Upgraded TyTN II to WM6.1, but... - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

...i can't see the Today screen enhancements. namely, the new scrolling ribbon. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around this?
PS. been a stalker on these forums for a while now and now I'm a member!

um, like, wait for WM7? Provided it gels with the Kaiser?
6.1 does have a few enhancements, granted, but your ribbon is not one of them. AFAIK, the scrolling ribbon is a feature of WM7, and of the SmartPhone flavour to boot, not of PocketPC.
If you pine for the ribbon, try some independent apps like Throttle Launcher, Ultimate Launch, PointUI, or suchlike.
Welcome aboard, by the way. Live long and prosper

If you saw the new "ribbon" feature in action by way of screenshots, then I must concur with the last poster and say that you were looking at WM 6.1 Standard (non-Touchscreen). WM 6.1 Professional (touchscreen) received mostly transparent (non-cosmetic) upgrades between 6 and 6.1.

thanks for all the replies guys. dang! i was hoping those screens were from the touchscreen version. I did have pointui on wm6 but it was a bit of a battery drainer. I was really hoping WM sorted things out: on the kaiser, without a third party app, you still can't get simple tasks like one click 'new sms' on the today screen or assigned to buttons. i have the HTC action screen installed for this purpose. was hoping to do without it.

Kaiser vs. Fuze with TF3D

Ok, I know there are various threads that deal with this topic and i have read through them but I had a more specific question.
The Fuze has more memory and faster speeds than the kaiser but my question pertains to TF3D on the devices. Even through the Fuze has more memory as stated above, TF3D runs fairly well on the kaiser. I wanted to know if the general populous beleives that the Fuze would be worth the price and if it would in fact be much better than the Kaiser. I currently use Leo's Manilla 3D V4 and besides a few known issues, I like it. It is fairly fast and stable for the most part. Do you believe that the performance will actually be simialr in speed once the true potential of the Kaiser is unlocked? The Fuze also has a camera with "auto focus" this sounds like the same crappy camera from the tilt... Anyone have any input on that? Is there anyone out there that has both devices or at least used both devices? Thank you for your time.
P.S. If you do not have a helpful post then please don't post to this thread. I have read many forums and reviews so if you feel this post is a "waste of your time" then please by all means do not post to this thread...
I too have touchflo 3D on my Tilt/Kaiser, which I love, (ironically it uses the fuze theme for it too) but the fuze in store just seemed soo responsive, the screen soo easy to use, and best of all no bevel on the screen! i hated that on the kaiser. but for me the big deal is it looks nice, vga screen which also looks nice, and the g-sensor that it has with it. Mix that with the people here at XDA and id be happy with paying 400-500$ full price for it.
I have seen the fuze (I have a Tilt) and even though the screen looks smaller (I have not measured it compared to the Fuze) the resolution is soooo much crisper! I also realized that it has some hardware that makes it responsive to position changes, Opera will automatically adjust when you set the phone horizontally! I am seriously planning to upgrade to a Fuze. Shadowline, do you have the roms/themes for the tilt so that they can look like the fuze? I saw the captures on the bottom of your message and I would love to make my Tilt look like that... thanks!
Thanks for the input guys. I can purchase the Fuze at employee pricing but I am still waiting to see what that is. ATT does not give their employees that great of a deal on the hardware. Either way I think the Fuze may be the way to go. I still believe that there is so much more that we can get out of the Tilt for the time being and thanks to the experts here at XDA, we are seeing that become a reality.
to thoughs who have tf3d on there kaisers, doesnt it not alow it to shut down? or was this fixed somewhere?
On my kaiser running TF3D and Leo's V4 Manilla 3D rom, I have to manually turn off TF3D then I can cycle the power on and off. It is a little annoying but other than that I have no issues. I can turn TF3D on when I want to dazzle friends and toggle it off when I want more speed. All in all I like that rom even with the flaws.

Anything new worthy of replacing Kaiser ?

