This is my first experience with a Windows Mobile device.
I just installed L26 WM 6.1 Professional WWE V6a ROM (CE OS 5.2.19170 (Build 19170.1.0.0)), which comes with R 1.58.26.20 radio.
What I notice is that the WiFi reception of my Kaiser is too weak. In spots where laptops show weak signal, but still connect reliably, this thing cannot connect al all. At home, where it detects a strong signal, it drops the connection avery hour, or so and the only way to reconnect is to turn off - turn on the WiFi.
If this normal for these devices, or I am having some kind of problem. If you think I have a problem - any suggestions how to fix it?
Yeah it's common. The Tilt doesn't have a dedicated antenna like your laptop does. Most of them have an antenna routed around your LCD screen.
Can something be done to improve the WiFi reception? Some registry thack?
Go to WiFi power mode and select "Best performance" did the trick for me though the already power hungry tilt will get oven more hungry :-(
There is a setting that can adjust the amount of battery life consumed by the WiFi. I'm not sure if its related to the bandwith it uses or the extent to which it tries to find a signal. I tried it out in the hospital and the connection strength didn't change from the lowest->highest setting.
I'm sure there is something to be done on the software side though.
I set the WiFi power mode to "Best Performance". I don't notice improvement in the strenght of signal. But now the battery dosn't last even 8 hours in sleep mode. I leave my Tilt fully charged in the evening and in the morning it is dead.

Disable the wifi when not in use.
May I ask what you WiFi while you sleep - LOL
Switch services OFF when not needed (as the poster before said).
OT:
If you want superb battery live for example use 3G only "when needed" (internet, wireless modem). Install Chi-Tai's battery status tool and enable the the feature to see how much power is drawn from the battery. You will be amazed how much you can conserve by setting things up right even by changing the order of program load at startup... My idle comes down to 53-72 mA and I have not drainage problem anymore (at least for now :-()
WIFI very poor
I gave off my HTC P3600(Trinity) and purchased a TyTN II(Kaisar) in the hope of getting better options, particularly on WIFI. I was disappointed and I think Trinity is even better in handling WIFI. TyTN II could hardly detect a WIFI signal and when it does it always drop off. Has anyone had a similar problem and got a solution? Please share and help!!!!!
WiFi on Kaiser AT&T Tilt is weak
My Kaiser / AT&T Tilt has poor WiFi reception, even when on Best Performance.
My former Hermes 8525 was somewhat better. I am on this forum looking for a cure, like you.
Wow, Shocking! A Device with out a dedicated antenna doesn't get as good of reception as a Laptop.

I am sometimes in areas where there is no cell phone service. During the weeks to months that i am in these areas, i have pretty constant WiFi access. I would like to be able to disable my cellular radio and have WiFi take the place of it, allowing my Tilt to receive push email and instant messages and skype phone calls like it does when it is connected to the cellular network.
Unfortunately, it seems that wifi is turned off when the device sleeps. How can i avoid this? The only thing i've thought of is to stop the device from sleeping automaticly, and just have the screen turn off and the device lock. The problem with this is that i have to be careful to never hit the power button.
Are there any other things i should know in order to get wifi to replace cellular (with the exception of cellular voice and SMS obviously)?
If you have skype connected at all times, then the "prevent device standby mode when online" will help. Its the 4th option under Menu -> Settings. This is enabled by default.
This topic has been discussed many times.
There is an option available in 'Kaiser Tweaks' to keep WiFi enabled but will drastically reduce your battery life if not on power/charge !
Farsquidge,
I'm embarrassed. I did a search, but obviously not a good enough one. Thanks so much. I did not have the newest Kaiser Tweak update.
I'll disable the cell radio when out of range, how much more juice does the wifi radio use?

I don't have any exact figures for that as I have never used the option but if you disable the phone then it may not be so bad. See what you get out of it yourself and post back here for others.
When on wifi my kaiser seems to loose the signal and picks it up again.
its just going on and off.
No problem with the routersignal all wireless computers work fine.

