right. That would certianly help me find sh*tloads of software but I was hoping to find *good* software and not just any crap that happens to popup in google. Geeze dude, if you can't post something constructive then why post anything at all?
I totally agree, these smart ass remarks are useless. I normally just use handago to search for free ones.
Good luck

* rss reader (river of news format) - I'm trying out mDigger and NewsGator Go There is also viigo, but I found it horribly slow in comparison.
* drawing program - try http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ (I've got Pocket Picture, which meets my wants)

1. I suggest IM+ for IM or mundu messenger or agile messenger
2. can't help with podcasts because i don't need those.
3. RSSHub works for RSS I believe.
4. your phone has a built in email client of outlook
5. i don't draw on my phone but the Notes program could be a suitable freebie for you thats built in
6. your phone changes time automatically with DST when you have it ticked in phone settings
7. for video there's a TCPMP completed package around with all codecs for it except flv which can be sound on sourceforge(use google)
8. wardriving is a bad bad thing
9. your phone has standard picture viewing but you could try S2V or HTC Album
Thanks (very much) to all for the suggestions, to the "use google crowd"; i obviously annoyed you and for that i am sorry but the point of my posting was asking for recommendations.

Honestly this is the most intelligent comment I have ever read. If you want to find good programs, then search and get your feet wet. You will install crapware and find out you don't like it, thats the only way to find out what is good and what is bad. Thats part of the fun of winMo, its all about finding what works great for you and your phone!!.
I tend to use freewareppc.com (not to be confused with freewarepocketpc.net) and ppc4all.com (search the freebies), although most of the best freewares can be found right here at xda dev. If it's worth having, at some point somebody will have suggested or recommended it and posted a link. Only trouble is that nearly always requires knowing exactly what you're after. Good luck!

I suppose you want someone to install it for you, configure it, and use it for you too? You need to get aquainted with how to find stuff, etc. There's a zillion sites that are very easily found, but gee, I guess I better not say how.
BTW, you whining that people were being smartass to you while being a smartass is, well, dumbass.

Go easy, man. Not everyone is in the XDA mind set when they start. I'm sure first couple of people who told him to use google made their point. We all have been there one day. Now he knows.
@gaikokujinkyofusho: I recommend having a read through the PocketPC experts awards results. Lots of reviews, lots of good software. Not all free, but lots worth having (and buying!)

How about stop being such a n00b and read the wiki. That tells you freeware sites etc
a few solutions
I would recomdend using the windows mobile email app especially if your email uses IMAP4
its realy sgood can cehck every 1,15,30 etc
there is a realy nice youtube app you can find the link in a post or pm me if u can't and ill email it to you
if your using aim u can download the "aim for ppc" from aol uk its what I used on my wizad now I use the installed one that came with stock att tilt rom
Basic WinMob Apps
Gaiko,
You may want to back up a bit and begin by gaining some control over the OS first.
WinMob doesn't do automated profile switching (ring settings, backlight settings...) beyond "off" and "mute."
WinMob also doesn't clean up after itself very well. You will notice that, as you use your winmob device it will get slower and slooower. So you may want to begin with a couple of basic applications like ...
phoneAlarm (pocketmax.net), which lets you manage ring tones, alerts volumes, backlight level and time to turn off... (profiles)
MemMaid (Dinar Soft) which helps keep your device's memory freed up to operate all the apps you are dying to find and install.
I would also highly recommend the following...
BeyondPod for both RSS reading and podcasts. I have tried most of what's available. BP works best and is free.
ProfiMail for email. If you are using POP email, Profi is simply the best. The user interface is very straight forward and efficient and it renders html email better than any other program I have used by far. It also lets you store email on the card (vs. internal memory). ProfiMail does not, however, integrate with your calendar app to send notifications about meetings... The big player in this space is FlexMail. BUT, the rendering of HTML mail sucks - at best - and the UI is not at all user friendly (and I use this app for my pushed email account). It will, however, integrate with your calendar to send and receive notifications.
Opera for web browsing. Period! Pay version currently @ 8.65 with 9 promised sometime before the turn of the decade.
Calendar program. Pocket Informant. Period.
When it comes to where to find your apps, check the XDA store first. Then, I recommend MobiHand and the rest. I try to go straight to the developers sites once I have found them in the hopes that they get to keep more of the price of the app that way.
Happy hunting, Richard

