I'm thinking of getting a S11HT (it's a Japaneses Kaiser) to double as my UMPC's modem I have a USB one at the moment..
Can anyone tell me how well does it works ?
At the moment with a USB H220 I get 900kbs down 350Kbs down
Rob
On AT&T here in Chicago I have run tests with the device tethered over BT PAN and have gotten equivalent speeds to what you posted.
I would say the average was around 750 down and 300 up, but I definitely had tests which reached (or exceeded) your speeds. Plus they were all done from a room where I get bad reception.
Yeah, I am also in chicago and I consistently get 1200+ for my downloads, I don't pay as close of attention to my upload but around 300 sounds right. I switch between USB ethered and bluetooth.
jallenclark,
Where in Chicago are you and are you on AT&T?
What is your radio version and how are you testing your speed?
The highest I ever got on my d/l was about 950, but like I said it could very well be the room I was in gets so-so reception.
Thanks guys..
One of the reasons I got a usb modem was that I was using EM One (WM5) device as the USB connecting modem and the max i got out of that was 128Kbs
So I was worried that the Kaiser was the same..

Does anyone know if it's possible to strengthen the IrDA port on the Trinity?
It's reduced my range from a good 10 feet to a mere 3-6 feet when using Novii remote control software...
I was wondering if the IrDA strength is something that can be adjusted.
Thanks for your time.
I see no-one else cares for using their device as a universal remote control...
Why would they? It's not like that ultra-cool WAWA utility is of any use, what with the wake yourself up using the TV option.

Hey!
What do you mean by 'it's reduced my range' ? Did it use to have a 10 feet range before?
You may find the following advice helpful:
You may try a remote extender like

I bought it a year ago. Its cost was $50. It worked!

Sorry, I should have specified that my last phone was the HTC Wizard. So, going from Wizard to Trinity, I lose several feet in range.
Thanks for the link, but I'm afraid an external device would defeat the purpose for me as I'd like to have everything in one device.
I sure hope the Kaiser or whatever's going to succeed the Trinity has a better infrared range.
Edit: Oh, great! It seems the Kaiser doesn't have IrDA, period. HTC: .|.
IR woes
Hey,
I been playing round with my HTC Trinity trying out some remote softwares.
Promixis Netremote www.promixis.com doesnt work at with the IRDA, I assume it will work with the girder features but I havent decided how I would try an implement this in my house, I would need a USB UIRT which would have to have like a 10 metre cable.
Anyway so Ill get back to that some other time.
I first came across netremote when I was playing round with my HTC Magician. I was dissappointed when it didnt quite make the range I needed, short by about 1 metre, and the magician didnt have Wifi and you couldnt get wifi + storage cards so the girder option was kinda out the question.
So I got my Trinity and was looking around for general software to add to my new baby and found Novii remote deluxe www.novii.tv by accident and thought what the heck ill give it a go and see it goes, I was dissappointed by the range on the trinity (atleast it actually picks up the IRDA on the trinity unlike netremote), but just for kicks and because I still have the magician kicking around I thought I would try it on that. heres the funny bit, It actually gives me the extra distance I need for the magician to work.
So I was wondering in my not very hardware savvy head, and after reading some of the other IR threads in the XDA II and alpine forums.
If anyone know if the IRDA modules are the same in the magician and the trinity? I noticed when using the camera view finder on the devices that blink rate is not seen when the same signal is being sent on the magician when compared to the trinity, and the magician seems abit brighter (I guess that could also be related to the different cams on the devices, I dont have a third cam to test both with). Is it possible in theory to increase the power output via HW/SW control?
Has anyone tried replacing a IR emitter on a magician with a normal tv remote emitter? is it even vaguely possible? would it be something as simple as just changing the Emitter, or would you have to delve deeper into the board?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/files/naked-magician-insane.jpg
Is that the emitter on the edge of the board at about K 17?(see .jpg)
Hold me back I might actually try changing to a normal TV one on my magician if I get bored.
Really just bumping the thread, but if anyone can increase my knowledge in the area I would be most thankful.

