I would consider buying one of the new generation XDA's (XDA II). They are supposedly equipped with bluetooth. The main advantage with this would be the possibility to buy a bluetooth GPS mouse, or a standalone bluetooth enabled GPS reciever.
The problem with the non-bluetooth GPS mice is their need to use the serialport at the bottom of the device to communicate. If you wan't a car mount kit with amplified speaker built into the back of the cradle, they are only sold as powered mounts which use the serialport for charging.
Thus you would have to use the GPS mouse with charging capabilities and let the charging dongle for the mount with amplified speaker hang loose.
Or you could buy a car mount without power, but then you would not have the amplified speaker functionality.
The amplified speaker functionality is great for spoken directions from some the map softwares available.

I first tried Tomtom bluetooth but often ecounter no power for long distance travelling. I sold it afterwards and switched to a wired solution with in car charger. It is perfect.

Your profile doesn't say what country you're in, and the answer varies by location. In the USA, Routis is a top-notch application for navigation. Pharos is absolute garbage. Deluo, the company that makes Routis also makes a very nice GPS receiver that works well with the XDA I and XDA II.
Bluetooth GPS receivers are rather silly, in my opinion. Totally pointless, since you need to power both the PDA and the GPS, so...you might as well wire them up. The Deluo kit has a nice arrangement with a lighter socket and a single cable up to the device to carry both power and the GPS data.
I would like to know how you get on with the Arkon, I have the same one and it is unusable, every time the phone changes to a different cell you get that doomp-de-doomp sound, when the phone rings the noise from the speaher due to direct rf breakthrough is absolutely atrocious and makes the system unusable.
I'm planning to build an RC heli UAV, with a control and video uplink through 3G network, based on either stripped down Kaiser, or Eten Glofiish x800. I would need software that would allow Kaiser to receive commands via the internet and transform them into commands for the control surfaces of the Heli, probably via the USB port on the phone. Being able to tap into the raw data from the GPS chip on the phone would also be nice. Can someone with some tinkering experience advise me if this is feasible? Thanks.
try some BT to serial adapter and connect the controls to that serial port.
Should be way easier then using usb.
Great idea. My concern with that is adding another wireless link creates more latency and another potential point of failure. But lacking a viable USB solution, this is worth trying.

As I understand it you are going to try and use the Kaiser as a remote control for a remote control helicopter? Can I come and watch the crash?
The lag time in response is going to be so large you will not be able to control the heli - you need instantaneous response that you will get with RADIO control/RF - internet and no joystick will kill the copter.

I want to use Kaiser as the brains of the heli. Kaiser already has 2 built in cameras, GPS chip, status lights (for switching various components), 3G network (serving as a video and control conduit), a powerful CPU for basic video compression and autonomous logic, memory for hi-res photo storage, All of this is packed in the weight of a few dozen grams (once you strip case, screen, and keyboard), makes it a perfect platform to build a heli on.
The main issue as you correctly point out is latency. On ATT 3G network it's b/w 100 and 200 ms. This seems to be sufficient to control a remote craft, but I havent tested it, provided there is virtually no delay in other aspects of delivering commands to the controls.

I can state catogorically - that no matter how much I love this phone and the current ROM - there are ALWAYS some "pauses" when you are using the internet - where "something" chokes and pukes.
When you are flying a remote control even a 1 second hiccup can be fatal to your craft.
I concur - I believe that latency will be the issue to overcome.

wouldn't there be a way to just add a program with no gui front in to run it. The video and everything lags it. I'm sure you could do something you have to remote into to adjust.. super simple.
I only picked Kaiser because it has 3G, 2 cameras, and GPS chip. If you can suggest an alternative HTC phone, I'd be glad to hear it (no x7500 please). Don't forget though, that the phone will not be used to render graphics on screen, which, as I think, is its main bottleneck due to missing graphics drivers. Also, it will only run programs necessary for aircraft operation, and none of the bloat that most people's phones are loaded with.

