Interesting, but I'm positive instead of upgrading the diamond, most people will just buy the new HTC (Probably a Touch) with WM7.
WM7 will be released at the beginning of 2009. Porbably announced earlier.
It is very likely that the Touch Diamond can run wm7 without problems. But nobody can tell you now...
Since HTC is planning for a WM7 device, they will not offer WM7 as a free upgrade for the TouchDiamond. If enough people buy the touch diamond they might offer this update for some money. Else we have to hope for some good "cooking" from the developers here in the forum...
very likely based on what?
If it's as much of an overhaul as Microsoft are saying it will be, then I'd say not supported. Will probably need a better touch screen.
Rory
withouth support for hardware features like
accelorometer and multitouch it would prob
be a kinda poor experience if it does

Good question
That's why I said: Very likely...
You might as well ask: What might WM7 change that makes it very unlikely that the Touch Diamond will not be albe to run it...
I asked HTC about the Diamond2 WM7 upgrade and they answered this:
"At the moment windows mobile 7 is unknown at this time. I can not give you the exact date when it will release. But I know that there will be a new upgrade will be available soon."
So is this good or bad?
Windows Mobile 7 has high requirements... check out http://www.intomobile.com/2009/05/12/microsoft-pink-specs-windows-mobile-7-requirements-leak.html. The Diamond's 192MB ROM isn't even close to the 512MB required. Although, when it comes out, I have a feeling that our hackers will debloat it and make it run.
But it won't be official, that's for sure.

i have see on youtube many videos with diamond and Winmo7 but its very slow at this time but its work!
You will have winmo7 on your Diamond than wait its nut funny at this time
Here are 2 Videos. The first Video i think thats real its slow but the last Video is so fast i think thats a fake :S
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Cv85Z2O5jk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cm7UZ71uQHs&feature=related
the second video is an APP runs on WM6.5 it's name is THE HOST and it is in 1.5 version now. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685928
As mentioned earlier the requirements are not close enough to W7p, and if you have run xdandroid, the performance is okay but not there yet.
I have seen W7p theme for android, I have tried it and it seems pretty cool
Examples:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8119626#post8119626
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864034
That first video looks amazing. Although I didn't expect WP7 to run sooo slowly.

I think we might be able to install a windows 7 rom on Diamond altough it might not function properly because WM7 needs a lot more RAM and processing speed compared to WM6.1 and 6.5.
BIG BRAINS Reply
The real question is, why would you want to run such crippled software on such nice hardware? Windows Mobile 7 is five huge steps back from real Windows Mobile.

I will work like crap.
A HTC Diamond barely manages to run a W6.5...It does run , but very slow and annoying.
Would`nt recommend going W7 on a Diamond , unless you have nerves of steel ^^

i just hate the 4 gig un expandable memory in the touch diamond and does anyone kno the video recording resolution
No Offense, but what does this have to do with the Kaiser.
Maybe better off in the General General you'll get better answers then the ones you'd get from the Kaiser Fan boys!
oh yeah well im currently a kaiser user have been since jan, i deff want a new phone but which way do i turn
to be honest im a fanboy myself i just want input

I've wanted to play with a n95 for some time now...
n96 in q2-q3 '08 as well...
or, as what I will probably end up doing, wait for nokia to release a touch smartphone....
i answered the kaiser relation question
and the n95 has a better camera and storage
Nokia means no XDA-devs anymore... And you wouldn't want to miss this fine community eh?
Maybe some member will release a cab to increase the memory size... I'm still waiting for the FM-radio, watercraft, lightsaber,... cabs.
Touch Pro could solve your problem...
my vote goes to the n95 for now.i was always a htc fan up until the driver issues and no touchflo 3d.even though the diamond has these i dont like the size and shape plus of the storage issue
well xda devs rocks so there is that.
i dont think the touch pro is coming to orange uk

