Opera Mini 4.1...Full Broadband speeds over wifi!! - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi all. sorry if this is old news, but for years my internet speeds over wifi have rarely exceeded 1.2 mbps. Since using Opera mini, I am able to get FULL BROADBAND speed (only 2 mbps in my case) and upload speeds of 236 kbps (that's faster than on my desktopPC!!)
I'm baffled. Has anyone else noticed this or as the start of my thread questions, is this old news?
I have verified that the speeds achieved are REAL, as I can browse and download faster on my PPC than I can on my desktop PC.

how are you verifying these speed? are u doing a speedtest on opera mini?

Of course you get as you're practically measuring the opera server - taget server speed, NOT that of the client.
Down/Uploading to/from the client itself is 3-5 times slower than for example from IEM because it's Java. See my latest benchmark results in the General forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=386682

doesnt opera compress pictures so they download to your phone fast? If thats the case most speed tests will use a picture file for testing bandwidth. If this is the case then your tests are incorrect. please let us know what speedtest site you are using.

Either way, these fiugures ARE incorrect because the Opera server does compress both pages and images, unlike most other, direct browsers. Check out my benchmarks - they clearly show this.

sorry about the delayed response guys. thanks for the heads up Menneisyys. If you say so, it must be so, but it sure feels as fast as the speedtest implies.

WM6 wifi sucks?

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone experience bad wifi connections with WM6. I have highspeed at home and i connect it thur Wifi max..for my psp. thou, I have not been able to experience smooth internet surfing. It's slow and choppy, and I don't have any downloads or traffic going on? Does anyone experience this?
I also tried this tweaks and still no improvements.?
Does anyone out there have good experience with wifi on the wizard or it's just my setting? I want to figure that out? thank you for your time reading this post.
This is the original Reg Key on the Wizard "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\comm\TNETWLN1\Parms\"dot11Supp ortedRateMask" Dword (1). Leave this "as it is" and add the one that I added here and if its already in the reg then verify that its edited to the correct "Dword (4)" If the oder key is not there tahn it could be any othr problem but usualy I have this problem when I had both keys Dword 1 and "G" Dword 8 after I change that 8 to be a 4 my problem was resolved.
Please don"t change, edit or delete this one:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\comm\TNETWLN1\Parms\"dot11Supp ortedRateMask" Dword (1)"
For a stable Wifi on My 8125 I had to edit on the registry, I had to edit it as this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\comm\TNETWLN1\Parms\"dot11Suppo rtedRateMaskG" Dword (8) This one is not good on AKU3.3 or neither on WM6. But is not very stable with this Rom Faria's AKU 3.3 so you have to edit to:
This is the perfect reg key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\comm\TNETWLN1\Parms\"dot11Suppo rtedRateMaskG" Dword (4) After editing reset the device by turning off and on or by using the Shot down Key don't use stylus because could cause that the registry dosen't
gets saved.
hklm\comm\tnetwln1\parms\dot11supportedratemask
enable=8
disable=1
i got the orwells rom..and its perfect on wifi.. i geet an awesome signal..better thn wm5 ..and plus i can stream movies online !... like i was watching trailers and they were playing 150kkbps+..which is pretty awesome for a small device like that..streaming music at 100kbps +... id say just try out a clean rom and try out ...
Awesome!
Wow, your wifi must be really good to stream video online, what program are you using to stream video? I tried a few like handitv, but doesn't stream live.....and only work fast enough when I have my usb connected to my comp but not wifi?
Oh also I am using the clean WWE WM6 version. maybe it's my wifi max hmm, but I can play online with it on my psp thou I can't seem to get smooth wifi internet connection with my wizard ..even on my psp it's smooth internet.haha...
Well least I know wizard is capable of having smooth wifi on WM6, I'll keep reading post and researching then cause it's my setting problem then.
BTW what is your internet speed and what router you use? Also did you use any tweaks or modified the reg?
Try using a regular wifi router.
Would if I could.
I would have tried it on a wifi router if I had one, I didnt' choose to buy one cause I heard the connection isn't as fast as cable or ADSL. Only bought the wifi max for my psp.
But at least now I know WM6 wifi is capable of fast and smooth internet. Well at least one person replied he did.

WIFI works very well on my WM6, no speed problems, downloading like it should... using protected wifi network
does wifi max work on wm6.1?
I have an HTC Touch vx6900 upgraded to wm6.1 and I love it. My internet is lightning fast. Even while streaming live tv with orb and downloading torrents on my pc live tv is smooth, no buffering at all. I only like using wifi max for my psp when I am out of town so i can still play socom ftb2, at home I have a router. My problem is that I had wifi max running perfectly with my lame treo vx750. Now I can't seem to get it working with my HTC. I've tried reinstalling everything drivers and all. I'm at the point where my phone's internet is connected to my laptop with pdanet at 2.4mbps, and wifi max connected and set to an access point. Internet is still lighting fast on my laptop, but when i scan for a signal on my psp it will come up as wp_lan at 100% but the internet connection on my psp always fails. I've tried tinkering with the zydas settings and the PSP WIFI Max Media Manager settings but nothing seems to work. I must be forgetting something, does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone gotten a setup like this to work? Like i said i had it working with my treo. I really wouldn't think my phone would be the problem, because an internet connection on my laptop has already been established. Just not on my psp. I've been trying to figure this out for days, I need help from someone smart lol

Horrible 3G speed.

I did some dslreports speed tests. With 2 or 3 bars of 3G service. My blackjack consistently got 700kbit to 1000kbit from dsl reports. I'm using one of the media max packages. The Title however is horribles low, even sluggish. I can't get over 103kbit per second. I verified this by running the Internet Sharking app in the windows directory on the device, and trying the same test via my laptops browser, again, horrible slow compared to my blackjack, by a factor of 10.
Anyone know why this would happen?
-James
I take it back, I popped my sim back into my blackjack and it to is now horribly slow on the internet, like the Tilt.
I ordered this Title on Friday, could anything have happened to my account or provisioning to cause this? I did not change my plan in any way.
I'm hoping it is just a temporary issue with 3G service in my area.
-James
I'm having an awful time with 3G on my Tytn II. I assume its the very old radio that has been used on it.
It seems slower than it should yes, people who got 700+ on their i600 dropped to 300 on the Kaiser, I've never seen better than 450, still a bit better than 3G I guess...

Make your GPS connect faster!

I found an application called SeaSGEE, that helps you connect to any GPS faster than ever before. I tried HTC's QuickGPS, but that still took a while to connect, now it only takes me about 10 seconds to connect to google earth, and less than 5 sec to connect to iGuidence, compared to minutes.
Have fun... just drag it into your phone, and run... its a freeware!
link: http://rapidshare.com/files/101356793/SeaSGEE.exe.html
Hi I just read a few posts on here about that program and apparent it does work really well for some. What I wanted to know was what does this actually do? I know it works in the same was as the program QuickGPS but I still don't really understand how it works. And can you make it update manually through WIFI because I don't have any data plan whatsoever. Can this program turn on any data connections that I would have to worry about?
I use GPSGate and it's made my GPS connect really fast.
SeaSGEE has been discussed to considerable extent here at XDA.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=336531
From what I've read, the verdict seems to be that it does rapidly decrease the wait time.
Looks good!
i will definitely give it a try

I'm sorry to say it didn't work for me. I hadn't used my GPS for quite some time, but updated regularly with QuickGPS (automatically updates when connected to my Laptop) and it took nearly 20 minutes to get a fix. I both tried QuickGPS and SeaSGEE.
i dont really use the phones gps much, because both of my cars have nav in them. but i do use it sometimes if i am walking and i cant find a store or what not.
it would be helpful if the gpd would connect faster. is there any confirmation that with this program the gps with connect a wholte lot faster?
.CAB for those of you who want to try it.
although i do not see it speeds up a (already) hot start, it does have an automatic data update, scheduled for every 3 days. it can also download data from wi-fi or USB ActiveSync through PC - so no data plan, no problem.

i.e, it should help a cold start most, when you need it most!!! many thanks for posting this little utility...
it doesn't add battery comsuption either.
just shame can't uninstall quickGPS - it really is useless!
Thanks

Thanks for the cab SH4Y!!
This is a LOT faster; QuickGPS did nothing for me.
+1 for this CAB....
so.. i had a question..
Does baud rate have any effect on the GPS..
ive played around with it and faster rates dont seem to make any difference.
anyone have an explication?

The baud rate setting you mention is the GPS interface to the serial port of the PPC device.
Getting a GPS fix depends on the present location of the satellites in relation to you. It can be speeded up somewhat by having certain satellite data pre-loaded.
But, the more satellites you can "see" (and the less obstructions between them and you), the quicker and more accurate your fix will be. This can help explain why so many people are reporting different results with the same programs.
I recommend reading the below Wikipedia article if you want to know more about how the constellation works.

So what is the overall verdict of this???

Increase your internet speed Tip TOuch PRo Tested

Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then add the following registry values:
Value name: MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
Value data: 32
Base: Decimal
Value Name: MaxConnectionsPerServer
Value data: 16
Base: Decimal
Exit Registry Editor.
then softreset and do a speed test
Now this tweak will only extend your phones bandwidth enabling you to download more data at the same time (like images and the sorts) giving your phone the feel of it downloading faster. so the main focus is, i increased your bandwidth now social sites and this site will fly i garantee it!!!!
sorry been gone awhile working on other projects, and this was a tweak for a friend i put together from some other sources, but made sure its win mobile specfic. By the way do this as well on your home computer even on dail up and you will be amazed!
First image is a 512 Test
Second Image is 1 MB Test
thanks alot giving it a shot now!
I did a DSL Reports test and got 60 Kb/s at home (EDGE). After adding the new DWORD value it was 174 kb/s! Coincidence? Fluke? Will keep monitoring for sure, but seems to be working. Maybe they should add this to the Tweaks sticky. Thanks!
Okay, I tested it.
First, I tested the speed using IE at 1MB. After three tests, it came to: 946Kbps, 832Kbps, and 953Kbps. This is an average of 910Kbps.
Afterwards, I made the necessary registry edits, and soft reset. After giving WinMo time to load, I went back to the website to do the same test, these were the results: 1375Kbps, 1180Kbps, and 1046Kbps. This is an average of 1200Kbps.
There is very good increase in speed, but it doesn't appear to be stable. I perform a few tests later and it seems to went down to the area of around 800-900Kbps. I will continue to perform tests to see if the speed is truly increased.
For now, though, thank you for the great topic!

let me clarify things. If you did a speed test with this tweak and your speed say is 1200,
then an hour later its average is 900, its your network. its simply overlaoded.=
( alot of people are using the data service at the same time you are killing bandwidth)
now say with out the tweak your average is 900, when your network becomes overloaded it will be some where at 500 or lower.
conculsion: it still increases speed on peak hours and off peak hours. dont believe test it
Do you think that this will work for Internet Sharing?

Possibly, but it seems difficult to believe since the speed decrease came as a result of more tests performed no more than a few minutes after the initial '1200kbps' test.
Unfortunately, constantly inputting and removing a registry edit on the phone is rather a hassle, so I simply performed more tests with the tweak. The original '1200Kbps' test result still has not appeared again, but I do plan to continue testing this, including in the middle of the night when peak hours are less likely.
I did this on my Fuze and it went from an average of 100kbps to an average of 40kbps. Did 4 tests each way and that's the result I had.
On AT&T, using EDGE.

So I did the hack and here are my findings. I used two different browsers, Skyfire and Opera all on a 3G connection on 1M download. There was a slight increase in speed but nothing huge. Here are the graphs that I made for some visual.
My suggestion if you want a fast connection... Just use Skyfire!

an increase is positive, no matter how much
My internet connection has always been quicker than any of my friends connections, even my fiance on the same plan, same network, same phone. I am on alltel, verizon now, and am in disbelief. I was not looking to speed my internet up but I saw the tread and like it was said, any more speed is better. I have never tested my speed because I didn't care but I tested today just to get a before and after for the tweak. I am not fooled by the results but am wondering why I am getting inaccurate results. In opera the speed read 10008, in IE it read 8236, in skyfire it read 8008 and higher. I tried each numerous times, and soft reset and could not get the value under 8008. And no I'm not using wifi, not even on.