You are one of the few people on this site who has considered a question before replying with an easy answer.
Yes this is a developer’s site, but developers work best through collaboration and being considerate to the client / users needs. Who is to say that the OP won’t end up contributing hugely in one way or another to this community? I personally think there are some on this forum who seem to be looking for a fight. I would also hazard a guess that most of these types of people aren’t actually developers themselves, but like to feel big by belittling others in public.
I try to keep my head down on these forums in fear of reprisal, where as other forums make you feel welcome and people try and help each other.

In fact its the complete opposite. You will find this site to be a wealth of information and everyone is more than happy to help, but alot of people (myself included) get annoyed when we see the same threads posted again and again when all people need to do is read the wiki or use the search option. These tools are there for a reason because they help people.
You will find everyone on here can be your best friend if you use the search option as all you do is create another redundant thread.
Dont take this personally as this happens every day
SlyTuk,
Thanks for the kind words.
I figure most of the folks doing the flaming need to get their hand out of their pants, go outside and soak in a little vitamin D (sun).
And I don't worry too much about them.
Once upon a time I was in Gaiko's shoes trying to understand WinMob after years with EPOC-->Symbian. I got lots of help from this forum. It is nice to be able to re-pay the value I get here as an end-user.

For me it's pretty simple thus far, which is why I'm kind of looking for more ideas.....
1. MioMap GPS
2. Google Maps

Resco Explorer
Resco Photo viewer
Digital Tesx Speech
SBSH iLauncher
SBSH Pocket Weather
Navigon Mobilenavigator 6
Shubaroo.com Group SMS
Pocket Dictate
VITO SMS-Chat
SK Tools
Softmaker Office Suite
The above programs are great and Kaiser runs very smoothly
Aren't there already threads on this??
Not trying to be annoying, but no need to start more threads cluttering up this forum more than it is already...
It's a forum, on a developers site no less, not a make your own chat room service...
greek if you feel that way you should have not entered in the forum. I hate when people do that man. What a waste of a post, get a life. You remind me of the annoying hall monitor jerk we used to have in elementary school.
Anyway my faves are:
palringo-Messenger program
Skype
Audionotes-Records phone call conversations both ways because you never know when you are going to need it
Call Firewall-Block people from calling you, have only people in your contacts able to contact you, setup blacklists etc.
Pocket Informant-Calendar program best one hands down
SKtools
WMROUTER-turns your phone into a router
Microsoft Voice Command-Read you your email, sms messages as they come in/open programs with your voice

Well he's right. Its the first rule of the forum. Think of it as going to someone's house and doing whatever you want. Well your a member of this board, you have to respect the rules that are in place. If you didn't have to time to read it, I'd took my time and copied it for you.
1. Check if something hasn't been asked before
Some questions just keep popping up over and over. Please use the 'search' function in the menu above each and every page in the forum. Try entering a few keywords to see if your question has been asked before. If it has, please read the topics and see if you can figure it our from there.
(We acknowledge that part of the problem is that we never created a well-organized system of FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) documents. But then we're doing lots of cutting-edge stuff, and we'd rather build cool tools than work on perfecting FAQs.)
The exact topic and answers have numerous threads, about 30, for an estimate. Don't call him a jerk, he's right. Anyone can call you an idiot for denying understood forum etiquettes.

