Hi,
I'd be interested in everyone's comments re the slowdown caused by adding programs, and I guess others would too.
Part of it is normal caused by eating up the available memory, both storage (and ram?)
However I have found that some applications do not seem to work well on the XDA2i, even though they do actually work. The problem is that this only comes to light after a while, after you've actually shelled out the money for a product that seems fine.
I list below products that I have found work on my XDA2i and those that seem to irritate the XDA2i so that it gradually gets worse and needs a hard reset.
I have tried defragmenting, and believe that Pocket Mechanic works fine a few times then things grind to a halt.
I am not an expert, and obviously cannot prove that the products are faulty, so take what I list 'with a pinch of salt' - but it might be that others might add others or agree/disagree with my findings, and might be careful about thoughily testing before purchase.
1-Calc 2.3.1 seems fine
BIBLE WITH YOU for Pocket PC- GMPSoft seems fine.
Journal Bar seems fine
POCKET ARTIST seems fine
Pocket Controller- Professional 5.04 seems fine
POCKET DVD WIZARD seems fine
Pocket Streamer Pro seems fine
PocketBible - NIV Version by Laridian seems fine
RESCO EXPLORER 2005 seems fine
TCPMP (The Core Media Player) (freeware) seems fine
MTUX RingToneX - Ringtone Coloring 2.1 not sure about this
DVD to Pocket PC for me was problematic after version 2
1-Pass - Revolutionary Security App not sure
eXPerience (Windows XP Style Interface) had this running ok but slow on XDA2 but not tested on XDA2i
File Transfer Anywhere(PPC Anywhere) 3.01. Tried trial period but didn't like it.
iLOCK e-wallet password manager 1.0.1 had this running ok but slow on XDA2 but not tested on XDA2i
POCKET TV ENTERPRISE worked fine up to version 1.2 on my XDA2i
Pocket Mechanic. Not sure. I bought it to defrag XDA2i and storage. Found that after a few times the system slows down and needs to be restored.
TV Remote commander. Not sure about the usefulness because Very limited range.

andromeda9,
try using Tweaks2K2.NET. quite amazing tweaking software. can speed up your display. i can feel the speed different.....
Tweaks2k2net
Thanks Clustered.
I've downloaded the trial. What settings worked best for you?
Under Video, I tick the Speed Up Display.
Thanks the display is quicker...
Thanks for the tip...
The display is quicker.
It seems overkill to go for Tweaks2K2 but just for one display fix, and the Date/time on the bar (I love it!) so is there anything else you might recommend?
Thanks
just try yourself....maybe you will like others.....
Ok.
Appreciate your help.
I removed O2 Active and the XDA2i is about 10 times quicker and more reliable now.
This is how I removed O2 active:
1) Use file explorer to navigate to: my device>windows>startup.
2) Move the file called connections to another folder.
3) Navigate to: my device>windows>fonts.
4) Rename the "xpdr_02" file to "xpdr_021".
5) Soft reset your phone.
6) Go to: Settings>system>remove programs.
7) Uninstall O2 active. You may get a message saying that certain dll files are in use in windows directory- simply use file explorer to rename these files and try again. Rename them back afterwards.
8) Use file explorer to navigate to: my device>windows>fonts.
9) Rename the "xpdr_021" file back to "xpdr_02".
10) Navigate to: my device>windows>mobile solutions.
11) Cut and paste this folder to your built in storage
12) Soft reset the phone.
Thanks Hedley!
Hedley,
:?:
I just thought of a question re your unistall procedure.
After unistall, can you change 'profile' in order not to cause problems on aircraft?
In Active, I quite liked the simplicity of the email setup. I suppose once it's installed it is not neccessary, but did you find / is there anything else likely to be needed after removing?
Thanks
It is definately Faster!!
I am impressed with this one, my XDAIIi is definately a lot faster!
Cheers for that!