I've been google'n for 2 days and haven't been able to find anything worthy of an upgrade from a Kaiser ..
My mom needs a pda/phone and she wants my trusty Kaiser, but unless I find something worth having she's not getting it.
The Touch HD looks fantastic .. but .. isn't coming to the US [email protected]#[email protected]
Anybody know of something coming soon, available now I should be looking at ?
ATT Fuse doesn't look like any kind of an upgrade.
Thanks for your comments !
What I use the Kaiser for :
#1 Web Browsing
#2 VPN via PPTP to work network, and telnet to a as/400 machine from there
#3 Handful of WinMO apps that I use for various things (weather, poker blind timers, etc)
I occasionally talk on the phone too
hey man AT&T Fuze, it's called the Raphael on these forums, it's a sexy phone and has Opera 9.5 built in. and it can do everything the Tilt does minus some buttons and has a G-sensor
-Mike
Next to the KAISER I had the MWg ZINC II for a while. It had an incredible performance, much better than on the TYTN. However, there are 2 things I couldn't stand on that thing: no hardware softkeys underneath the screen and a weird keyboard with strangely arranged characters. Other than that it was a great device. I still would have gotten used to its keyboard but I couldn't stand the fact that it did not have any HW softkeys underneath the screen.
However, even though this seems to be an interesting question, I do believe that this thread is misplaced since you ask for something "that is not the KAISER"!
It might have been better placed in the GENERAL BOARD?

I guess I could run over to ATT and look at one. It just doesn't look all that appealing at first glance. I see nothing on it other than a VGA screen vs the tilt, and I'm losing the "tilt" function that I've grown to enjoy.
I don't think I'll ever use a G-Sensor for anything. I have opera 9.5 on the Tilt.
Maybe I'll like it better in-person.

I'm looking for opinions from current kaiser owners since they'll know what I'm replacing. I want something better than a kaiser. Only a kaiser owner would know what that is.
I never use my softkeys so I don't think losing them would be an issue.
I guess the Fuze might be an option but the screen on that thing looks smaller than a fuze. I want a BIGGER screen
Well, I upgraded from an 8525 to the Fuze, and am throughly dissapointed.
The screen is awesome, amount of memory is awesome, and the keyboard is awesome.
Everything else sucks. The hardware buttons at the bottom are extremely spotty. If you don't press the perfect spot, with the perfect amount of pressure, the device presses the wrong button for you.
http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446246&highlight=hardware+buttons
I flashed to the Elite ROM, and that made things a little better in general, but the usability of the device is getting me down.
So I'm off to research the Tilt/Kaiser.
I looked for what's the next upgrade after the Tilt/Kaiser but didn't find anything worthy. I think much of this stems from just how significant the upgrade the Tilt/Kaiser was from it's previous models, the 8525 and 8125.
I looked at the Fuze but while it does have some additional features and speed, it's not the leap ahead that the Tilt/Kaiser was. The Touch HD which you already found is the only thing I also found that I'd consider a worthy successor. I thought of buying one and having it imported but from everything I read the radio won't work here in the USA.
So for now and the foreseeable future, I'm still on my Tilt.

I think the radio works fine here, you just don't get 3G.
I'm not in a 3G area, so maybe I could overlook that. It seems like I tend to turn OFF 3G on those rare occasions when I am since it sucks the battery down so bad.
Touch HD looks very nice but maaaaaaaaan it's pricey !

I think the hardware for a G1 looks good, too bad it's running android and not winmo.
It's got everything I want. Nice display size, hardware keyboard, 3G support
Nobody took a look at the Touch Pro(Raphael) or Sony X1 ?
Touch Pro is the Fuze, which was mentioned in the first post.
Racer i would look in the Raphael Forum and see if the problems/complaints are going to affect you terribly, from what i gather i'll be happy with the upgrade.
Best of luck!

