New HTC 6.1 ROM + SDHC = BIG ISSUE !!! - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hello,
since I've installed the last HTC ROM, I have a big problem : all my I/O accesses to the SDHC card are very very slow...
If I copy a file from my PC to the SDHC card, the speed is fine.
But if, for exemple, I launch a CAB file on the SDHC card, the installation of the CAB file is very very slow.
Does anyone else have this problem ?

I have the opposite.... when I'm copying a file from my PC to my phone (for example 2gigs of movies) it takes nearly an hour. When the card is connected directly to my PC it takes about 5-10mins... I don't have any problems on the device as far as I can tell...

I have same kind of problems. When I put my SDHC away, everything works fine. My SDHC is a 4 Go and it worked OK before I updated. Now, it happend that my device slows down or freeze during long seconds. What is going on ?

That's because the Titan is USB 1.1 so you need to insert the card into the PC directly for optimal data transfer rates.

No issue with copying to my 8gb SDHC. From the PC I am connected to a USB 2.0 hub. Launching Cabs from the card works just fine as well.

I have no ISSUE!!!

I agree the fastest option is to transfer large files using the USB 2.0 Hi speed card reader (assuming one came with the card). The TyTN II is a USB 2.0 Full Speed device which doesn't offer the same performance as USB 2.0 Hi speed but thats not the reason for the especially slow performance. There are several threads about this issue including here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=350347
and here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=354629
I've just upgraded my TyTN IIs firmware using HTC eClub (upgrading my sig here next) and transfers using Activesync seem just as slow as they've always been. Perhaps next Microsoft can upgrade Activesync/WMDC to reduce that bottleneck. They really must try harder WRT Activesync IMO.

I have exactly the same issue : my device freezes all the time, for about 10-20 seconds, and sometimes it does also slow down....
I should make a new specific post for that.

I think it can be linked with the RADIO rom... But i am not sure... My provider is ORANGE France... Does it have something to do ?

My provider is also Orange France.
But I've found out what the problem was : Quick Menu.
Since I removed it, the Kaiser does not freeze anymore. I talk about that in another specific thread.

TomTom 5.21 lock up

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I cannot find any solutions to this on any of the forums.
TT5 running ok but 9 times out of 10 it will 'lock-up' during the journey. If I take out the SD card and reinsert it, sometimes it continues to work but after about 4 or 5 goes it locks up completely and needs a hard reset.
Someone suggested that there was still a problem with moving between cells where this would loose connection to the SD card.
Any suggestions on how to fix other than buy a new phone?
TT lockups ...
First thing that comes to mind is
make sure you are using a High speed SD card!
I now use the highly recommended Transcend 80X card and my unit is now performing brilliantly!
I'm running TT 5.1 - not sure of the functionality to upgrade it to 5.21...
HTH
Cheers! Dennis! West London UK!!
The Extreme III is quoted at 20MB per second data transfer speeds
try the transcend 80x it will fix your problem
i had the same problem i found pugs cooked rom fixed the probelm.
I already using PUGS modified 1.11.162 ROM