Hi,
As far as i know, for 10 feet and above C(ustomer)IR is required and Trinity has only S(erial)IR/F(ast)IR, used only for close range transmission of data, so sorry, but no love - unless you don't mind changing channels next to the TV.
Hi all,
Im considering getting a Blueangle, the processor speed is 400MHz so im gussing its pretty fast? I currently have a Prophet and the specs of the phone look very similar.
Anyways I mainly use my Prophet for music and have a HBH-DS970. How well does the Blue Angle handle A2DP? Has anyone manage to get this headset working with this device?
Im not too worried about WM5 or WM6, which ever runs the fastest with a2dp.
Also can this device be overclocked? Does it give any RAM problems?
Thanks
Processor i fast enough to handle virtually all tasks - never needed to overclock (and yes, it's possible to reach 500MHz, and even 600MHz on some BAs). As it's possible to run WM5/WM6, if you take into account it has 128MB of RAM, this seems to be really nice device. But... Here we come to Bluetooth. A2DP and AVRCP work fine, but you have to remember about range, that is... VERY (and I really mean VEEEERY) limited in BA. In most cases if you have BA in your backpack, you can forget about listening to music. I used HP, creative and Plantronics Plusar A2DP headsets and all work fine, apart from the range. You cannot expect more than 1m of effective range in free air. If you keep your BA in a belt pouch (especially if you have a coat on you), expect a lot of cutting and broken connections.
This is the only device I know with such problems with range.
thanks for the info!
From a spec point of view this device seems excellent but the BT issues would be a major deal breaker for me
Ok my friend has brought his BA into work and its looks fantastic!
Im REALLY tempted to get one of these, at present my Prophet is really annoying me in terms of volume. The speak is just too low.
The keyboard on the BA seems really nice and the screen is fantastic!
Im going to upgrade his to WM6 and test the bluetooth range. If the device can be placed in a case on my belt and bluetooth stereo works then im really considering getting one of these. Has anyone tested this?
Just noticed it doesnt have a mini usb port on the bottom. Not sure how i feel about this at the mo

The bluetooth is one of the weaknesses of the Angel. It's known to have range problems. Search the forums for examples of this to get a feel for it's limits.

Just wondering, why is this an issue? The hermes has a non-standard mini-usb port as well, same as the Angel.
ok ive got my friends BA working with a WM6 rom and noticed wifi issues and some stability issues
We are going to try WM5 roms but just wanted to know what the general opionion was on the stability of the device also how people felt about these wifi issues.
Stability for me would be the main priority over battery life (which people have been saying isnt too great)
Still not sure whether i should get one

Which wifi 'issues' are you referring to? Aside from the lack of range (a known issue with the angel hardware), I've not had any issues with mine.

about the range, i must say YEEEEES! if i wear a thick coat, put BA in inside pocket, then i have to connect the headset EVERY FIVE MINITES OR MORE FREQUENTLY!
I've tried searching, and got no results, so would appreaciate if anyone could help with advice about how to set up an external antenna for the HD2.
The reason for asking is I'm off on a yacht race around GB & Ireland in June, in the absence of a budget that runs to Iridium sat phone connection, we are considering using the HD2 for downloading weather info onto the PC navigation software through the USB/modem feature. An external antenna, mounted on the mast (ie 16 metres higher) would increase the range dramatically. (Other option is we put the HD2 in a plastic bag on top of the mast and run a LONG USB cable up it )

Being a radioamateur myself, I can assure you that the GSM and UMTS frequencies the HD2 uses are 'line-of-sight' frequencies. It really does not matter much to put it on a pole 16 meters high, sorry... Maybe you will receive the mast's signal better, but the mast will not recieve your HD2's signal that much better...

Hear what you're saying pa2ra, but line of sight is d=sqrt(13h), where d = distance and h = height above sea level. So at a height of 1.7m I'll get a range of 4.7 km, at 18m (ie 16m mast +2m boat) I'll get 15.3km - enough of a difference to consider an external antenna
have you thought about signal booster? you can get them from 50$ to 2000+$ depending how strong signal boost you need. those are meant for situations like yours.
those got good antenna, and repeat it to close range.
http://www.mobilesignalbooster.co.uk/
there are tons more, google is friend with "mobile signal booster"
And to answer the original question, the HD2 doesn't have an external antenna connection.

Could be a good start to tell us how much range you actually need... as it sounds it could be 1km as well as 200, and we're not necessarily enough into boating to know where a race takes place, hence the answer about line of sight
How about these:

http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/cellphone/9823/

Thanks all, seems like the signal booster would be the way to go - however at those prices we could afford a sat phone connection - guess I was hoping to be able to plug an existing co-ax in somehow, and achieve the desired result on the cheap!
FWIW - race starts and finishes in Plymouth, so we race around the coast of GB & Ireland - shouldn't be more than 50 miles off land at any point, which would be well out of range at deck level, but might pick up a signal at the top of the mast.