Mentioned Touch Pro in first post (att fuze)
Not really much, if any, of an upgrade.
Sony X1 might be possible, but it's SOOOO darned expensive !
Another option would be an unlocked Palm Treo Pro.... runs win 6.1, decent phone, same specs as the tilt I believe

I'm returning mine as well. The D-pad is useless when surfing the net, the keyboard is really cramped compared to the Tilt, and button placement very odd.
The screen is amazing and the amount of RAM phenomenal, but it isn't quite as fast as I'd hope for and there just aren't enough programmable buttons to make it useful for me.
When my ETEN Glowfiish M700 died I spent weeks debating -- do I spend $600 for a new Tytn II or do I go for broke and get a Touch Pro for $900?
In the end, while the features of the Pro sounded very nice, I decided I just better save some money and get the kaiser.
Very impressed with the Kaiser so far. Video slowness not-withstanding it is still much more responsive than the Eten. And there is certainly tons of help, software recommendations and more available on these very forums
I recently came into a little extra money, so I could get the Pro now if I wanted to. But I'm going to keep the Kaiser and wait to see what the WM7 machines look like next year -- or should I say in two years
Perfectly happy with my Fuze. TF3D, VGA screen, abundant storage room, extremely fast and responsive, absolutely love the hardware KB (many more buttons without having to press the FN key) and more. Suffice it to say, I am extremely happy with my Fuze. Very much so.

Tilt. Which I still have as a backup. Especially after my OIL fiasco.
EDIT:
Let me do say that the stock rom sucks. It is extremely slow and constantly lagging behind. I've flashed a new BlackStone radio and a custom rom and I absolutely love it. But let me emphasize, in the store, the Fuze is slow at best. It even has a ATT tab with all of their bloatware locked to that tab. However, NATF has already done a stock rom fixing most, if not all of the slow/laggy responsiveness. I have literally flashed every single rom already cooked for the Raphael/Fuze and found my favorite (today). This thing flies.

Windows Mobile 6.5 Fugly, Ok, or Sexy?

Ok I think the UI in 6.5 is ugly as sin and it actually requires additional steps to proceed with basic operations. The new "honeycomb" action, which separates icons according to the lame beehive effect rather than the traditional grid does not optimize user friendliness or user interface.
Well I wanted to hear from other windows mobile users to see what they think of the new OS. Do you think it is ugly as hell, decent, or sexy?
***Please note this poll is based on LOOKS and UI
it's decent, not that ground breaking market blowing innovation that windows mobile has to come up with to compete with..
i wouldnt buy a 6.5 device because its 6.5 (i maybe wont even upgrade my rom to 6.5(cooked))
from what i've seen theres nothing with a more user friendly approach than 6.1.. i like my tf3d the new today screen on 6.5 is just crap
but i have to say that the honeycomb looks nice, havent tried it.. but it looks nice but i'm not sure if it would increase my user experience with it. i would say not
Honeycompb is more than ugly!
Today screen is exactly the same as my 6.1 ROM of my Excalibur smartphone
Oerhaps is more user friendly (At this point is the least MS can do to still alive)
I don´t really like it
I just find it amusing that they find it so difficult to come up with something fit for today's tech.
The pros & cons on UI
The pros
Full image on today
Nicely glass bars
Not at its full works and not so nicely titanium plugin on today but at the end... is a today plug in....
Honeycomb is nicely but zooming images ha s a little scratch on everyone...
Amazing we can change all the icons easily and other fickn **** things! like selection textures and labels...
The cons...
Is a beta work... but is god damn FAST!!!!! even 6.1
Final Score.....
Decent
no doubt, it kicks out 6.1 of my life easily
Plain and simple...it's UGLY! Honeycomb??? Come on guys (Microsoft), can't you come up with something better? Actually, someone else already has. HTC (TF3D) and SPB (SPB Mobile 3). These two kicks the ass out of this dumb interface (I'm speaking of looks). Does it work better than 6.1? I don't know...maybe, that'd be nice, obviously. But if I had a device with this on it, I would STILL have one of the afore mentioned UI's installed and being used.
When I first saw an image of a phone with this bee **** on it, I actually laughed. I thought it was a joke. Honestly. Then, I realize it's real. Very disappointing Microsoft. This'll be the Windows ME of Windows Mobile OS's.
its better than 6.1
too bad htc TF3D beat them to a new ui
l don't think it's ugly. maybe the decent could be better.everybody could finally accept this new os I think. maybe you could say that its ui is so similar to the smartphone. but the actually is that we can gain more fun from the moving of our figures. but we should clear that the wm 6.5 is only the transition of wm 7. then ,could accept it ?
yes...
is like the great amazing change betwen WM6 and 6.1 jajajaja it was just the.... SMS threaded?
Come on guys.... let it run... maybe when we got in our hands the new core 6.X.XXXX we will need great devices to gain run the new os...
peace guys.
it looks ok for me...but I'm still playing with & customizing a super fast beta right now.
I am glad to see this poll is leaning towards "decent" rather than SeXxy or Fugly. I always appreciate other users views after I have already decided my thoughts on something.
I think its sexy.

