Creative vs. customers - Off-topic

http://forums.creative.com/creative...hread.id=116332&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
So, I guess HTC is not the only one. Look at what Creative did when somebody fixed missing/incomplete drivers.
Looks like it is normal now to treat customers this way - first promise a lot and then deliver nothing.

it seems a lot of companies are faling short in terms of vista, especially in 64 bit and it gives vista a bad reputation. i have a turtle beach montego 7.1 sound card with optical out i can't use because i'm on 64 bit and they REFUSE to produce drivers. back to groovy onboard sound i go....

But there are unofficial drivers. Vista has nothing to do with that. Creative is just refusing to release proper official one. Just like HTC refuses to make any sort of performance fix for MSM7200.

creative always made pretty bad drivers so i dont think it's a matter of them refusing to make one just that they need more practice

iPhone forum as good as XDA?

Is there in existence, an iPhone forum with as much tech knowledge as this forum?
I got a couple of iPhones to play with, a good one and a fixer-upper.
Whenever I have technical questions about the iPhone and search Google for answers, I keep coming upon forums full of questions (the same ones I would have asked) but no answers. Another problem is most forums are Mac-oriented and I only have PCs.
Lol, too many avg. joe's and computer illiterate people use the iphone, hence the forum's full of questions. As an example, one iphone user i know was super excited and happy that his iphone used web apps and described them as the way of the future, I have no idea how they are advantageous esp when many require an active internet connection and when I mentioned the inability to use our field, healthcare's, current WinMo work/productivity apps, he replied "yea, apple needs to fix that!"...lol, they are so cluseless.
Maybe you could try your luck at searching for a developer forum...well a hacker's/unlocking forum?
I haven't found any good technical forums yet, but so far I would have to say the iPhone isn't that much fun.
Lots of eye candy, animations are super smooth, and the browser is first rate, but there's not a whole lot to do on it. Even the programs available via Installer.app are pretty lame. Can't access the filesystem, everything must be copied via iTunes. You can install OpenSSH and get to the file system that way, but you can't directly copy media to it. It all has to go through iTunes.
The whole time I was thinking... 8GB, 480x320 LCD, 620MHz Samsung ARM processor. Damn I wish this thing could run WM6!
Plus, Bubble Breaker is a helluva lot better than any of the lame games I was able to find for it.
I'll give it a few more days, but I think Windows phones are more my thing.
I've come to the same conclusion!

I've not got an iPhone but like GnatGoSplat, I'd love to have the 'power' and screen size - other stuff like automatic screen rotation and multi-touch would be good as well! I have come to the conclusion that although Apple have done a great job in fueling the revolution in phone UI and function, it's aimed at the non-technical masses or neither have the wit or foresight to realize what could be done if only Apple would let them do it!
I have strayed a little from the point that I originally wanted to make though - 8GB, 480x320 LCD, 620MHz Samsung ARM processor - check the specs for the Meizu M8 Minione and Samsung i900 that are due to be released later this year? Due to similarities to the iPhone, i doubt the M8 will be available in Europe and North America because of copyright infringement, however the i900; well that looks like a whole load of fun that many of us are looking for!

I've known about the M8 for over a year, but it seems like it's vaporware and never coming out. The Samsung i900 looks nice, but screen is lower res. Not sure on the CPU specs, but I'm guessing it will be slower. I love that it has GPS and FM radio though.
Ideally, I would still like to see a Windows Mobile emulator because I'd still want to be able to use the iPhone's apps, many of which are far superior to their WinMo equivalents (Safari for one). Surely I'm not the only one who wants to run WM6 on a HVGA, 11.6mm, 620MHz device! I would be the best of both worlds. Surely I can't be the only one who wants this?