Not suited for GSM / UMTS phones. I think these are only to be used in USA/Canada

Okay. Then I'd rather take some cheap phone that does data connection instead of the HD2. Firstly cause it would suck to have such an expensive device up there IMO, and secondly cause the HD2 isn't renowned to have the best signal reception out there.

Well I was thinking of sacrificing the iPhone I upgraded from, but the tethering charges are horrendous
Any ideas on the cheap phone with data connection, that has an external antennae, preferably on a co-ax connection, would now be appreciated.
You could put a MiFi device at the top of the mast?
The old school T-mobile dash actually has an external antenna connector on it hidden under a plug...and it's pretty old, uses T-mobile frequencies, and is relatively cheap to buy outright now. Plus it's Winmo, and has built-in tether/usb capabilities.

I have done some research to get a decent signal for 3g to my HTC HD2 at my caravan. I found that you can get aerials with a cable terminating in a Modem Mate coupler which can be attached to your phone close to its internal aerial (bottom LHS on back of HD2) or to a usb modem. Only snag is the loss along the cable - normally supplied with 5m. I guess you could get an extension cable if you can tolerate the loss. Supplied by connextech.co.uk search for 3g external in their search box. ( URL not allowed in my post)
I'm not entirely sure what I might have messed up, but...
Got my new galaxy note via amazon.com today, and as any good xda reader, it was rooted within 10 minutes of charging the battery. Installed CheckROM v5 along with CF-Root (both LA4) and everything seems to be working.
Well, ALMOST everything. For some reason, the wifi radio isn't seeing my 802.11a (5GHz) wifi AP. I've verified that the SSID is being broadcast, and that the SSID is seen on my samsung galaxy SII. Nothing on the Note..
Installed "wifi analyzer", and it won't even give me an option for 5GHz (as if there's no 802.11a support on the device.)
I went into the Wlantest mode and it shows options for testing the 5GHz radio, and no strange errors come up when I run those tests.
Any suggestions? Am I missing something here?
It's pretty important to me that I'm able to access some 802.11a AP's, so I'd like to figure out what's going on (or put a stock ROM back on and get amazon to give me an exchange.)
Thanks
Gary
This is a funny problem I am trying to work out myself. I have 2 wireless dual band routers at home. One belkin and one netgear. I can see the 5ghz on the belkin but not the netgear.

I can't see ANY 5GHz network. The Note is acting as if it doesn't have a 5GHz radio whatsoever!

i have the opposite. my note connects to my netgear dgnd3700's 5ghz easily enough. but im running stock 2.3.6 rom (polish plus model), so maybe its something with your rom?
My Note does not see 5ghz on my home Netgear router but does see it at my work's Netgear routers (diff models). I too would like to know more about this.
I'm not going to mess with this - calling up amazon to have them send me a replacement. (done.) If I get two in a row with 5GHz not working, I suppose it'd be possible that the 5GHz hardware is simply disabled for the region they are importing phones from (Brazil? Original firmware is UBKK1)
If that's the case, I guess I'll be returning and ordering from elsewhere.
Take care
Gary
I've just installed a new Netgear WNDR4500, and my Note is able to connect with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz as well!
Maybe. Although it happened on my stock kka Rom and is still the same now that I'm on stock la4 so I am not quite sure that its Rom specific.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Strange... The replacement came in, and it's ALSO missing 5GHz. Looks like a Brazil firmware (UBKK1.)
I've never seen anything like this... I wonder if Amazon knows that the imports they are selling are crippled.
UPDATE:
Found the problem.. Phone comes with a Brazil firmware, so I guess I should set my 802.11a channels to be in the spectrum allowable in Brazil, right?
Doing that, it works. On both the original and replacement phone. I feel stupid now.
Gary
I had inquired about this and only got one answer so I assume not many have tried it. I got the 20GB plan and everything fired up and works fantastic! 55 a month
My only problem is that where I live I only get 3g so much of my plan is wasted. And I have to have an amplifier to get that. Was able to watch Netflix just fine though, with no buffering going on and no hiccups and web access appears to be OK.
But I do travel some and today got LTE all day long while driving. VERY impressed with the bluetooth streaming. I am not really an acoustics snob but do know quite a bit about sound so I was not expecting the clarity/resolution that this phone achieves. Nice!
