New use for your cell phone - Off-topic

Anyone tried this.
Scan Life

nice find, looks like a very nice concept

Apparently that depends on which type of barcode it is and the quality of the camera the phone has. There is a guy over here that was developing something called Barcorama that would take a picture of the barcode and "read" it back to you so that you could use the data in it. But I did not hear any progress on that recently. There are java applications for dumb phones with nice cameras that can tell you info on supermarket barcodes or books. It is real and not very new idea.

App Idea: Business Card Reader

The Android platform should have support for OCR, what is needed is a multi-task app for OCR services, or a simple Business Card Reader that store directly to contacts.
That would be awesome... I hope to see OCR of all kinds soon.
The barcode reader supports reading of datamatrix barcodes. Im sure OCR could be done.
I like the barcode reader, but no one uses the cot damn barcodes on there business cards.
Scan , add to contacts done. Its all there name address telophone number web address email. Added to contacts in 30 seconds

I still have about 200 of my old business cards and waiting for those to dwindle before I order a new stack... I will be putting on a barcode for someone to scan on the next one.

Which app supports the datamatrix?

Barcode scanner. It works perfectly. I showed it to a friend who has an iphone, He went onto iphones market and download iphones version. Which sucked in comparison, the iphone version you had to press on screen to take a photo, save, then click decode.
It would sit there for a minute or two then fail to decode.
the android one automatically decodes after its focused. As long as theres enough light and you keep stille enough. Decoded in a few seconds.
Its demo'd on the google android site.
OCR is one of the things I'd be interested in.
I'm debating making a GOOD financial app, one that supports budgets, multiple accounts, bills (with dates that they're owed), paychecks (with flexible hours, meaning for part time jobs where schedules change day to day...), etc.
One of the features I'd want to add would be an OCR reader for receipts. Scan the receipt once, it picks up any dollar amounts on it (as well as stuff like date/credit card account if it can find it), and the user just has to hit a couple buttons.
Still debating if I want to actually make it, the best money app out there atm seems to be FireWallet, but they're going to charge soon...

OCR application
Well, OCR technology applied in several fields, like business card, receipts, document and more. It is not only working at iPhone, Windows Mobile, but also Symbian, Android.
WorldCard Mobile is another app to make good use of this OCR technology, doing business card reader for iPhone. I knew this company is also developing for Android now.
I thought there is already a business card reader application.
This ROM is an example... (look at page 1)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552274&highlight=business+card+reader
IIRC Google Goggles can perform namecard OCR, atleast on languages using Latin alphabet.
I think there's still room for a dedicated business card reader app. I tried Google Goggles with a couple of business cards and it was a bit clumsy in reading them.
I too tried google googles on some business cards.
It found some stuff, but missed most of it.
There is also the question of integration into your contacts.
Goggles does not do that.
ScanBizCards
I don't have an Android phone, so it's interesting to read the feedback on Google Goggles - and happy to read that some members feel there is still room for a specialized business card reader since I happen to be the maker of one, www.scanbizcards.com, available on the iPhone for now but will port to Android as soon as I have some time!
Besides doing a better job with the idiosyncracies of business cards, a specialized app can do much more than just scan the card.
Patrick
ya google goggles does that for sure but its still beta. so once they get all the bugs out that is one of the main features of that app.
here ya go
Here you go this is that bizcard apk: http://www.4shared.com/account/file/134939817/2d95066b/BizCardReader.html
Yep,
I have a business card reader app that came with my Hero.
Got to say it works very very well.....

Just put this on my phone. Works really well! I was surprised by how accurate it was. It is not perfect, but it is very good at tagging the information about 95% of the time.
Thanks for the link.
Earlier I said that goggles does not integrate into contacts. It turns out that the business cards I choose, were not scanning very well. Goggles does integrate, but not anywhere near as well as BizCardReader (the app above)
Bizcard was getting accurate info, repeatedly. Goggles was giving me a different output with every scan.