just to make you on the same page, xda doesn't make devices. the 2 phones mentioned are made by htc and the other by nokia
i meant xda developers not xda devices, i kno there made by htc, its written on my phone
n95!
it's one of the fastest phones out there!
great camera, lots of memory, there are tons of 3rd party apps for symbian, you can play GBA at full speed. it's an awesome phone!
while the touch diamond on the other hand has a qualcomm processor...big epic fail...and every phone with a qualcomm processor will be an epic fail until they start using Xscale again.
i agree with what dude said about no xda, ur gonna miss it!
i mean its a windows ppc, the mod possibilites are endless, IMO
the n95 is sweet to look at, and the functions are awesome, plus the camera is f'n nasty!
but ur really considering leaving HTC ?
why get a divorce so soon?
no u misunderstand im not selling my tytn 2, i love htc devices. besides i use internet sharing something you dont get on nokias. i think.
ill prob switch tween kaiser and my upgrade as ive got 8 gb in kaiser
As far a what your needs are there are a lot of differences between the n95 and XDA, so you have to ask yourself what do I need from a mobile device.
I am in a similar situation, I am approaching the end of my contract and looking at upgrading from my SE k800i to the kaiser. I am however going to wait gor the touch pro to come out and see what that has to offer,
perhaps that is an option for you?
Marc
I wouldn't consider any of the 2 mentioned phones. If I was to change my Kaiser, it would be for the same category, say the upcoming Touch Pro. I want the keyboard and MicroSD slot.
First of all, why the rush to upgrade, it's not like your using a Razr. Have you seen the upcoming 2009 devices? Check out Nvidia's integrated Htc Apx device for one. Thanks to the Iphone, company's are gonna start to roll out some serious hardware evolutions next year, I'd hold on if I were you http://www.nvidia.com/object/apx_2500.html
You make it seem like money's an issue with him. he got the kaiser in January, and is looking for a new toy in july...by the time he is bored again, it'll be 2009 Q1 tech, and then q3 2009 tech.
actually its is. these are free upgrades thats why i cant just get the touch pro on o2
Personally I wouldn't bother with either, okay it's a free upgrade either way but why waste it, and not be able to upgrade to something decent a few months down the line?
The N95 is quite old now, and (in my eyes) a pretty horrible piece of work. I can't stand the S60 interface, I'm not bothered about the camera (which is still only a phone camera after all), there's no way I'd choose it over my kaiser (and yes I know you're not losing the kaiser, but you can still only carry one phone at once, at least if you're sensible).
The Touch Diamond, by all accounts, isn't finished yet. It doesn't really work the way it should, the battery life makes the kaiser look good, and it's just going to frustrate you.
My advice - just wait. Take up the offer of an upgrade when there's something you actually, definitely want out there.
hi peeps, i currently have a kaiser loving it although know i knows theres better
my question to you is, my upgarde is in two days what do i go for
the nokia n95 8gb
htc touch diamond
iphone (ha ha)
or the samsung omnia
i think ive already decided but i want to see your views on this, although apparently the omnia has no d3d acceleration, but does that mean the camera will be odd as with the kaiser, and i remember some one saying on a poll i did that if i got n95 id not be here, which is true i like this place, some you help a lot and i could get ,y head around a non winmo fone.

The HTC Touch Pro
i agree, touch pro, diamond, or xperia
Touch Pro (its an improved diamond so i will shortlist, Touch pro has video out man, present or movie directly to screens and projectors)
xperia have you heard about the RUMOR WM6.5 its probably just a rumor but Sony Ericsson will surely introduce something powerful but non-official support might be limited! htc is taking the lead..
iPhone do you mean you wanna cross to the other side of technology
Omnia looks pretty but Odd resolution and bad graphics run a search
Dude after this thread you made me think of a new toy too
not bothered about the odd resolution. but define bad graphics?