wm 6.1 or wm 6.5

Hi
I have tried many different roms and are currently at dutty 2.6.
How far has wm6.5 rom come?
I wish to start a thread where we discuss what is best of 6.1 or 6.5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=500523
you guys rock
The way you take no prisoners with people who might not have time to trawl through a couple of thousand posts before asking a genuine question. You guys really are as hard as nails... no scratch that, maybe youre inadequate teenagers struggling to find a meaning to life beyond a slightly disappointing smartphone?
Hi there,
Don't judge everyone by some people's attitude on here...
It is a tough question though, but it would be good to hear peoples views on whether they prefer wm 6.1 or wm 6.5 - and why
I'm just changing from Miri's 6.5 v 5.2 rom back to Dutty's 6.1 v2.6 EXTREME, purely for the simple fact that I love the customisation that Dutty has done to Manilla and the integration to facebook/contacts seems better on Dutty's rom than Miri's.
Don't get me wrong, both roms are constantly being developed and both roms have their advantages, but for me, Dutty's 6.1 v2.6 hits it (and 2.7 will be better!!!)
I'm sure there are more features to 6.5 and it is supposed to be better screen operations for finger rather than pen, but the only thing I really noticed is the new start menu, which is good, but not very customisable.
Been round 2-3 times with these 2 roms, but think I always end up going back to Dutty's.
Give them both a try though as it is each persons perspective on what they prefer from their HD.
I am not being hard and I don't mind helping, just look at some of my posts, but the problem is every couple of days someone asks: Is this rom better for me? Is X rom faster than Y rom? Can you recommend a rom for me?
Just do a search in this rom forum to see how many have been asking the same thing OVER and OVER, or better yet just look at the last few pages!!
The thing is we are all here for the same reason, we all want the fastest, greatest etc, but it is all subjective. The rom that is perfect for me is maybe not even close to good for you....
As for being a teenager, lol, I wish
tru and i feel all of u but the question is which rom do u prefer .... i havnt tried 6.5 but i would like to read reviews on the differences....and no opinons on wat u like for urself who cares wat u want this post is basic info on the differences between 6.1 and 6.5.
its funny cause u sr and jr members are here to help us newbies out and u dont... i had to teach myself how to mode my hd and how to change the roms now im teaching myself on how to mod and create my own rom.... i do wana thank u guys for creating these roms but u guys are here to help not talk slick but please everyone google ur questions first before just postin anywhere... but i feel this is a descent thread
i havent tried 6.5 and im not going to
when 6.5 is released properly then the good version will be properly put on the hd
until then its 6.1
My goodness, lets everyone just start a new thread for no other reason than laziness to read and experiment, dont encourage this kind topics as it sets a bad example!
seams to me that "IT" guys have a chip on there shoulder, all we are looking for is a bit help. We are not all computer experts. We all want the same thing though. The best and fastest rom. It does not matter what is good for me is not good for you. We are simply asking a question. And you are the guys to answer the questions. Yes you could do a search and get about 10,000 answers. Do you have time to go thru all them for the one you are looking for. COME ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Once again this is heading down the path of another useless thread as everyone is talking off topic again.
This is why MOD's delete threads like this as they just go round in circles with people complaining etc etc etc.
If you want this thread to remain open, start talking about the topic again, otherwise thread will close very soon. I'm actually surprised its still open.
Anyway, ON TOPIC, all 6.5 is a facelift to 6.1 with no real great improvement.
Thats my 2 cents!!
So true am new to all of this, I've been trying to put the 6.5 rom on htc hd and finding help is not easy.

