GPS Tuner - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

I was looking for an offroad GPS navigation software and came across this. So far I am not impressed. I have been searching for faqs and tutorials but so far no luck in helping me understand. Do you all have any tips for gettings som maps on here?
Or do you have other off road GPS software you would recommend?

For my off road trips I use DeLorme Topo USA for maps and X-Map for the actual mapping/GPS software. I've tried all the free stuff out there but it doesn't work anywhere near as well. It saved me from getting lost in Moab a few years ago.

So I could import maps for backpacking and activities of the sort?

Bartimeus I use a lot GPS tuner, its a very usefull aplication for saving/planing routes.
There is a soft that runs in your desktop PC called Map Calibrator ( I am sure that cames with gps tuner) It has a tool to get online maps (grom m$oft virtual earth) already calibrated, just exporththem to a jpg format.
I live in mexico, so I use those calibrated JPGS as a background for the oficial vector maps from the local goverment, just aling the layers and voila!

Yes but, DeLorme uses propriorty software. The topo map package, covers the entire USA on 5 or 6 CD's, you can get it direct from DeLorme for about 100 bucks. If you do allot of back packing or 4 wheeling like we do, it's worth the $$$. The package comes with WM and Palm software and you just import the quads from of the maps you need.

The latest version of GPSTuner doesn't even really need maps, you can download from sources such as Google maps on the internet. These are saved to a cache on the device.
The program is really good, the best I have found for the PPC to be honest.

Best GPS Software for Kaiser?

Hey Folks -
I'm looking for the killer turn-by-turn software (with US Maps) - that I can digitally buy and install to my MicroSD. I've done a number of searches online looking for a product I can order and download (yes, I have the fever - IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION IS NECESSARY) and get working with.
POI's are very important to me as is speed and stability...
Can anyone chime in with their preference? Please also supply a URL where I can purchase your favorite application...
Thanks!
StacT
uh tomtom?
there's a million threads like this, just use a search.. u'll get ur answers instantly and won't have to wait.
Having said that, I tried Destinator, TomTom, Garmin XT, TeleNav and I still stayed with iGo, which I love above all others.
Some have cool features like traffic and all that.. some are just pain in the ass (destinator).. so if you can - try it all before u buy.
Of course - I know about the players (MIO, TOMTOM, etc...) but can't find a digital distributor for just the software to install on my kaiser (like pocketgear or handango)... do you have a link?
http://www.navngo.com/pages/global/eng/where_ro_buy
scroll down to USA
wow.. they're actually really close to me, like 15-20 miles from me..
Anyway.. they have excellent US maps, at least I'm very happy with CA map - very detailed, over 2 million POIs.
Thanks for all the thoughts so far, but neither of them fits the bill -
1] The software must have North American/USA maps... iGo doesn't
2] The software must be downloadable...
Thanks!

Uh, cheap? It's free and sucks since you're download as you drive so a lot of the time maps just time-out. Mio Maps is one of the best, and TomTom is probably the best as far as being user friendly and simple, but, TomTom is pretty slow compared to Mio.
How about iGuidance v.4?
I've been using it for a few months. It has text-to-speech. The only problem is, you might i need GPSgate as some of the WM6.1 here doesn't refresh the screen often enough.
I've used TomTom too, it was nice but doesn't have text-to-speech.
I've used TomTom and it was pretty good, user friendly... only thing I didn't like about it was the routing and as the screen is touched it'll take you to the menu.
I've switched to Garmin and found that the one which suits me well so far --- more detail on maps, nothing popping up while touching the map on the screen, and looks a lot simpler. Its navigation software is not as "realtime" as TomTom, but is probably the most simplest to setup, install, and use

