AT&T Now offers PDA phone insurance - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

My phone is doing the washed-out thing, and I went in to talk about a warranty replacement. While I was there, I was informed that "since Monday," AT&T is insuring every phone they sell except the iPhone. I was told the insurance covers "everything.. water.. breaking it in half.."
Needless to say, I was pretty pleased..

Based upon my reading, I was under the impression that there was a 1 year warranty from date of purchase, as I've never needed to exercise the warranty myself...
I'd assume that what you're discussing is an extended warranty? Do you know how much it costs monthly and / or if there are discounts on business accounts?
Thanks in advance!

For prices, check the 7th post in this thread: http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=88879

And I JUST recieved my BRAND NEW Tilt in the mail YESTERDAY after calling AT&T Saturday afternoon! Turns out they exchange for flashing problems! Who woulda thought.... Not ME!

It's not really an extended warranty. The insurance covers "Loss, Theft, Accidental Physical or Liquid Damage, Mechanical and/or Electrical Failure after the Manufacturer's Warranty Period has expired." So, it's sort of a superset of an extended warranty.
It's about $5/mo. The deductible is $50 "for losses incurred now through November 2nd, 2008," at which point the Tilt has a deductible of $125 ("Equipment Tier 2", according to http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/en_US/pdf/wireless-phone-insurance-deductible-schedule.pdf)

Hmm, $125 deductible in November? That's the same month my manufacturer's warranty runs out. Maybe I'll reconsider then.
Thanks for the info!

For me, the most important thing is the protection against loss, theft, and physical or liquid damage. The manufacturer's warranty does *not* cover these things, so if you lose or break your phone, you're SOL..

Very true... And it's a small price to pay for $5 / mo... Thanks again!

Insurance for your AT&T Tilt

I just contacted safeware.com and purchased PDA insurance for my AT&T Tilt for $52.00/annually. They repair/replace the device up to $550.00. Since AT&T doesn't even offer you the option of insurance, it certainly is worth the $4.30/month for piece of mind.
Any Luck With This Insuance?
I was wondering if anyone has used this service and has had any luck with it?
I was able to get mine coverd for $650 under my house ins with a $0.00 deductable. It was about $45-55 per year... maybe check into that.

I've used SquareTrade, but not for a phone. Last week I just made a claim on my amp. They're giving me my money back, minus shipping charges. They seem pretty good and it was a seem less process.

Not sure if anyone else is using safeware but I decided to try them. Since I'm in NY they have a discounted rate for NY folks (surprising). It's $52.00/year with a $50.00 deductible. Not bad for piece of mind if I break it by accident. Worse case I'm out $102.00 for 1 replacement.
This "Insure the Tilt" begs the question: "Why?"
I've had the unfortunate experience of having three different people drop mine three times onto a tile floor in a hospital. Nothing broke. Still works too.
Had someone else broke it, would it have been covered by the policy and would I have been able to collect from them or the person who broke it? If not, just fork over another $300 and get another rather than pay $60 year for insurance.
I'm wagering I'll replace it with another within two years time anyway. So marches technology. Why again, pay $60 to be locked into what will soon be old technology?

Can you currently buy this phone without a new contract for $300? Wouldn't we have to buy it at full price as a replacement?
FYI, my homeowners policy will not insure a phone if it is under $400. Since I got mine for <$200, it does not qualify. Also, my wife's iPhone missed it by $1

You're not locked into anything... it's renewable each year. I purchase my phone for $300.00 from AT&T. Replacing the phone will cost $500.00 as you can't get the phone for $300.00, at least not from AT&T. The insurance also covers theft, accidental damage, cracked screen, etc. I rather pay the $52.00 for 1 year and have piece of mind if I do drop my phone or something falls on it/etc. I may not be lucky as you to drop it a number of times and nothing breaks. For me it's worth it at least for the 1st year. After that I'm sure the prices of the phone will drop so no need to renew.
I can buy the Tilt from ATT for $276 with no contract (using my business account @ 45% off).
Do these insurance companies just pay "cash" for the replacement or do they send out a new phone?
Unfortunately the average user doesn't have a business account. Would be nice though.
As for the replacement they send out a new phone. Most likely a refurb as HTC/AT&T does the same for in-warranty replacement.
I just got the ATT Tilt from ebay few days ago. I have not really used it yet. I am going to check with safeware about the insurance policy.
Thanks!
EDIT:
I just checked the safeware.com to get a quote. They did not have an option for "cell phone". I selected "laptop" with the coverage of $600. It turns out the annual cost is $69 with $100 deductible.
How did you get the coverage for your cell phone? by calling them? or do it online?

