no headphones were plugged in, the device asked if I wanted to continue and playback music through the speakers anyway (while keeping vibrate mode active).
i may be a bit confused about your question.
im not sure but your phone shouldnt ring on your phone outlet speaker with headset plugged in.
i guess you can make a null ring tone....
I noticed this the other day in class also. I put my phone on silent and went to the music player and it wouldn’t give any sound to the headphone, the only way was to put the volume back up but this meaning if any one text or rang your phone the class would all hear.
I hope there is a solution for this
one fix is in the volume setting ( the one that pops up when you press volume up or down), turn the phone setting all the way down... you wont hear your phone ring but you can still play music.
another way is to just set the phone ring setting to just vibrate mode only. (haven tried it tho yet as no need for me too but just trying to offer solutions). lots of options in the setting, sound notification menu.
it might not be a one touch solution but i think it can be set up to the way you want it too.
I dont have a solution but I gotta ask... listening to music in class???? At the risk of sounding old fogeyish (I cant believe the spell checker let that word through) shouldnt you be listening to the teacher/lecturer?
Wait, can't you put the ringer on vibrate, but keep the system sound on? That's what I would do. I use the touch audio control so when I use the volume rocker I can switch between ringer and sytem.

No no you missed the point.
I'd listen to music on the way to school. Then I'd turn off the bluetooth once i was done listening. Heres is the problem, once i turned off the bluetooth headset i use, the phone returns to normal sound mode, and is free to ring during class if I forget to switch it back to vibrate.
And I guess I could just manually switch everything to vibrate, but on the weekends I like being able to hear my phone ring.
I'll just have to change the phone to and from vibrate mode when i listen to music I guess...
Why don't you set the ring volume to 0% (don't press silent or vibrate, just set the ring volume down) and leave the system volume where you want it?
Works without problems here.

Does setting ring volume to 0% make the phone vibrate?
Cause not hearing any ringing or getting any vibrating might be just as bad XD
Shadowdh, I was being a bit vague/mixed up, so the fault is mine. No need for apologies

dude you haven't even tried it and yet you already commented on it .heh
the answer is NO it doesn't set to vibrate not just yet. if you click you're speaker icon on your top left screen(almost) it will pop you up a volume panel which consist of left: the system sound and the right: the phone speaker sound consists of six levels each top most being the highest and bottom being 0%. then below a setting of 3 radio buttons for ON, VIBRATE, and OFF.
now setting the right slider to bottom most and setting the left slider on top most gives you full system sound but 0% phone speaker sound. the radio button is autonatically still at ON and not VIBRATE by then. that is your only choice so far.
another problem afterwhich is, you won't hear any phone ring whenever someone calls you up even through your earpiece. that's just darn. I guess it's just a winmo device problem aprt from your previous phones. SEs I guess.
things SE didn't consider to take a look coz SE people lifestyles are music, camera, and or business and or both.
one more thing, when you turn your volume maxed up. you phone will ring even when the earpiece is plug. there's just no setting to turn it off. I mean for silent users who lstens to music by earphones, most of the time they like it that the speakers are just off and every sound just goes by the earphones. There is simply no setting for that.
in previous model of SE's whenever you plug an earpiece and the phone recognizes it. the phone automatically turns to headphone mode, which utilizes only the earphone as the source of sound and nothing else UNLESS specified in the settings. there has been an issue that users forget to unplug their earpieces that they misses x number of calls the whole night while their phone vibrate silently on their bags or table with their earpieces plug. That is the reaon SEs newer models after k750i I think coz I got a k750 and a w800i which is consecutively released. the w800i and so forth features a earphone mode setting but their phone speakers still rings as well as sounds when an sms goes in even if the earpieces are plugged, without a setting to disable it.
It just the way it is, and some people still need that feature. Like me. I don't want people to hear my phone ringing in public places like a market, street at dawn or related areas. Whenever I wanted to listen to music when someone calls, send an sms, the phone just simply sounds off, publicly.
Another comment/workaround a read is a null tone. Might work, but you have to manually set a null tone for calls, as well as for SMS. without any automation like a uh NULL profile perhaps.

I've set my phone to always ring AND vibrate on incoming calls (so I recognize incoming calls even if the music in my living room is very loud ). So if I decrease the ring volume to 0% it does vibrate.
this is like saying i wanna close my eyes and still be able to see something.
As a more lateral solution, have you tried using something like SPB Phone Suite to set either manual or time based profiles?
I'm thinking you could have something like a travelling profile with bluetooth on and sound on and a school one with the phone/system on vibrate and bluetooth off. You could then either change manually with two clicks of the home screen or have it change automatically dependant upon time.
ill always use flightmode! easy and safe...

the problem I encounter here is that phone calls are muted and it's great, but it will still ring through the speaker if an sms is received
any solutions?
this makes it impossible to listen to music at quieter (and most usually boring) places!
Possible Solution
I'm not sure if this works on the ROM you're using, but I'm using Touch-IT 3.5 and it allows me to automatically put the phone on vibrate during appointments.
You could set your classes as appointments and not need to worry about it from then on.
Hey ZR owners, how is the ringing volume on the phone? I'm thinking about ordering one or two in the near future, but I read some reviews saying the speaker is a bit low. I currently have the myTouch 4G Slide and I don't want another phone with a low ringer.

The ringing volume is rather low. If it's in ur shirt pocket, u can hear it at full volume, but might miss in a crowded place. If it's in ur trouser pocket, u will almost always miss unless u keep the vibration on.
In my opinion, the ringer volume is fine if you select a more piercing ringing tone. In call volume is a different story. It is pretty low.
Sent from my C5503 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for the feedback, guys!
The ringing volume is decent for most of the high end phones in the market.
You might only miss it if you put in your jean's pocket in a crowded noisy place.
If you find your speaker too quiet, try to enable xLoud and ClearPhase in the sound settings, it helps a lot on my ZR. Actually it's pretty loud when I'm using these settings.
I think the call volume and ringing volume are acceptable.
For ringing tone use "Beat Plucker" DR.MAD, its pretty loud.
For call volume i read somewhere that disabling the "Speaker voice enhancement" in Call Settings helps. I have it off and call volume is good.:good:
