I am getting my Tilt in the mail on monday, and am wondering what everybody wishes they had known to (or not to) do when they first unboxed it and did the initial boot.
Should I skip the AT&T bloatware, or is it really not that horrible to deal with? Should I play with settings and the tweaks, or should I just not waste my time and flash the thing? Should I do a rain dance before putting the battery in, in hopes it will hold off the red led?
Oh, and I am coming from a wizard that I have flashed no less than a dozen times, and have gone through every UI i can find (legally or not). And am VERY impressed with the latest pointui release, which may or may not find it's way onto the tilt the day I open it.
Thanks!!
If your comming from a wizzard then you are bound to find out that your wizzard was faster. the Kaiser is slow in different areas and lacks Video Drivers.
From the Kaiser I've learned what COULD be accomplished with a PPC, and how fast it could be, but it isnt quite there yet...

Never buy HTC!
My Tilt still treats me fine..... Yes, drivers would be nice but for everyday use, I couldn't have gone wrong. Waiting to see what the official WM6.1 will hold.
You are gonna have fun!
I personally would leave it alone for 30 days so you can get a base line.
Bill
iPhone will be my next phone if the next HTC product isn't better.
your gonna love it
I just got my tilt last week cuz I got drunk and lost my wizzard.
first let me say your going to love the tilt
no more of that A-GPS crap now you've got real gps
also 3G which is so so so much faster
oh and there is this panarma feature that is realy neat
somethings I wish I know and imo are notwqorthy
the keyboard FN keys are totalls different but that's just getting usto
commercial eing from thw wizard I bet your usto scrolling with scroll bars well in the titlt u can grab and scroll tuff to explain but think of it like moveing a physical peicse of paper in front of you up and down
I would kep the att rom for atleast a week cuz u get some nifty applications like mobi tv xm ssatileite radio trail for 3 days each
lastly gogle maps atleast for me sucks gmaps like forgets I have a gps after like 1 or 2 minutes I hate to say it but M$ live is far superior the gps part is acurete and updates very nicely
ps
don't forget to run the quick gps location under tools before using the gps
quick gps downloads where the satellites are in orbit for faster aqusition time
I belive if u don't do this the gps has to search and find em but doing this it knows and just has to connect
my 2 cents on the tilt hope you found this helpful

Pure bollocks.
I've had a Wizard, Hermes, and just got a tilt a week ago.
I can personally say the tilt/kaiser is WAY faster than the Hermes, which was way faster than the Wizard.
Dutty's wm6.1 non-cube rom is great. No hard resets. In fact it hasn't locked up on me once.
What did I learn about my Tilt
I've learned several things about the Tilt in general:
Considering I've come from a MIO P550 GPS/PDA and an ATT Razor v3m, the Kaiser is a suprisingly good compromise between the two.
The GPS is far more accurate (though I have yet to find an affordable and decent map solution) than the P550;
not as good on picking up a usable signal as the V3 (but not bad either).
Battery life is a little better than the MIO P550 PDA.
Screen's smaller but plays video a hell of a lot better than either the V3 or the P550.
Definitely lose the AT&T bloat ware...most of the non subscription stuff you can get to from Media Net anyway. Besides I don't use half of it anyway.
I used SPB Pocket Plus on the PDA, it works just fine here too.
Bluetooth...the bane of the Tilt's existence. Call audio sucks and Voice command doesn't work over the headset (yeah I know there's hacks out there). I'm hoping if and when the official WM 6.1 for ATT comes out this will resolve.
RLOD - So far I've been blessed, but the thing is still under warranty so chances are it'll happen one minute after that warranty expires...(Murphy's law doncha know...)I know where to go to fix that little mess and possible problems.
Overall, I'd say I'm satisfied with the Kaiser/TyTnII/Tilt, it does exactly what I want it to, when I need it to. Like many products I've experienced, it has its quirks, but it also has its charm too. I'm half tempted to flash to Dutty's WM 6.1 for ATT, but I think I'll just wait (for a very long time from what I hear) for the official HTC release.
I <3 my tilt all day long! So yeah, I can type out a whole sentence before the first letter is displayed, that doesn't mean my tilt doesn't <3 me back. Or does it?
On a serious note, I think the tilt is great and yes there could be video drivers, but that was so 2007, I have learned to love it even with its flaws.
GPS owns!
Among the first things I would do:
Find the Bluetooth audio quality and microphone hacks.
Get rid of Cyberon, and get MS Voice Command 1.6.
Find the PTT Button Remap hack, and map MSVC to it.
Find the hack for One-Button activation of MSVC from BT headset.
This has made all the difference for my use in the car, the office, and on the jobsite; I don't have to touch the phone to use it, which is as it should be!
First off: change your rom. much faster, more usable.
what did i learn?
well tilt was my first pda and first phone with a physical keyboard.
i learned:
_xda community is a great place
_3G is not all its cracked up to be. At all.
_physical keyboard is not at all more accurate than my ipod's touch keyboard. No lie.
_if I have wifi, im def gonna be browsing with my ipod touch. faster, better, and much easier.
_i would buy another htc product, but not until they get their sht straight. hopefully soon.
_Dutty is a your friend
_touchscreen is not touchscreen if it doesnt have multitouch (unless you use your stylus, but who has time for that?)
Wish i had know of the driver issue b4 getting and 18 month contract 6 down 12 to go ....
I wish my hermes would have lasted longer..... damn white screen!!
What have you learned from your Kaiser?

That I need eye surgery to read the damn thing! Seriously, although these (older) eyes are getting worse by the day, I am very happy with mine.
That they don't like being dipped in Castrol Synthetic 10w/40.
What I have Learned:
Tilt NEEDS to be tweeked out from unboxing to become user friendly. (IMO)
Reading on this site (Wiki and ROM threads) helps you tweek your phone how you would like it. Radio's work differently for different people in different areas.
Every ROM is different and can be custom fit to your prefrence by searching or asking questions in the CORRECT thread.
There are many helpful people on this site so watch the way to respond to people and their answers. Always say thanks!!!
You can accomplish anything with this site (I have been on here since Oct. 07' and I have never started a thread!) I just have common sense to know where to post
Have a great day!
~22~
p.s. P1 but the Castrol Synthetic 10w/40 helped the keyboard right....lol!
What did I learn?
Not to buy a HTC anymore. It promises a lot and delivers less.
Although I am not unhappy with this device it never gave me what I expected after reading several reviews. It is slow, heavy, bad camera, etc.
I had hoped that HTC would be a bit more customer focused.
..
TyTN II.. Is great!
-GPS
-Keyboard
-Tilting screen :O..
-Video Drivers (o.o?.. ok no no Video drivers).
-400 Mhz!!..
-2 cameras
-Poor performance of principal camera on dark places.
-Fully Customizable : D!
-3G.. (here in mexico that means: "videocalls Dude!!")
-HSDPA (Unlimited data plan and you get Fast Broadband Internet Connection On The Go! .. use it with your laptop )
-A2DP !!
-WiFi..(when you dont have Unlimited data plan !)
-I said Tilting screen already? :O
-MicroSDHC.. (that means 32gb of Memory.. or Multiple memory cards ..)
-Office
-MMS
-SMS
-Push to Mail
-PTT
-Voice Commander!! (its funny ear your phone read your sms's!)
-And more more more...
The only thing that it needs is the Prover video Drivers...
And because of that many people is saying things like that
"Not to buy a HTC anymore. It promises a lot and delivers less."

Hi all,
first of all, many thanks to all of you that contribute to this board. Amazing stuff, thank you.
I'm in the market for a new handset and have been attracted to the Tytn II, Vario III or whatever you want to call it, for a few weeks now. I currently own a Windows Mobile 6 smartphone (HTC S620) and am looking to get back to owning a pocket PC phone.
My question is this...
Should I splash out and get a Vario III (T-Mobile) now or wait for the next device in the Tytn / Vario series?
I realise that to wait for the 'next best thing' I'll be waiting forever, but does anybody know when the new Tytn III will be available? If not for another year or so, then I will purchase the Tytn II now, but if the next device in the series will be coming in the next few months (first half of next year), then perhaps I should wait.
Any advice you can give me will be very much appreciated.
Thanks to all,
Munkee
Since the Vario 3 only came out in september/october time, I'm guessing that any replacement would be at least a year away.
I just couldn't imagine a tytn 3/Vario 4 being released in the next few months.

They've been releasing a new version every year around the same time (to get the Christmas/etc sales). My guess, TyTn 3 / Vario 4 will be around Sept/Oct '08.

Only if you're mad will you contemplate a HTC product
Read some of the threads here about video performance
When you compare the video/camera to other phones, you'll find it poor. It's even poor compared to the model it's replacing
For video/camera, the LG Viewty kicks the Tytn II's pants.
Look at what you really want in a phone, then if it's a WM phone, read these forums.

Aside from the poor drivers, the tytn 2 is still a great phone. plus, there are tons of people here working on fixing the disabled drivers. In the next month or two, I see a fix for it and everyone will be praising XDA and their tytn 2's
Get it now....upgrade later! Like everyone already posted here, TyTN II and the variants just came out, so, any newer version is quite a wait!

Yes, it is a great phone, "specification wise", just let down by shoddy/non-existant drivers, and lack of support by HTC
It is hoped we can get a driver work around, however how usable that is might be supject to Intellectual Property issues.
HTC can fix something (witness the Hotfix for Bluetooth), I just hope they are reading this forum and witnessing the bad-feeling the issue of decent Video and Camera drivers is causing
Ahh hell I'll jump in, if you wait, it will be at least 9 months. When I got my 8525 about this time last year, there was a picture of the Kaiser floating on the web as the next generation. It took 9 months to come out and even with all the whining and wenging here, I can easily say that the Kaiser, which I bought the minute I could get one, is really a solid performer.
I use Slingbox streaming video with great performance
TCPMP (and soon Core 1.2) for Divx Movie Videos with great performance. I've always encoded portable video at 320x240 and it plays and looks great.
Integrated GPS and a good nav package (I like iGuidance v4) with spoken TTS street names is simply a killer app for a phone.
Streaming radio stations, youtube, Google maps, Live Search, all of it works great.
Tweaked drivers will be good to see, but for now I find everything working just well enough to allow me to use all features without any frustration.
With the great support on this forum this good product becomes a great product that gets better every week, till TyTN III comes along and we start again...

I have to agree on that.
On the missing video drivers: I don’t use camera or watch video with the Kaiser, so that doesnt bother me on the daily use.
Even though releasing a device without proper drivers is unforgivable!!!
Imagine BMW putting a new car on sale with buyers realising the 3rd gear is missing and BMW would just go; oh yes, we will try to put it in, in your 30 000 km tune-up.

Sorry I read this and from what I an see it basically came from someone who haes windows devices and the only thiing they can do is slag them off.
I run a tytnII and it is brilliant, it has so much built into it that nothing can come close for useability, upgradeability, flexibility etc.
Sure go out and buy an N95 ar a viewty but then be stuck with bugs in noka software, poor slide quality on the n95 and then be limited with what little applications that aren't available to run with the symbain OS.
As for the viewty well you are obviously not in the right market for commenting on a smartphone/windows mobile handset.
Tom
I've been using PDA's since the days of the Psion Organiser (around 1988) and I have to say that my Tytn II is without doubt the best device I've ever owned.
I've had it since October and I still can't fault it for what I use it for.
I know about the video driver issue, but I can't say it really bothers me - yes I'd like it fixed, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying my PDA.
For background - I normally enjoy a device for about 2 months and then get the urge to change to a different one. This hasn't happened yet with the Tytn II. I can't imagine being without it. It may not be perfect, but it's pretty damned close!
Something I would add is that the TyTN II is a device that can do a lot but surely if you wanted to watch a video you would use a TV??
The device is a PDA therefore to me that means the following:
Email
Internet
Calendar
Contacts
Tasks
For keeping track of things you want to track most and being able to be mobile with your email and internet when and if you need it.
Plus having a phone as well.

Woohoo! Yay for the good old Psions - I had a Psion 3C and then a Revo - wonderful pocket organizers - especially liked the keyboard on the Revo - all in all the best little PDA at the time IMHO.
The logical evolution of that is the Nokia Communicator series - I seriously considered getting one of them before I got my Wizard - but decided that the customizable nature of the Windows Mobile platform was the way to go, for me.

Performance at what ? if you go compare start up times of apps like contacts, video, sound etc, on other phones (eg Viewty, N95) they are often faster than the Tytn
As I stated in my post, you need to examine what you want in a phone
The Tytn II has lots of good things, unfortunately HTC's shotcuts and cost cutting have meant it's sub-optimal.

I have a TyTn One and loved the features but under WM5 almost any external programs I installed made it less stable. After Roming to WM6 the experience is much better - I use the T-mobile offical rom with a mixture of HTC plugins and external apps which makes it almost perfect - and it crashes perhaps once a month compared to several times a week.
I am looking to upgrade too but am not sure what to. Kaiser has GPS which I will like as a toy, and more RAM (don't care about ROM as have gigs of external) - RAM I care about as after loading the TYTN with apps I run at about 85% memory. I can see the Kaiser will solve these but otherwise the experience will be the same as TYTN with WM6. Is there anything else I should be considering?
What else on the market compares to these? If you are willing to criticise the TYTN2 then say what is better and why? My upgrade comes up in month and unless I see something radical I am in for more of the same (albeit slightly better).
the kaiser is a powerful device, and got alot under its skin, unforunatly its creators didnt give it the proper software/drivers etc
but its still a remarkable device, with amazing specs, we just need to fix what htc couldnt/wouldnt do...just as we do with windows, we mod it, fix it, makes it smoother and better
I had my herald, p4350, for aprox a year, it has been a great device, and still is.
When I got it, it had stock rom, to me it was a great device, and then I started to work on it...slowly I have learned to understand it. Now with my latest rom on my herald, with netcf 3.5 and my tweaks and all, my herald feels faster and responds way better then my tytn2. That really puzzels me, because my tytn2 has surperior hardware specs. But Im pretty sure that with the help of the amazing crew here on xda, the kasier will become the flagship it is ment to be.
cheers

Actually, YOU'RE the mad one if you think the Tilt is a terrible phone for everyone on the planet. I don't watch videos on my phone, i don't ride in busses or do other things where i'm sitting for a long time, and if i have a few minutes i browse the web with IE or opera (some sites are better in one or the other.. IE gets a bad wrap, but almost every blog i read has a mobile version that works great in IE, but not so well in opera).
And everyone *****es about the video drivers, but it's not that bad... my friend had a full episode of Top Gear that was 640 x 352 that he couldn't play on his 8525, but it played great on my phone. I know people have issues, but it's not terrible, and calling someone mad without even knowing what they would want is just ignorant.
I love my Tilt and i'd recommend it to anyone who knows what getting into windows mobile means (because WinMo is the big problem). Besides, it's already been confirmed that Google has an Android kernel for our processors, so once it all comes out, we can put android on the Tilt, making it an awesome phone!

call me stupid or something a lot worse but i really fancy getting an iphone but i dont know how good they really are. what software or cooking can be done? i have today just played with one and it feels and works nice. i think i will not get rid of my keiser tho it is a fantastic phone. has anyone got one and what are your thoughts
How dare you....ha ha, just kidding!
I do not have an iPhone....nor do I play one on TV. That being said this is what I know (or think I know):
1. Love the form factor
2. Love the smooth graphics
3. You can "hack" the iPhone so that you can install programs (in fact, I saw someone put the coolest game ever on one called iPhysics). I am really hoping someone here on xda-dev can port that one to WinMo.
4. It is NOWHERE NEAR as customizable as the WinMo platform. If you like tweaking, changing, messing with your phone settings...then stick with WinMo.
5. If only the two could be merged into one device.....
My 2 cents. Others may challenge my observations. Good luck.
As much as I would like one, there still are many shortcomings that make me stick with my tilt, with the primary one being that I cannot sync to my exchange server at work yet. Additionally, the lack of 3rd party software. I have been a Windows Mobile user for about 8 years now and I've built up a rather large list of frequently used applications and games to get me through the day. I'm also holding off for increased storage as my music collection alone is over 30 gb and adding videos on top of that, 8 gb just doesn't cut it.
Not quite sure how this thread fits in the Kaiser upgrade section though.
Price and customizations
Pros and cons over a Kaiser
Pros
1) Sleeeeeeeeeek
2) Really Nice browsing and multimedia experience(though it might not support some formats)
3) Like Borat says it has p.. magnet installed.
4) Works well with Mac and PC(iTunes)
5) 8GB Memory
6) Absolutely no worry about which radio or OS build to use.No sleepless nights burning new builds.Peach of mind.
Cons
1) Price (I got my tilt for 150$ in ATT premier)
2) No GPS hardware
3) If you have an unlock one, it will be a brick when you update a new firmware.
4) No outlook server sync
5) If your are with ATT then you have to have the Data Connection even if you don't need it(extra $)
6) Remember you will never see the beautiful tricolor screen ever.. ever in your life.
7) No 3G
For me the cost to feature and can't customize factors are deal breakers

I just hate Apple!
Not to take anything away from their products....they do make some nice stuff.
I too, have alot of programs that I use, all my movies and music are ready to go....just drag and drop on my sd card. I don't need my whole library with me. I barely listen or watch the stuff that I do carry around. I walk around with 8 albums and 2 movies...that's more than enough.
I've seen alot of people lose their music going from one computer to the next or upgrading devices. Dealing with .mp3's & .avi's, I don't have this issue.
Eventhough the iPhone is straight forward, to me it seems more complicated. Dealing with flashing ROMs or Radios and white screen and bootup screens to me is easy. I know what to expect, I know how to fix and it gives me an escape from the wife.
Hope you enjoyed my story....I will not get an iPhone.
I'll let my wife be the guinea pig
I got both initially. Returned the iPhone and was embarrassed I'd ever wondered which to get. While sleek, it's far slower (data speed) and has far fewer functional capabilities. I have faith it will eventually be an amazing device (version 2 or 3), but I thought of it as a Paris Hilton type girlfriend. It will be fun to look at and play with for about a month. When you really have to start interacting with it long-term you'll find out it's mostly style and not much substance. Perfect phone for teenagers and people with no responsibilities.
BTW - I've had for more girls chat me up over my Kaiser than I did with the iPhone...mostly because iPhones are relatively widespread here now.

I guess he is wondering whether the iPhone might be an upgrade over the Kaiser?
I would suggesting waiting until around the middle of the year and get the 3G iphone, i had a iphone and i took it back just based on the fact the data was too slow but other than that it was perfect.
just my 5 cents...
I was seriously considering replacing my vario III with N95 8gigs ... but thank You Lord!! I found my common sense once more... symbian.. never more.
iphone?
as someone wise once said... are You watching movies all day? do You really need to put more than one of Yer greasy fingers on Yer screen at a time to feel better? ....... any other pros?
look pal... I don't want to convince You that tytn II is the best toy ever, but all I can say is, that You certainly won't find better swiss army knife of pocket computing. period.

# 3 is wrong. If you unlock your phone all you need to do is virginize it BEFORE updating your firmware.
# 4 WRONG! You can sync with outlook and do so wirelessly!
# 5 is wrong. I have my plan based on my Tilt and switch SIMs regularly. You lose visual voicemail but gain the ability to use MMS with the Swirly MMS 3rd party app.
# 7 is why the iPhone has 3x's the battery life of my Tilt.
My pros and cons based on using both daily:
iPhone Pros:
1) Sleek design. Better for me during the summer to take than have a brick on my hip.
2) Safari is the best browser out. End of discussion on browsers.
3) Once jailbroken your phone can have MMS, VoIP, Video Record, and a TON of awesome apps you wont see on WM6.*
4) Graphically better looking and easy to mod
5) Faster UI. Apps run a lot faster starting. NO soft resets needed UNLESS a new app fresh out has some bugs..just like ANY beta.
iPhone Cons:
1) No ability to receive MMS yet, though the developer of Swirly MMS is working to fix this
2) No GPS, but someone has already made a GPS device that plugs into the iPhone and does work! Not ready to be released yet.
3) Video Record has no sound. Sh!tty app release IMO.
4) No QWERTY.
The iPhone is an awesome phone, just incomplete IMO. That's why I use both. Situation dictates device for me.
For me, the iPhone is missing too much - 3G, Bluetooth stereo, Exchange sync, video recording, voice dialing and (perhaps most importantly) the ability to tweak and customize to my heart's content.
However, I got one for my wife for Christmas, and for her it's the perfect device - something that "just works" and doesn't require daily maintenance, hacks and 3d-party replacement programs just to make it useable. I tried several times in the past to get her to use Palm/WM devices, and they always ended up in a drawer after a couple of weeks. The iPhone, on the other hand, is her constant companion.
If they eventually implement most or all of the missing features I listed above, I'll seriously consider getting one. It really is an amazing device with great hardware and a GUI that's leagues ahead of anything else on the market.
i just like my Universal and Blueangel. I have already burnt mah fingers twice by choosing imac.
Check out iphone and you will forget your WM bricks, i bet

Oh, ok then. All the detailed arguments didn't sway me, but since you called my phone a brick I'm convinced.
After the launch of SDK, iPhone will be a totally different device.. Imagine a WM with no 3rd Party Software/mods installed.
All of my previous WM devies had new kind of problems. Some had touch screen alignment problem, random muting, even these 400mhz processors are hell slow.
Im not saying that iPhones are perfect devices but alteast are better than these PPCs.
I own a Kaiser and an iPhone.
I'm a cooker, and you will see in my signature my work. I like to tweak, mod etc... I also own an unlimited internet HSDPA connection.
Therefore I prefer the iPhone.
It don't own a GPS, but I don't use it eveyday! (for this, I use the Kaiser or my Asus 620BT)
-The display drivers are crap on the Kaiser (everybody knows), they are wonderfull on the iPhone, you seems to have 3x more power.
-The camera is a little better on the iPhone (I can send same photos at the same time I took with the devices to compare)
-The screen is better on the iPhone (16/9 half-vga) and the colors are better (every photos or videos are improved on this device), iphone can play H264. if I put the same video on the Kaiser with TCPMP or CORE PLayer, I only see a slideshow
-the Multitouch is really good to slide/resize your photos.
-The touch is better on the iPhone (no need to push on the screen) this is a technology patented by Apple.
-Safari (the web brower) is better than any other brower on WinMo (better than Opera Mini wich is for me the best). Even Maps wich display better than googleMaps ans all other app (dialer, sms, calendar with wheel etc).
-The antenna Wifi is better on the iPhone too.
Well (for me) everything is better on the iPhone, the only regret is the speed while I surf the internet (HSDPA is better than Edge) I can reach 1MB/S on the Kaiser.
For the Visio on the Kaiser: nobody can hear me clearly (when I am in a quiet environment), I need to shout on the mic, so the person can not see my face anymore. so it's unusable for me. I don't know if this issue is on all Kaiser (I own the french Vodafone SFR rom).
the MP3 player is better on the iPhone (I use Shure E2C (99$ headset) on both devices), the quality is far better. and I prefer to navigate using the iPhone.
I like to share the internet connexion on the Kaiser but I can do it on the iPhone too, but as I said it's faster on the Kaiser...
Someone put the price of the iPhone as "CON" but the Kaiser come with 128MB and the iPhone with 8GB...
In fact, I think it depend of what you need, you will prefer the kaiser or the iPhone. I read someone hates Apple,ok, but I hate HTC for not doing a better 3D display driver like the other 8000+ persons who have signed the petition.
At least Apple provided good drivers and a fast device
agreed with gibs.. U just explained it better
I'd get a fake iphone from china, apparently some have "windows mobile" on them
and then u will have a fake device with a buggy OS.. 2 in 1
Having discussed the Diamond with my mate Mark, (he got his from inkino on Friday) I realised that theres no thread by/for people who think its perfect, so I has gotten the impression that it was not that good from all the bad threads (wifi is crap, no gps connection, sms problems etc.).
So, if you think the Diamond is great, please post here, so all us guys without them can get a balanced opinion. And say if youre using a cooked rom, or have applied tweaks or something.