yes, he is right, but I think its a waste of time constantly post the same thing(use the search button, it was asked). I know its tiring to answer the same q. over and over (yesterday I answered on 2 equal q.) and if you dont like it ignore the question and the post and do not answer him to use the search.
But I agree on the steps(search and if u dont find anything then ask).
You know, for me, I try to search. But on this site ( and many others) I don't know how to search if my search needs more than one word. i'ave asked and no-one answers.
For example I wanted to find topics on "AE Buttons" recently. What I got was thousands of posts with the word "buttons". I don't see boolean as an option here (I use that on other sites for phrase searchs and am successful), and I've tried various methods with quotes, etc. with no success.
So, if the search engine/inteface were a little more capable, or if it is capable, then more intuitive or friendly, then search would be used more.
Personally, I don't mind much having the repetetive posts. New users to this stuff every day, and it's somethign to live with I suppose.
1. Resco Explorer with regedit/bluetooth/network plugins. Awesome stuff.
2. QIP for messaging (supports ICQ, AIM, etc etc) - freeware
3. HTC Home (gotta have it)
4. S2U2 - must have
5. QuickMenu - nothing's better than this launcher, period.
6. TCPMP or Core Player
7. Opera 9.5 beta - I love it!
You can use Google to do a much more advanced search.
enter into Google something like,
Code:
site:forum.xda-developers.com "phrase string"
If you put your string in quotations, it will search for the entire phrase.
1. total commander -> best file manager: bluetooth, network, registry, ftp in one place! and its FREE!!
2. s2u2 -> full screen caller FTW!!
3. igo 2006 plus -> best nav software
4. all spb products: weather, pocket plus, gprs monitor, phone suite, time, mobile shell.
5. FTouchFL -> makes every app finger friendly
6. im plus -> best messenger
7. coreplayer & tcpmp -> best video players

I can understand why someone would pot a question that been asked. I have tryied to search and search and search for information about issues on my phone and can't find the answer. For instance I can't seem to find anything about the s2u2. I had trouble and it keep looking up. I typed search and it bring up 300 posts about everything else. Not patient enought to sit there and feel my eyes cross over.
Or I had an issue with my battery draining, i did do search but there was nothing that meet my answer.
For me, its got to be:
Chronos - Very configurable alarm clock/scheduler
Run.GPS - As a runner, this is a fantastic tool to track time, distance, map runs, add photos, real time location - only on day 3 of 14 day trial but it was awesome on my long sunday run. Upload routes to website along with photos taken en-route. Plug in headphones and you get real time speed, distance etc read out. It can also navigate you on predefined routes but haven't tried that yet. Anyone using alternative similar software to this?
seeing as no-one mentioned it.
GsPlayer..... able to play any shoutcast radio stations.
Awesome if you have an inclusive data plan.
I also like Warfare Incorporated, Its quite old now, but if you liked the original command and conquer, you'll love it!
Slingplayer for if you have a slingbox obviously!
The others have pretty much all been mentioned Resco Explorer, TCPMP, Opera, Google Maps TomTom etc
Phone Forwarding?
Well, sometimes you can't find anything at all, simply because you just don't seem to think of the right search terms to enter (even in Google). So I'm resurrecting this thread:
I want to be able to forward my phone to home simply, and back to voicemail simply. As you know be default changing forwarding is a bit of a pain: press green phone button; then menu/services/options/call forwarding/get settings. Then you have to manually enter the number.
Any software suggestions to be able to ultimately press a button to have it forward home, then anohter or toggle first button to swithc back to voice mail?
OK to the hall monitoring snitch ^^$%$&&%$% and to the rest yes there are plenty of posts the same so what? Thanx to RWCOZENS I have found a program that I have been looking for for a long time. I just didnt know what it was called. So post what ya want ignore the jerks and have a nice day to all.
I'm planning on purchasing a new phone, likely the AT&T tilt.
My family is currently an AT&T customer. They will be adding a new line for me.
Is the best place to purchase a phone through AT&T's site?
Do you recommend refurbs?
Also, I hear that if I do not have a data plan, I could rack up extreme charges.
I want to use Wi-Fi and not 3G Internet to save money. I also want to disable 3G to save battery life.
Upon searching, I see that "Dutty's Diamond V1 Build 19588" may be able to do what I want. I'm also searching for similar builds. If I get a Tilt, is Dutty's the preferred ROM build, and does it offer what I'm looking for (protection from data charges)?
I also want a nice Touch 3D interface (with the option of enabling or disabling it to save memory/CPU).
As far as my experience goes: I've modified various devices from my gaming systems to my iPod Video. I'm just new to cell phones. I'm here learn and hopefully one day contribute.
PS. Current owners: I've read stories. How is the video quality, really? Will this phone be able to replace my iPod Video 5G 30GB for video playback? Also, will I be required to pay $10/mo for AT&T Navigator, or will GPS work fine without the package?
Sorry for the lengthy post. I'll continue my reading and researching. (been clicking links from the sticky)
I personally delete the network settings to prevent any data charges, or you can look into download Modaco Nodata. Touchflo comes with the Tilt and if you want the cube, there are many versions on here so you'll have to find which you like best. I don't mind the video quality. It's not the best but certainly not the worst; works fine most of the time. It might not replace the iPod in video playback to many people's standards, but it would for me. No you wont be requried to pay for the Navigator, you can get Tomtom or iGO that have pre-downloaded maps.
Ok, so eliminate the "Extreme" data charges you will need to install this:
Modaco NoData - this enable you to toggle the ability to use or not use data connections. (very very useful for roaming and etc.).
Then,
I think only one rom has NoData already cooked in but you can always just download it from the above link and put it into any rom you wish.
For any GPS you will need to pay.
3D Touch interface with the ablility to enable/Disable it - nothing spectacular? Sorry.
All the roms include a Communication Manager in which you can turn off 3G data connections (along with wifi, Internet Sharing, Active Sync, Bluetooth etc.)
Dutty's roms are no longer supported - he has moved his development to the Diamond.
This will not replace your iPod Vid. unless you can find a 30Gb Micro SDHS card - even then, i think the iPod battery is tailored more towards video so it may last longer than the tilt if you plan to watch videos on it.