Have you put the slider to best performance rather than best battery?
Yes i did
never had the problem with the tytn and wizard.
I only get that on my TyTN II when I'm far away from the router and the signal strength is low. If you've already set the performance vs battery life slider to give maximum performance as suggested by kareem9nba and it's still behaving as reported, what happens when you're near to the router?
If it's just that your saying the range isn't as good as youve been used to with other devices, I have nothing to compare my TyTN II with as this is my first WiFi capable ppc - but I'm sure other more experienced members here will be able to comment. If you're near to the router where there's no doubt it should be working fine and still getting problems then thats a different matter.
maybe your router needs a restart or maybe its just faulty.
have you tried other devices with same router?
try a wifi sniffer/scanner see what happens (a good example would be PeekPocket)

I do! My Kaiser's performance is on a par with my old HTC Universal, which is to say, they are both terrible at getting a signal. I don't think my Kaiser is faulty as back in the Universal forums, it was often commented how useless the WiFi was in comparison to other machines. I used to have a HP Ipaq 5450 which could get a signal upto approx 20m from my router, my laptop starts struggling at around 50m. The Universal could just about get a signal upto 4m away, the Kaiser is no better.
I realise much of this is due router location and the fact that I was trying to get WiFi in my garage, but in my bedroom with a full signal on the laptop, the HTC devices struggle to get more than 1 bar and if I move 10cm further away from the router the signal goes completely.
I think the WiFi on the Universal and the Kaiser just isn't that powerful. I guess it's Maximum Performance setting is still quite low power in order to save battery life. Wonder if there is a registry tweek to increase the power to the WiFi card, and if doing that would blow the card?!

I'm using an 11 Mbps Wifi capable router (about 2003 vintage) and even with a wall and a floor between my TyTN II and the router it still works about 15 m away, I've yet to try any further as that'd be outside the house. I was impressed to see it even detected other WiFi sources in the area though. I found that even though the signal quality bar was fluctuating, my web browsing still worked OK. Bumping the slider towards the performance end did make a difference to the signal quality indicator (although it still fluctuated). If your TyTN II is only working up to 4 m from your router then I think there's a fault with either device, you should be getting better than that.
I can connect to my linksys WRT54G when beside the it and 20mt away. Even when beside it the TynII will cycle off (disconnect) and then reconnect again. I thought it was signal strength but I am beginning to think its just a crappy wifi setup on the tyn. I also have my slider on best performance.

Funny that, so am I! However I bought it because it was cheap and I really didn't know much about WiFi etc several years ago when I bought it. I notice many routers come with external antenna's, mine is all internal so I would think that it's more my router isn't that powerful, combined with the Kaiser having a less powerful WiFi set-up that older models. To be fair, the Ipaq had an external antenna (of sorts, a little lump on top) and my previous laptops didn't have built in WiFi, their external WiFi adaptors also had external antenna's.
Frankly I think that all this internalisation of components is having a negative impact on signal strength and range. To compare I have a GSM car kit with an external antenna that picks up a much better signal than a phone on it's own. Likewise my GPS can be connected to an external antenna and I've noticed when connected it will pick up more satalites, with a stronger lock, than when on it's built in antenna. It also picks up more than the Kaiser (internal antenna) or Universal (external bluetooth GPS with internal antenna) ever do.
Still, it all just about works for my needs, so I'm going to leave well alone!

But does this actually affect your browsing? In the end the signal quality bar can do whatever it wants as long as the data still gets through as far as I'm concerned and for me that’s happening. My hunch is that the reason why the signal quality bar intermittently dips down (even when nearby a router) is associated with power management on the TyTN II (which will still be in place to a certain degree even when the performance vs. battery life slider is fully at the performance end).

really i can't connect to my wifi router, while other hardware can (a laptop for example). it loops from "connecting" to "available" with 5 bars. but nevers connect or never shows an error. i tried open, WEP, WPA, WPA2 with no results... its a compatibility problem of TYTN II with some routers....
i hope that upgrading firmware, this problem dissapear....
Hi
My experience isn't that the signal itself is particlarly poor, but that it can be prone to loose connection regularly if its very weak. Atm I'm sitting some 150m from the accesspoint (quite powerfull transmitter), through a couple of concrete walls and its fast, as in almost so fast as the Kaiser can chew. Livestreaming from Youtube is np etc. The signal is no doubt very poor tho, and I have to use max signal/minimum battery on that bar you can adjust.
What drives me nuts is that it DCs me and often force me to key in the network key randomly every 1 to 20mins or so. I don't know if this is due to weak signal (both my laptop and the kaiser have 1 bar) or config of the wlan/kaiser. The PC dont DC, but its deffo a cranky connection. It almost seems like theres some auto-DC feature somewhere.
On other networks I haven't seen this. Generally I find the Kaiser wlan surprisingly powerfull, albeit it often shows a weak signal I've found this to be very relative and far from always descriptive of real life performance.