Hi Hedley,
:?:
I'm thinking about what you describe, maybe migfht trial it over Christmas... but once Active is uninstalled can you tell me how I might cope with Airplane travel?
i.e. can you turn off the 'airplane' parts? because obviously just shutting down the XDA leves it actively listening.#
Thanks
"Flight" mode
You can enable flight mode (turn off mobile receiver) by tapping the reception icon on the top bar. In the bubble that appears, there is a link to "Turn on flight mode" / "Turn off flight mode"
The piece of software I really miss in the O2 active is the "profile" stuff, which unless I'm blind isn't in the 2003 OS. For example: normal, work, silent, noisy etc
I wouldn't manually uninstall the Active rubbish - do a corporate install instead. If you have to manually delete locked files etc etc you're asking for trouble later.
Thanks MMM
Thanks for the information and tips.
What is a corporate install - I am not familar with the term.

Goto Start->Settings->Today->Items and uncheck the ones O2 puts on there (can't think off hand which ones they are!) this stops the dll in use messages.

The only problem with the corporate install I found, was it didn't setup the O2 GPRS and MMS settings before finishing device setup, I had a pain setting them up manually, and when I finally managed it, they didn't work 100% (or maybe it was i didn't trust my work 100%!)
You can invoke a corporate install by selecting it when it asks if you are a personal or corporate user. it'll ask you for a password, which is 0506 if memory serves me correct.
I just bought a Touch Diamond -very nice phone with a couple exceptions.
Touchflo 3d is nice but Im finding it doesnt have much depth - it needs more functions. And the loudspeaker is not very good - not loud, not clear.
Anyways, its my first windows mobile phone and had a couple questions about what WM6.1 can do. Im using Vista btw.
1. Email - Im downloading ALL my email and its fairly big. Can I force it to save only to internal storage?
2. Music - How do you get the album photo to come up while playing through Touchflo music - the picture does come up if i just play in windows media player.
3. Is it possible to add/remove multiple contacts from the People Menu ie Favourite contact
4. Most important - connectivity. Is it possible to access the phone wirelessly from PC via router? The phone connects to the router wirelessly fine and I can use the internet. But what I want to be able to do is either access the internal storage or sync up with outlook without using the usb cable.
5. What kind of BASIC phone functions does it have?
Eg. Call timer during call
Stop it going to that call history page after a call - i want it to go straight back to home.
Theres more functions it seems to be missing....
6. How do you make it so it FULLY shuts down a program when u hit the top right close button? I dont want to have to keep re-hitting the top right button to open task manager and full close it that way.
7. Lastly, is there any secret tips that a newbie wouldnt know about eg. codes to get to secret menus etc?
1. I don't think so, but I don't download email, so somebody who does may be able to help.
2. Strange problem, probably to do with the version of ID3 tags each uses. But again I have no idea how to solve it
3. No idea with no device in hand
4. Microsoft, being twats, reoved sync via Wi-Fi with the upgrade to WM2003. So, sorry mate, no way that I know
5. My dialer on my other PPC has call timer I think, but the diamond's may not, a new dialer with it included may solve the problem.
Other stuff missing?
6. Get a proper x button, like WKTask, or Wisbar, or something similar. Its also probably possible to change the settings to make it close by tapping X. I also think that with the HTC program, you can close by tap and hold, or, from today, click where the x should be, and a menu comes up enabling you to close them individually.
7. Secret codes? Not that I know of.
Hope the small things I have known here do help
Rory
Yeah, 6 is definitely something that can be done in the standard Windows Mobile settings (unless they've removed the setting in 6.1, in which case a registry edit might do it).
I guess when the phone has been out for a while, a lot of registry tweaks and utils will show up around here to adress all kinds of small and big issues.
i was gona go for a diamond but look at htc touch pro. everything diamond plus hardware keyboard and memory expansion slot (minus front camera).
Found how to fully close the progam in one go - went to task manager - button - and chose "End Programs by tapping X"
Under this option is "End programs by tapping and holding X" which is the default.
I tried it and it does work but I dont like it. Coz u cant really tell how long to hold it. If u keep holding, the program actually just stays open until u release. And I guess if u release too early it wont fully close.
Anyways - thats not a huge issue - wireless sync is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Has anyone found a way to get around it?
Best you can do with WIFI is put the UNC name of your pc into the browser and bring up the shares.
If you want to sync wirelessly, you'll have to do it via bluetooth. You should be able to get a bluetooth dongle for your pc for about 20 bucks though.
OH YEAH!!!!!!!! Going through Opera to browse my PC directory - You little beauty!!!
Now, how do I set up a name for the diamond so I can see it on my PC. Is there a setting you have to enable? I browse for "PCs" and it doesnt find the diamond - just my other PCs
Hello,
I'm still working on the different sound topics, but here are my newest roms.
I call them age of reason and age of beauty. This is a kind of trial for the second one...
The point is that we need a rom to really use the shift possibility. We need storage space, real gps useage, and of course maximum ram.
This is the age of reason rom. The lightest possible rom, where you can add a lot of programs, more if you use UPX compression.
You need to flash the radio from the phone+gps rom before using this one.
What does it have:
42 Mb storage and 22 Mb memory free
WORK on WINMOB SIDE
All standard Winmob application (ie, notes, media player, sms, phone, gps)
Task manager to soft reset, kill process, etc...
Clear temp (as requested)
USB tools
A homemade program to switch the speaker when on call. This program is for my development my roms only, and it work as a service, so it cannot be killed by the OS.
There is a managment program to remove the service if needed.
WORK WITH VISTA
storage:
A network browser to access the vista HDD
GPS:
An automatic GPS redirection to the PC side
This program is GPS2Blue, and it is preconfigured. You just have to launch the shortcut in HTC debug tools, and setup vista to get communication.
GPS works on both side, so you can use it on Windows mobile too of course
A few words on this last program.
GPS2Blue is a program made by Paludour. You can check his website here:
http://www.paludour.net
He allowed me to add this program to my roms, as you must normally download the cab from his site. This way, I could put it preconfigured on our devices. Many thanks to him for that.
When you are connected with usbtools to vista, click on this gps2blue icon, and you can receve the gps on vista if you follow this guideline:
http://www.paludour.net/GPS2BlueFAQ.html#USB
Just click on the gps2blue icon when you have to do the PDA side of this tutorial, the rest is aleady done.
The link for this rom is here:

MD5: 4c31ba01b109e22cd77bc3da53220672
Mirror:http://www.filesavr.com/light_1
Now for the other rom, the age of beauty:
This rom is the same, with one little twist: there is pointUI pre-installed.
This is a test, as I don't know if this is a good way instead of installing it afterward. Anyway, you are good for some eyecandy.
You have to pay for this: you have only 37 Mb of sorage, and 9 (yes, nine) megs of free memory after reset. But the good news is that you can disable it, and still be using the rom. So you can choose when you want eye candy, and when you want to be serious. If it is requested, I might update this one.
The link for this one is:

Enjoy and report here if you like it.
How to connect to vista side:
first, know the name of your shift. If you didn't change it it is SHIFT, otherwise type hostname in a command line in vista side.
then type services.msc and make sure the server service is started and set up to automatic if you want it to start every boot
Now type \\shift in your start menu. A windows must open, and you should see thinks, like Users, and printers. If not, don't worry, you can still go on. For more advanced users, it can be a good time to set up a share.
Now go on Snapvue side, and go to settings-connections-network plugin. First click on the "enable network folder" and wait for the reset.
Now, when reset is done, start usbtools to activate activesync. On vista side, make sure you are connected ( set up a partnership, or just click on connect whitout partneship. In this case, you will have to do it each time.)
Go back on Snapvue, and in network plugin click on New...
In remote path, enter \\shift\users if shift is your computername, and if you saw Users in the window on the second step.
Otherwise, you can enter \\shift\c$ to access the whole drive.
Click on map drive. Enter your username and your password (the one you use to login in vista)
Now, you can browse the pc using the network folder. You can add music to media player, browse pictures, wmv video...
You can even install some progs on vista side, but I don't recommend it. You might use it also as a data storage for SPB insight (my little baby) for example
thank you.