You have several answers already - here is my take on it -
1. I purchased my Tilt through AT&T and have not regretted it - you might get it cheaper somewhere else - but if they are selling it there is a reason - right?
2. you can turn off the data capability (as several have already said.)
3. there are many things that you can do with Kaiser Tweak to turn off 3G and other things to preserve battery life - but you will not get (realistically more than one day's worth of battery no matter WHAT you do (since most people have to go in DAY increments and I have NEVER gotten TWO out of it.
4. Dutty's ROMs are no longer supported - look at my signature for one that I think is pretty great - but lots of others will work for you as well.
5. GPS - this is FREE totally - no cost - if you want TeleNAV it will cost per month and that is useless because I need it when my cell does not work and it requires cell to work - the GPS works free with live search and I have TOMTOM which is free monthly but you have to purchase maps.
6. I watch videos on it all the time - works fine - not 1080p but adequate.
Just my opinion.
Bill
You can also use "Kaiser Tweaks" to prevent your Tilt from connecting to the internet. You can always deactivate 3G. To use telenav you need to have a data connection. So the best option would be something like Garmin or Tom Tom or something similar.
Thanks. From what I understand, I have to go ROM hunting. I saw somewhere on the forums a person's signature noting use of Dutty's Diamond on their Tilt. It may have been a typing error. From a geek's perspective, that's great. From a paying consumer's perspective, I'd rather not risk a brick.
As far as video goes, I'm not interested in storage space. 4GB MicroSDHC is fine. It is the video quality I'm mainly interested in.
I'm a TomTom fan, I should investigate this. I'm glad I don't have to pay monthly. Also, I know there are alternate solutions, some with free downloadable maps. In either case, my GPS question has been answered.
As I read, one question popped up in response to the data blocking. Does Kaiser Tweaks require a new ROM, or will it work on a stock Tilt? Also, what about Modaco NoData? I cannot view the page because it requires registration. I'd prefer not to pay for software to block data when the purpose of blocking data is to save money.
Thanks for the speedy responses.
PS. I still haven't heard much about Refurbs. Should I worry, or if I can find a refurb much cheaper, is that the best option?