kaiser wifi low signal - wi fi poor reception - wifi disconnecting and reconnecting:
Suffered a lot with my kaiser wifi poor reception. Tested several radio versions and could solve the problem.
Radio version:
1 71 09 01 - too low WIFI reception
1.27.12.11 - disconnecting and turning OFF the WIFI with no automatic reengage of the access point or turning ON the WIFI if coverage is good.
1.65.17.56 is the versione that SOLVED my problem.
This radio was collected from the original HTC shipped rom:
RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_3.28.405.0_radio_sign_25.83.40.02_1.65.17.56_Ship.exe
In this moment I am running Radio 1.65.17.56 with
ROM jjblaster3 - updated 28014 with good WIFI behaviour.
I need to underline that the reception I have now with the Kaiser, can never reach the sensibility of my Nokia 5530 WIFI or the one I have on my laptop with good antenna embeded in my LCD framem but I am happy now because the WIFI is making sense now.
Best Regards

I'm facing the same problem. WiFi worked fine and one day it was suddenly gone. Tried quite a few radios, including 1.65.17.56 and still no deal.
To elaborate, when WiFi is turned on, the icon never even comes up in the taskbar, and it continues to remain in an off state (when checked in wifi settings) even when it's turned on (in the comm manager).
I'm guessing this could be a hardware problem like a loose contact to the antenna? Anyone heard of such issues?
(On a side note, the phone function never worked either, I always got a "No Service")
I've fixed it! I believe the problem was indeed a loose antenna. I opened up my phone and removed the antenna peice (the plastic plate that also houses the speaker) and pushed up the two pins left of the camera (so that they'll have better contact with the antenna piece. Put everything back and now the WiFi works!
Now if only I can figure out why the cellular doesn't work..
Dear all,
With a small 900mAh battery, What is the real world usage time? I mean making up to 2 hours of calls per day does it last at least 12hours before the need to recharge battery and this is assuming that 3G is on all the time. Thanks.
French network technical support say 60 hours with GPS on !!!!
I think it's joke.
Well, I've been watching the battery life on mine for a couple of days now in a reasonably scientific way and here are the early rather speculative results:
With just GPRS and nothing else on and very light use the battery drops from 100% to 80% very fast - less than an hour of light use.
Leaving it running on these settings will run it down to about 20% by the end of the working day - the drain seems to ease off aftert he first sharp drop
Powering up wifi and music for short time doesn't seem to make much difference.
Turning 3G on also doesn't seem to make the difference you would expect either.
So basically I would feel the need to take a charger with me if I left the house for the day, which will probably mean that I have to send the thing back. I've seen the coolsmartphone video review and mine isn't performing anything like that one - I would say I am loosing charge at about twice the rate.
Now the only issues that could be at work here is that I live in a lousy reception area. But could this really make such a difference?
What I would find really useful is a list of other tweaks you can make to cut power use so I can try them out. But at the end of the day it's looking like too many compromises would be needed to make this thing practical for me.
Reception would make a reasonable difference if normal network messages are being sent/received (general scans of BCCH channels, authentication with the network) - i.e. the radio isnt being used for data/voice, and only to keep registered to the network. But during those times the rest of the phone would also be in low power mode, so i would say an absolute max of 5 to 10%.
It would make a significant difference if you are transmiting data/making calls in a low reception area. I would say easily upto 20%.
It sounds to me like if you plan to use the phone much at all during the day you need a second battery. Then that turns into the hassle of how to charge the second battery every night, and i bet the desktop stand can't charge a second battery
My conclusions exactly. Impractical to say the least.
The puzzle then is why my last phone, a Nokia E51 with a 1050 mAh battery, under the same conditions, managed to last 2-3 days?
Is WM6 really that much of a power grabber compared to S60?