I got it on Thursday, not Friday.
I just haven't experienced any of the problems that others are reporting apart from the battery heating up when charging off a computer. The battery life is fine (I haven't got below 71%, despite taking it on several day-long adventures), the GPS is good, and TouchFLO 3D is at least twice as fast as TouchFLO. The screen is also more responsive and the detail on it is simply amazing. Wifi seems fine, the accelerometer is really handy, and I have far more RAM and storage space than I need.
There are other great hidden extras too, like the good startup speed. Nobody seems to mention that.
I was worried like you as well because of all the threads .
Battery
Took off charger this morning at 8am its now 20:37 and Im at 60% .. Have had several calls and text messages , have used wifi and GPS with TomTom without charger -- short journey.. Pretty much your average day really.
This is the 3rd charge and each time there is in an improvement.
The size is excellent , not too small and not to big. The screen is second to non . Excellent in and outdoors.
The speed is great . The lag on the menu system I personally think is ment to be there as it fades your last screen out but its like 1 second !! I can live with that
memory is a bit disapointing but I have installed all my apps on the HDD and all run very quickly etc.
Battery does get warm under charge but then most batteries do as they peak ..
Hmm not sure what else to right so will leave it there
batery life is really su*. i thought atom life shuld be a worst. but great diamond got 1st place.
What's up with your battery? I've never used more than 29% of mine, despite subjecting the device to reasonable use for an entire day between each charge. Maybe your battery is dodgy.
Mine's Great
Battery life - came off charge at 04:00 a.m. - taken/ made about 20 mins of calls,
Calls are crisp and clear both ends
Speaker is a bit tinny but passable on something this small
Camera is passable
push email on all day,
Took 3 contact photos
about 1 hour of wifi (50/50 you tube and browsing net, note that I had wifi on the best performance setting).
TF3D is responsive and easy to use
GPS (I only use google earth) is quick and accurate
Device is incredibly light and thin considering what is packed inside it
Only slight negative is some memory leakage (about 10Mb over 24 hrs after which it seems to stabilise) although I should stress that this has never resulted in any noticeable slow down.
I have ROM 1.35 no tweaks
The last phone that impresed me this much was my very first WM device - the imate Jam
IMHO - nothing comes close to the Diamond -
but then, one man's meat............
Oops forgot to mention
ref previous post, battery on 40% at 09:29 p.m 17 hours after last charge
only got it for about a week.
Development of ROMS seems to be going fast like hell
1.37 rom is great
tflo3d very fast, no hangs, no bugs, fantastic usage of phone
gmailaccount in mail nice downloading every 15 min
work:
synching exchange via vpn twice a day
oggsyncing google calendar with device calendar twice a day, so all calenders are synched. Contacts are in exchange too, usefull.
GPS works like a charm, opera rocks, I really like the 'zoom' function.
Phonekeyboard goes perfect when smssing.
Battery is quite perfect, holds on more than a day with 1 hour of calltime, 20 min of gps and fiddling around a lot.
And well, like I had with all WM phones, they work great with my Parrot.
In fact, I got everything that I need in this device.
And, as mentioned at first: development is going way fast, so it can only get BETTER

You must be kidding, right? The HTC Touch Diamond ist very likely the best WM6.1 device made by HTC so far BUT it is by far away from being perfect, not even close to it.
Yes, I like using it (ROM 1.37.707.1) but Touchflo3D sucks performance-wise(or is it the crappy touchdisplay implementation compared to the iPhone) but it looks very very nice, so does the Touch Diamond itself.
Reception isn't too good too, pretty weak in fact, especially HSDPA reception.
Call reception(voice on the other end) is very good though.
I have very mixed feelings about the Touch Diamond. While it may be one(if not THE) best WM device on the market(the Samsung i780 is more powerful), it is NOT the best (smart)phone on the market. It looks beautiful, nicer than an iPhone for example and it is well built but again, this isn't everything which is important for a good phone.
So if you want to run a thread with glorifying the Touch Diamond, do so. Don't expect however people like me who are using a good dozend of new phones at the same time to agree with your opinion(proposal).
The Touch Diamond is a nice phone, no doubt about it. Perfect? NO WAY, not even close, sorry to disappoint you.