I don't know of one of the majors that is. With bandwidth costs they rarely fancy giving you GBs of map to download. Just buy one on a disc.
does anyone know of a good free one which allows you to put your own maps eg a photo of an os map or jpeg in for calibrating for camping hiking walking about woods ect.
I have been using a combination of TomTom and Google Maps. I use Google Maps for most of my POI's since they are updated, contain phone numbers, and are just plain easier to use. The TomTom POI's aren't that fantastic I've noticed. But I will take the location I find in Google Maps and then use TomTom to navigate me there since navigation in Google Maps isn't really turn by turn and can't redirect you automatically if you miss a turn.
My only complaint with TomTom is that you need around 1GB of storage on your SD card so you need a large one (I'm holding out for those 32s!) and it looks ugly when installed on the card. Random files and folders everywhere and it has to be on the root of the card. I'm a neat freak when it comes to file layouts so it drives me crazy.
what about ms live search?
I used it a few times on my recent vacation, it worked very well. Same benefits and drawbacks as google maps, but I think I like it's interface better than google maps.
Live Search has an arguably better navigation setup that Google Maps. GM closes when it loses it's data connection so it's worthless between cities where cell coverage is weak. MS does a better job of caching the maps and will stay active, showing the route and turns even when the data connection is lost. if I could only have one of them for road trips, it would be MS Live Search.
I've had no problems using iGuidance other than on several occasions, it took about 3 minutes to open for some reason. I also use Live Search and Google for a quick find when I need it.

haha i do the same exact thing,.... now if somebody could make a program where with one click u can transfer the address from google maps to tomtom, i'd pay for it
co-pilot live 7 will interface directly with MS live search if they ever release the NO CHARGE upgrade. it has been announced and was scheduled for release this month
BTW I paid $199 when Co-pilot 7 was released last year but the current price is $99 i guess the <$100 competition is getting to them.
I use and like Co-pilot live USA. I can't speak for other maps. the software comes preloaded on 2 gig SD card but you also get it on DVD. I copied the SD folders to my 6 gig SD card and all worked fine. the activation key is stored on local file sysem. but if you have to do a hard reset you can reactivate on same phone with no hassel.
for more info see www.alk.com
I have copilot as well, but at the $99 price point. The WM version is very nice. It comes with companion software for the desktop that just wont work on my vista laptop though.
Still for $150, you could buy a stand alone gps. But I thought about it and I always have this with me, so why buy another device? I didn't want to carry one.

What gps software to use for hiking / geocaching?

Hey all,
I want to use my Tilt while hiking or geocaching. While the navigation software like TomTom is cool its not what I'm looking for. Instead something that shows breadcrumb trails and waypoints would be better for me. Something like the default on the eTrex or similar? I'd prefer free but am willing to pay for the right app also.
Thanks!

Maybe that program could be useful for you.
Edit:
You can import google earth maps, you can import/export Paths/Routes/Tracks and you can import/export waypoint!
Edit again:
It's a 14 day trial
$33.99 for a normal license and $65.43 for a pro license
GPS Tuner is fantastic for hiking. It does the trails and waypoints as you want, and is able to import and export to Google Earth format so you can see your path on your PC too. The only drawback to geocaching is that when the phone goes into standby, the GPS chip shuts off, so you need to get a program like AE Button Plus to force the phone to stay on with one button click, and turn off the screen with another button click. I tend to use a BT-338 external GPS receiver when I geocache, however, because it is much more accurate than the built-in GPS in the Tilt. (It has a Sirf III receiver chip as opposed to the Qualcomm-whatever chip in the phone.)
Falcon, eh? Colorado Springs here!!!
Run Gps
Run GPS is awesome. I use it for hiking & crosscountry skiing. It works great, even in stand by mode
I use GeoScout for geocaching - links to geocaching.com directly which is nice - pulls down caches, logs, maps, etc.
For Geocaching, I recommend Beeline. http://visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/default.htm It doesn't display maps, but it does handle lots of waypoints. Mine tilt is usually loaded with about 5000 geocaches. It also display cache information from the gpx file so caching is paperless.
I tried GPS Tuner. I like some of the features. It will download maps over the air. This is a nice feature. It doesn't handle a big waypoint database very well. After about 150 waypoints, it starts to slow down.
Neither is perfect. I don't hike without goecaching, so Beeline is my choice. If you're mainly hiking, I think GPS Tuner is very nice. I watch the release notes for both and wait for one to suit me better.
I see DeLorme's Topo 7.0 will work with a touch-screen PDA when used with their Street Atlas 2008 mapping software. Might take a lot of memory for all the map data on a card though.
Nice thing is that you can use it in rural areas as it wouldn't require an active connection to an online mapping server like TeleNav or others.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'll be trying out most all of these. I did download beeline last nght, and it is Very eTrex like, so probably the closest to what I'm looking for. Too bad you can't do background maps on it though.
I tried my kaiser with a number of apps for some topo nav/geocaching, none of the apps seem to work very well. The biggest problem for me was battery drain. If your doing caches you can drive to you'll probably be ok, but if you have to hike an hour or 2 the kaiser doesn't cut it.
best app was beeline but I'd go with a standalone gps device.
i use gps with UK os maps for mountainbiking. i have bought a big battery off ebay (about $10), 2800mAh with replacement back (its about 2x thicker than standard). it will last about 7 hours on continuous gps and i also take the standard one for backup

