Installing / uninstalling applications - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

This may sound dumb, but after uninstalling an application in Windows Mobile do you still have traces of it left in Registry and other places like on the desktop OS?
The normal Windows slows down even when you have many inslalled applications, without starting them. Is that the case with the Mobile version?
I wonder if I install applications to test them and then remove them my Kaiser will slow down over time....

I don't know the answer to this. I know that I won't have to worry about it becasue I flash ROMs weekly. So I get a fresh Registry and since I Hard Reset After a Flash I start at "new."

It's very possible. I have witnessed this myself. Not all applications do this but some will/may. You can use programs like Pocket Mechanic to clean out your registry.

Keep your PPC clean.....
I always use MemMaid to clean out dead registries and shortcuts. Not free but well worth it.

Annoying remnants of uninstalled programs

First of all, I am very very satisfied witj my TyTN II.
Video playback WAS an issue for me (as a AV professional), but I am absolutely satisfied after installing CorePlayer and looking forward to the upgrade to version 1.2 of that program.
Other programs were less to my liking and after evaluation I decided to uninstall them using the uninstall utility of MS Active Sync.
But some of these programs simply refuse to uninstall. So I still have a shortcut to the Feedreader program News Gato in my programs map and I cannot get rid of it.
Even more annoying is the Spite Backup program that came with the TyTN II on CD, which I uninstalled, but still givbes me a warning at startup that the file Sprite.exe cannot be found.
DO ANY OF YOU HAVE A CLUE HOW I SHOULD CLEAN UP?
Thanks!
I know what you mean about annoying programmes which won't disapear when they are uninstalled.
One of them for me is a windows live messenger version which I installed. I couldn't get rid of it by softresetting so I had to do the hard reset.
Moreover, PointUI is anothe programme that when uninstalled, still remains on my programme list. Because of this, I had to also hard reset my device.
The hard reset function is the only solution I know that will rid me of troublesome remnants of programmes...
Try SKtools its a good program and has a few features that clean up your registry and it also has an uninstaller better then the one provided by windows. Don't know if it'll work, but worth a shot.
I had the same problem with Sprite - at their web site I found the following fix, which worked for me:
To uninstall everything from your device and PC please follow these steps;
To remove from your device;
1. Use File Explorer to delete the entire folder on your device;
"\Program Files\Sprite Software" if Sprite Backup was installed on device
or
"\Storage Card\Program Files\Sprite Software" if installed on storage card
2. Use a registry editor (e.g. www.phm.lu) for Windows Mobile device to delete the following key in the registry on your device;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Sprite Software\Sprite Backup]
3. Please also delete the following link file if it exists:
- My Device\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Sprite Backup(.lnk)
To uninstall from your PC;
Steps for manually removing ALL Sprite Software entries from your PC. Please follow these steps carefully to manually remove all Sprite Backup software;
1. Click Start> Run on your PC and type "Regedit" in the bar
2. Delete the following keys;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\AppMgr\Apps\Sprite Software Sprite Backup]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sprite Software\Sprite Backup]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{D8FD4D0D-E171-4FFC-91CE-BA38EEAC5E06}]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sprite Software\Sprite Backup]
3. Close the Registry Editor
4. Use Windows Explorer to delete these folders;
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{D8FD4D0D-E171-4FFC-91CE-BA38EEAC5E06}
C:\Program Files\Sprite Software\Sprite Backup
C:\Program Files\Sprite Software\Sprite Explorer
This will uninstall everything related to Sprite Backup.

I tried that same application ths morning and 2 hours later I was uninstalling it. It looked cool, but my internet was painfully slow, and the gestures were all backwards. To get the menu to slide left, you had to slide your finger right on the screen. The hardware keys didn't work, and then when the application locked up on me that was it. The only way out I found was to hit the end key repeatedly until it finally exited. Then the uninstall instructions didn't work. I think that could be a fine program once it is refined, but right now it was a pain.

I know what you mean about the gestures being in reverse. This took a while to get used to.
By the way, I had the previous blue version installed on my Kaiser, not the latest black version. I suppose I could give it anothe go, but I can't be bothered to do another hard reset if I don't like the programme and want it fully removed
But yes, I do agree that it would be a good programme once all the little technicalities are fixed. I still do like the normal windows 6 UI, after installing Dutty's CAB which makes the start menu bigger

Dutty's enlarged start menu is fantastic. I can navigate the start menu w/o my stylus. One of the best, easiest, and most useful mods out there!

I tried SK Tools...and it did the job!
Thanks for the tip

Sytem Cleanup: What Can I Delete?