Best Windows Mobile phone? Maybe. Best phone? I highly doubt it.
Best 4 Me
I have tried Iphone, Nokia N95 Sony Ericcson, LG KU990. For me, none of them are a patch on the WM phones and of those, the Diamond is the best I have had so far. It comes down to a matter of personal preference at the end of the day.
Some will love a given device, others will find it "so-so" others will hate it. Take the iphone for example: I have a friend who swears by his, myself who thinks it is OK but prefers WM and another friend who sent hers back after a week because she couldn't get on with it (problem with fingernails not working on the touch screen!)

Bro.....that is so true
Right heres my opinion on the Diamond...
Ive had mine since Sat...didnt have much of a chance to play around with it thanks to the battery dying out...my fault really as i didnt charge it fully but nevermind and i also blame my gf who was desperate to see me so i left the usb cable at home...so the battery drained and i couldnt use it till yesterday when i got home and put it on charge.
Anyways my first impressions were that its a bloody nice phone, small and thin...in fact even my bro was impressed with it. But i wasnt that impressed with the performance Touchflo3d was slow and laggy...remember ive got the official uk diamond which runs 1.37 rom stock. So i wasnt that impressed with the performance etc but after doing some of the tweaks in the tweak thread...OMG!!!! this device really started to shine...it was much more snappier and responsive, well alot more than without the tweaks...still wouldnt say its perfect though but given time im pretty sure the guys in here can sort out alot of the minor issues.
I like the phone, the more i use it the more i fall in love with it so originally i was thinking of sending it back today for a refund but to be honest??...nope im keeping it...its a brilliant device if you can live with the niggles/quirks it has. Im coming from a symbian phone, nokia n95 8gb and this phone is as good as that one although ill be honest...there are a few things that i miss from that phone but the way i see it is that its a learning curve for me.
The only major issue i have with the phone is the battery, it far too weak for this sort of device...god only knows why HTC didnt pack a higher capacity battery...yes yes i know there will be soon extended batts for the Diamond but really it should have come with a higher capacity battery. The thing is that this device is quite powerful so HTC really dont have an excuse other than to make more money.
Really other than that im liking the phone alot...i think it has alot to offer..its just a case of HTC tweaking their roms or the devs in here doing their thing with the roms available. I never thought id be saying all that above about a WM device...i did have a WM5 device a few yrs ago but god almighty that was just simply rubbish...at least WM6.1 has come a long way since 5 in my opinion.
Hi all,
This is my first post on xda-developers. I've also come from an S60 background and in fact have modded/helped build the community at n95users<dot>com for over a year. This is my first WM device since the IPAQ 5550, back when we only dreamed of our PDA's being able to make phone calls, even when HP put that little SIM card slot that did not work in the back of the 5550 - as if it were a taste of things to come. But anyway, enough nostalgia - Symbian is behind me now, at least for a while. Here is what I think about the diamond.
For those that might be considering the purchase, I don't think you will be disappointed. This device does pack a pretty serious punch, but it also lacks in a few areas. Let's not try and flog a dead horse, but yes the battery is sub-par and not suitable for this device. After owning an N95 I feel as if I can't get the device I want without having to compromise on the damn battery. That aside the Diamond does indeed shine and probably sparkles in the right light. The screen is nothing short of blowing me away every time I look at it, the GPS is super sensitive (I'm locking on to 12 satellites in about 15-20 seconds, and TomTom 7 runs amazingly), and the touchFLO 3D interface is nice but is also functional. It can be jerky at times but unless I'm mistakened, I do believe this can be fixed with some software optimisations and some registry tweaks I'm going to try once I finish writing this. I start a new job shortly and we'll be using Exchange (bye bye Lotus Notes ) so I'm looking forward to testing push email functionality and other productivity features. The web browsing experience is GREAT, and the readability of web pages on the 640x480 screen seriously blows me away. In fact I'd have to say so far I guess the screen has impressed me most - I don't think I will ever get tired of looking at it, and I will NEVER own anything from here on in that has anything less in that department. There really is no going back. Running a remote desktop session at 640x480 in my hand is a real treat!! If only it would support the accelerometer and let me flip it to landscape mode... The YouTube client is great (bit slow though? - or is that the memory leak I wonder) and the scrolling little menus and being able to do most things with the swipe of my thumb is something that is growing on me very fast. All in all I wouldn't hesitate recommending this device to anyone who uses it in a similar fashion to me, and I'm doing new things with it everyday!
Here are some things I would have liked to sweeten the deal:
- A flash for the camera.
- 3.5mm headphone jack, or at least an adapter in the box!
- More powerful battery...
Unless any of the above is a deal breaker for you, and all but the flash can be worked around, or fixed, then I would not hesitate in getting the diamond if you are that close to a decision, but don't expect it to be perfect, because nothing is!!!!
Thanks for recommending, I've order mine geting it tommorow.
Am coming from N95 8GIG. For my next smartphone i just couldn't be bother with N96 with same old QVGA.
Looking forward to my new toy.