ok but have you tried the transcend 80x ,as so far it has fixed 100% of pda's that have been changed to this card (thats 8 people that i know of and some were using 1 gig cards)
read this topic
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=39123
use definitly a transcend 80x and your problems are away.
i used a transcend 45x before and had the same issues as you.
it´s not the speed, which is the problum but the need of power of the sd
the tc 80x has a single layer design and so saves power!
greets
p.s.: i use a xda 2i ger + tc 80x 1gb + ttn 5.21
Extreme III not working !?!?!?
Hi all,
Great site - been reading for a while, just signed up.
I've had my Alpine for a few months but haven't done anything with it yet as I'm waiting until I have the money for an SD card.
I was thinking of getting an Extreme III myself as it appears to be one of the best out there (although I was hoping they'd release a 2 or 4gb version). It's rated at 133x and is also SLC (single layer cell)...
So I'm a bit concerned that it's not working for you - let us know if you find the cause of the problem checks!
**duplicate post**
Same problem with a SanDisk miniSD 1GB.
Solved reformatting all ( both low and high level ) using :
FAT32 and cluster size of 2K
Hope this Helps.
Maurizio
What program did you use to format the SD card?
Some good & bad news... :x
Reformated the SD card with SoftWinter's StorageTools to FAT32, 2Kb cluster size, Backup FAT:No (I guess at Low level?)
This has solved 90% of lockups and TT5 has only locked 2 or 3 times since.
I should be getting a Transcend 1Gb 80X SD at the end of the week so I will give it a go.... finger's cross!
I use pocket Mechanic tools for SD maintenance.
Before get new SD card try to install XPUScalar for overclock your PDA ( sd transfer rate increased )
tried a Transcend 1Gb 80x, exactly same problem - must be a problem with the Xda IIi, will try to send it back under warranty to be checked/fixed
Just trying to list the “possible” causes/fixes of the Xda2i lock up when using TT5.21
I to have this problem and as yet is still unresolved.
It can run for maybe 15 mins, locks up showing full set of satellites. Have to soft reset and start TT again.
Using Globalsat BT-338. Tried on “other bluetooth device”. Now set to NMEA, (as recommend elsewhere) tried 38400 baud rate, tried 4800, Left battery out for over an hour (cold start) still the same.
Storage card, a Transcend 80x
Upgraded radio 1.04.00. Ext Rom 1.11.162 (to Pugs version, Thank you DAZ999)
Reloaded To TT5.21
Reloaded Globalsat. (Question, the GPS info CD is version 5.1, and comes up with “this is made for an earlier version of software”?)
Hard reset numerous times.
Last resort, reblow ROM, reload all software and reinstall Globalsat.
Any further suggestions greatly appreciated.
Dave
My PDA uses 2 x Kingston 512Mb SDcards: one has the 'serious' stuff on it (Tomtom, Dictionaries, Visitor Guides etc) and the other games/films.
I've never experienced any problems with either TomTom or other programs, excepting the aminations in 'Riven' sometimes are a bit slow. Video plays happily full-screen using divx and MVP Player.
I recently installed Pocket Mechanic and ran the tests on the SD cards:
... they both scored a speed rating of 2.7X!
so am sure it's not a speed issue, as TT works perfectly smoothly.
my $.0.2
Joe
Me again,
I've received a new XDA IIi from O2 and guess what, the same intermittent problems with TT5 locking up.
For anyone who as a working copy of TT5 (5.21) help us with how they installed it… ie. what ROM used, if they just installed 5.21 or install 5.0 and installed update to 5.1 and update to 5.21..
TomTom support told me that there are known issues with XDA IIi and transferring data from the SD card, so why is the phone on the list of supported devices…
Hi there,
If it can be of any help, here's how I've installed TomTom :
- ROM version : 1.11.162/1.04.00 cooked by pug
- SD Card : Transcend 80x 1GB
- Install TT 5.0 with Bluetooth Support, Voice, but without maps. I don't use main memory for most of my programs, but the "Storage" directory instead (Disk On Chip)
- Install TT 5.21 upgrade. In a few cases I've had to reinstall just the Voice
- Copy the maps to the storage card.
- Use the Bluetooth Manager to pair with the GPS unit.
- Launch TT, configure "Other Bluetooth GPS", and pick COM 6.
The GPS is a Holux GPSLim236, set to 38400 baud NMEA.
I haven't had any lockups so far.
The only annoyance is that TT is very touchy about the order in which I start my BT devices : if I switch on the BT headset before launching TT, it won't find the GPS. The other way around seems to work better, but I've had to re-configure the GPS inside TT a few times to get it to figure out the GPS was really there.
Good luck !
Checks, did you solve it?
With format in fat32 2kb or installin how Mr Spoke said?

Problem installing to MicroSD with Activesync 4.5?