How long do you have time to choose a new phone? In the Netherlands you can choose (with most providers) a new phone 2 months in advance of your new contract. I waited 6 weeks until The Kaiser was available.
well i an decide from anytime i want but i put the order in in two days.
i tell you whatll decide it for me. if some one can answer
how well does the camera perform, does it fudder when panning like the kiser how fast is the capture
and
how goos are videos. the only way i can watch a decent video on the kaiser is switching to raw framebuffering on tcpmp, everything else is knackered
so does it??
i want to know how well it takes photos coz i kno the kaiser is a bit slow on the uptake
and how well it can display videos
does it have a driver
thats the omnia ordered.
less than 24 hours away
Keep us posted bro...I'm also contemplating on getting the omnia..or if the touch pro isn't it then probably I will wait for the official T3....TyTN 3.....
due to unforseen shipping errors, the company thats supposed to deliver my omnia havent. shouldve been here
cool its here it stunning. uncomparabvle to the kaiser, they are just toio different markets.
and im finally able to watch a massive divx movie without the skipping a checking wether im switched to raw framebuffer
Hi guys,
today I talked to an HTC guy on the CeBIT convention in Hannover. I asked him about the release of Windows Mobile 6.5 for the Diamond 1 and he said that he is sure it will come as an update for the Diamond aswell. Diamond 2 will get the update, too. I tested the Diamond 2 today and I must say: AWESOME!!! That thing is so extremely fast in TouchFlo 3D. I had my Diamond 1 in one hand and the Diamond 2 in the other and now I could throw away my Diamond The new Menu for programs is nice, too. All together the Diamond 2 is much better than the Diamond and I think I will sell my Diamond 1 and buy the Diamond 2.
Greetz Frozen-GPU
did you tell him about the release date of diamond2 ?
is it on march or april ?
In fact he couldn't give me a final answer on this I guess he was not the right one to answer the question Only a salesman i think. But in my opinion it's worth waiting for Touch Diamond 2, no matter if it'll be released this or next month. There was another guy buggin' him with stupid questions about connecting HTC devices over bluetooth to his car hands free, so I left without asking more questions...
I mean no disrespect to you, but I really hope that you found the only (IMHO) honest and knowledgeable telephone company salesperson.
That in itself would be an awesome discovery, much more incredible than the 6.5 upgrade for the Diamond
That could be true...
Maybe I better wrote another title for this topic: "Diamond 2 - WOW! Windows Mobile 6.5 on Diamond 1: Very possible!"
Salesmen are really clever, but not in giving technical information
i hope this is true because there are rumors poping up that wm6.5 will only be avaiable for phones with a hardware windows start button
WIMO 6.5 on Diamond 1 not likely
The word from Microsoft is that ONLY the phones with Windows button will ever be supported as a Windows Mobile 6.5 platform. I'd say that minimizes the chance that HTC will take the time and money to develop a 6.5 rom for an old device that will probably be end of life soon.
yet tested our beloved device with a pre wm6.5 and it's too much sloooow and crappy too
I think wm6.5 needs more ram, perhaps could be sane on diamond2 but right now isn't ready to be used on diamond1
Start button?
i don't see why MS is saying it HAS to have a start button. the Diamond had 9 hardware buttons (if the whole pad is broken down into all its functions) i'm sure that one of those buttons could be allocated for that use

I totally agree with that Put a Windows Logo sticker over the "Home" Hardwarebutton and voila ^^
I have to admit I'm a bit puzzled as to why this is a stumbling block. WinMo 6.5 will presumably be a whole new ROM and I imagine would have a few chefs cooking with it. We've seen that it will work on Diamond, it should be simple enough to map a single button to make it work.
Shouldn't it?
Winmo 6.5 on Diamond...

Yeah Windows Mobile 6.5 BETA has been released from several cookers, but I was talking about native support for WM6.5 on the HTC Touch Diamond. Even if HTC won't update the Diamond, the cookers here will release it for us, that's for sure But it would be nice if HTC gives an official update for the Diamond 1.