Official Windows Mobile 6.6 in February 2010

Hi Folks,
just want to inform you about a news over at digitimes saying there will be an official Windows Mobile 6.6 next month. Maybe WM7 is delayed til 2011 due to that development.
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20100114PD216.html
same news on German news page:
http://winfuture.de/news,52805.html
The screenshots on the german page makes me think that WM6.6 is what the XDA community is used to called "6.5.3" (28xxx development path).
A big Thanks to the Chefs for the continuing great work!
Future
I cannot belive Microsoft with all its resources cannot launch a proper mobile system. If it weren't for the cooks on this forum we'd be stuck with 'ol boring platform. This wait for WinMo 7 is turning into 'Waiting fof Godot' - and if (and when) it finally arrives it may turn out to be a dud.
It's such a shame to have a device like HD2 with all its technical advances and no platform to properly display all its goodies.

we should all knew Microsoft is like this..
it looks like its a slightly modified 28014, there are already lots of very good ROMS with this path so we dont really have anything to get excited about i am afraid .
I'm using GRID EVO 1.8 which is very good indeed. Incidentally, I wouldnt get too excited about windows 7 either, we may find this destroys are lowly 528 cpu, we'll probably have to wait for it to be cooked into somethign useable.
Do not have big changes.....just improvement of 6.5
Anybody has idea about which com branch is going to be WM6.6?
Mobile Office 2010 came out of beta in 23518 build. So 235xx is going to be WM6.6?
so this means that new roms will be avaliable with wm6.6? and going to be slightly faster?
Keyboard is nice otherwise I don't see anything that deserving to call it 6.6 just random updates.
I think this is to be expected, really. After playing around iphone and android, you can see every part of the system is designed very well (core, system, interface, flexibility, compatibility). I read some rumors that Microsoft have to go back to the drawing board a bit in order to make wm 7 competitive. And if they can keep improving wm 6.5 or 6.6 to be as close in performance as other systems. They can take their sweet time with wm 7, and it's probably a good thing going into 2012 and onwards.
right well hopefully it runs just as good as 6.5 or better wait for windows 7 that's gonna be something completly different.
Unbelievable... This waiting for the Windows Mobile 7 is becoming a big pain... If we didn't have chefs here at the XDA, we would be still stuck with the old platforms.
I believe that Windows 6.6 is just a slight improvement from the 6.5, but we should be happy that Windows Mobile is improving step by step... I think that in this one we have a slightly faster speed and colored "checking the boxes"...

Well, after the Blackstone I don't think I will buy another Windows Mobile until I see what Microsoft does with it. Everything about the iPhone just shines quality and efficiency for example, compared to ours - that's not harsh. It's just a bodge in comparison. Also given that they left us with 6.1, I would have gone mad without the chefs.
My contract runs out in June...
According to Danish PC-Mag "PC World" Windows Mobile 7 will be unveiled next month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Hope you guys can wait that long.
Regards
just to clarify, these are still rumours.
wm6.6 is what we have previously been calling 6.5.3

oh come on thats a bit harse, whats on the iphone is very fancy the problem is there isnt a lot on it. Look, Apple from day one have had a luxury of having an OS running on spacific hardware designed to work with it, Windows mobile has essentially run on just about every configuration of hardware in the mobile market you can think of, its the same debate as the desktop market.
two different markets two different designs both very good at what they do, having a windows mobile platform running and looking like an apple is a bit too much like having your cake and eating it and expecting someone else to clean up your mess, what is unexceptable is having hardware that isnt working fully because the chipset makers wont give us the drivers (or HTC wont pay for them) thats not MS fault, MS didnt leave Touch HD users with 6.1 HTC and the networks did.
WinMo is 10 years old and showing its age... it simply can't compete any more.
The only think that keeps most users using it is not the OS itself, but some of the apps for it (Tom Tom, iGO, etc)
Clearly MS have always struggled to accept fundamentals are wrong... they like to have incremental improvements, but really don't like accepting they might have fundamental flaws.
The funtionality of WinMo is actually very good, but the UI has barely changed in the last 10 years... even less so in the last 7... very very poor. Their attempt at 'themes' was pitiful when they came out, let alone now.
MS see it as brand dilution... having someone create a new UI. Sadly, they fail to accept that if they created a high class UI, folks would be less likely to turn to SPB, or HTC to give their phone an (artificial) makeover.
I will stick with WinMo for a while though, but Android is becoming more tempting. Symbian's dead (even though it's 70% market share for open OS devices). iPhone has all the RIGHT attributes for speed and polish, but the real functionality just isn't there.
6.6...Don;t make me laugh. It's just another excuse for MS to delay WM7.
A comparison with the iphone is not fair in terms of dedicated hardware, but it is fair in terms of user experience.
The iphone just works, it's fluid, people who didn;t want or need a smartphone are jumping up and down for an iphone, sales don;t lie.
What MS is doing with WM7 has to be somthing very special indeed to get me to stick with WM and releasing a point upgrade which will change very very little from what we have access to here, is not going to cut the mustard with die hard WM fans.
WM7 has to be nothing short of groundbreaking otherwsie Smartphone manufaturers will just choose, the by then very mature and Free Android.