Running TyTNII and HTC 6.1 ROM w/HardSPL 3.56 to get rid of the hangs. Now I'm looking to 'tune' the platform as I begin installing more and more software.
I own a copy of Pocket Mechanic, but I'm reluctant to delete certain files, folders and registry keys when using the cleanup utilities without knowing for sure whether or not they're needed. In times past when using the PM registry cleaner, I've notced that deleting certain keys has caused the unit to actually slow down, rather than get better.
Are there any recommendations as to what's safe to delete, or what must remain behind?
For instance:
Fonts folder?
OneNote folder?
Recycle Bin folder?
I just don't want to get myself into hot water, here.
Thanks!
good question
ive not had my tilt for very long and as with any new toy i installed anything and everything i could.
then i found my tilt running like a pig.
so yes, if anyone out there knows of a good registry cleaner, please share

There are a number of utilities to help clean your system out there. I use Pocket Mechanic by Wizcode (Anton Tomov), but there are other good choices out there.
The question I have, is that in times past when I deleted certain registry keys (be they empty or otherwise), the machine actually slowed down and became less stable.
So that's the nature of my question. I know that Pocket Mechanic will find duplicate, empty and unused files and (allegedly) unused registry keys. But my experience is that it's not always quite as simple as "point and click". I'm listing this question under the heading of "What I don't know can hurt me very much."
I use MemMaid and have had no problems with it but I always use Sprite Backup first. I like to maintain a series of at least the previous three backups and just before some major system changes like installing or cleaning is a good time to make one.

programs uninstaller!

I tried searching the board but didnt find any appropriate link regarding this..
anyway there are some factory programs loaded that I dont need/use, is there a way to remove them to free up RAM?
uninstall
if you are referring to uninstallation tts similar to uninstalling a program on windows...
then u can find it under Start >>> Settiings.. not the tf3d's settings but the one under windows mobile
there should be a icon called REMOVE PROGRAMS under the SYSTEM tab..
alternatively, you could run activesync and under program management untick the relevant programs and it will uninstall on its next sync

im talking about the stock programs...not anything that I installed. I'm talking about the factory loaded programs like windows live, bubble breaker, internet explorer, RSS hub, etc. I want to remove those to free up space.
its called cooking your own ROM..
you can have certain things not load up by doing a soft-reset when the auto-config pops up on 1st boot after ROM upgrade or hard-reset..
but then you gotta go find the cabs for the stuff that you want

[Q] Restore memory?

Does anyone have / know of a way to restore the program memory back to it's original state without having to soft-reset? I've tried Memaid, Oxios Hibernate, SKTools, etc, etc...
Anyone who has used a Diamond for more than a day will know that program memory just disappears, even after killing all applications and running one of the apps mentioned, it just won't come back! I've discovered some ROM's are better than others, but none of them are what I'd call 'reasonable' at memory managing.
Where does it go to, and why is a soft-reset needed to get all available program memory back? Any development wizzes got an idea on this?
I'm using ipaq 6818 with nhocbanme cooked rom. he was added a software called FREE MEM to OEM but it's only able to recover some of missing memory. Normal memory after soft reset 28 - 30mb. after several times use for activities it'll drop to 17 - 23mb which all app has been killed via task manager. after do free mem it's only recover about 1.5mb and couldn't totally recover like first time after soft reset. but it's Ok for me since this nhocbanme cooked rom is very fast and very very stable for my ipaq 6818. the minus is this rom looks very dark. if u are not change the folders icon
It seems that WM is bad at managing memory and lets a number of bad programs take up space after closing. Opera seems to be one of the worst culprits; I wish we had a better browser for the Diamond.
NoTSR helps sometimes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446928
I rarely use it, prefering to soft reset often.

... yes, you're right. Opera seems very 'memory hungry' - can't understand why memory management apps can't release the memory afterwards though. Probably something to do with Microsoft - as usual!!

[Q] How to clean up /dbdata/databases/

Dear all, sorry if this has been answered already. I tried to search, but couldn't find a solution.
I noticed that /dbdata/databases/ contains the folders for applications which I had uninstalled long ago. Looks like all application leave a footprint behind.
I am not aware which other files/folders are just getting filled up because of the applications which I had installed just to play around, and then uninstalled them.
I do not want to fully wipe my phone just to clean up these footprints. Is there any other way of cleaning unnecessary files/folders from the phone?
Really appreciate all the pointers.
+1
I'm new to android, and I would like to know if this OS is like Wimo with all these softwares leaving so much "footprints".
A tool like SKTools for Wimo or CCleaner for XP would be great.
I have started on an app to do that, check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013063
Any help is appreciated.