Short answer - yes.
There's all these power saving features in new app processors like being able to leave the screen on while powering down the main CPU. You can use an interupt from the radio to wake up the processor etc.
Windows doesnt support half of these features, thats why find windows phones save all their power by turning the screen off. Other phones with screens just as big are alot less regimental about turning the screen off at any opertunity.
I was involved in a project once to design a smartphone and it was a really surprising how much difference there was between the windows version they suplied and an ARM version of linux.
I have HTC Touch Crouse and i have problems with battery (GPRS always on and Bluetooth) ... now with Diamond i have VERY BIG Problem. Battery Keeps less than one day ...
The experiment continues.
Disabling "GPRS auto attach" in Advanced Configuration Tool has made a big difference - still 90% after 6 hours now.
Now this is a surprise to me because I thought that you did this when you set the network seek to GSM only and not hunt for 3G. Or maybe I'm getting my GPRSs and GSMs mixed up...
Next step - leave this setting in place and turn push back on. Watch this space.
GSM digitises your voice and slots it into a time divided channel on a frequency, and marks it as voice. On the network side, it converts this back to voice and sends it on the PSTN network (for a landline call).
GPRS takes data you want to send and inserts it directly in the same time divided channel and marks it as data. On the network side the network transfers this onto the internet (or other network) through the GGSN (its essentially a router).
So GSM and GPRS use the same technology. Setting the phone to GSM only, just stops it connecting to 3g networks.
Anyway, when you turn your phone on, the tower tells it its capabilities eg GPRS. This give you a GPRS available icon. When you actually want to send data, you need to 'attach'. This is like logging into the network.
To do that you need to open a data channel and send your login details.
Normal phones will do that i.e. attach, and then go idle. The network will only log them off if they move to a new cell and do not reauthenticate.
Anyway, if you are not attached:
- When you send data, the phone will need to attach first (milliseconds delay) - unoticable.
- You will NOT have an IP address so incoming data can not reach you.
If you use pop3 with regular pull of email, it'll make less difference the more frequently you pull your email - because every time you do, the phone will attach.
If you use PUSH email, it'll make no difference because you have to remain attached (have an ip address) for push to work.
I'm sure most people didn't care to know all that but i'm sure some did!
Wow. Thanks. Impressive.
Let me try to summarise. With auto attach off the phone isn't trying to attach to the 3G network all the time which saves power. But it is also disconnected from GPRS and data networks. However this won't affect push email because it will attach when it needs to, ie when the network tells it that there is mail or I send something out. Is this right?
What about internet? Will the phone automatically attach to the data netowrks when I fire up Opera? Presumably to attach to 3G I will need to reset to automatically seek WCDMA.

You're still a bit confused i think. Ok on a phone you have voice or data. Data covers mail, internet, weather updates etc etc, voice covers phone calls.
There are two distinct protocols here, and we need to talk about them diferently...
GSM:
With GSM calls are sent over 1 timeslot and singalled as voice.
To make a call you need to have a signal, that takes a very short few messages which are sent every 20 minutes or so, or if you move around between towers. The Radio in the phone can do this all by itself without waking the phone up.
If you want to send ANY data (emails, internet, anything) you need to use GPRS. GPRS uses the same channels but inserts data into them instead of voice. Before you can send or receive any data you need to 'login' to the network. To login you need to actually open the channel and make a connection. Logging in is called 'ataching'. When you attach you get an IP address and the network can send stuff to you and u can send stuff to the network. Attaching needs to wake up the phone.
Once attached the phone can go into a sleep mode saving power, but any data send or received will wake up the phone.
UMTS/3G
UMTS is different in that everything is sent code divided. There is no 'login' or attach as such. In this mode all your voice gets converted to data and sent across.
---
With auto attach on:
If you use 3G mode, every time you switch between a 3G and GPRS area the phone will atach (GPRS) again, this will drain power.
Every time you move out of GPRS and come back into GPRS the phone will attach, even if you have nothing to send.
With autoattach off:
The phone will only attach if it has something to send AND is on GPRS (no 3G available or 3g turned off)
The upside is that you save power when you move between cells. The downside is that you can't receive any data from the network untill you decide to attach.
For push email for example you would never end up detaching as it would hold the connection open.
Anyway i hope that clear, but i'm quite sleepy so it might not make any sense lol
That makes sense to me. When I get my Touch Diamond, I'm definitely turning 'GPRS auto attach' off, because I don't think I need it on.
someone1234 that`s really useful info.I guess autoattach off is the best option for me too. WHEN the phone arrives.
Thanks again senior1234. I'm getting there. But this is more complex that I thought so I've gone back and checked what really makes a difference to the battery life.
The big difference for me is having the phone band set to GSM only (phone, options). Disabling auto attach makes a difference but not as much as I thought. I had changed both of them at the same time, thinking that they were more or less the same thing. Sorry folks. Very unscientific.
But if you feel like trying these bear in mind that I don't move between cells very much and have awful reception. I'll leave it to others to explain whether this is important.
HTC told me that with the screen on full brightness and phone turned on the GPS would only last about 2 hours befre the battery died, looks like we'll need the extended battery or several normal ones!