I think it is unlikely: no windows start key (which is not needed of course, but it is an advertising trick from microsoft, which imho is fearing the lack of image associated to WinMo compared to the new kids in town (android, OSX, WebOS), and is trying to get smartphone manufacturer to provide some free advertising - equivalent to "Windows Vista compatible" on the PC peripherals for example), so probably HTC will not get the OK from Microsoft on this one. Morerover, it is not sure HTC would do it even if they could (except maybe for the touch HD): Diamond2 and Pro2 will be out before WinMo6.5, so upgrading only the latest model is a way to force the previous ones (TD1/TP1) into obsolescence...especially as the specs are not so different, so any differentiation is good to get...
TouchHD successor seems further away, possibly after the release of the first 6.5 devices, or the 6.5 upgrade for TD2/TP2...so I guess official touch HD upgrade is maybe possible...
There's not going to be an update for "old Ht'c like de Touch Diamond, Touch Pro and Touch HD...

...you really thought that HTC would do that!? If you thought that you were a dreamer! They like to sell new phones and not an old phone like the Kaiser
Windows Mobile 6.5 works on QVGA?
Out of interest, are any of the devices that will 'officially' be running Windows Mobile 6.5 QVGA? From what I see, the versions of 6.5 cooked into ROMS here are tweaked to fit on the smaller 320x240 screen - but the Touch Diamond 2 and Pro 2 are both WVGA devices with an 800x460 screen resolution aren't they?
If the 'proper' version of 6.5 is designed to work on VGA devices or better only, it's not surprising that HTC aren't planning on offering upgrades to older devices that don't support the higher resolutions. Sure, it can be made to work on older handsets - but not in the way Microsoft probably envisioned for their new release...
I might be wrong and I have my asbestos "flame-proof" jacket on, so I'm ready for the backlash
Actually, Microsoft has said that it will allow official upgrades on current 6.1 devices as long as they have a 400mhz processor and 128mb ram (plus the windows start key). The Kaiser meets all of those requirements, so it is eligible for an upgrade, but that would be at the discretion of HTC/carriers. I doubt that we will ever see an official upgrade due to the age of the Kaiser, but you never know.
More importantly, though, is whether it even matters. Do we even need an official 6.5 for the Kaiser to build off of, or can we do an equal/better job with the dumped 6.5 roms already being ported to our phone? I guess that would be a question I would put to our chefs out there.
Would it really be an 'upgrade' though if HTC provided it?
If the HTC Official WWE WM 6.1 'upgrade' for the TyTN II is anything to go by, I'd run a mile from any HTC provided WM 6.5 release for the TyTN II anyway. Apart from the fact there were so many bugs in the official WM 6.1 upgrade when compared to the relatively stable WM 6.0, it's clear from HTCs continual refusal to provide full (not partial) graphics driver support for even much newer devices, that they don't learn lessons from the past (or if they do, they don't act on them).
Given the TyTN IIs age now, I suspect if there was a further upgrade to come even the apprentice programmers' time would be considered to valuable for such a task and GPS, graphics performance and things like screen flashes when coming out of standby (all things still not fixed after nearly a year since the first WM 6.1 upgrade was released) would take a very low priority. I could be proven wrong but I don't have much faith that the HTC leopard would change its spots

I hope people don't misinterpret what I wrote, I believe the TyTN II was groundbreaking in its day and it certainly offered the right combination of features that other devices didn't have together in the one package. The problem is that there are a number of inexactitudes when comparing the actual device with all the advertising that was out for the device when first released (what I relied on for my purchase decision). Both advertiising from HTC and from Qualcomm the chip maker. Since then I've seen no indication that HTC is interested in maximising all the potential in this device to try and live up to those advertising claims and if anything their UK released ROM upgrade for my device actualy makes it worse. It's a sad state of affairs where a buggy 'upgrade' still hasn't been fixed nearly a year later and I'm fed up with sending letters to HTC which aren't listened to (not to mention the thousands of online petition signatories requesting full driver support for the embedded hardware actually on the device).
As someone who has worked as a computer technician I can tell you it is truely scandalous to release a product complete with an OS that doesn't have full driver support for embedded graphics acceleration and any full sized PC provider would not get away with it. Not only then but also the fact they haven't since come along with an update to address these concerns - hence my lack of faith in this company.
I would assume HTC's refusal to release system drivers would have to do with NDA's they signed with the various component manufacturers. I'm also relatively new to the world of XDA (but not winmo), so I would assume that this topic has been discussed to death on this site before.
@Flying Kiwi: I only had the Hermes for three weeks before I found a kickin deal on a Kaiser, but I have to agree it was a good phone. However, the upgrade to the Kaiser from the Hermes was worth the little extra I paid, if only for the gps and increased ram.
Not to get off topic, but does anyone else find Age of Empires to be incredibly addictive on a PDA?