So you effectively spend $169 per year for a replacement Tilt?
In a year, AT&T will probably sell them for $50 just to get people online with a data plan.
Remember when you had to pay for a Motorola Razr phone? Some places they're free now with a plan.
You have two companies for the Cell phone insurance.

Con- read the below and also read the contract. What a useless contract, they don't cover any defects or break down from use, plus tons of other crap about environemental variables, basically it is only loss insurance or if you smash your phone, which you'd have to do if it stopped working to get it covered.
Thank you very much for the inquiry. A damp environment refers to the actual environment in which a unit is used in. For example, a unit is kept in a greenhouse which has higher than normal amount of humidity, and due to the constant exposure, internal parts begin to rust. A liquid spill however, is a single physical event which causes the unit not to function, which is not caused by the environment. The electrical breakdown refers to electrical components which stop working over time, whether it is caused by a faulty part or simply wear and tear. Similar to the other explanation, a power surge is a single physical event which damages the unit. A surge hits the unit and burns out components or parts. I hope that this helps explain the difference, but please do not hesitate to contact me if any further clarification is required.

Subject: Question about service
I’ve reviewed the portable electronics agreement on your site; these appear to be contradictory based on interpretation.

Accidental damage is defined as an unexpected and unintentional external event, resulting in physical damage to the insured equipment. Examples of accidental damage include, but are not limited to Drops, Falls, Collisions, and Liquid Spills.
http://www.safeware.com/index.php
Power Surge
Comments
A liquid spill(#9) could be considered a damp environment(B4)
The failure of an electronic device is a type of “electrical breakdown” (B3) and would be an unintended, hence an accident(#9). Power surge is also a type of electrical breakdown(B3).
Can you please clarify as to what is actually covered or not covered in the contract terms.
Thank you

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it cost more than $400 to get a replacement from AT&T without a new contract if it were rendered inoperable ?
My homeowners covered mine at a recplacement cost of $600 and I'm paying $30/yr. I know that renter's insurance is cheap and will cover it and more.

Yes. The replacement cost was irrelevant to them. Don't try to make sense of it.

Accidental Handling Warranty in the US

Does anyone know if squaretrade will work on an imported Galaxy Note? I'm not about to drop the money on it if it is questionable whether or not they would cover a replacement at least up to the $600 limit.
Just looked at newegg and I could have spent $20 more for the opportunity to get a 1 ($60) or 2 ($150) year ADH plan. Bummer for me, but maybe it will help somebody else.
I have never broken any of my electronics in the past, but this giant screen on such a thin device has me worried.
im also curious about this
use safeware they cover it for 2 years for 78-ish dollars without theft, or 1 year for 98 with theft

Thanks for that! Applied for 3 years protection against theft/accidents on my "$700 tablet" for roughly $160.
I have square trade on my Galaxy Note; paid $69 on Black Friday for 2 years coverage.
SquareTrade will not cover it with ADH. The $89 warranty is only for parts and labor on the fault of the phone. If you break it, you are responsible for the damage costs. Also there is a $100 deductible on any claim.
I have used SquareTrade for the past few years, and unless you buy a device from a phone store, they will not warranty ADH on them.
Their warranties are 2ND to none if you can get the ADH on the device. They fixed an iPad, and iPhone, and paid me back for my Galaxy S II that got burned in a campfire. But since I bought the Note on eBay (New even) they will not provide me with ADH on it.
Any Ebay purchase, new or otherwise is not eligible for accidental.
Ity was said that they would not warrenty a device that does not have a US warranty...but I called them up and gave the guy the website(handtec) and he said that I could get accidental if I ordered it from that website. Now, handtec does offer their own warranty where they will help you out for 24months after your purchase, or if it's within the 1 year Samsung warranty they will act as a middle man. But this is not on their website. Either way, I bought a $98 2 year AHD from square trade for mine, thinking at least if I do bust it, I may be able to get $600 out of it. If they say it's not covered, I'll ask for my $98 back since it was never really valid anyway.