Just as an aside, let's not sell Mr, Duttythroy down the river just yet. Even though he has moved on, he has left behind some great roms that work great and are supported by many threads.
In response to zeezee and the video quality: In that case, I'll have fun with my encoders. I'll read the forum and do some of my own testing. I usually set up a good profile for various videos on different devices.
About Dutty's ROMs. They do seem a bit dated, but looking at his package set and some features, it's no wonder a lot of newer ROMs are popping up based on his. If anything, I feel I should try a recent one that is Dutty based. Although, If I decide to cook my own later on, I'll probably start with OEM as a base.
I've been reading more, and it definitely helps. I have a comparison of the 2008-06 and 2008-07 ROMs going on. I may put my results on my site. Thanks to all the chefs for the good ROMs.
For those using cooked ROMS: I see a lot of Touch Diamond ROMs out now. I know some work on the Tilt, with or without keyboard fix. Is that what I really want though as a Tilt user? Are there more Tilt-catered ROMs? Looking at it, I see Jacks V2 Full, WM6.1 ROM _ Ryncppr Version V6, L26_KaiserDiamond_V9, and HyperDragon III.
For audio listeners: Did any Tilt user find an adapter to use normal headphones? Did you decide to get bluetooth stereo headphones (expensive and use battery)? What are my choices? I'd assume since it's WM 6.1 I can play just about any video or audio out there with the use of other media players and creativity on my own part (yay for encoding).
PS. Happy 4th of July to those who celebrate it!

There are many mini usb to 3.5mm adapters out there, but they are all still rather bulky.
I think you would be better off in the long run with quality BT head phones. But shop wisely , not all headsets play music, some just answer calls.

One question in addition to the above: I understand Internet will be blocked when using NoData. Will that prevent me from using the IM and MMS feature on my Messaging Unlimited plan?
I ask this because my brother is WIX Blocked and can only send SMS, but we pay for messaging which includes IM and MMS in addition to SMS.

I'm curious how NoData works compared to other methods.
Is it a software block? Does it disable portions of the hardware? How does it allow the IM while preventing other applications including Internet from being used? I'm under the assumption that IM is simply another app which communicates the same as the browser.
A link to a good thread, tutorial, or info page would be nice. The previous one linked asked me to login. It may have been a simple copy/paste error.

It changes registry settings.
The page is a forum and the software is on a thread.
I'm searching around for threads. Are there any "what ROM do you use" polls for Tilt users? Are those discouraged here? I'm trying to get an idea of popular and successful ones.
gps for free
To add a detail: I use google maps on the tilt. You need to download and run "gpst test", which you launch just before starting google maps... apparently, so I read here, google maps can't initialize the gps, it has to already be running...gps test does that for you. Then, launch g-maps, and on the bottom right, pull up menu, and check "use gps". Unfortunately, you need to do this everytime.
The use of gmaps is intuitive. It is NOT nearly as good for finding directions, and driving along, as ANY other gps I have used... it lack simple features linke "track up", for example, always being north up. BUT, it is free...you don't need to load the maps on the phone, it pulls them from the web, along with satellite and traffic data, if you wish. I find it is also more accurate than some other gps databases I have in terms of showing where a certain business is located.
I think yahooo may have a similar product, but I have not tested it.

Personally i love ROMeOSv2.3, very very stable and run light.
Here is a link if you need it: http://www.mindsofwisemen.com/fileso/other/ROMeOSv2.362808MMs.zip
I'll look into the ROMeOS version.
How does it perform in the "eye candy" department?
Thanks for the google maps info. I want something slightly better, so I may go towards paid software.