Nah, they use it to control the craft. It's surprising that it has even made news. I guess its all due to the iPhone hype. If they had made iPhone the brains of their UAVs, that would be a story then.
That would work well witht that phone, from what I understand it has something inside of it to tell it when it's level and upside down.
I think what he wants is real time operation of an aircraft. That iPhone story seems to say that the iPhone was used to send coordinates to the aircraft and they aircraft did the thinking.
Are you planning on having the phone inside of the heli or using the phone to talk to the heli? I've worked with many WM 6.0 phones and ALL of them seem to go slow. What is needed is a faster processor like the Diamond or Pro will have.
iPhone has a set of built in accelorometers. Unfortunately, I think they are not sensitive enough to use them to stabilize a heli, but I have to look into that.
Yes, they used iPhone to send directions to the UAVs, which can be done with any cell phone via text messaging or EDGE, or wireless, or Bluetooth, or voice-modem, frankly, making anything that has iPhone in it a news item is getting ridiculous.
Diamond and Pro are rather on the expensive side. From my experience with Wizard and Wing, the hardware specs are not bad, it seems the bottleneck is graphics and running many applications in parallel. In my case, it would only be video transmission through a service like Qik, AI for autopilot, and commands sent to that AI through 3G or as a fallback, SMS. While it sounds resource-intensive, people have made homebrew autopilots for their planes using 8Mhz cpus.
My main concern is how to get the AI autopilot soft running on the smartphone to interface with motor and servos. So the main issue is getting a low level USB driver that would allow in/out via USB, but in analog fashion.

Not that you don't have some valid questions... but realize how ludicrous the concept is.
There are plenty of cars out there (well below $50K) that have integrated bluetooth and GPS (and other voice activated things like music) so that using your phone (which is a poor option in comparison to dedicated solutions) should not even be necessary.
Buy a car based on the cars functionality...not whether you can plug in an easily expendable device!

Hmm... just wanted to point out a few things to consider:
1. The life-cycle of your vehicle should extend well beyond your phone.
2. For a $50,000 vehicle, it will hopefully have a GPS navigation built-in.
In any case, if the BT compatibility is that high on your priority list... test it out when you test drive the vehicle. I don't think the dealership will mind, and if they do - pull off the side of the road during your test drive and configure. The Internet is a wealth of information for manuals and procedures to configure without the help of the dealership.

I am NOT basing my decision on this question...but it is a factor as to which cars are worth looking at that HAVE these features. I chose $50K as an arbitrary number because I can't even think of anything more expensive that will do these things.
My real question is which cars out there play well and integrate well with our device (or future devices)?
Many factors (for me) go into a purchase/lease decision:
-safety ratings
-fuel economy
-comfort
-cost
-style
and one of them has to do with bluetooth integration...
For example, I know that the Toyota Prius has bluetooth integration. How is it? Are there others that do? What are your experiences with it?
So...while I really and honestly appreciate the "get real" advice - which is sound - if someone(s) could comment on the specific questions, it would help as I begin my search.
I have a ford edge with nav and sync. Phone syncs quickly and works well. I can push music over the bluetooth through it, it downloads my phonebook so I can hands free voice dial. The only thing the phone doesn't support in sync is reading text messages over it. Some issues I have run into since I upgraded to 6.1 though is after I pair it, then get out, it likes to set my ringer to silent, but not all the time. I Don't use phone for nav, I have found the screen too small to see clearly when driving and it eats the battery. I hope this helps.
I think it would be great if HTC, or a 3rd party hardware manufacturer would create a small and consolidated infrared adapter for the HD2. Or at the least, a bluetooth to infrared transmitter that would serve as a station. I'm looking at having something for the HD2 that competes with RedEye for the Iphone, found here (http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/02/redeye-turns-your-iphone-and-ipod-touch-into-bona-fide-universal/).
I'm also aware that there are a lot of existing windows mobile softwares, like seen here (http://pocketpccentral.net/software/remote1.htm), that enable the use of an IR port to act as a universal remote, just like RedEye does, but it is limited to phones having a built in IR port. Which is why I was greatly saddened to find out that the HD2 doesn't have an infrared port, which killed my idea of the HD2 not only being a media powerhouse within its own enclosure, but also within my home.
That being said, i'm going to spend the next couple of months doing everything I can in my power (emailing as many HTC and party companies as possible), asking that they create an IR adapter for the HD2 that would connect to the micro usb port. If possible, the ir could be attached by a resistant bendable cable, allowing you to bend the infrared under the HD2 in the direction of your entertainment center. If anyone doesn't see this as being feasible, please correct me, before I make a fool of myself with HTC and it's partners. Everyone's thoughts on this topic will be highly appreciated by me!

There was a pocketpc app called Total Remote that had a ir transmitter that plugged into the 3.5mm headphone jack.
It was at http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/totalremote but I don't know if you can get them any more. doesn't look like it.