That is a shame, I have had ADH through squaretrade on a previous phone and despite not having any claims was very satisfied with the terms of the plan that I got from them.
Safeware seems to have been around for a long time, and most of the complaints I have found are against their extended service plans rather than their ADH/Theft plans, and they seem really flexible in which devices they will cover. I had to do a tablet plan because their only unlocked smartphone coverage was for iPhone, while all the other smartphones listed were carrier specific.

I bought my note new from amazon, but the note itself is from Germany.
All they (safeware) asked for proof of ownership at the time of application was the serial number, and I had to pick a second proof of ownership that would be provided in the event of damage or theft, and I chose 'receipt' since one was sent in the shipment with my device.
They never asked where it was purchased from though, so it doesn't really seem that important to them I guess. All they seem to care about is the cost to replace and availability, not whether the device or seller is native to the US. If a replacement can be attained at the coverage amount specified then it should go through.
This is most likely so that they can easily cover ebay purchases.
i have 2 years ADH thru squaretrade. paid $89 + $99 deductible.
bought the phone from amazon (a reseller)
talked to several different ST reps and they all confirm my phone is covered for $600
I already mentioned that I got 3 years of ADH + theft protection up to $700 through safeware for just under $160, but I did not mention that this is with $0 deductible.
Squaretrade says it must have a 90 Day US warranty for their warranty to be effective??? Thats why I went through Safeware.
I've used squaretrade for the past ~10 years, not too many troubles. I do have a bit of concern on their discrimination when it come to smart phones.
The iPhone is a cheaper warranty and you can also add an additional year. You can't do this with any other smartphone (HTC in particular).
I know it's due to the masses of isheep (ie - economies of scale) but for their purpose it seems like it shouldn't matter.
My two cents.

Why wouldnt it matter? Iphone parts are ubiquitous and everyone knows how to fix them. An esoteric n7000 which almost no one has in the usa (a year of owning this phone, still never seen someone else with one) means a tech will need more time repairing it and parts will be hard to find.

If you know of other sellers who offer an extended warranty plan, please provide details.
Squaretrade on the $249 usd 16gb is $23 plus applicable tax. There is an optional "accidental" coverage for an additional $27 for accidental drops, liquid spillage and some other scenarios. For 2yrs of coverage as well.
This warranty is transferrable if you happen to sell it or give it to another person (why?! lol)
Walmart's isn't bad for an extended manufacturer warranty - iirc Asus gives us a 12-month warranty for the same things (defects, power surges, etc) so $28 for three years is actually a hella good deal. Staples', on the other hand, seems like a ripoff. $150 for a $200 tablet?
Squaretrade
I got the $39 Warranty from Squaretrade (website now shows $49). Had to mention that I saw the $39 price and that it said that price would expire Aug 17th, and they gave it to me.
I've personally not used them before, but I know a few others that have and had good experiences.
I use American express for all my electronic purchases. 90 day accidental damage, theft, loss coverage and extends the length of the original warranty for a year. If the item is not repairable they will refund the original purchase price.

Its after the 90 day accidental damage that gets you though... even an extended original warranty doesn't cover that.

Is insurance void?

OK, So i unlocked the bootloader on my phone and i said goodbye to my moto warranty, BUT when i took the phone out on a new contract with phones 4 u in the uk, i also bough separate insurance in which i pay £6 a month + The flat rate of £20 a month for calls and texts etc.
I wondered if i can claim on the insurance if i smash the screen for example even though the boot loader is un-locked?
If not, is there any point in paying the extra insurance costs?

You cannot void insurance.
Is it that you can void warranty but not insurance, then?
Providing that you live in europe, you can't void your warranty by rooting/unlocking your phone, no matter what BS manufacturers could tells. This is the law.

While you won't void the insurance by unlocking the bootloader, it's probably better for you to be putting that money away on your own. Worst case, you dig into it to replace your phone. Best case, 2 years down the line you have enough to buy a new phone. That's better than giving it to some company. If you never break your phone, you'll never see that money again. I guess if you have a history of being really clumsy, insurance is a good idea, but otherwise it's almost never a good way to spend your money.

[Q] AT&T insurance/warranty

I bought my note 3 a few weeks ago, and I can still buy into the insurance thing through AT&T. I know samsung offers a warranty and that warranties you can pay for are typically junk. But I figure I should ask before letting the possibility close. Should I get the phone insurance, or is it safe to assume that anything covered by AT&T would already be covered by samsung?

At&t insurance is nice because ANYthing that happens to your device is covered. But you have to pay the deductible. I don't believe Samsung's warranty covers water damage, or theft/loss.