[Q] Would you still buy an Android phone?

Because I am quite disappointed with Samsung Galaxy S, I will sell it and buy another phone soon.
I am very fond of HTC Desire HD but is it worth to buy another Android phone or is better to give a try to iOS, Symbian ^3 or maybe Windows Mobile 7.
What are your suggestions?
From personal experience, I doubt the iOS beats android in any way. Symbian is too simple and plain for my taste. However, I don't know much about the latest symbian, but the N8 works on a much slower CPU than the SGS. As for windows mobile 7, since it's new, it might be worth a try but we can never really know till reviews start flooding the net... Personally, I think you're being a bit hasty with throwing away the SGS. With froyo just around the corner, it would really improve the phone overall, and would certainly be comparable with the Desire HD. After having done my own research, I concluded and opted for an android phone by choice, for IMHO it IS currently the best upcoming mobile phone OS. Ultimately, you just have to be patient with new technology, so irrespective of the OS or the manufacturer, there's really no point rushing. You will NEVER find 'The Perfect Phone'.... Just my two cents.
Hold out for Meego if Symbian ends up on top of your list, but that'll be 2011. If you want something with everything laid out for you and a good app store, iOS is a fine option, but it definitely depends on what your problem is with SGS and how much of that is Android/Samsung based. iOS has high satisfaction rates, but most people who get in there have stuck along, knew what they were getting into or don't know any better. Android, some people who aren't technical enough or like tinkering and having options just bought in because it's popular and they hear enough about it, but they didn't know what they were getting into. Still, as far as I know, Android has the second highest customer satisfaction, so if you need a decision for the here and now, go with Android or iOS. If you can wait until WP7, read up after the devices launch, it's not ready to compete with all things either platform can offer, but it does have long-term potential, particularly with gaming/MS integrations, but thus far from what I know I wouldn't buy it in the first 12 months of it's launch even if they start with the best hardware.
My advice is wait until Froyo.. The reason why you are disappointed is probably because it feels sometimes like Samsung aren't doing anything. This is because there aren't many leaks.
You may also be disappointed because many people here at XDA are jumping to incredibly uninformed conclusions. We have morons running around saying that Samsung will never release updates, people saying the lag can't be fixed in RFS (whilst Samsung might not have integrated a few performance patches) and newbies saying "the GPS problem is hardware" without ANY proof whatsobloodyever.
Also, whilst those who defend this phone regularly get called fanboy's, there are certainly a lot of HTC fanboys here too (which seems to be finally getting revealed now that many ex-HTC users are calling some of their ex-products worse).
Froyo might be a completely different ballgame (I wouldn't underestimate Samsung). But either way, a lot of people coming from other platforms are saying their SGS is better than their other phones anyway.
I wouldn't touch WM7 because:
1) Windows Mobile seems to be a dying platform. Unfortunately, Microsoft took too long to release it.
2) So this means they wont get many developers and users on-board.
3) Windows Mobile is closed source, and development isn't easy (You probably require Windows).
Why I wouldn't touch the iPhone:
1) For starters, Steve Jobs stood on stage and lied about the antenna. Rather than fix the problem, he called other mobiles rubbish (despite their antenna problems often being VERY difficult to replicate in real life). I have very little respect for that.
2) Development is difficult, you really need OSX. The OS is closed source too.
3) Many users NEED to jailbreak, because of restrictions in the store.
4) Apple products often have weird design issues, which people seem to ignore, but which exists.
5) Huge app store
6) iTunes.. Enough said..
Symbian
1) Symbian is open source, which is great...
2) But these days, only Nokia sells them. Symbian's marketshare will likely only decrease.
WebOS/Palm
1) Forget about WebOS. In most countries you can't find ANY webOS phones, so audience is VERY limited
Meego/Maemo
1) The Nokia N900 is the only phone that uses it.
2) But it probably runs faster than Android because it's compiled code.
3) But limited exposure. I'd consider it, if the hardware wasn't so sucky...
Android.
1) Apps might run slower, because it's bytecode
2) But, HUGE range of mobiles
3) Huge range of apps (Not as much as iPhone though)
4) Open source OS.
5) Evolving quickly, reliable vendor (Google know what they are doing)
6) The SGS seems to be the only laggy Android phone out there (probably due to a few bugs that need fixing in RFS, which might already be fixed in head/trunk).
I'd say hold off until Froyo. I have the feeling Samsung will surprise us. Remember, the leaks only show SOME integrated code, and even JPK could have been missing a whole lot of patches. A lot of claims made by users isn't true either.
The reason why some things haven't been fixed yet may also be because they are integrating the fixes directly into Froyo.
There is a VERY good reason why Android is quickly growing though. In fact, I'd be surprised if Android isn't #1 by next year. But I'd honestly have no problems buying another Android handset