Looking for a few different apps (can't find them by searching)

After seeing iPhone apps and trying out a G1 for a while, I'd like to have some of the apps available on these phones on my Tilt. The problem is, I can't find some of the nicer ones available for Windows Mobile.
Netflix App - I'd love to have one of these but from all my searching I can't find one. I know you can browse their website with a browser, but it would be so much nicer to have an application that pulls up just the data I need quickly and easily.
Price Scanning App - I loved this app on the G1. You scan a bardcode and it tells you the product name, gives you reviews, and shows you a list of local prices and online prices for that product.
Yellowpages App - I saw this on on the G1 (and I think it's out for the iPhone too). It's just a yellowpages.com search interface inside an app.
Restaurant Search and Reviews App - Something that either uses GPS or something where I can enter my zip code. Allows me to narrow down restaurants by pricing and type of food. Reviews would be a nice plus.
Webcam App - I had this on my G1 and loved it. I was able to connect to my panasonic webcam and view it by simply launching the app.
Are any of the above available for Windows Mobile?
Windows Mobile has never had such complex apps.
Maybe buy an iPhone or a G1?

Alright, here is my contribution to the XDA society:
Barcorama was found in less than two minutes by using the googlized search option. Just click HERE!
As for your webcam app, you can use orb.com to access more than just your webcam from your PPC, or PDA.
The other ones, I didnt really get too far into looking at, because kidNamedAlbert is right, those are some uber complex precesses.
Remember, also search first and when you feel you just can't find it, search again. Chances are, it's out there.
hope this helps
I don't understand the want or need to have 10 different apps that all search for some very specific thing when one app that can do it all is much more convenient. what if I want to look up a restaurant's number, call them, make a reservation, and then get a map to their? should I have to use 4 different programs to accomplish that, or should I just use one (google maps)? heck, Live Search does all that, AND can also do it with voice recognition. and tell you the weather while you travel.
If you look hard enough you can find all this functionality with existing WM apps, as per above.
Try microsoft's free windows live for what you are looking fore and more. It's fee.
www.wls.live.com
Or even Google maps at www.google.com/mobile.
Enjoy it.

Totally agree!
In addition: GARMIN MOBILE XT in version 5.0 does it all too - has in addition even a CALL DESTINATION feature.
I just do not understand the need of people to have web application 'installed' in their devices! Well, maybe I am getting too old for all that, who knows?
<Damn, now I sound like a smart ass, LOL>

Get Date Printed on Pictures taken using N1 camera

Dear all,
Does anybody knows an application or trick to enable the camera application print the date and time on the picture taken from the mobile camera??
i have Eclair 2.1 non rooted device.
Thanks
Don't really know why you'd need this; the date/time is in the EXIF data like all modern cameras.
That and it has to be the most obnoxious thing ever on pictures. I can't tell you how many times people asked me to remove it because they were too dumb to turn it off in their settings.
If you really want this you could add it later with software, or a command line tool like imagemagick.
I vaguely remember that the desire cam had an option for this.

I too would like this. I have to sometimes take pictures for work to show things were completed and installed in the way they requested and the date and time stamp proves that I was there on the date I was supposed to be. And not a lot of people even know how to view the EXIF data.
Once I too wanted the date on my photo and I used a tiny freeware called Photo Dater.
If you're rooted...try the Desire Cam mod. It has option to turn this on.