Hi all,
First post, and really hope this is a stupid newbie question! Just taken posession of my new Vario III and got a 6Gb Sandisk MicroSD to fill with my junk
The card is recognised fine in the kaiser and can access it and install cabs directly from it with no problem. The unit gives me the option where to install once I run a cab as expected...
However when I fire up Activesync and use an EXE installer (same apps) via the PC for anything, the 'Install to default directory' option is ticked and greyed out...I don't think its app specific henve Activesync isn't getting wind of the SD card at all?
Am I doing something really daft here or is there a problem? Can't find any references to this on the net hence I'm hoping its the former!!!! Why would the card behave fine in the PDA but drop off the face of the earth in Activesync?
Cheers for any help.
Bump
Hmm, well its looking increasingly like card problem...this morning my Opera icons were all scrambled (its installed on the MicroSD card) and File Explorer reported rubbish filenames on the card itself (random characters).
Soft reset it, and so far its okay again (but can't try Activesync as not on my home PC).
Its a Sandisk 6Gb card from MobyMemory - what are the chances its a bad card versus a bad unit from T-Mobile? Presumably high?!? Odd that noone else has reported similar issues though?
Cheers for any advice...
I am not sure ... but I dont install software in the microSDHC card.
I always install int he phone ROM. Hey we have 128 MB I installed bunch of apps and still have 97 MB free ...
Oh btw, I use that new SanDisk 6 GB MicroSDHC as well, just to store all the data, movies and PIE cache ... it works fine till now.

Copying large files using Activesync to Kaiser SD card issues...

Peoples,
I am finding that whenever I attempt to copy a large file (>50Mb) to my device and SD card from PC using Activesync that it copys "normally", then times out, and tries to do it again! This happens for quite a while until I cancel the transfer.....
I am thinking that somewhere I have to change a setting so that this can happen (increase timeout length?, whatever.....)
Appreciate any help here, as I have had this issue with not only my Kaiser but other devices as well (Orbit).....
Many thanks!!
Have you tried waiting a looong time?
If you mean the Activesync progress bar jumps back to the beginning and then appears to start again, it's not actually timing out. The problem is simply that Activesync's progress bar misbehaves under large file transfers. If you just leave it for ever and a day (thats the normal time for large file transfers under Activesync) you'll find it should complete the transfer. If you need to get the files across onto the microSDHC card much quicker then just use the card reader it came with (at least for Sandisk 6 GB cards here in the UK).
get a cheap microsd to usb adapter as a reader
Thanks guys, I usually use a card reader but sometimes get lazy and think I can just "quickly" copy accross....appreciate the info, just never was patient enough to wait out what looked like a failing transfer!!
Cheers!!

The key is to realise it's not a failing transfer (despite what Activesync appears to show). I've used Activesync for large file transfers (using both USB and bluetooth) and since installing my USB 2.0 adapter card in my PC (to replace the onboard VIA USB 1.1 ports) I've made many large file transfers to the microSD card in the device and it always gets through in the end. Usually I just start the transfers before I go to bed and its ready in the morning. Will mention this bug to HTC in my next letter (one of many to add to the list).
Glad I could help.

In my case, I believe that it is actually timing out....
This happened to me several times, when I tried to copy a slightly larger file, it looked like Activesync timed out the connection.
A few times I tried transferring files of a few mb in size to/from my Hermes or Kaiser while connected via activesync, and it disconnected before the file was done.
If I am not transferring files, it seems to stay connected. Is there any way to prevent it from happening?
If it's just transferring files, there are many workarounds. However, I've got problem sync'ing my Kaiser with Lotus Notes via EasySync (from IBM). I have about 6000 calendar entries. Lately, every time when I tried to sync, EasySync went through about half of that, then quit - complaining about unknown error. I suspect that ActiveSync (which EasySync relies on providing the connection) timed out on the connection.
I did a lot of search on the web, and this forum. there were many hits on Google. But most of the questions and answers were more related to Exchange Sever timeout.
MSDN library does have a discussion thread. there is supposed to be a registry key called: "GetObject Timeout " on the PC side in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\DeviceID\Services\Synchronization. However, I cannot find this anywhere.
Any suggestions?
thanks very much!!!