Well, "eye candy" its light and simple, i enjoy it
How is it in terms of speed including but not limited to 3D support?
I literally just bought my at&t tilt today, and when I bought it the guy I got it from suggested I come here to do some digging on modifying/personalizing my Tilt to my liking. Now, I'm somewhat of a computer nerd. I can work through most issues with my PC without having to call customer service or hit up forums or anything. I have no experience with pocket PCs or windows mobile however.
I've read the multiple notices here advising to read around first before asking dumb questions, but I have to say that I'm still completely lost and don't even know where to begin. I really don't have complicated intentions, I'm almost 100% satisfied with the phone as-is...regardless, I still just have no idea what to even start with, so I figured I would just throw that out there and hopefully get pointed in the right direction. Hopefully I'll be able to take it from there, but the tutorials, wikis, and FAQs that I was advised to browse through first (and I apologize if I'm just not seeing it, again I'm a WM noob) just aren't getting me there.
All I'm really interested in doing is changing my home screen. Other things I want to do I don't even know if it's possible to do so, or if I even have to download anything!
So maybe just one more shove in the right direction?
Try This
This is not going to change your rom......This will give a new look totally...I think you'll like it...Install it from your desk top

I agree here

Wisbar advance (check out the skins for this app..)
If you know a bit of XML try RLtoday
oh, and search for "Ultimate launch" on the forum...
ummm check out the second link in my sig.
I'm in the same boat as you. There is so much information here, it's quite overwhelming. I want to get the most out of my device, but I just don't have he time to really get into it.
Well you have to start somewhere, so just say where you want to go.
Would you like to make the phone look different?
Would you like to add your own ringtones?
Themes?
gps stuff?
roms?
seriously look at the second link in my signature.
I suggest that you use it for a while to get used to it, then read, then try changing it. Just my 2 cents.
I'm guessing your question is more basic than the answeres provided. If you just want to change your today screen, check out the "Today" applet under "Settings" on the start menu. You can choose from a variety of default plugins, and some of them have options you can change (simply click the options button if it's enabled). As you install more apps, they may have Today Screen plugins as well.
DO NOT GO THROTTLE LAUNCHER.... i like the guy that developed it but it has become obsolete with manilla 2d, personally i stayed away from flashing for a long time but now that i have started i'm addictted it provides alot better preformance from your ppc, i would highly recommend it
my favorite rom right now is the garmin dk4 manilla just make sure you read up before, its not that complicated once you get the hang of it. biggest thing is make sure to flash hard spl before you flash anything else
Here's some advice from someone who has had pocket pc's for a long time. I am also half a century old, so this advice comes from experience and not theory.
Keep your Kaiser/TyTN II/Tilt, whatever it is, as stock standard as possible. Do not flash new roms etc etc. This is the cause of most problems here unless you are really clued up on this, which it seems you are not at the moment. I won't even try it.
There are many third party apps out there and in here which will not affect the normal functioning and enjoyment of your device. Most of them are freeware.
Today themes are dime a dozen, heck, you can create your own with freeware apps like ThemegenCE (Desktop app which creayes the Tsk file for your device theme and even TKCreator which is a theme creation app directly on your device I (Also freeware and more basic than the former).
You need Total Commander, a freeware File Explorer much better than than one shipped wth the device. Quickmenu 2.7 makes using the device a pleasure and hardly requires the stylus. This provides a task manager, drop down menus, controls for device utilities like bluetooth, wifi, soft resetting etc. You also need Mortplayer which is the best MP3 player and is freeware and of course TCPMP with flashvideo bundle for video clips/movies/flash video from websites etc. This all for free. Heck, here are even freeware GPS apps for navigation out there, eg Amaze GPS and Nav4All, or just go full hog and buy the best like TomTom. TodayAgenda is a Today Plugin for calendar appointments and is one of the best and totally free. S2U2 developed by A_C from XDA is a cool screen saver/slide to unlock app which is free and highly customisable with animated gifs as wallpaper etc.
This would be a good start for you.

