Can anyone confirm the behaviour of the Diamond when being used as a modem and an incoming call is received i.e. is priority given to the inbound call and the data connection suspended? I plan to make considerable use (several hours per day) of the Diamond as modem but need to make sure I can still receive calls.

Technically you can't use the Diamond as a modem, but rather you can use it as a 'Router' The way is works is that you initiate an Internet Connection on the phone itself using the 'Internet Sharing' application. This application will use the phone's modem to connect to the Internet and then share it out on a virtual LAN adapter for you. When you connect the phone to your PC, your PC will detect it as a 10 Mbps LAN adapter which would then be connected to your Gateway (phone) to the Internet. So in essence the phone acts as a Router for you. You don't 'dial' the modem connection from your PC as you would with most other phones.
Sharing with data isn't an issue with these newer phones. I can talk on my bluetooth headset while using the Internet connection. This depends whether your Telco in your area supports this multi mode capability or not, but nowdays it works almost everywhere.

Receiving a call is possible, also when there is an active data connection.

I've used my Touch Cruise on O2 UK and Vodafone UK and it works. However it still depends on area. I've once been in an area on Vodafone in which I only had GPRS coverage and then when a call came in it killed the data connection because it didn't support this multi mode.. however I only had this issue very very rarely so it's safe to assume that for a majority of the populated areas in the UK it's ok.
I've not used 3 before however I can confirm for you that the 3 Sim card will work in the phone because I've put 1 in before. (3 SIM cards are known to reject a lot of phones)

Cheers, that helps a lot. Even worst case if the data connection is dropped and the incoming call is given proirity then that is more desirable than the call being rejected (i.e. directed to voice mail).
I have a mobile broadband SIM from "3" that I'm going to put in there. The voice tariff isn't cheap, but I don't tend to make a lot of outgoing calls anyway - I'm more of a data user.

Why don't you port over to O2? Btw, I read that Orange has also launched HSDPA coverage in the UK...
I've been with Vodafone and O2 and generally O2 has got better coverage and provides more chances of an HSDPA signal getting picked up. Vodafone's coverage is just as good but with more areas giving 'GPRS only'. That just my personal observation. I take the train quite frequently and use the phone as a mobile broadband connection on board.

I'm on an 18 month contract with "3" at the moment, and by the time that expires there should be a lot more choice with respect to data packages hopefully.

The battery isnt really that much of an issue if you disable the gprs auto attach feature in schaps advanced config. I did it last night and my battery is still sitting at about 5 bars and thats with a good few calls, sending a load of sms's and about 30 mins of web browsing.
But i imagine that ill be charging it again tonight...not really a problem as my nokia n95 was the same....always charged it at night whether it needed it or not.
I believe the real test will come when one tries to use the Diamond with TomTom 7 installed as a navigation device in a car... bet by the time you reach your intended destination the battery would be dead.. even the Touch Cruise couldn't last half a day with that sorta usage.
It'll probably be wise to keep a 12v to USB adapter in the car handy.
Btw another 'weird' problem with the Diamond is that when I use it with my super mini low quality thin retractable USB cable, the PC doesn't detect it properly although the phone does prompt me whether I want to use it for Active Sync or Disk Drive... very peculiar.. the cable's worked fine for me with my Touch Cruise.... any idea?? I don't want to be carrying thick heavy cables in my laptop bag

Its probably the cable, your laptop probably doesnt like it so wont detect theres a phone attached. The supplied USB cable isnt that thick...i carry mine in my back pocket

Supplied USB cable IS thick!! fat and stiff!!! not sure if we both have the same ones?? Mine appears to have nice metallic rouded edges plugs on both ends and the cable itself is greyish... round and quite thick... well thicker than a standard USB cable anyway...
point is.. it's not a 'portable USB cable'... if you know what I mean.. to me portable stuff means being as light, small and least bulky as possible while maintaining its functionality.

Well i have mine in front of me and its the same one you have...maybe im not as fussy...it isnt exactly portable or as you said light, small and least bulky. I dont think ive read anywhere that the cable that comes with the Diamond is portable....perhaps try another portable usb cable and see if it works...could be that yours is duff.
Hahahah okiee... actually I find the original cable very beautiful and hence I'm just reluctant to take it out and use it coz I don't wanna get it scratched so soon

I have to use my phone as a modem but I can't find out how to do it. Can some body help me.