If your Activesync connection is disconnecting altogether then thats not timing out. I had this problem when using my old VIA Motherboard USB ports and it was simply because the USB hardware/drivers weren't up to the task. Since installing my new NEC Chipset USB 2.0 Hi Speed PCI card the difference is like night and day in terms of Activesync connection reliability. What USB ports on what device are you using? What happens if you try the transfer using a Bluetooth Activesync connection (other than it taking even longer)?

slow copying to SD card

how is it possible that copying files to sd card over wifi or usb is much more slower than copying to memory of phone. and how to fix it?
because wifi transfer speeds aren't speedy at all since it's very similar to direct downloading off 3g/hsdpa and usb transfers through activesync is nothing compared to the blazing speeds of copying files from a card reader
i know that card reaader is fast but i asked why is coping files to main memory faster than copying to sd card over wifi. because when i download to mainmemory the speed is 250kB and when i download to sd card the speed is 30kB.i want to know why is it so?thx
I noticed this today when trying to send some large files to my SD card. Almost made me feel like the phone is not USB 2. It was going to take several hours but once I yanked the memory card out and put it in my pc it only took a couple of minutes. Good question.

This seems like WM5Storage with a UI make over. Looks like its for Windows Mobile 2003 2005 and 2006... probably a typo on 2005 and 2006. Anyone have them both and can compare speeds?
WM5Storage looks a bit lighter, cab is less than 50 kb... I have the cab attached if you want to check it out! It was working on my last flash (Duttys Hybrid WM 6.1), i haven't installed it yet on this one.
Slow for me too
I thought I was having a real slow copy this morning using USB cable to copy to micro-sd in phone. For camparison, I was copying a little under 4gb of music files to the 8gb micro-sd card and it took like 2 hrs. I would have popped it into the memory card reader on the PC, but for some reason either the reader or the PC (vista 64bit) does not like the 8gb SDHC card.
Mine copys pretty fast if you install du meter I think it will show you the transfer speeds. Maybe you have a generic MicroSD ?

For me, I'm using SanDisk. Do you happen to be using a SDHC card? I never noticed this speed issue copying to a regular 2gb card. Of course, it could be that I am copying 2-3 times more data now and just didn't pay close enough attention in the past.

This could be because when you download something the device will write little bits of data every time a few kBs are downloaded, so many little writes. Memory cards are VERY slow at writing small blocks.
Downloading to phone memory and then moving to the card with an explorer might be worth a try.
Same problem with many little files, memory cards don't like those.
BTW, the speed of the Kaiser's USB port IS USB1.1-like. Maybe the hardware is USB2-compliant, but as all traffic has to go through the CPU the effective speed isn't any higher. It will take a good 20 mins to copy a 950MB file.
I have a tiny keyring microSD reader that's lightning fast. I have a 2GB card inside that I can use like a common USB disk, and when I need more space or want to transfer stuff to the phone I remove it and put the phone's 8GB card instead.

Hotfix for Windows XP that adds support for SDHC cards that have a capacity of more than 4 GB
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934428
Not sure that'll work directly for you in Vista 64, but you might find related items. I had to do that to my laptop to get my Tilt's card to read in my work laptop which is running XP 32. I need to get a new card reader at home unfortunately, no matter what I do to it, it won't read SDHC.
Hello all,
I am trying to copy files from my computer to my storage card. I'm currently using WM5Storage. Everytime I try to move the files over, it indicates that my storage card is not formatted, and asks if I wish to format it. I always click NO because I have several cab files on the storage card that I can use in case something happens and I need to reinstall something.
When I try to move things via Windows Explorer (the mobile device folder), I get the same result.
Anyone know how I can accomplish this?
Thanks so much.
when connecting the kaiser to the computer (xp sp3), you can see a new network connexion created and opened at 10 Mbts. That means the usb link is usb 1.1, a poor performance for a material as the kaiser.
Big files, using usb 1.1 are very long to transfer.
Best regards