Returned mine today.

Well after having my HD7 since launch I returned it today and went back to my HD2 running Android.
The last straw for me was using Youtube and seeing the lousy video playback..in a centered screen. WTF is that? Totally unacceptable in my book.
While I like the look of the UI, theres just something about it that got tiresome.
Real Cons for me were.
I really dislike IE.
Youtube.
Battery life.
No LED notifications.
Amount of animations to get something done.
No Google Maps.
Homescreen tiles. While pretty, because most tiles are the same color I found it confusing to quickly choose what I wanted.
Camera was a toss up. Some photos were great, some not.
I never got around to playing games on it because battery life was so bad.
Anyway you get the idea. I gave it a shot and I will be keeping an eye on it.
I hope it works out for all you others.
Good for you. I don't think you are set to be an early adopter anyway.
This OS is still in its infancy. So, I would say you guys should hold off on getting the WP7 until the next version.
I, for one LOVE this OS and I do not have any issues for the functions that I use this phone on a daily basis... Phone Call, Internet, Mails, Movies and Music. No issues what so every. I also use the camera, and if at all, thats the only only issue I have compared to the HD2. I think the camera should be improved a bit more.
Agreed
I do have to agree that the OS is still new and has some bugs to be worked out, but over all I really enjoy the HD7 and WP7. The OS is simple and for myself was ready for something a little simpler them the current OS systems out there. I have found it in some ways to be a blending of the Android and IPhone, but still remaining Windows. The camera is a little difficult and touchy to get good pics, but hey it's a phone.
I think in the months to come we will see updates from MS and they will adress some of the small issues. MS has invested alot money into the development of WP7, and feel and hope that MS will really put the resources needed to futher develope the firmware/software.
Sorry to hear that but hey it wasn't meant to be a fully loved OS by everybody.
Btw what are you going back to ? (or forward)
Personally, I am very satisfied with the OS so far and I am in a long run with Microsoft on this one. If other OSs aren't catching up in terms of speed (besides functionality) I doubt I will break away from WP7 any time soon. Me being more the music/browsing/e-mail type of guy it does perfectly what others haven't been able to reach yet.
i have to agree on some points. I do like the fact it's "speedy" but really dislike about camera (but that is not a OS issues but HTC's, i believe). considering the platform being only a few weeks (almost a month) old, it's got good start. Just as Nokia N900 when it first came out, there were issues. they will be address as time pass by. Microsoft just need a bit of support from all of us to really expand their market.
I think having Apple, Google and Microsoft in the mix will keep different inovation to come into the market.
i'm sorry for your experience but i guess no single solution will make everyone happy.