If you want to use the tilt to photograph, you can use KaiserTweak to enable GPS photo which basically puts your gps coordinates in the photos metadata (or something like that)
I regularly Geocache myself and have myself searched for the best navigation software to use for this pastime. I have tested just about every application so far mentioned in this thread but nothing, and I mean nothing, comes close to TrackyPro. GPSTuner was pretty good but TrackPro beats the lot of themo. It is perfect for Geocaching as you can download Geocaches from Geocaching.com direct from within the application and also display descriptions of the Geocaches within the ap too! It really is an incredably intelligently written and intuitive piece of software. Please, please try it. You will thank me I promise. And no, I'm in no way affililated with the author of this software!!

BackCountry Navigator
I'm real fond of a program called BackCountry Navigator. Costs $30, and displays the USGS topo maps that I'm familiar with. They're downloaded from terraserver-USA, so they're as current as those kinds of maps can be, and I can have them with me so I don't need to be on the network. Given a few days of spare moments I got my whole state at 1:100000 scale, and all the national forest areas where I go at the more detailed 1:24000. I haven't tried it yet, but it's supposed to be able to get info straight from the geocaching site.

GPS mapping...

I would like to use the GPS on my phone to map my position on a static map or a jpeg. I don't want to use the web at all, I want to store my maps in static images and pull up the appropriate map and be able to find my position on that map
Does anyone know if this is possible and how it would be done?
Thanks.
TW,
BeeLineGPS
I realize you want to be able to import maps, something you cannot do with BeeLineGPS (http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/BeeLineGPS), but I'd still strongly recommend the program. It does not do anything over the Internet but it does do just about everything one could do with GPS data. As far as getting some kind of reference of where things are on a blank map, you can import waypoints or mark them on your phone and you can export the movement you've tracked into KML (Google Earth).
From their website: "BeeLineGPS is a high performance Pocket PC cache navigation and management software tool. Import GPX files and manage thousands of waypoints with the advanced Waypoint Manger. View, manage and hunt geocaches with ease and confidence while having fun, a perfect paperless solution. BeeLineGPS also includes active waypoint technology where a waypoint can trigger a warning window for speed traps, safety cameras or play a sound byte while on a guided tour. Other features include waypoint averaging, altitude profiling and a comprehensive trip computer. BeeLineGPS is the ultimate GPS tool for your geocaching and outdoor needs. BeeLineGPS waypoint database can support thousands of waypoints with over 120 icons to depict specific locations."
It's 30 day shareware that eventually turns into nagware but you may find it's worth the $30. Here's the cab: http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/BeeLineGPSInstall.CAB

I think you should take a look at GPStuner. It does a lot of things
- Maps can be downloaded from the phone, or from a computer and stored on memory card. (i currently have 50 JPG covering 200 sq km)
- It records your track, gives information about your current speed, altitude, average speed...
- You set up points aywhere on the map and it will lead you to them, or search nearby points. I use it for things that do not come on Tomtom, like bus stops, libraries or free WiFi hotspots
- You can save your track and open it on Google Earth
Another similar software is tracky, but I like GPSTuner more
chinomoreno, it's not polite to hi-jack a thread... start another with your question.
You can also use LEM's TrackMe, using it off-line it will store your data on your device until you decide to upload it (by example when connected with Wifi or ActiveSync). It also stores .kml files you can use in Google Earth.
We've kind of moved off topic to tracking software as opposed to being able to find a point on a static map or image... is it really that difficult to do???