The hardware of the hd7 and the hd2 are almost identical, but the hd2 is actually better. It has a removable sd slot also.
The HD2 had to be redesigned because the Windows phone 7 OS is actually a silverlight runtime environment and needed different hardware and that means different drivers. There is currently no way to use the hardware on the hd7 with wm6.5.
I assume you ask this because you want the flexibility of third party apps...

What exactly are you asking? HTC 7 Pro?
The HTC HD7 is a windows mobile phone (Windows Mobile 7) it's really the HD3, but htc jumped to 7 to keep the number synonymous with WM7.... to avoid confusion, although people are still confused. Here's an easy way to look at it;
htc HD2 ---> WM6.5 OS
htc HD7 ---> WM7 (sometimes referred to as Windows Phone 7) OS
Seems you are confused a little..there is no Windows Mobile 7, there is Windows Phone and Windows Mobile..and that ended with 6.5.
But there is no other modern hardware with full keyboard..so the 7 Pro needs Windows Mobile.
When someone buys a Win 7 phone and wants to install 6.5 to get productivity then I really think MS have a major problem or the guy who started this thread is having a lend of us.
I would love to have 6.5.x on my HD7 dual boot
there are a lot of apps available for 6.5.x including multiple browsers copy and paste that i could use while we wait for wp7 to grow in functionality. At this point it would be ideal to be able to dual boot with 6.5.x and wp7, I could do things I need to do on 6.5 and then go back wp7 for the most part.
Are there any news about WM 6.5 ROM for the HD7? I have so many apps for 6.5 with no eqivalent in WM7. It would be great to have WM 6.5 on the HD7. I like the feeled speed compared to the HD2 and it feels easier to swipe with the finger, it have a faster response...

The HD7 feels faster because it runs WP7. Its processor runs at the same speed as the HD2's. The HD2 feels slower because WM6.5 is a big bag of smelly animal poo.
First of all there is no such thing as WM7, it was aborted in favour of WP7 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Mobile).
I suggest posting in the WP7 Rom development section your requests rather than here. Considering XDA-Devs is working on craking WP7 itself and when that happens possibly Android, I think the dead OS Windows Mobile will be low down on their list.
I also think dual booting is not all what it's made out to be! I dual-boot my HD2 to Android, and no longer use WM6.5. Why you ask? Well WM 6.5 is dead, most of the services (if not all) for WM6 are available on Android.
If you really must have Windows Mobile, best option is to get a HD2, it has very good support for WM, much better than any fudgeware that could be put on the HD7.
I have my HD7, my old HD2 still uses copilot and now a few apps only found in the Android market. I purchased a simple Pay as you go SIM to keep that phone alive.
I hope its possible soon..the HTC 7 Pro is on the market soon..and there is no alternative to it...
Give me strength!!!!!
What planet are you guys on? MS has switched development to WP7 and are not likley to support WM6 (maybe something in the numbering may give the game away here [sarcasm])
No matter how good the guys at XDA are, they are not going to crack WP7 overnight, it took them over 2 months to crack HD2 last year and that was on technology that didn't differ too much from WM6.1. WP7 is from the ground up.
As for the HD 7 Pro, it will come with WP7, nor Fairy phone 6 or anything else. And guess what? It's not even released yet so no point in asking people to crack it before it's been released.

Can one of the Mods close this useless thread or move it over to the HD7 Dev thread so all the Devs can laugh at it?
win mobile 6.5 on htc hd7
In reality, this requirement is due to the fact that many programs such as ACR (audio call recorder) and many other contacts backup is not running on win mobile 7. That's why I consider it important to install win 6.5 on hd7, at least temporarily.
thanks