would be interested to know what Android web browser has that WP7 IE does not?
speed is the same, rendering is the same, Android has a tendency to "block render" a bit more than IE on slow sites, overall same experience between the two.
Also, Youtube is an application for WP7, it is not part of WP7 so judging the OS based on a crappy app is not a fair evaluation of its capabilities.
I am usually streaming youtube vids from home while connected to my WIFI and quality is pretty decent, got a bit worse over slow 3G but don't see how it could better with Android.
guys its personal preference and if some one likes to RUN android on a machine which is not made for it.. i will rest my case....
why do u want to run android on a WM device when there are so many android device in the market...
all the best to u my friend.... and the only valid reason u had was the youtube app... which ic not even WP7 app... any way all the best..
I've considered returning my HD7 many times. What's really keeping me from returning my phone is the potential. The UI on WP7 is beautiful. If you guys try the Flux and the IMdB apps, you'll know what I mean.
I'm keeping mine. I actually love it. I had a first gen iPhone and loved it. This HD7 and WP7 is every bit as good as that iPhone and is better in numerous ways. To me, it feels like a luxurious high-end Lexus or Infiniti. I find it to be the absolute best phone ever created. Just purely gorgeous from every aspect, externally and internally. WP7 is a sweet piece of kit.
Too bad you are giving up on it. The next update will likely solve your concerns. I knew what would be *initially* lacking in WP7 and still find it pure bliss.

+1. I'm willing to do without a few features for another month or so till the update, because this phone is fantastic. Once the updates starts taking care of more and more issues being one of the first WP7 (specifically HD7) owners will be so worth it.
I been from Nokia apple android and now the Hd7
So yeah I have had all of them Each has the goodies and the baddies
although I am more inclined towards android.. ( hope nokia ditches symbian and goes with their meego which is also linux based like android.. or just go with android )
WM7 and HD 7 is the lovable although i do agree they they to update the OS which I am hoping will be next year
Must admit thought that Microsoft has taken the best of both android and apple with WM7 so fingers crossed that the updates will sort us out

I agree with you on many, but not all.
I took some pictures last night, and I have to say the button to use ( like a camera ) is the most annoying thing ever, the HD2 / I phone and I think many phone on screen touch button was the best, you tap it, it auto focuses and walla good pics, I took 15 pictures last night in a low light condition with flash, not one is clear, every pic came out blurry, then I realized its because i move the phone a tiny bit when attempting to press the worst button created for taking pictures.
I still have 10 days left before I can return mine, going to contemplate.

My thoughts exactly. I knew what I was getting, and what I wasn't, and I love it!
I find it a bit strange as well to go back to Android on the HDS - why not the Desire HD - same phone but actually made for Android?!
I love the new Windows Phone 7 OS, but the HTC HD7 really is a piece of s**t. Ive got to send mine away for repair already due to the power button getting stuck in, not exactly what you'd call a high end quality product. Ive had plenty of HTC phones, since the days of the XDA 1, and to be honest they have all been utter s***e. Im definately never going to buy another HTC product, I suppose thats what you get for buyin stuff that comes from China.

