Can anyone confirm that I am correct in assuming that the 256k user rom is available to load extra programs and games into without slowing the performance of the device or is it better to load these extra programs onto the SD card.
Thanks
i keeping all stuff except system apps and plugins on memory card, but i think it does not have effect if you load it to device memory.
more needed is system memory and need to keep is as big as possible
Hi,
Device comes with 256Mb rom, but by default, only 130Mb+ is left for user, since the rest are utilized for the core files & OS. If you use the cooked images, u may get around 150+Mb..
Personally, I installed commonly used programs(PocketBreeze/Pocket Informant/etc) into the rom and seldom used/memory consuming programs(Navigator Programs/Games) onto my SD.. In case I need to extract out my SD, my core programs still run..
Just my 3 cents worth.
I don't think anyone has run speed tests yet, but in theory, both the storage ROM and MicroSD slot use Flash, so whichever one uses faster flash will be the best place to put programs. Since most MicroSD cards at this point are pretty slow (especially the larger ones, class 4 and 6), I would guess the Storage ROM MIGHT be slightly faster. If you can find/write a benchmarking program, you could find out for sure.
As long as you don't plan on taking the card out very often, its fine to install applications there, they run just fine.
I personally wouldnt put anything which the device uses constantly (such as today plug ins etc) on the storage card.
I would put things like sat nav on there.

But newer microSD 4Gb, 6Gb and 8Gb Class 2 & Class 4 are quicker than 2Gb and 1Gb. I have a 2Gb fast microSD for my Hermes, and my new Sandisk 6Gb is more than 4x faster than the older 2Gb.
But you're right, the internal memory is much quick that any microSD and sould be used to install programs more used.
Cheers.
I am currently loading ALL my apps on the main memory now, and only games on the sd card. With the 8525 and the stock at&t rom, I only had 30-35mb to start with. With the Tilt, I start with 115mb with the at&t rom (minus bloatware). I am using programs now I couldn't before, like Voice Command. I still have 75mb left over. That's more than twice what I had on the 8525 to start with. For me I don't see any reason to load to the SD card anymore, except maybe games
Side note: I've noticed some programs would corrupt the data on the SD card when loaded there. Like MS Pocket Streets was one. Spb Backup was another. But yours may vary.
Thanks for the replies, looks like the internal memory is the best option for most programs.
i have qtek 2020i,and i want to add a memory card of 512mb, but its not showing up, i dont know why, and the other weird thing is without memory card in the memory menu it shows a storage card of 59.68mb
but i dont have any card in the the card slot, which is at the top of the phone if i'm not wrong lol kindly help me out with this, and my card is working fine on my laptop, i format it as both fat and fat32 but nothin works on my qtek2020i.
and also the rom update link is not working for me, the folder is empty
ftp://xda:[email protected]_v1.11.162_Radio_1.04_Camera_Fixed.rar
Ok the 59.68Mb storage that shows up is an Internal storage, so that's normal, the problem with the SD card may be due to it being SDHC rather than standard SD, which the Alpine cannot read. I have tried many memory cards types in my XDAIIi and have never had an SDHC one work, I know that there are also issues with using microSD cards with adaptors.
The non-availability of ROM images is due to a certain huge software company asking for them to be removed, regardless of the enormous benefits to that companies users in having access to such a useful resource.
(however the careful use of google may help, especially if you are looking for a specific filename, since some of the images you are looking for are stored on various other sites....... Alpine_Ext-1.11.162_Radio-1.04_O2stuffstripped_Camera_Fixed.rar springs to mind ...... Seek and ye shall find...... oh and cut and paste shall set you free ).
What confused me is as following:
In the setting\system\device information\hardware tab(tranlated from chinese), it show up the RAM size is 256MB and the Flash ROM size is 512MB, and the storage memory is 279.09MB.
in the setting\system\memory\main memory tab, it show up there are 279.09MB storage memory(ROM) totally and 183.60 MB program memory(RAM) totally.
Why this will happened? The ROM of the Rhodium consume 232.91MB Flash ROM(512-279.09=232.91)? Is it so big? And how about the RAM?
Is there any chance for me to upgrade the ROM and RAM to bigger size in some kind of phone repair shop?

as long as the phone does not run out of memory everything is fine. so why you want to have more ram?

I like to put everything into the phone bringing with me everywhere, including all kind of software and all kind of materials, photo, music, e-book, home video etc.
if the ROM and RAM are not big enough, I will always be worried about them when install software or copy materials. Even it still does not run out off memory, but I do worry about it all the time.
although it can be expanded by TF card, however, many software can't run on TF card and the read/write speed of the TF card is slower than the main memory.
If the main memory is big enough, I can install all of the software into main memory and copy all of the materials into TF card. At that condition, I can easily change TF card to get anymore new contents.
My last device is O2 flame, I do feel comfortable with its big Flash ROM but its RAM still too small and also many other shortcoming.
I ever think of N97 for the built in 32G memory, however, I am used to WM system.
I ever think of samsung i908 for the built in 8G memory, however there is several week points in its specification.
I do not understand why HTC build in so small memory in such a highend model while its competitor, such as Apple,Nokia,Sumsung, are goint toward another way.
get a 8GB memory card, should be enough, and install everything in your memory card. That's what I do, and everything is fine.
Be sure, tho, to install important programs, like drivers, softwares like skins, etc to your device, since the memory card initializes late on boot.
All in all, you should not have any problems even tough the rom is huge. mine is still fast and fancy since day 1, and I have my 8GB nearly full of s***.