I don't understand why everyone decline the question. In my understanding the question just ask about the advantages of the 6.5 in comparison to 6.1 ROMs here.
May be this question question the high-number-must-better attidude of many of us but for me this question is adequate and reasonable. No reason to harm somebody.

Maybe this helps: ll you need to know about Windows Mobile 6.5
Relating to this article:
1. Windows Mobile becomes Windows Phone
Surely no reason for our choice.
2. All new menus
6.1: Manula, manila menus, new start menu etc. from HTC
6.5: honeycomb today screen, new menus etc.
Both solutions are more finger friendly -> Its you choice.
3. Flick gestures
Like HTC with manila and some other options on 6.1, microsoft try the same with 6.5. -> Its you choice.
4. Better browser
Most 6.1 ROMs here use Opera and 6.5 the new internet explorer. -> Its you choice.
7. Better looking lock screen
There are many 3th party applications which allow this also on 6.1 ROMs. -> Its you choice.
8. Improved e-mail and messaging
I didn't check this with current 6.5 ROMs but it seems to be, that HTC (on old 6.1 ROMs) made the same.
So, after all this points, for me there is no big advantage between the new 6.5 ROM and the old 6.1 ROMs with HTC applications like manila.
It's only your choice, if you prefer manila or honeycombs, the solutions from HTC or Microsoft.

For me it was the lock screen in WM6.5 that sold it to me. I used to use S2U2 but found it a little bit buggy and would sometimes crap-out when using flipit/gyrator etc etc. The default WM6.1 lock does a job but it's exactly pretty looking.
But the WM 6.5 lock? 'Tis glorious! I'm loving being able to jump straight to different notifications and it just looks so good as well.
Other aspects of WM6.5
I was using Dutty's v2.6 (and had been using Dutty's ROMs since the first Xtreme Test came out) and couldn't recommend it highly enough; it really is a fantastic ROM. I am missing a lot of the nice little features the the Rhodium Manila brings in.
I'm currently using Miri's v6.1 Premium (and thinking about upgrading to the new v7.0) with TF3D running on top of it. I ran with the Titanium interface for a bit but Manila if definitely better for me and the way I use my phone.
But part of me thinks I might just go back to Dutty's v2.6. As I mentioned above, there a just so many lovely little features in the Rhodium ROMs cooked by Dutty that I'm missing. No sleight on Miri's work you understand; there are many bugs reported when trying to integrate Rhodium with WM6.5 so I think the final advice has to be that if you want all the niceness of the Rhodium ROMs (and believe me, they are nice!) you need to run WM6.1 underneath.
I guess we'll just have to wait for the Diamond2/Touch Pro2 to get their WM6.5 upgrades in the Summer to see how Manila3 works alongside WM6.5.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear! Magic!
I used Duttys 2.4 ROM earlier, loved it.
I installed Davideucks wm6.5 rom yesterday, I love the speed of the Titanium menu, feels really smooth, so does the start-menu and mail inbox.
But like dom_mitchell1 i miss some small stuff from manila/duttys ROM.
Things I dont like about WM 6.5 is that I dont think we cant customzie the main Titanium menue, yet? For instance I would like it to launch Opera instead of IE.
I liked the new Manila calendar better.
Today screen only shows one appointment. I dont know why they dont use all that empty space they left in the lock-screen, its perfect for showing multiple appointments.
Moving icons the way you want them in the new sart-menu is a hassle.
Hearing that Dutty is moving to 6.5 is really great.
I bet he will bring great stuff to it.
OFFTOPIC: IMO, the biggest factor for chosing either wm6.1 or wm6.5 is personal choice, based on several factors: functionality, looks, speed, customization, compatibility. Thats why it is really difficult to chose the perfect ROM for everybody. This debate between newer members asking this sort of questions and older members becoming sick and tired of answering them is old and it will last forever, I guess. No matter how many times you say to a new member: go read wiki, etc, there will ALWAYS be smb. new coming and asking the same question tomorrow. I, personally, prefer to help instead of suggesting: go read, but sometimes I am way too lazy to present a proper answer, hence I just ignore the question. I believe this should be the solution to this, but everybody treats it differently.
ONTOPIC: I have tried 20+ ROMs for HD, most of them wm6.1, but now i'm on Davide wm6.5 rom and i dont wanna go back. why?
at the beginning its the looks. I guess i just grew tired of the dark, black HTC customization. Also, manila was not suitable for me, i didnt use 70% of the features, i guess: didnt use favourite people tab (its easier to dial directly from phone app.), didnt use financial info tab (not interested), didnt use internet tab (i can easily just open Opera from programs) etc.
Wm6.5 is finally moving at an acceptable speed, the Start menu looks great (although it lacks customization mostly), and from the home screen i can listen to music, see photos, see the wheather (by using titanium weather 2.2) and I can use some HD-quality pictures as background. Also, email, sms lists look neater, more classy. the softkey menus are bigger, more finger-friendly. These are reasons enough for me to use wm6.5 and not come back to 6.1. Not to mention being a smart-ass among my friends with HTC HD and stock ROM.
So if you go rather towards new, imperfect technically-wise ROMs, I advice you to go to 6.5. It is fully utilisable. I actually used the previous Davide ROM for a week!!, which is quite a lot of time in my recent days. If you prefer much functionality and perfect, 100% reliable device, go for wm6.1 roms..