Ahhhh, that brings back memories! I remember selling my h3970 and paying an arm and a leg for the h5550. It sure was a glimpse of things to come.
Ok, the first thing that caught my eye, was how sexy it was, I was so in love. Wanted it, got it. If that could only work on all the women I love at first sight.
Anyhow, after getting to know the Diamond I found small issues, but no one is perfect so I looked past them. Plus when I take my Diamond out, all eyes are on us. I upgraded her (thanks to Dutty), freed her (unlocked),and even tweaked her (double meaning to keep this theme going).
So why do I still wanna get rid of her, all my ex(s) were Sony Ericssons....and they were all so simple, but not as sexy. My Diamond is the total opposite from what I'm use to, but that' not the problem, the Diamond is getting to complex for my simple brain. There's only so many tweaks I can do to the thing, I have to just realize that maybe this relationship just isn't working out.
Can I get a witness?
Where did you get your charging cradle?
word up... from 3 sonys to diamond and i can't find enough tweaks to get it to work half as good as any of my old sonys
I think one has to have a love hate relationship with most gadgets....if its simple to use, its not customizable enough and if its customizable, you are never quite happy with its current state
Zoolake is totally right.. I customize mine all the time.. Atleast one ROM-update a week.. This ROM doesn't have what I'm looking for, that ROMs perfect, but doesn't have that.. This phone is just uber amazing, extremely satisfying, but somehow.. Yet somehow it's just missing it's simplicity..
I also moved up from an Ericsson.. Damn, that thing was good.. But she's way better, my Diamond.. but somehow.. I don't know.. You know what I'm talkin' about, right?
I'm glad I'm not alone here, thought it was me. Only question is where the hell do I go from here? Xperia? Are all Window 6.1 phones as allergic to simplicity?
Great post!
I've said the same thing about my Diamond since I got it over a month ago.. "Love/Hate relationship". I posted a rant about the Diamond on this forum and others after I got it, and I wanted to throw it away. I went back to my old trusty HTC Touch for a few weeks, but then returned to the Diamond after the New Year. Now I've gotten used to the Diamond and its little issues, and have learned to live with it.
The only problems I still have are -
Sometimes I push the wrong button accidentally when I want to press Left or Right direction ... but I get it right 95% of the time now
TFLO3D is slow and choppy when sliding through tabs (TFLO2D on my Touch was way smoother and faster).. but this is not a big deal
Battery drains like crazy, can't get through an entire day of moderate use. But can be solved by turning off 3G and using Edge instead; and also I'm receiving the official HTC extended battery soon.
Scroll feature (e.g. for zooming in Opera Mobile) doesn't work all the time.. On the same program it sometimes works, and sometimes it stops working.
Form factor (too tall) - Still trying to get used to it, especially for typing, because my original HTC Touch was perfect size!
The biggest pluses for me are:
VGA screen - great for viewing webpages and spreadsheets
Built-in GPS - wasn't working with iGuidance until I ran GpsGate first.. and also disabled Data (I later created a Mortscript that runs/closes GpsGate with iGuidance automatically for me now)
FM Radio!
I think after a while you will get used to it. The Diamond packs so many features into a tiny size, which is the great thing about it.
Ditto on all this stuff. You guys are not alone. I actually loved and hated my Diamond so much that I sold it and then bought another one about 3 weeks later because I missed it too much!!
I basically tolerate its shortcomings for all the stuff I love about it. Ideally, give me the Diamond's specs in the Touch's body and I'd be mega happy.
There's got to be another phone better, do any of the newer HTCs perform any better?
Tbh I felt like this as well from my old Elfin (with Dsixda's ROM ).
BUT, just flash udK's Beta 8 which is super smooth TF3D, battery life WITH 3G lasted me a day easily (approx. 18 hours) with 20% battery left.
If that isn't enough then flash the radio in my sig, ending with .08.
Everything is perfect. Now all I want is WM6.5, hehe.
Dutty's v3.6b is pretty good, speakerphone still sucks, for example is ROM: udK Syrius HD R0 Beta 8 better???? Let the drama begin.
surely this overcomplicated feature (and i agree with you) is down to owning a winmo, and not anything to do with the diamond.
Yes, the phones complicated, if you want it to be. Use it as a phone only (ie just touchflo) and its absoutely fine ! its a normal phone (apart from the standby/lock issue).
Its only when you tinker with windows and apps that suddenly it becomes complicated, but thats the nature of the best. TBH its WHY i bought a smartphone, but yes, i now find it a minefield of tweaks and apps. But, i love it !! i 've never used a phone so much for so long after i bought it. Normally, it'd just sit on my desk. This one i find myself picking it up at least once an hour to mess about with it.
For the last ten years i've just owned a phone. Now, i own something else.

Try it. I've tried around 15-20 ROMs and this leads by example. I think it's using the ROM base from Iolite, which seems better to me than even the latest 2.03 base, since the battery life with this is just amazing, while TF3D couldn't be smoother.
hey Dsi nice to see you in diamond forum i loved your rom for elf i still run it and its perfect thanks again for it, so one question can u post a short how-to to fix that gps isue wich moust of us have ? thanks a lot
..
Hey i read dsixda's rant when he had posted it and being that i trust his comments i stayed away from the diamond until the very day my elfin got upset and fumbled out of my hand into a puddle, just as i was walkin into the rogers plus store to pay my bill. needed a phone so picked up the diamond...hated her for a bit but molded her into my own perfect device...i still dont think she's better than my elfin but she's a damn good rebound lol
So in the end......we ended up breaking up. No more Diamond....I have mixed emotions about it, but you can be damn sure my next baby is going to be hot as hell. Maybe the SE Xperia, or Asus P835. Really hope that all Window Mobile 6.1 devices are not as complex as my last.
i use 6 months before i decided to change from SE K810i to diamond. well, k810i served me good especially the cybershot as i'm quite picture snappy and take a lot of picture. not to mention all java games i've downloaded. heck, until now i havent try all games i have.
i've been using 2 pda before, iPaq rx1700 and after that dell axim x50v and i must say that bringing 2 gadget is quite unfriendly most of the time.
i'm sacrificing the camera for functionality when i went to diamond.
sometimes when i want to take picture, k810i is way much better. you just slide down the camera cover and then snap. when with diamond, you need to on, go to camera and the wait to load.... damn...
still missing my k810i though....
Well guys... the time has come for me to move on. I recently got a 32gb Iphone 3GS last week and love it! The main reason I moved to it was for its speed and incredible improvements in features over the 3G, as well as the amazing touchscreen keyboard. I really had wanted to go with the Touch Pro 2 for AT&T, but could not wait till October for the release. Also, I had a chance to try out the TMobile version of the Touch Pro 2, but was a little let down by it. I expected it to be much better from all the rumors surrounding it on the web, but it wasn't. I was hoping the VGA resolution and wider screen would make the all new touchdscreen keyboard on the TP2 as good as the Iphone, but it wasn't very accurate. I loved the hardware keypad buttons my Kaiser, but since the TP2 doesn't have those and is full touchscreen unless the keyboard is slid out, I figured I might as well get the Iphone since it's a touchscreen as well. The TP2 seemed a little slow compared to what I thought it would be from the online reviews. The slide out keypad was very nice, and much better than our Kaiser's. Another thing that WM doesn't have which is why I switched to the Iphone, is its Facebook app with chat. I use Facebook at work daily, and love the ability to be able to see who's online on my phone. I had been under the belief that I would always stick with Windows Mobile since it is so customizable. I loved my HTC Kaiser, which I successfully converted from a Tilt to a TyTN II by changing the housing and adding the front camera. I am truly amazed at how much I learned about this device since I joined this forum, from flashing custom roms, to changing registry settings, and configuration settings to make the device work even better. Before this forum, my Tilt was a joke since it was so slow. Now, it's amazingly fast, and very functional.
Basically, I just wanted to thank all the members on this forum who helped me whenever I had any problems. All of you were so helpful and were quick to respond. I also wanted to thank all the chefs and developers who put all their hard work in to making those custom roms for free, and updating them frequently. I really enjoyed the WM 6.5 releases you guys created, even though it isn't officially out . Lol.
My Tilt has been the first phone that I have owned that I still truly love, even after getting a new Iphone. I will be attending Cal Poly University in a few weeks, majoring in Electrical Engineering, and plan to bring my Tilt with me. I still browse this forum almost daily, since the developments, along with the members, are just great. I plan to still update my Tilt with new roms that come along, since it just seems wrong not to, and is something I have been doing forever. I am not truly leaving this forum, just won't be here as often since I have a new daily device. I will still be around here though to offer help to people who have problems or need advice.
Anyways, sorry for the long post, but just wanted to thank everyone, instead of just basically leaving on a bad note saying WM sucks. I believe it can only improve, and can't wait to see what lies ahead for it. Thanks again.