Most phones and most electronics come from China. The iPhone, designed and developed in the USA, is made in China. Most Sony phones...Japanese phones...are made in China. Pretty much any electronic equipment you own is likely made in China. HTC is a Taiwan company and is the major producer of nearly all the major phones from most companies. They made all the Palm devices prior to the Pre and Pixi...not sure who makes the Pre and Pixi now. Apple has always used Foxconn ...a Chinese company... for production of the iPhone and most, if not all, of their other products. MS used a Chinese producer for the Zunes. HTC is a similar producer. They are contracted by a number of electronics makers to produce their products. The HTC quality has always been quite good. But, until recently, that quality has nose dived a bit...for whatever reason.
My HTC HD7 is an outstanding phone. The quality is exemplary. But it took 3 other, defective, HD7s to get the good one. I feel my HD7 is like a high-class, high-end automobile in look, feel and construction.
Hi guys,
Using my HD7 for the last 5 days and until now everything runs fine
In my opinion this is an outstanding phone. Excellent quality and the new SO is very good for my use (professional and personal)
Of course some things must be corrected by MS, let's wait for the updates that all people are waiting

Any Laptop

Alright guys. I'm getting a new laptop for school next year, and I can get basically anything that I want. I don't really want a Mac, because quite honestly, I'd end up installing Windows on it and never using the iOS. So, what computer would you choose (laptop, anyone you want!). I've been looking at The Lenovo IdeaPad Y540 with the RapidDrive. Any suggestions?

Alright guys. I'm getting a new laptop for school next year, and I can get basically anything that I want. I don't really want a Mac, because quite honestly, I'd end up installing Windows on it and never using the iOS. So, what computer would you choose (laptop, anyone you want!). I've been looking at The Lenovo IdeaPad Y540 with the RapidDrive. Any suggestions?

Go to the dell website and customize a laptop to whatever you want, you know, choose your own: processor, ram, hardrive space, graphics card etc.
I customized an inspiron 1525 a whil back and its running nicely
how about the best of both worlds , getting a macbook to show around and get the honeys in school , and having it dual boot windows at home to get some work done (when nobody sees you , ofc)
I use Lenovo Thinkpads normally. They are awesome. I really like their customer service. It's really IBM, but they are very patient and knowledgeable.
Well, you'd never use iOS on a Mac anyways, since iOS doesn't run on Macs (except in the emulator as part of the iOS SDK).
It is all about what you need. I'd get a Dell and run Ubuntu on it if I wasn't relying on certain Mac OS X software. Oh wait, I have a Dell running Ubuntu that I use a lot, in addition to my MacBook Pro.
The problem is you don't specify your needs at all, there is no best computer. I love my MacBook Pro and I love my Dell. And I'd happily recommend either of them to you, or several other machines - depending on your needs. So, what do you need?
I'd advise against getting a Dell Inspiron. There's a design flaw in the hinge where the case starts to spread apart; my girlfriend, mother, and roommate all have the problem and it started just after a year of owning their laptops. If you're already looking at Lenovo and you really can "get pretty much whatever you want" I'd suggest looking at a ThinkPad, the build quality is much better than the IdeaPads.
What are you exactly planning to do with the laptop?
You might need extra graphics muscle for vid editing our gaming.
Go for something with a sandy bridge. I'll be somewhat futureproof.

Seconded.
Or you can just boot Windows and say;
"I REALLY love the hardware, but Mac is sooooo last picosecond ago."
Otherwise, go for an ultraportable.

Have you ever actually USED OS X? Like I said, a computer is a tool. OS X provides the core foundation to do things Windows users can only dream of. Want me to blow your mind? I can show you videowall and blended projector setups running all in software (plus some Matrox TripleHead2Go's) doing things that required thousands of dollars worth of video processing hardware five years ago.
Granted, that's a rare application, but the same benefits apply to lower-level programs too. Mac OS has had true, full system-wide color management since the first OS X release. Windows? Their new, much-touted color management is about on the same level as Mac OS 9 was - 11 years ago.
Apple has done a great job providing creative professionals with an amazing platform. Sadly, it seems like they're abandoning us in favor of the content consumers and iOS. We shall see. But for right now, it's the best thing out there for the needs of many creative professionals.