GSM will use alot less power, so that is whats definatly making the difference
Why? Well.. GSM uses time division, which means the phones in an area take turns 'speaks'/'listening' with the tower. This ensures that no two phones are talking at the same time, and the tower can 'hear' what was sent. Because of this the power the phone transmits with can be controlled to be just high enough for the tower to listen, but not too high as to waste battery.
The down side of this scheme is that even if a phone has nothing to 'say', the other phones will wait in case it does. This means you're wasting bandwidth - or time that could be used by another phone to send data. Bottom line, data throughput is slower!
With 3G, all phones can talk at the same time. The data they send is tagged with a code, so that the data doesnt get mixed up. The advantage here is no time is wasted waiting for phones that may have nothing to send. The down side is that you need to be 'talking' loud enough to 'talk' over other people sending. This is why the data rate over 3G drops off really rapidly as you move away from the tower.
The disadvantages are a phone far from the tower using 3G will use more power than one using GSM because its having to 'talk' louder to get over other phones 'talking'.
Also, signals that get lost because they were drowned out by other phones have to be retransmited, which doesnt happen with GSM as much.
Yeah 3G or CDMA based channel access methods are a real power hog!
As for Auto attach you would expect it to only make a real difference if you have programs holding channels open.
With regards to low reception, it will make a significant difference because power disipation is not linear. Like all radiation it follows the inverse square law. For every meter distance the power drops of by a square of the distance.
Don't forget, when comparing uptime with other phones, with the diamond you have 4x the amount of pixels. VGA (640 x 480) devices will always chew up more Battery that QVGA (320 x 240) . This is one of the main reasons that HTC and the others delayed shipping VGA devices until now.
If you want longer battery life, you are going to have to stop using the display so often.
There is no way a vga machine can compete with a qvga machine on battery life... when all other factors are equal.
I think if you discount 3G, the battery is a little too small for the phone. With 3G its wholy inadequate.
The screen does make a huge difference, but these screens are more efficient, and HTC have used every opertunity to turn the screen off - a bit excessivly if you look at how fast it turns off when you make a call.
I don't understand why they don't use the iphone method of turning it off when the light sensor shows its dark (in a call).. i.e. the earpiece is next to your head!

good question.
i only use my phone for normal phone stuff ans sometimes for some internet browsing.
should i turn anything on or off?
Today I try register TD2 on my university's WIFI system.
The authentication of this system IEEE 802.1x so I need to type ID and password for log-in.
When I used P3600 (trinity,wm5), Registry was okay and I can use in its coverage well.
However TD2 has trouble, when I loged in the wireless system, it suddenly disconnected during type ID or Password. (I solved it by ID copy & Paste) Also, I feel it does not catch WIFI signal well.
After then, I try test two device in my home.
My home has BT Broadband hub1 and I compared Signal Quality graph.
At the weakest aerial area, I cannot see any graph on TD2 but P3600 shows short green graph. By the way, TD2 catch the signal earlier than P3600.
Ok... This situation might be understand but when I put two mobiles in front of Hub (Wireless modem), I found slightly strange result.
The graph of P3600 is full-filled as expected but the graph of TD2 isn't. I think the graph of TD2 is reached almost 80%.
I wish it should be covered by Rom update but if this situation suffered just my device, I concern MY 2nd TD2 has problem. (Of course, I believe I over-worried)
How do you feel the WIFI reception of your Touch Diamond 2?
(P.S.) Sorry, my English is not fluent.
I received my D2 today and have been playing with it by having it connected to my home wifi network. The reception seems fine but occasionally I do see it resync. Suppose it could be better but it hasn't failed on me, so I'm happy neither the less.
EDIT: I had further play with wifi and yes I agree the reception is poor
I'm not saying this is an answer but have you played with the wifi strength slider? The one that is for better wifi or better battery. It's still there under the bonnet.