I got a 8GB TF card too and it's now in my device.
However, I have to install some software into the card. Then when I change another card for multi-media contents, those software become unuseable. This is not comfortable for using experience.
What I can't understand is why not built in more memory for user's convenience since it's known the ROM and OS occupied so much memory.

perhaps you could have the programs installed into the same directory on different SD cards so when swapping them for Media purposes you do not break the program.
just a thought, never tried it. i can fit everything i want on a 16GB card..
OK, I'm out of space on my 820 because "Other" is taking up over 3GB of space and WP8 refuses to touch my 64GB microSD card.
I went through uninstalling nearly all of my apps last night, cleared maps, cleared IE history/temp data, removed facebook/twitter from accounts, and Other only shrunk down to 2.5GB.
Obviously I re-added those things and am back up to 3.0GB. This phone has 8GB of internal storage. Nearly half of the only storage WP8 can use is taken up by some "mystery data", and there's a thread on WPCentral where someone claims to have uninstalled/cleared everything and still has 4GB or so of data sitting in Other.
Anyone here have insight?
Other is the OS and its files. It needs to be stored and loaded from somewhere.
Sure, they could have a second area of flash just for that, but then it would sit there with unused space the user couldn't use as the flash would always be much bigger than the OS to allow for expansion.
Someone mentioned to plug the SD card into the phone while it is plugged into the PC via USB cable.
No, there is already an indicator for system files and it sits around 1.7GB.
Others have reported up to 8GB of usage taken up by "Other", and nothing short of hard resetting seems to clear it. The size is expanding, but it doesn't seem to correlate to any particular addition (IE history, cache, maps, etc). Unless you're suggesting wp8 just increases in size for no reason, this isn't the system.

I didn't think wp8 supported more than 32gb cards. I have a problem with that other folder too. The thing that bothers me is the fact that this is my most advanced device I've ever owned, yet I reached the phone storage limit, which was not ever a problem with windows mobile. With wm, I could just install aps right on the SD. This would solve the problem for us. Even my hd2 (with android dual boot, then wp7.8) has way more apps and games and never saw this problem.

I think WP8 itself supports any size card- it IS using the desktop kernel after all.
Varying phones have different hardware support though. The WP8 Lumia line supports up to 64GB I think. I have about 40GB of music on my 64GB SD card and it's working well in WP8.

cool, I didn't know. I'm using a 16 GB class 6. Works great. I have full phone storage, mostly empty card. Hopefully we will get the option to install on SD. I would rather it be official, but xda is good for this sort of problem.
Has anyone tried the 'adaptable' storage hack on the Note 8 yet?
Worked on my S7.
I have the same question
I was thinking about doing this but from what I hear it's more trouble than it's worth but if anyone whose done it would like to chime in I'm sure we'd all greatly appreciate it.

I feel the same way. More trouble than its worth. The 64GB is plenty for all your apps and for everything else you have your fat Micro SD card.
I can't find half a reason to bother with it. 1. Many apps, especially larger one will use SD card for storage, if not you can set it to do so in settings. 2. SD card is slower than internal memory, so frequently used programs shouldn't be there 3. It creates whole lot of problems if SD card goes bad and yes, had this happen to me multiple times on Sandisk included. 4. it can get complicated when you swap the cards between phones, computers etc and you use the phone without dedicated SD card inside 5. If you really think 64GB internal storage doesn't do it, hunt for elusive 128 and 256 GB versions. They should show up somewhere.
The only a reason to do it I can think off: "because I can?"
I wouldn't do it unless the UFS ever comes out. Supposed to be a lot faster external storage.

If anybody does want to enable adoptable storage on the Note8 despite the potential issues, try ashyx's patch here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/patch-adoptable-storage-enabler-t3460478
Note:
- You will need TWRP installed.
- It might not work for you. I've only tested it with Renovate.
- You will need to use adb to set up your sd card.
You won't do it on an unrooted phone. Samsung never implemented it.
The phone's built in memory is far faster than any SD card at this point. You'd be slowing your phone down... and not by just a little bit.
I beg to differ
Agree the phones internal memory is tops right now.
Disagree the phone will be slow if you offload storage.
Source: i have virtually every app i use daily (Save a couple) moved to SD card and ive noticed NO.. I repeat NO.. noticeable difference in speed or issue by moving these apps. And im talking about WhatsApp, textra, several video playing apps, Instagram, Snapchat, outlook mobile, and some other apps.
There is SOME residual data from these apps that LIVE on the internal storage—perhaps this left over data keeps the app from bottlenecking from the SD card. This is speculation though.