Have you ever actually USED Windows 7? Like I said, a computer is a tool. Windows 7 provides the core foundation to do things Mac users can only dream of. Want me to blow your mind? I can show you 16xAA and 4xAF graphics on SIX monitors (plus some sick DirectX 11 tessellation) doing things that required thousands of dollars worth of Mac hardware five months ago.
Granted, that's a common application, but the same benefits apply to lower-level programs too. Windows 7 has true 3d games since its release. Mac? Their new, much-touted app store is probably 4 to 5 years behind.
Microsoft/AMD/ATI/NVidia/Intel has done a great job providing gamers with an amazing platform. Sadly, it seems like they're abandoning us in favor of the content consumers and consoles. We shall see. But for right now, it's the best thing out there for the needs of many gamers.
FTFY.
Um, not sure if it was your intent, but you only proved my point. Different uses need different tools. We've got Windows 7 sitting and running up at the church on two machines that have replaced our sound boards (both front of house and monitor mix) and much of our effects and processing gear. Software Audio Console by RML Labs. Great product, and runs fantastically well on Windows 7. The developer is a bit of a nut, and he himself is always complaining about what Microsoft does poorly in Windows (especially in regards to memory management, which he notes is tuned more towards most processing power, not lowest latency like one desires in a live audio application). Regardless, he's managed to get Windows down to a few milliseconds of latency, and he has the whole setup working very, very well.
So, you proved my point. Windows 7 is a great gaming OS. I never said it wasn't There's a lot more to this world than games, but if games are what you want, the Windows 7 is where it's at - though OS X is catching up. It's definitely had "true 3D" since release. Right now the two big issues are drivers that aren't really tweak-able - and tuned more towards rendering accuracy than performance; and the actual support of developers (though both have improved a lot in the last year).

I'm just trying to say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Whatever platform that you use, as long as you are happy with it. I will not begrudge you if you decide to buy a Mac for legitimate reasons (graphics editing, etc.), but a Windows PC for me is a much better deal. Maybe its because I've grown up around Windows, so I'll never get the "need" for an overpriced and underspec'd computer.
And, yes, my PC is kinda heavily modified
Glad we could find a middle ground
Get a Macbook Pro, At least you wouldn't be getting those annoying updates and useless Norton Anti-virus notification. I been a pc user for more than 10 years and Os X is really not bad like people make it out to be.

I think if you'd shop it, you'd find Macs aren't bad for what you're getting, price wise. There are things that have value people don't mention. Things like the glass screen on laptops (hard to damage and easy to clean - sadly, also REALLY bad glare) and the large full-multitouch glass trackpad... it's a joy to use, easy and fast.
As for the desktops, Mac Pros are crazy pricey at first glance. But when you look closer, they're using server (Xeon) processors and server-grade components. Which makes almost no difference in performance, but it does legitimately add a fortune to the cost. Apple needs a true desktop machine. But if you compare it to other machines using the same components, pricing is similar or better.
The big thing is that Apple has no low-end, cheap-built, high-performance machines. Their machines are all made THEIR WAY. No choices. 1984 style, even. I do not like that, but when looked at in the broader market, it's not so bad - Macs are one of many choices to find the best tool for each job. Windows is also one of many choices. I spend much of my time on a Dell in Linux
BTW, I wasn't even talking graphics editing. Though the color management engine makes Macs great for that. Next time you go to a concert and see walls of video screens behind the stage and stuff like that, and you assume there's a ton of fancy video gear, there might not be. The software exists, on Mac OS X, to do that all in software today. And the software exists, on Windows, to mix sound all in software, today. And the results, in both cases, are as good as traditional hardware solutions.
Sorry I have't posted back guys. But I ended up ordering:
Toshiba Portege r700
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
Intel i7 @ 2.67 GHz
4 GB DDR2
120 GB SSD
Fingerprint Scanner
HDMI Out
13.3 inch widescreen
The SSD and DDR2 was important to me since I will be a computer engineering student. I love it. Fast, extremely thin (for all the guts) and just as light as my girlfriends MB Air.
Thanks for your help.
Sent from my DROIDX
Sounds like a nice machine, but I question why you wanted DDR2, and not DDR3. I'm just a noob though.
ASUS G51J works GREAT for gaming and school