I bought Total remote (on ebay, the last one in the world?) with the sound to ir converter that goes in the headphone jack a couple of months ago to experiment with on my Mogul. Life took a serious detour and I got sidetracked. The mogul has an ir port. Total remote shuts down on my Mogul when I push any of its buttons. Total remote works on my ipaq (without the sound to ir converter) so I bought a mini usb to 3.5mm cord on Amazon to try the sound to ir converter with my Mogul. Same thing. I push a Total remote button and it shuts down.
My true intention with this converter was to try a trick I learned on Engadget and capture my remotes signals on my ipaq, put those files (each individual signal as an individual file) on a pc with audio software, mute one channel, and save to my mogul (Engadget used an ipod) as a song (wav file) and play the song (remote command) with the sound to ir converter plugged in.
I haven't gotten that far, but will hurry up and try it with one signal to see if it works.
Anyway I've been planning on getting an HD2. I'll have to see if this works on it when I get it. I'm not sure how Total remote works. It works on my ipaq (which has ir) without the converter.
I'm guessing it is coded to send the signals out the headphone jack if you don't have an ir port (maybe a setting I didn't think to look for... yep there it is, a setting for infrared sending device with choices for irda or Griffin technology ir device). I'll have to give it another shot with my Mogul... Well, with that setting the program doesn't turn off. Now to find the right tv setting... It doesn't work with the Mogul.
At least with the right setting it doesn't shut down the program. I tried that setting on my ipaq also with the converter plugged in and it worked so I think that confirms it doesn't work for the Mogul. Not sure what that means for the HD2.
There is another setting for a CCF mode. I don't know what that is. Some sort of file. .ccf I don't know what to do with that. The ccf mode takes me to what seems like some sort of explorer with a home, device and macros tabs, what looks like a search field, a menu and a open ccf file button that goes to a file directory it looks like. The program has a library of devices it can control as well as the capability of sampling remotes and the menu button in the ccf mode seems to link to that sampling capability. I was able to complete a sampling, but don't where that sampling went. I need to find that file to try the Engadget method. Oh, it doesn't create a file I can get to. I just have to plug in a line from my ipaq headphone jack to my pc mic jack and play the signal (push the remote functions button) and record that signal on my pc with the audio software.
Griffin had the patent on this sound to ir converter technology and now the iphone has a dongle. Does that mean another lawsuit for Apple or is Griffin making their dongle or a third party? Griffin does make lots of iphone accessories.
Oh, also check out the tv remote control thread under the Mogul. There's a bright guy there working on something. I was going to help him, but I'm a moron. If some type of dongle will work don't worry about a flexible cord, just flip your screen. Total remote has a setting like that so it will open upsidedown each time.
Total remote is a free download now and you could make your own dongle out of a pair of headphones if you want to test it out on your HD2. Just cut the speakers off and wire a couple of ir leds on. I think all you have to do is make sure you wire one ir led on backwards meaning one side has its channel and a ground wired on correctly to the ir led and on the other side do just the opposite (i guess there's an in and an out or a pos and neg on the ir led). There's some info on the internet explaining how to do it. Actually the other thread can point you in that direction too.

I read on the Redeye Mini website that the company will write software to support other mobile devices if the demand was there. The redeye mini attaches the the headphone jack, so if we could get them or some other developer to write software for it to run on wm6.5, we could use the redeye mini on our hd2s. It looks like it might be the same setup that griffin used for total remote. I would also be very interested in this.... I'm gonna send redeye an email expressing my interest. You should do the same.

I must have missed that Engadget article, or must not have been looking at that site yet, for me to have missed the article you reference. I'm definitely going to check out the Mogul forum for the ir remote control development that you mentioned. And I'll also check online for DIY IR as you specified. Zarathustrax, good research on your part as well. I'm sending RedEye an email this very moment. Again, awesome job everyone, and I look forward to us reclaiming Infrared Control for all of our Windows Mobile Devices, whether it be through outside manufacturers, or our own DIY community!

This is the email that I sent to RedEye, and I sent a modified one(neglecting android concerns) to Microsoft and HTC as well. I'm hoping that, if it isn't already in motion, a partnership is formed between all these companies!
"I'm emailing you in regards of the support of redeye being manufactured for Windows Mobile Devices. There are a vast number of Windows Mobile Devices, as I'm sure your company is aware of. If concerns are that there isn't enough demand for it in this Mobile OS, then my only rebuttal is that it could be explained by the lack of IR hardware in many recent Windows Mobile Devices. I don't know whether it was in the push for thinner, longer lasting phones that cause manufactures to remove this piece of hardware, which was present in many past mobile devices. But, if there is one thing that I can acknowledge, it is the fact that many of the users of these devices has not forgotten about IR hardware and technology. Many of us have been introduced to it, and really want it back, and want to see it return to WM, either built into the devices, or eternally through dongles produced by reputable companies as yourself. What I'm trying to say is that, if you were to introduce IR dongles for WM devices, it would not only be accepted by many, but it would flourish, just as much as it has with apple devices. If standard is a concern, for producing the software that is compatible with these mobile devices, then I guess Windows Phone 7 Series is a bright and stable place to start introducing dongles for. Also, I'm pretty sure the Android community would go crazy if a dongle with proper software was released for them. And, if it is possible for the android community to receive a dongle, then the windows mobile 6.5 community would probably be just as excited to receive one as well. I know many HD2 owners would would love to be able to control their media devices by IR, just as much as the Iphone users are enjoying it. But, to be fair, I'd be happy if it were released just for Android, and for Windows Phone 7 Series. And if it were released for Windows Phone 7 Series, then I think it would be easy to make it compatible with the Zune, which would add even more demand for such a product. In the end, I'm asking you, Thinkflood, to release a product that is 100% lacking in the Android and Windows Mobile Community. I'm sending Microsoft an email as well, just in case they're not aware of this either.