PathAway, but it's way more than what you're asking for. You can create a map, calibrate it, then upload it. You can do large maps, small maps, etc.. And you can pull in topo or sat maps in on the fly over the data connection too if you don't happen to have a map already made.

gps software

I just bought a fuze and was doing some searching on here but cant find an answer can someone post some links on install or purchase gps/nav software for the fuze like garmin, tomtom, igo and things like that i need a good gps program
GPS software
Definitely try before you buy.
I like and use iNav's iGuidance. There are versions for both the PC/UMPC and PDA. Its convenient to be able to run the same app on the PC (play routes and etc.)
You may need to use franson GPSgate (I'm not sure for the Fuze). I have an older Mugal and it's internal GPS has issues. GPSgate (a pay for app) allows your phone to be a Bluetooth GPS device, as well as record routes (even to the gpsgate.com).
thats great and all but where do i get these apps i dont mind paying for them.
also i was looking at standalone gps and noticed that some even tell you how fast your travling is there any thing out there like that
http://gpsinformation.org/dale/PocketPC/wince.htm
Outdated page but it gives you a wealth of info to get started on your quest for ppc gps programs. Alot of basic ones are freeware. The nicer ones are payware.
Myself I use Nav and Go (Igo) for my navigation software.
I use OCN8 (http://www.oncoursenavigator.com/). I really like it. The first place to look at GPS software is www.buygpsnow.com. They have most of th popular street navigation programs. If you want topographic navigation programs (off-road) I would look at Memory-Map Navigator (http://www.memory-map.com), OziExplorer (http://www.oziexplorer.com) and BackCountry Navigator (http://www.backcountrynavigator.com). There are other topographic programs available, but these are the three I like.

Most of them do, you just need to set it.
I use Igo 2006 on my PNA, its great!
Although im trying to get some gps app working on my HTC touch PRo....finding it rarther difficult!
Some things to pay attention to:
1) Navigation - detours, methods/options (fastest, shortest)
2) Alerts - speed, weather
3) Points of Interest - categories, how many, usefulness
4) Maps - span, updates, etc.
5) Update methodology - how often, cost, new features, patches, support
6) GPS compatible - NMEA, Garman
7) Compatibility - device, display, OS, routes files, maps
8) Trip computer - average speed, max. speed, time of arrival, etc.
Try the freebies, Microsoft's Live Search and Google Maps for Mobile, they provide maps and directions along with extra online services (gas prices, movies, etc.-).

And definitely check out amazegps.com: free, with moving maps and spoken turn-by-turn navigation assistance (which Live Search and Google Maps don't have).
All the programs I mentioned above will display your speed. You should really look at the screen captures for OCN8. I was never a fan of the 3D display. OCN6, the version before OCN8 changed that. It's 3D map display was excellent. In OCN8, they have made it even better. In OCN8, they added building for many larger cities and will show elevation changes on the map. I believe it is the first street navigation program to do that. It makes the 3D map display very realistic. ONC8 also has a trip computer. It will give average speed for the trip, average driving speed for the trip, total time for the trip, driving time and stopped time. OCN8 has also updated the menus to make them very finger friendly.
The other thing to figure out is which type of map a program uses. The two most common ones are TeleAtlas and Navteq, and also how recent they are.
I've found Navteq to be more complete in the US than TeleAtlas, atleast in my area.
Garmin PNA = Navteq
TomTom PNA = TeleAtlas
So if you've ever used the standalone GPS units, see which one has more complete maps in your area.
i have a quick question about google maps. when you set directions with gps, when you pass a checkpoint does it update to the next one? will it count down the distance to the next checkpoint, or turn?
I was looking at the onc8 and cant figure out what the difference between the 2gb 4gb and 8gb is.
OCN8 is based on iGO8 engine; actually is iGO8 rebranded for USA.