The Kaiser provides USB 2.0 'Full Speed' specs which means up to 12 Mb (as opposed to USB 2.0 Hi Speed which goes up to 480 Mb) BUT it's not the hardware that accounts for the poor file transfer speed, it's Activesync/WMDC. Anyone who has ever seen files transferring across to from a PC with a healthy (but old) 10 Mb NIC will realise the Kaiser via Activesync offers nowhere near that level of performance.

sdhc Kaiser II TeRrIbLy slow

Hi everyone
That's my first post! I've been hanging around here withwout becomming user so long...till now.
I have just bought an sdhc card ( dont know the class ) and it's working EXTREMELY SLOWWWW on my Kaiser TyTN II (htc) when I mean slow, i mean below usb1.0
I'm using Card Export II, compatibility with Hermes devices, and when writing a single mp3 through, ~6mb it takes 5 minutes. Transfer rate is below usb 1, and that was weird, so i've checked to transfer ~6mb to anotrher microSD card (256mb old card from old phone, nokia brand) and the song was copied pretty fast, reaching usb 1.0. bitrate
Imagine to copy a 400~mb film on my new card, even i can't copy mp3 ...to slow...ah, almost i forgot it, the new card, kingston sdHC with it's HC pc card reader works exellent, usb2.0.
How that can be possible? an old card is working at least 4fold times faster!!! than my new Kingston sdHC 4gb.
Any idea?
Really appreciate.
Any idea about that?
Someone is using a Kaiser II with Card Export II? having reeeaaaly slow data rate¿
thanks
As you know, the Kaiser only supports USB 1.1 and thus (s)low speeds.
First of all, disable the Hermes workaround option. Activating the option reduced my transfer speed by half (approx.).
For large files, just use an external USB 2.0 card reader.
In the past I have done a test to get an idea of the different transfer speeds:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=392941 (post 9)
Just wondering: which ROM are you using and which class has your SDHC card? (Me: -G-'s DK.10 series - WM6.1 & SDHC Class 4)
As to why your transfer rates are so low, I have no idea...
Hi!
Mhhh it could be the rom....i've even tried tweaking registry parameters (increase sd bloc size, etc) with no significant success on writing speed.
I've got and kingston 4gb sdhc class 4, rom WM6 prof compilation 18125.0.4.2
I had this problem with a Kingston 8GB Class 4. I tried tweaks and other roms, no luck. I ended up exchaning the card for another one that was exatly the same, and it completely solved my problem. I think a bad one gets in the batch from time to time. It took like 2 minutes to transfer 500kb. Granted, it takes a long time to transfer files anyways, but not that bad.
I've heard this from other people as well. However,

if not mistaken, i think i've read somewhere stating that kaiser max spped is usb1.1 and class2 for sdhc (hardware limitation)
well
I jave update the rom....to hyperdragon III and things got worse....
Now, can't even connect with pc via Card Export....and the worst of all, my gps got ruined.
More than 45minutes to catch gps signal
Before flashing, with the original rom i got satellite inside home, now...now not even outside....
Gps is now spoiled.
I've used [13 January 2009] HyperDragon III Raphael OS 5.2.21009 Build 20931.1.5.0
Now i should fix the gps...any idea¿? reflashing the rom would be painful.
Thanks
The fastest transfer rate I have found was via a ftp server on the kaiser. Its called Mocha Ftp Server. Works via wifi
Hope this helps
P.S.
I dont think HDIII comes with a radio. Maybe you are using an incompatible one. Look at the list on his page and download a matching radio for WM6.1 ( as this 100% will cause issues with any radio function including GPS )
It's not only a hardware thing.. I am using an sdhc 8 gig from sandisk, and just reading/writing to it is slow (even w/ an external reader as oppossed to the one in my comp)....
I guess it's like trading off mileage for speed in a car though.............. I dunno, I'm about ready to chuck mine, good thing it only cost me 29 bucks.