Thats my 2 cents!!

Yes, like 6.1 was a facelift to 6.0, and 6.0 to 5.0. So what? The latest beta versions of 6.5 are clearly faster than 6.1 and you do not need TF anymore, which by itself slows down WM.
fair question. my advice is to sprite backup ur data. try out each new 6.5 rom cook then, if u don't like it, go back to ur previous rom & do #1 spritr restore.
personally, I found early 6.5 roms really slow & unresponsive so I too abandoned the concept for extreme 2.6.
I have decided to wait til it's officially released. I don't think it's anywhere near ready. oh, and it didn't recognize my sdd card.
the big improvements for me were the big X in top right corner (close button) and the opera like IE browser.

Any news about WM6.5 on Diamond 2?

I have heard that WM6.5 was released in April or May, but until now,
it is still a question mark...
so anyone have heard about the timetable of wm6.5 on Diamond 2?
I am waiting days and days..
WM6.5 was released to manifacurers on 11 May.
I've read somewere that HTC will release WM6.5 for Diamond2 sometime in september this year.

thanks
although it is a bit tooooooo long, but happy to hear that has a timetable
Is it really much better than 6.1???
I agree with the fact that 6.1 isn't finger friendly at all...
However the touchflo3d improvement made my diamond2 awesome...
At some point, I wanted to try spb mobile shell... But I don't want to loose
the htc program menu or the finger-friendly menus...
I'm wondering what 6.5 will bring which is that awesome to have people waiting for it... (I personally found that they failed to upgrade the today screen... the new one is really poorly made...)

WM6.1 is Thumb freindly.... Especially with my big thumbs/no nails and TD2.
But really the menues are nicer but the TD2 already has that. It's a nice facelift though. You'll like it more than 6.1 after a week.
Try It

go to the SPB website and download the trial and see if you like it, I did and it's miles better than TouchFLO
I've played around with 6.5 in the developer emulator. It doesn't look so good to me, and it's far inferior to TF3D. The only interesting thing to me is Windows Marketplace. So I'm hoping HTC's release will have the same TF3D UI but just with 6.5 behind instead of 6.1.
6.5 has a lot of UI improvements to make it more touch friendly.. Love it with the emulator
I agree with the marketplace... That'd be one nice thing to have.... mmm... as long as the price go down ($25 per product on PPC compare to $2.5 on the iphone... )
I tried SpbMobileShell on my axim; the fact that they don't overload the menus... is a bummer for me.. Other than that, I agree it's more practical.
I think touchflo3d is graphically more appealing but feature and customization wise Spb is a far better product.