MAC

It would be awesome if there was an application to use the MBW-150 bluetooth watch on the G1. Is anyone developing one?

[IDEA]A new contact app(2 preview screenshots)
Does anybody think the built-in contact app is not easy to use?
I'm working on a new contact app called aContact which provides a new UI to access to contact data and some more features.
So,anybody has any idea about this new app or found the disadvantages of the built-in contact app??
THANKS
I will post the scrrenshots after I finished the first version.
Thanks again for your advices!

Thanks for your advice
nice idea even though i dont mind the g1's contact app i know it can be better.
some things i think you should add:
-ability to view contacts in groups or categories
- if possible assign ringtones to group
- have the number/letter show up when scrolling like the icontact for wm
- integrate it so that when someone send you a number you can long press and add number to you contact manager or you can make it retrieve contacts through google.
- have birthday

[REQ] Android App Ideas
hello android users,
I am a developer on the windows mobile side of things (see the M2DC thread for an example of my work) and I am thinking I might like to move over to developing for android.
I have a few problems, first, I don't have a device, this is not a huge deal at the moment because I can just use the SDK emulator for now, but I will be purchasing a device later on if I like developing for this platform. The second problem is that I need help with ideas for some simple apps... since I do not have a G1 to handle on a daily basis I don't really get the chance to feel things out and discover where an app might come in useful.
So my request is this. Does anyone have any ideas for "simple" android applications? Anything they wish the phone did better? Or a simple functionality that they wish the phone had? Reading through this forum it looks like there is a demand for OCR and possibly something to make applying new themes/skins easier? Or the TextTwist Game?
Of these 3 the game sounds the most interesting, the theme changer sounds good too because that is what my current development in windows mobile does, and the OCR is most likely out of my league at the moment.
I am open to any app ideas, I'm just looking for something to get me started and get me interested in the platform.
A few apps i would like to see as follows
1. A reboot option in shut down menu "if possible".
2. Digital Clock for homescreen
3. Screen Capture
4. Camera Zoom option
5. Checkers
Hope this helps a bit, good luck!
An application that kills tasks running in the background (although most folks say it's not possible right now), video recorder, night mode for camera, or Sirius/XM internet streamer similar to SiriusWM5 (I'm not sure that one is possible at the moment either...). Of course, you could create widgets (something more simple) but the source code won't be available to next year allegedly.
- Office suite (word and excel file editor)
- Youtube downloader from phone (like iphone mxtube)
- Super Mario Chronicles !!!!!
- FlightGear portable
- compiz fusion !! (not important but just tto test phone power to my friend that have an Iphone)
- More widget

You can view contacts in groups - Contacts - Menu - Display Group (created on GMAIL page).
Ringtones to groups would be nice, but for now you may just display a group and assign them all a ringtone
The long press to dial/save numbers in SMS has been addressed and should be in the final version of Android 1.0.
A birthday? Ehrmm.... Would personally prefer that to stay where it is (in my calendar).
I would like it to integrate the Dialer and searching for contacts, so i can just start typing a name or a number and it would show me the matching contacts. (I think SpellDial does this but is not very robust).
Thanks

Thank you very much for the input guys, I really appreciate it. These lists are definitely getting the creative juices flowing... I will see what I can put together.
If possible I will open source the beta version of my first program and post the beta packages here on xda for everyone to use without charge... I am still learning the whole process so we will see what happens in the end
Thank you for the suggestions, and I am still open to hearing more
I guess "simple" is also relative to your level of proficiency in Java and mobile development. As far as holes in the shipped operating system that could use fixing, there are many points to attack. Some could be done in the JVM, others would have to be done in native c. Examples include:
An office suite
Video recording
Touchscreen text input (API will expose this in 09Q1)
A simple but high-quality word or puzzle game would be great tho.
Edit: welcome aboard the Android side too ;-)