Just got a Compact IV on T-mobile. I would like to use the Compact as a modem for my Treo 680 and have tried various suggestions in this thread and others but with no success. Has anyone successfully done this with the Treo or any other Palm?
Can the treo get Bluetooth PAN connections?
This post is made while diamond is on HSDPA and Shared Internet via bluetooth on my laptop, ánd while diamond is calling customerservice (on hold-music ) ín my car through the Parrot
And still browsing at almost 1000kbit /s

So im pretty familiar with my AT&T tilt and have flashed/changed a few roms in and out but i cant seem to find an program for my needs anywhere.
I have currently just moved back home from college for the summer and we have a Wireless router which we use to connect our laptops to the internet. but my PC does not have a wireless card and i was expecting to be able to find a program that will allow my tilt to pick up the wireless internet from the router and transfer it to my PC over the USB cord. As of now i have been looking for days and have only found "internet sharing" applications which all use the Cellular Devices data plan as a substitution. but since thats not available to me ive hit a dead end when it comes to this issue.
maybe theirs an answer or program for my needs, or maybe their isnt. any help would be appreciated. thanks.
Why not just hardwire your PC to one of the ports on the wireless router?

the distance where the pc is located isnt more than a few physical feet to the router through the ceiling , but if i were to run an ethernet cable to the pc it would have to take a rediculous path under carpet and up a winding staircase and across another room to access the PC. So its less of a matter of accessibililty and more one of practicality. good suggestion though.
Go on ebay and get yourself a used wireless b or g network card for 10.00 bucks. They are very cheap.

thanks, i was just looking for a quick fix. maybe a program or something because running out and buying a card was more of a second option. its only temporary so i figured if i can take full advantage of the tilts capabilities then why not.
any other ideas? or anyone else heard of a program of this sort?
I have never heard of this. I can't see why anyone would take the time to write a program with how cheap the wifi. I also don't think you could even buy a laptop without a wireless card for about 4 years.
You should learn to search better.
By typing in 'internet connection sharing kaiser usb' into google, in link #1, I was able to find a post by blahmartinblah with a link to a link to what you're asking for.
Go do the same and you'll get your app...

I got a diamond which i have been using for a while.. recently it stopped charging after a short while when im connected with usb using internet sharing.. and therefor it quickly runs out of battery ..it is behaving normally when charging from wall charger and also if i dont share the internet connection with the laptop it will behave normal and charge as supposed .
i did hardreset no solution..did check the most obius reasons ! no solution...suspected virus but my system says nothing infected..suspected wmdc to be playing me around deleted that ! no solution ..googled last 2 days only thing i get is some heat related issues but im not convinced thats the case hence it worked fine b4 and temperatures is about same all year here "indonesia", however must admit the device gets hot but nothing new in that it allways did get hot.. next in line is to change the battery but it aint that old about 5 months i use it heavyli though if im not internet sharing im in the car using it as navigator so its basicly charging from dusk till dawn.. im also getting the fell of formatting my laptop maybe the issue could be in vista somewhere
I talked to a friend which has same problem with a htc touch ..even though connected via usb it drains the battery untill device shut down..
Anyone have a solution ?

does your handset stop charging then restarts after a little while using internet sharing, if so read below
a few things to check is to try internet connection on another laptop(sometimes if you have many loads on usb it can cause a problem , i have experience this twice with a compaq n400) at the location where it is happening,if the fault is present then you have identified the fault is with the handset or network.
your next step is to try internet sharing at a different location from where you are experiencing the fault and see if the fault reoccurs, for me it wasn't until i decided to try internet sharing in another area that i discovered that the fault was network related, even though my network provider were adamant it wasn't (this fault is also related to cases where the handset gets very hot within a short space of time whilst using hspda/gprs).
if the above test is carrried out and you identify that it's location based then speak to your network provider (but be persistant)
today my handset can sit idle or be surfing for xyz and it is barely warm....