And good luck "you'll need it" JK
I'm so on the edge as well....have the Tilt all modded out, and want the Touch Pro 2, but I keep seeing my brother doing all this stuff on his iphone and so I've been looking for an unlocked used one to try out on T-mobile. If the TP2 wasn't $350 bucks!!! I'd already have it....

I too went to the Iphone. Sigh
Thanks for the positive comments left by the few of you that did. I am in no way biased toward the Iphone, nor WM, I just appreciate a fine device, regardless of its make. For those of you that have criticized the Iphone, I ask you this, "Have you even tried the new 3GS out yourself, or are you just basing your opinion on responses from other people?" Before the 3GS, I never would have considered the Iphone, since it's features really weren't that great. The 3GS has some amazing features, that truly swayed me. There are just some things that truly make the Iphone better. I was sick of not being able to do what friends of mine were able to do with there older Iphones, like Facebook chat, as well as get some of the amazing apps available from the app store. The 3MP camera with autofocus is truly amazing! Also the amount of storage space on the phone is truly great. For me, I own a MacBook Pro, so switching to the Iphone made compatibility between the two much easier. Not here to criticize devices, just here to clear up some misconceptions about them.

Good luck. The 3G is pretty good, but for me, the 3GS was the only model that was actually an upgrade for me from the Tilt. I love taking pictures and videos, so getting a basic 3G would have been a downgrade due to a lower MP camera, and no video recording. Not to mention that the 3G can't do tethering, unless it is jail broken I believe. Plus the 3GS is twice as fast!

If you really think that this thing is going to take decent pictures and video for you, you are going to be sadly disappointed. I went to a wedding yesterday with my 3Gs 16GB Black, the camera is great outdoors with natural light in ideal settings, but so is my " dollar store " keychain digital camera. Inside in appropriate wedding lighting, it was useless.
Aside from that , what do you have A.D.D. ? Chumley Ex and I both have Tilts and 3Gs' , we haven't said goodbye. It's like being married and having a girlfriend on the side , can't you do both ?
I am a loyal Tilt-er (for the past two years), and I just tried out a 3GS this weekend to see what all the fuss was about.
It is a beautiful machine, but there are several things that I still find inferior to the Tilt:
1. Soft keyboard makes typing long messages difficult.
2. Can't sync POP properly. I can delete messages off the server from my phone, but when I delete messages off the server and I've already downloaded them to my phone, they stay on my phone. Tilt handles that and keeps all POP inboxes synced to the server.
3. Switching between email accounts is incredibly tedious and time-consuming, having to back out of one and then go into another, especially if you have many folders.
4. Still no GPS app with text-to-speech for street names.
5. Horrendous battery life.
Did I miss anything? Am I wrong about any of these? I do like the iPhone, but it doesn't feel like I'll be productive enough. Thoughts? Thanks.

Easyy, TP2 (would be) around $1200 in here.. =)))
Wish you a happy life with your iPhone.
hey.. Where can I find "all" those tricks to get my Kaiser faster btw? There's not a general topic saying "get it fast" and and I can't make a accurate search since I don't know what makes it faster?
quite off topic.. hope someone can tolerate and help =)
bye mate =)

Tilt is bulky and slow compared.
Tilt music and video play back suck, if you can get video working at all
Internet access and browsing is slow and clunky compared.
Can't play my DRM itunes library on Tilt.
Tilt can be "fixed" for all of this , but 3Gs out of the box does it all,
Both your list and mine go on and on, which is why I have both.
The cool thing about the tilt was that 2 years ago it did pretty much everything the newer iphone do now. When the tilt hit the stands the iphone was only edge, it had no gps etc.
The tilt can go to all the nice flash pr0n site, the iphone only gets one.
the iphone is smooth and it just feels like something from the future.