I agree with you 100%, the system stuff sounds good, but of the posted ideas and from what I have seen there is a small demand for "simple" games, and this is the direction I plan on going initially, games are fun to make and they should give me a decent overview of what is involved in throwing together an app.
As far as my java proficiency... I can definitely get by. I have a few websites that rely completely on the google web toolkit, and my bachelors degree was typical of an early 2008 CS curriculum, 2 years of java to learn what OO programming is, and then 2 years of C to learn about the fun stuff (pointers, threads, compilers, OS's, etc...). but like I said before I am just looking to make a traditional application, and I think that it is going to end up being a game of some sort,
I don't have a device yet, if I get one it would be pretty much a development only device, so I am trying to get my feet wet with an app or 2 before I decide to get one. I did manage to get a few minutes with a G1 today and I must say that the device feels so much better than my Titan, that capacitive touchscreen is awesome.
Once I get something going I will startup a new project on google code so I can take advantage of the free svn server and start posting my progress

Capacitive touch screens feel great and and quite responsive but they do have their caveats too. The main one is that accuracy of input is lower than with a stylus. You'll have to keep that in mind when you design the UI. You can scale the size of the emulator on screen to match an actual G1's physical screen size (emulated pixels might be mangled though).

Looking forward to it There are some specific android development communities you can check out too for more relevant talk on android java programming. anddev.org I think is a popular site.
Hello. I have been searching the internet, without any luck though of finding the programs i want.
First, i want a program, like ShopSavvy is for the Android, where i can use it on my touch pro to scan barcodes of products and find the best price.
Second, i am wondering if there is a way to have Google Street View on the touch pro. I have already seen KDKobes Google Maps Street View 2.3.1, from our forum. I was wondering though if there is an "official" or "fully working" program, as in KDJobes program unfortunately, location-data support and GPS integration aren’t working with this version of Google Maps.
Third, i want a program, like I-phone has, for Drinks (bartender?), same cool skins and graphics environment maybe?
Fourth, again like I-phone has a program where you record a song on the phone and then it goes through the internet and finds you possible matches.
Please, bare with me, as i a m new and maybe i didn't have enough luck or "easiness" finding these type of programs i want. Yes maybe i saw some "looking like them but weren't afterwards the programs i wanted, cause their functionality wasn't after all what i was searching for and was mislead by their Title Name.
So if you please know any "freeware/ or have to buy" programs that are exaclty as the one's i have described please feel free to post and tell me.
Thank you very much in advance,
Chris
let's see
1. barcode readers:
i-nigma barcode reader
QuickMark 3.3
Aura - but donno if this still works.....
2. Street view is officially supported by the latest Google Maps
http://www.google.com/mobile/default/maps.html
3. didn't heard of such a program for wm
4. i know a program it's called Music ID
hope that helps try to search harder next time
search diamond beer for a drink app that turns your phone into a glass of alcohol , if you mean a bartender then just do more searching also the site Fuzemobility.com is now your best friend go there all the time look at everything there . if you still haven changed ROMS on your phone i suggest you go get NRG's new winmo6.5 build 3.0 ROM . it has alot of improvements over the stock ROM , anymore questions just ask me
Is there an app that uses the GPS to track how much you've cycled and your speed etc? I think such apps exist for the iPhone but I'm looking for something for windows mobile.
gotta love fuzemobility lol

Shop savvy is a great program. Our closest thing is "Barcoroma"
Google street view. I use google maps from NRG'z Rom and I can get street view on it.
Drinks IDK your on you own for this one
Song recognition. Well try out Music ID works great for me.

Where does everyone go to get there the PPC software?
I go to http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php, although its not complete list and new releaase of an application can take a couple of days to make it to thier site. I find the site easy to navigate and search. The catagories and rating system help for filtering.