OCN8 is sold only on SD cards -- you can't move/copy it to a different card, so you have to use the one you bought. You pick the size of the card you want to buy it on, depending on how much additional space you want to have left over after the application and maps. I think the 2GB card has a couple of hundred MB left, so if you're planning to use the navigation program and have a lot of audio or video, too, you'd want to buy it on a 4 or 8GB card instead of the 2GB card.
(This, BTW, is a deal-breaker for me; I love what I've seen of OCN8 in reviews and such and would definitely buy it if I could put it on my own card, but I'm not going to pay them for the program AND a large card when I already have a card.)
does onc8 on the fuze move and look like the screenshots on there site or is it more chopy then that it seems to move very smothly
also does the fuze support the sdhc standard so i can get either the 4 or 8 gb card
Yes, the Fuze supports sdhc. I have the OCN 8 on the 8GB card and use it in my Fuze. The map runs very smoothly just like in the demos if you can get the Fuze GPS working. I could not get a fix with any program. I finally found this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=457996. I did steps 1 an 2 in post 1. I then deleted the gps log file names as suggested in post 8 steps 5. 1. and 5. 2. I then completed steps 3, 4 and 5 in post 1. Now the GPS work great with OCN8, Memory-Map Navigator and GPS Test. I get a GPS lock in around a minute.
I thought OCN6 was good, but OCN8 has taken street navigation to the next level. There were several things missing in OCN6 like saving a route to name one, that OCN8 has fixed. OCN8 has all the bells and whistles. OCN4 and 5 had Navteq maps and OCN6 and 8 had/have TeleAtlas maps. I have heard the aurguments about which map datbase is better. To tell you the truth, I have seen no difference. I have also installed Memory-Map Navigator on the card. I have a little over 5 GB free.
sweet o guess onc8 it is then
Screen pin lock compatibility?
Of the applications listed, the only one that I am aware of that keeps the phone from locking is Live Search. If your IT org forces a pin lock after a given number of minutes, that can be a real problem when you're using your phone as a GPS device.
Does anyone know of a turn-by-turn program that works properly with pin lock?

GPS app for ppc (specifically Diamond)

I am looking for a GPS app for my Diamond - WM6.1 that does certain things and do not know which forum to ask for help. I noticed one thread that had quite a bit of information concerning GPS apps. I've tried a few that use bitmap maps and I can't tell from them that you can actually create a route with them. Ideally I would like to use the built in GPS capabilities of the Diamond but I do have a BT GPS receiver also if I need to fall back on it. I do not know how to set up the internal GPS to use with apps. I have Microsoft Street Atlas which supposedly allows you to create routes and maps on the desktop and sync them to the phone but I often have trouble with my syncing and you have to be by your pc in order to create a route that you don't have the map for. I also can't get it to create a route on the phone even if I have the map installed.
I guess I just want a self-contained app that I can install and not need to sync maps (especially bitmap maps) and that I can enter an address (preferably also latitude-longitude addresses) and it will create the route and guide me as I go. Since I have tried several apps that were unsuccessful (for what I wanted them to do) I am a bit leary about spending lots of money just on the hope that it might be what I am looking for.
The Navigational software that was pre-installed (GPS Nav from Bell Canada) works well for most cases but I haven't figured out yet how to add stops along the route and I can't enter latitude and longitude - for non-city places that have no street address.
Any suggestions I can get would be great
Look for Garmin solutions for PPC, www.garmin.com.
Software is free, but you must buy maps.
http://www8.garmin.com/solutions/handset/smartphones.jsp
I had a look at the Garmin site and finally found where to download the app. One question I have is can you enter multiple stops along your route or just a start and stop point?
Also, it says the app is pre-loaded on an sd card. The diamond does not accept SD cards so can it be copied from a pc and transferred to the Diamond? Also it says there are no maps available for North America for the Mobile XT. Am I doing something wrong or is that true. If they are not available for North America then its useless for me.
Do you have a data plan?
I find google maps works well for me, but it downloads the maps as you are going, so if you are charged for data this is no good.
I also have tomtom, this allows you to input longitude and latitude coordinates however the software is not cheap.