Oooh, I experienced a similar problem like this on one of my previous HTC device. It went away on its own--or maybe it was because I started using Bluetooth instead of USB for internet sharing.

provider i do not think it is course i got simcards from different companies both act same way ..
ill try find another laptop see it problem stays the same..
im not a shark in this but my guess is bluetooth uses more battery than usb connection and since my problem is that im running out of power cause the usb connection just stops charging im not sure the bluetooth will help me in this case ..

hi guys i just added the unlimited web browsing option with o2 on my diamond as we moved into a new flat and we dont have braodband yet.
o2 said i cant use my phone as a modem though, they dont allow you to connect to the net via your computer. i think she meant if i put the sim card into a usb modem.
But im wondering can anyone confirm whether or not i will be charged extra for syncing my diamond to my laptop and using the phone as my modem??

You can indeed connect your phone to your pc and use it as a modem to access the internet. When you connect your phone to your pc you should have the option to choose "internet sharing" mode which allows this. However although i have an XDA Ignito I am running a cooked rom and i'm not sure if "internet sharing" is available as an option on the standard o2 rom. Either way if you do have that option it wont cost you anything as long as you keep within the fair usage policy.
thanks guys, i basically used it yesterday and checked my charges today and no extra charges so all seems ok. i have the unlimited web, run a cooked rom with the internet sharing option on a diamond so works fine and is actually quite fast!
i think you are right if you use it a lot to download films etc they will find out, shame but never mind hopefully sky will hurry up and install our BB soon

just need to know if i need media.net or any such internet connection to use a gps software, say igo8...
also, everything works fine on my tilt, except for the usb connection, it charges and all that good stuff, but the problem lies in connecting to the pc, it won't connect to the pc at all....how much do you think i could get for this on ebay?
If you are running tomtom, igo, iguidance, etc you do not need a data connection as it strictly utilizes the maps prestored on your device. However, software like google maps or live search does require a data connection if you are on the road. Although, you do need to set quickgps data every once in a while, which requires some type of data connection whether it is via Wifi or edge.
If you can charge your device through your sync cable then you should be able to connect to activesync. Reinstall your software if you are having issues.
If you do not have the cable they are widely available on eBay for fairly cheap.

Sounds like you are not running the sync program.
guys...i have no idea what's going on with my phone
this is what i did:
i reinstalled vista from new on my laptop...downloaded windows mobile device center and tried connecting my phone to the laptop...activesync is running on my phone, but the laptop doesn't even pick up the device at all, not even as an unrecognized device...the weird thing is that it still charges the phone with the connection...
i WAS messing around with the pins a while back, which is most certainly the culprit for this odd behavior...but you guys say it should connect if it's charging, why?
actually, it its charging......doesnt necessarily mean it will sync. the pins for data and power are seperate. you try and check/uncheck the box in usb to pc, if it still doenst work, maybe a hard reset. if it still doesnt work, check the pins
Nope you just need the internet to search this already answered question.
When we go cross country, we use googlemaps and always plan our trips from Starbucks to starbucks, so we can use free wifi to check our progress and where abouts

It's all been discussed before (several times).

They start of by asking me some generic questions about my contract like "how it is" etc then get onto the real reason they rang

Me: "No"
Vodafone: "Oh, well you get get the internet anywhere you go with your laptop if you use our special dongle"
Me: "I use my phone to do that"
Vodafone: "But if you sign up to the dongle package you get a small usb stick that you plug into your laptop"
Me: "Why would I pay for another unlimited data plan when I already have one? Good Bye"
You Underestimate the power of the dongle side.
I don't think you can compare the net on a laptop with the net on the X1, it's much, much better on a laptop.

I don't know for Vodafone UK but Vodafone Germany offers a so called "ultra card". This card is basically a copy of your current SIM Card. If you have a data plan on your SIM card, you can order a second ultra card for a usb dongle connected to your laptop/netbook. The ultra card costs only a one-time fee (here €30) so you're not charged for a second data plan at all.
I use this solution by myself. Former times I used my phone for tethering a lot, but it became pretty annoying when receiving calls while connected to the Internet and I also think it's not that good for the battery as the phone is constantly charged while operating under full load (it get's very (very!) hot). Another advantage of a usb dongle is the speed, as X1 can only reach up to 3,6 Mbit/s downstream when using HSUPA. Current USB dongles reach up to 7,2 Mbit/s no matter if HSUPA is used.
And the best thing is: You can use both SIM cards in parallel although Vodafone officially states different. So you still can receive mails on the phone while surfing on the Internet using a laptop connected to a usb dongle.