Interestingly, Mr. Griffin described his idea here. Easy enough to give it a shot, only concern is about shortcircuit protection on my Leo. I seriously damaged the FM receiver of my Blackstone doing similar things.
this idea is super cool. schematics of that patent look really easy, can be done in 5 minutes. What is more important is to get the software algorithm right. I wonder if total remote would work with this DIY IR adaptor.

I'd hate to carry that thing around and connect to everything I'd like to control. We're looking for a pocket solution of existing components technology. Total remote uses a data base of most audio/video equipment and you can control most just by changing your setting. So you can change the channel at your favorite pub.

Just some thoughts. Theoretically the HD2 flash can emit some percentage of its light energy in IR range. The photo diode, required for recording of the IR signals to learn commands from a remote, seems to be in place too (the camera is too slow for that, but the proximity sensor may have enough bandwidth). The question is: is there any information on the possible bandwidth for the flash diodes and for the prox. sensor? And is it possible to control them that fast ?

There are several ir transmitters that plug into the headphone jack out there.... we just need to get a developer to write some remote control software that will output the correct audio signals to the ir transmitter and that has all the different ir codes for the devices we want to control.

Hi all, long time reader, first time poster. I'm working on a Nexus 7 Car Head-unit install, and figured I would post my working through the install, hardware, software, and kinda just help all the tons of people I see out there who have the same idea, but just have no idea how to go about it.
This is ment to be half a tutorial (once everything is done) and half a brainstorming to give me idea's for things I haven't thought of or considered. I'll be coming back and updating this OP with pictures, and the build as it gets worked on.
Goals of the Install
I want to be able to run my entire car off the Nexus. I have already set up wifi tethering from my S3 to get internet into the Nexus, and thus open up a realm of possibilities. Necessary features are Nav, and Music. I rarely call from my car, but in car calling would be a nice feature to have as well. I also go out to the track ever now and again, and adding car stats (boost, RPM logging, acceleration, mapping) would be great. The biggest reason to do the install is that one the hardware is configured, you literally have a ultimately customizable setup that will take years to outdate.

This is where I would love some feedback on on what I may be missing, better solutions to what I have suggested, and just some general awesome idea's!

OBDII Support: (Future Project)
Right now this is not a nessiacty as the hardware to do this could get very tricky. However I know I can read from the OBDII port with a bluetooth OBDII dongel and an app like Torque Lite. However I do own a tatrix cable, and am considering if it would be possible to go from the USB to the tablet, and find an app/write one what allows for the tablet to control the car in real time.

The Two Builds
There are two ways to go about this. The first would be the simple and easy way which is to hack together a charger wired to the power source of the car, and use that to keep the tablet charged. Then run a 3.5mm audio into the amp, and have sound run from there. There are a few issues with that. 1. There will be no volume control, as the Tablet's buttons will be part of the center console. I suppose I can run a controller to the amp, that will let me adjust volume. 2. This will not allow for the possibility of adding OBDII support.
The second option is to purchase a micro USB dock that does audio out. Hack it apart, and run the audio to the amp, and the power to the power. This would be necessary if I want to do a full USB ODBII connection (I believe, please tell me if I'm wrong), and would be much "cleaner" when it comes time to take the tablet out of the car for any reason (hardwire sync, parking in the "ghetto").
What I need Help with
Have any idea's. Tried something similar and have some tips. Have suggestions for apps, hardware configurations I haven't listed, or just generally want to say "sick man". Please let me know. I would love to have some people who are also interested in doing this join in on my build, and we can work together to eliminate any issues to make tablet installs easier. I will be coming back and updating this OP throughout the entire process so please look for updates!