I'm not saying this is an answer but have you played with the wifi strength slider? The one that is for better wifi or better battery. It's still there under the bonnet.

Yeah gave that a go little to no difference mate.
I've got my TD2 since 5 days, and while I am very please with it overall, I agree the wifi reception is poor...
The signal strength is much lower and I loose connection much faster than a laptop...which is probably normal, but reception is also poorer compared to my "old" acer n311 PDA, which is about 2-3 year old...
Reception seems to improve when antenna is not covered by your hand, but unfortunately, as the antena is at the bottom of the TD2, near the mini-USB connector, your hand is almost always over it when you hold the device in one hand....
I have also observed the "never-perfect reception" phenomenon, I can go 1m from my wifi router and be at 80% signal strength only...I would have maxed out signal quality of my laptop much much earlier than that of course...
I hope it will get better, maybe with a radio update, but I fear this is purely hardware driven, so I will just to have to live with it. Too bad, as I typically use my phone/PDA in "wardriving/warwalking" situation, trying to pick the occasional free wifi to download emails and browse during hollidays. I usually have a laptop in situation where I have a secured wifi acces with clean signal...and at home/work, nothing beat a wired gigabit workstation LOL...
Personally, I haven't had any issues with WIFI on my TD2. I have the wifi battery slider set in the middle and I connect first time, everytime to the router at home and at work.
I have a ATT type Nexus One (not Tmobile), unrooted, with latest froyo.
The life of the battery in 3G mode vs. 2 G mode is astonishing...pretty ridiculous.
I'm searching but can someone tell me if there's been any fixes or advancements in regard to this problem?
When at home I use wifi as much as possible. I leave it on 2G but really, I can't take the slow speeds of 2G, but 3G setting is suuuuuuch a drain on the battery that it seems unreal.
i've had nokia's and more in 3G, my wifes iphone is 3G... and all of them had nearly more than double the battery life.
I hate the voice quality of 2G, I'd love to be able to just leave at 3G, but it's merely hours before it's nearly drained set on 3G. it's got to be a problem (and one that hopefully can be fixed).
Why would 3G setting be sucking THAT much power (decent-strong signals too here)?
Love my nexus1 and I'll live I guess but this problem...it's a bit much.
Any news on this issue, or other things I can consider or change/try to help this? (3G)
thanks
Set your WiFi sleep policy to NEVER. Even thought you're using WiFi at home, whe nthe screen goes off the WiFi shut off and 3G kick in.
Menu>Settings>WiFi settings>Menu>Advance>WiFi sleep policy>Never.

Oh very sorry, I should have said I did set this to never and saved changes.
In fact, I think I've set it 1000x now btw, over some time it STILL always disconnects from wifi (might be router disconnecting though, perhaps I should set an IP manually to solve this??).
GPS and BT are always turned off until needed as well (used very rarely anyways btw).
But when I'm away from home for example, I turn wifi off and test the difference2G vs. 3G and the difference is waaaaay too much, 3G just CHEWS at the battery no matter strong signal or medium.
I find it hard to believe 3G really has to eat up that much battery when set compared to 2G on a Nexus. A little bit to nominal ...sure, but not like this (say like 4-6 hours if i left it 3G for a day with little usage).
What's really happening here? Nothing from google/HTC on this matter?
Heh, i get just the opposite... out in the farmland of west toledo, im getting 2G but typically GPRS and that rapes my battery where as 3G i could go on standby for days if i didnt touch it...
What radio are you running? if your phone is constantly looking for a signal then that may be your problem...
I have the same issue on 3g. Home on WiFi is ok but when I go out during the day on 3g it just kills my battery.
The reason is because android OS keeps the data session open at all times where other OS's close it down when not in use. It's just the nature of how they designed android.
As a test, one day turn off your data connection but stay on 3g and see how good your battery life is. This is how some other OS's work normally.
It's a trade off we have to make for being always connected on android.
For example voice actions need to reach out to Google's servers to work. So in the interest of speed of having to open the data session each time, the OS just keeps data open on hand at all times. But that kills battery quicker.
That's what I've found anyway.

That's because the phone is always on the lookout for a 3G signal, if you know you aren't going to get one, just set it to 2G only and your battery life will massively improve.