That's what I do, if I'm at work and I'm sick of working I come on here and worry about stuff that doesn't really justify it. Still wondering if anyone else is or has experienced this and why.
curious as the earlier poster
I too, am also curious how this will affect the tethering speed and if this doesn't work for tethering if there is another registry edit that we can do to increase the tethering speed.
*Edit Oops, nvm.
It worked for me. I didn't see the second registry value, only modified the first one.
Mine was whopping!
Shoot, I didn't test a before, but my after was a whopping 7984kbps the first time out, then followed by 8291kbps. Tested in San Francisco, CA.

Alright.. gave this a try.. there are two types of numbers to change.. a hex number and a decimal number. In all my reg edits before I've never had to change the decimal and always the hex so I did that AND there was no difference.... if anything the speed dropped a bit but that could have been because of the network. I would have expected it to increase a bit though! I must have done something wrong.
My origina hex value was 4 so I changed that to 10. The decimal value was 16 and that stayed the same
I've attached a photo so you can see what I'm talking about.
The first is the before speed test. Then the second is the change I made, the third is the speed test after (I reset as well before doing the second speed test)
Thanks

Help Transferring Large Files

My friend doesn't have a computer but wants to transfer large files from a droid Eris to me on my N1. We are doing this across the country, so we have to use the internet. GMail won't let her attach the files, it says they are too big to attach, Youcast corrupts the files on transfer.
What solutions do you have to bypass the file size limit in gmail? We want to do direct sending. The files are private and we don't want to put them on rapidshare, etc.
Thanks!
One of you installs SwiFTP, enables global proxy, the other installs AndFTP and connects to the first one through the global proxy, then you initiate download and wait ages with both phones charging from time to time, because they'll drain the battery very fast.
The smart thing would be avoiding the phones completely, and sending from computer to computer. Or at least using Dropbox or something.
I second what Jack said.
Just use Pando on your computer.
www.pando.com/
With unlimited net plans on many accounts it makes sense to have unlimited file transfer. Often I have 3G speeds that compete with my home DSL, so the age of personal computer as a necessity is waning.... hence the great specs in the N1 and phones to follow.
I understand FTP as a standard.... what else is out there?
Then tether your phone to your pc? Its not logical to use your phone to transfer large files over a 3g network, plus your ISP might not like that, since you will be using a lot of bandwidth.

If you like your phone to last less than 6 hours or stay on constant charge - by all means.
The only direct transfer is FTP, and most cellular ISPs don't provide you with IP that can be accessed from internet, AFAIK. Thus the need for global proxy (with phone-initiated connection) to have the phone accessible on the internet.
Nothing else that I know of, definitely not direct transfer.
I'm ok with something that is hosted on a server, so long as it is only for the intended recipients. We wouldn't want prying eyes to see would we?
When I said large files, the largest I think we've come across was 150MB, most are in the 7-25MB file size. I'm not talking gigs here, not even a gig a month for sure....
We have been trying to use YouCast, it is in the market... they upload it to their servers via the app and then email the download link to your recipient. It is a good concept but the .3gp files get corrupted quite frequently. Boo. I know the files aren't corrupted before sending because on a resend of the same exact source file the received copy will be corrupted at a different spot and sometimes (hopefully) it gets received with no corruption at all.
With GMail claiming I have 7000+ MB of personal storage, why must they limit my uploads?? whyyyyy?
You both can install teamviewer. Its a RDP software for the PC, but also has file sharing.
http://www.teamviewer.com/products/benefits.aspx
It is a free software for home users. This is the features it has.
AFAIK, mediafire should be able to upload files from your phone directly. It's gonna take a while, and you'll need a file manager from the market, but I think that would be a pretty easy approach