Amazing apps

I have found some really amazing apps for android and thought i should share if anyone else might need or want them.
8pen: The keyboard has been reinvented for mobile devices. Was intended for phones but works great on my tablet. going to be using this as my main keyboard.
freenote: I was looking for a note taking program that can be used for classes. college level physics mostly. so i needed something i can write/type words on as well as put in a far bit of diagrams or equations. This one was the only one i found that did it all at a bang up job to. the controls may be a bit confusing but can have multiple groups of notes per class. save it and back it up (to restore a backup i only know of copying the back up folder into the main folder).
Win-Remote and URemoteDesktop: both of these are great computer control programs. win-remote only works with windows, URemoteDesktop works with both windows and linux. can make win-remote hidden in the taskbar and start with computer to have some fun with someone. (i have played joke on my bro and everyone was laughing was great). URemoteDesktop shows up in the terminal as a java process so its even more hidden. batch file and shell can run without constantly being on screen.
Font Changer (Root): is a nice simple font changer program. there are others i personally found this to work the best and be easiest to use. can be used with any launcher, also changes fonts in web browser, many apps... basically everything unless the app says otherwise.
AccuWeather: i have found this to be the most amazing weather app. has nice clean non clutter widgets that link to the app as well as show information. the app it self is basically a whole weather channel in your hands. even shows radar and 15day forecast. also very nice eye candy. it also tells you more about the day then just sun or rain. there is a lifestyle forecast section that tells you risk of asthma, cold, flu, mosquito risks, migraine risk and much more, even a dog walking forecast. lol
that's what i found. if there's an app that makes you go WOW please share cause i would love to know of more.
FreeNote looks like exactly what I've been looking for for taking notes in my engineering classes. Tried a few last semester and they just didn't work out very well. I tried replicating a few things and looks like it works very well and is easy to switch between modes (typing, hand writing, drawing).
I searched for about an hour tonight and finally found my perfect math handwriting note taking app = handrite!
Sent from my Flashback HC-TAB using XDA Forum App
Hey guys I'm a newbie, and I'm trying to find how you guys DLed these apps (I need freenote or handrite myself for classes) the only links I've found, when i try to download them i get stopped with this message
"There are no Android phones associated with this account. Please sign in with a different account."
How are you downloading on the G tablet and get it to recognize the thing?
if any of you know which direction to point me in even that would be a huge help!
try the amazon appstore and 1mobile or put a rom on it that gives u the market

Sounds like you're facing a bug. On your gtablet you can download the apps from the market. If you're having trouble, remove your gmail account, reboot, and readd your gmail account to your tablet. This should fix things!
FreeNote FTW!
Wow... I just wish I had FreeNote when I was taking classes. Thanks for posting this OP!
Nice apps. FreeNote is very nice. The kool apps keeps coming and coming...Thanks.

[Q] Ebook reader on glass

Hi everyone,
I don't know how to develop software in Android, but I eventually hope to. I mainly registered to put forward an idea, and to know if it's already available or if it's even possible.
I want to read mathematics books while I run and bike. So far this has not been possible. But with the launch of Google Glass this looks possible. I enjoy the exercise and the scenery while running and biking. But the problem is that it's also huge waste of time for me. So I don't go running as much as I could. There's nothing to think about other than what's around you and just putting one foot in front of the other, so it even gets boring sometimes. It would be better if I can get some of my work done while I'm running, and enjoy the exercise, fresh air and the scenery at the same time.
Typically people can listen to audiobooks when they run. Or there are android apps that will read from a text ebook so they can listen to it. But you can't listen to a mathematics book because there are symbols, and those symbols are most often there as graphics, not text.
It would be great if Google Glass has an ebook reader on it, or can tether with a smartphone and display the screen, so a runner could read a book while running. You'd need some controls to turn the pages, maybe zoom, go left, right, up and down, while the book is open. And a navigation system to open a new book.
What are your thoughts? Can it be done?
Thanks.

1) It could be done, but that is not what glass is meant for. Glass is designed for less than 30 second, limit one minute, interactions.
2) Watching a youtube video on glass for 3 minutes in the latest update hurts my eyes because i'm staring at it for so long. Its like when you're developing for it, you get eyestrain if you constantly look at it. Looking at Glass for long periods of time hurts.
3) It would be hard to see since it has some viewing problems in light.
4) It would be plain awkward to be running around, constantly looking up and to the right. Plus, you might run into something xD