Thanks ThaiHugo !
Flashing the rom at this very moment. PointUI
Has this ROM a higher mic gain setting as the default, i.e. is the microphone
issue solved (low sound recording volume) ?
Will report in this post later on.

The ROM looks and feels supersweet. However, if you work with it
for some time it get's laggy. No harm, we all understand it's a test.
Will play with the GPS2Blue thing to get that fixed too.

I preferred "age of beauty". How works the network browser to access the vista HDD? I am not able. If you can help me please.
Thanks Thaihugo, this rom is really good and a lot of free memory and storage for programs. Only problem is that when I have Vista side open gps isn't working for me. Well it is working (satellite used about 4-10) but Satellite Fixed stays 0. When I turn off vista side Satellite Fixed is after a few seconds 5-7.. I have Windows 7 build 7000 installed on vista side and Light version on snapvue side

I removed automatic connection setup to save space. You need to setup your connection by yourself in settings-connections. Once done, it will connect automaticaly. Most providers can sen you a sms from their web site with connection settings.
I'm not sure you want to lose 3 megs of storage for this one time operation, do you?
Downloading the ROM

If you want, you can just disable the today plugin, and you get a full working wm for when you want to be serious. And you just soft reset when you are just using it as an updated snapvue.
To disale fully pointui:
delete the shortcut in \windows\startup (start2) and disable the today plugin.
To reenable, recheck the today plugin.
your rom is the best

Hi all,
First of, sorry for this long boring explanation in detail.
I'm a newbie & can't stand the Full QWERTY. So the first thing I upgraded was the Ezinput.
apparently I installed the wrong version QVGA I think. & messed up the keyboard. I had to do a hard reset, installed the EzInput_2.0.343770-VGA.CAB. THEN, the XT9 didn't work, but I ignored that problem, few days later, I installed a few other programs & for some reasons I have been able to enable the XT9 option. I dont know how & why.
When I text, the space button sometimes doesnt work. blah...weird stuff.
Ever since, I'm reluctant to try out any programs. So, before I install this program, I'd really need your advice.
1. How do you compare this program with the TouchFlo 3D?
I'd assume that using spb Mobile Shell 3, you will disable the TouchFLO 3D? (Start > Settings > all settings > Personal > Today > Items)
I notice that if I disable the TouchFLO 3D , the memory useage will be reduced by 10%, & when you install & use the spb Mobile Shell, will the program consume more of the memory useage & slow the phone down?
Thanks for any info.
p.s. the phone's currently having:
- EzInput_2.0.343770-VGA.CAB on the main memory (I think the input will be faster if I install it on the main memory instead of the storage card)
- Lextionary (dictionary) on Storage card
- Finix on Storage card
- Sprite backup on Storage card
- PowerSMS on Storage card
- SuperDoku on Storage card
- Skyfire on Storage card
After a soft reset, the memory usage indicates 48%.
During the day, I notice the memory usage shows 55% - 70% is that too high? normal?
Thanks.

Your memory usage is normal, but why have you got powersms on the storage card? You do realise that every time your phone goes to sleep that the storage card gets turned off? That means that any programs that were running in the background from the storage card get stopped. Looking at the feature list of powersms it seems to me that it needs to at least run a process in the background to do things like auto reply and schedule sms, it may even totally replace the built in SMS application. By having it on the SD card one of two things will happen, either the application will exit and not work as it should, or it will keep the SD card powered up in sleep mode and reduce your battery lifetime. The Diamond 2 has no shortage of built in storage memory, make use of it the way it was designed to be used.

Great point. Thanks shuflie.
Ok, I'll put PowerSMS on the main memory then. I was worried that it'll eat up the memory & slow down the phone.
I use PowerSMS for 1 single purpose: group messages.
My calendar can do the rest of the features offered by PowerSMS.
btw, how do you like the spb mobile shell 3 vs the TouchFLO 3D?
Thanks again.