I'd like do do this in the future... I hope someone comes out with a custom set of apps that make this really cool and easy... maybe even a custom ROM.
Basically what I'd want out of this is:
Auto-on with power. Auto off after 10 minutes of no power. FM radio tuner. Maybe the ability to connect a rear-view camera (wifi?). Bluetooth OBDII would be good enough for me.
I'd also appreciate the ability to connect to at least one camera and use it as a DVR, but I think that it would probably be beyond feasibility with the Nexus 7...
What I really want to see is the ability for the Nexus to be a full Bluetooth head unit. I want it to pair with my phone for both internet (already do this, works great) and have it act as a headset essentially. This is the part that appears to not exist anywhere. The ability for the Android Tablet to act as a hands free device. I mean if a car stereo can fully integrate with your phone read your address book, start and answer calls hands free, stream music, everything from your phone then why the heck not the tablet! Someone needs to write the BT stack that can handle that. Apparently it doesn't exist for android. It exists for Windows, but not Android. That is just wrong. Are there any car stereo head units running Android as their OS? If so can someone dump their rom so we can see what all it can do for a project like this?

I have had mine in the dash for a couple weeks now, streaming Bluetooth to the radio which I relocated, also using NFC sticker to turn on WiFi, bluetooth , set audio volume, screen brightness and start playing music. Tasker to put unit into car mode, its sick! I'll be following, really interested to see what you come up with. My car is N 06 altima and the Nexus 7 fits almost like a glove where factory stereo use to be.

Can you upload a picture of your install? I own a altima and I am looking to install the Nexus 7 on my dash as well. And also, did your factory stereo have bluetooth? If not, what are you streaming bluetooth to?

If anyone can post on his site, tell him to connect two middle pins in usb plug, then it will start charging from the lighter socket.

Does anyone know of a micro USB dock/cable that then splits to power, usb, and audio? I know of one's that will do 2 of the three, but nothing that does all three. Maybe just a USB and power one, and run the audio straight out of the 3.5mm on the N7.

Hello, I'm considering permanently mounting a nexus 7 in my car. It seems like the perfect in car device.
With this in mind I have updated my CarHome Ultra app to better accommodate the Nexus 7 screen. I will be posting a new video soon showing it running on the 7.
I've looked at doing this as well, I've always been prevented by the issue of the FM radio. I use the car a lot in places where I get no or poor connection via the phone, but the radio works fine, so loosing it would not be an option as I use the FM radio quite alot.
I've been trying to figure out away to control an FM radio via the Nexus so if anyone out there has any info it would be greatly appreciated.

Load a hand full of mp3s on the device. Then use Tasker to switch to switch to your favorite music player when reception is bad

I am actually currently doing a very similar project with a Nexus 7 and my Nissan 350z
I am planning on installing the Nexus 7 inside my dash (to replace sat nav dash)
HOWEVER
what about routing the power button on the tablet? Because If you cant access the power button the tablet will only get power when the car is on and if you dont use the car for a day or two the tablets battery would go flat and next time you turn on the car the tablet would go into charging mode (screen with charging battery only) and not boot up into android jelly bean.
Theres 2 potential solutions:
1. Open the tablet and wire the power button to a custom one, however on opening it I have found the button is actually a physical push press button and cannot be wired.
2. There is potential to change a file on the android system to tell the tablet to boot up when a charger is plugged in, check these threads:

Never had any problems with it.
Despite working in the car industry and loving gadgets and mod-ing...I haven't really seen what people are up to these days in terms of car mods. The Nexus 7 makes so much sense and looks great!

Frontier silicon are the only company that I can find that do an app that can control an external radio and stream it's signal to the tablet as opposed to picking up the signal over the cellular network.

now the problem with this is, aside from building the module in somewhere' the audio out as it feeds out of the module, but I was thinking I could use some form of y split cables near to my amps 'in'.

For improved gps I was going to use an external bluetooth gps reciver then allow mock locations on the tablet, there are also a few apps that help with this.

Hands Free
The only work round I seem to have found atm though far from perfect is this

it allows you to to 'cut in' the audio stream, but (can't fins the tread now will keep looking) the guy who was playing round with this was having audio issues.

before my mind starts melting again;
How I plan to implement the tablet is to use tasker to wake the tablet when power is supplied then shut of down after, if I disable all kinds of connectivity when tablet shuts down then reactivates when it wakes up everything should run smoothly. Power will be cut because I'll wire in the ignition live, like you do in a stereo anyway, an this shouldn't put a drain on my battery to much, an if the dash build is good it shouldn't be too much of an issue extracting the tablet to hard boot anyway.

Volume and audio quality is another issue that needs to be addressed.

Seems like an ok work round.
Another way would be to install a direct in-line volume control as suggested in other threads, and put in an external DAC or hardwired EQ.