To be honest I haven't tried it, read that it basically just a bit of winddressing and when you try to actually do anything you're right back into WM6.1 standard apps. I like the way that TF3D isolates me from that as much as possible.
When I had my TD1, I switched off TF3D after a few days use and installed SPB Mobile Shell instead. I got my TD2 a few days ago and made the point to test out the improved TF3D - to give it a chance, so to speak. However after a couple of days, I moved back to Mobile Shell, to the latest V3. MS3 can be easily customised, and to me, is faster and more powerful than TF3D. There are a few bugs with MS3 on TD2, eg. duplicate contacts and inability to delete call history. However the latest V3.01 Beta which has just been released have fixed these 2 issues. Having said that, there is still one annoying bug - inability to use the Contacts soft button that is on the TD2 dial pad. Hopefully SPB can fix this soon. Overall, very happy with MS3.
P/S - there's one tab on TF3D that I love - Stocks (run off Yahoo I believe). If only I can get this Stocks feature as a widget in MS3; that would be perfect!
with the ms3 can i still link my windows live phonebook with the phonebook on the phone. i really like this feature as it means i don't need to add new numbers when i get a new phone.
If it can do this, then i might move to MS3

I'm using NFSFAN WM6.5 and SPB Mobile Shell 3.5. I've been playing with myn's donut, and I can't get some things setup that way I'd like. Appreciate any help with configurations and/or widgets and apps so I can move on to Android! Here's what I need:
Gmail - Using the WM app. I can switch between accounts. The widgets/apps I've seen just allow me to setup one account.
Opera browser - I want this to launch if I click a link anywhere (email msg, RSS reader, etc.)
Missed call, voice mail, text msg notifications on the home screen - I have a nice SPB setup using invisible widgets. Icons appear when there is something to check. I'd love something similar, although home screen widgets that show this would work. I don't like the top pull-down to see notifcations.
Ringtone - I want a normal cell phone ring. The built in one rings once and stops. The marketplace stuff I've seen is silly songs. Where can I get some normal tones?
Volume profile - SPB gives me a home screen widget that I press, get a menu, and I can select what I want. The widget changes to show the state it is in.
Backlight profile - I found a widget where each time I click it changes the level. OK but too many clicks. One click on the SPB widget gives me a menu with 5 options and I click one
Data off - Need an app/widget to make 100% sure data is off since I often go close to the US border and don't want the accidental roaming fees
Best RSS reader - I found one a while back that seemed good and automatically sync'd with Google Reader. I can't find it now. Open to suggestions here
Calendar - In SPB I display a nice transparent calendar showing next 3 events. Some in the marketplace are ok, but not quite the same. Ideas?
Streaming audio - I stream some Shoutcast by saving .pls files files on the device and opening them with TCPMP. I haven't really played with this in Android, so looking for ideas here.
Resolution - Myn's stock res is too small for me. I tried his 110 (not big enough) and 160 (too big) updates. How do I set something in between?
Looking forward to your suggestions so I can make the move! Thanks everyone.

Gmail - Set up your default Gmail account then set up more under the email app
Opera browser - Far as i know you can't change your default browser yet.
Missed call, voice mail, text msg notifications on the home screen - Check out AHome or OpenHome, sure they have something
Ringtone - I'm sure there's some on the internet somewhere
Volume profile - Try Toggle Settings
Backlight profile - Try Toggle Settings
Data off - If you open up the modem program and click disconnect, it turns off data till you reboot
Best RSS reader - BlueRSS is a good one, Doggcatcher is the best but costs
Calendar - Stock Cal works for me, but check out Smooth Calendar
Streaming audio - I use Streamfurious, you can import .pls into it
Resolution - I use MYN RL4 with 320x480, works great for me, but some people really like 320x428, but search the forums to change pixel density

for Streaming audio I love DroidLive. I tried Streamfurius but it didn't work well for me on the site I like to stream - www.di.fm I use AAC+ 64k and it sounds GREAT and never buffers.
for ringtones i use myxer.com it lets you upload, edit, and sell ringtones but most of the ringtones are free

I prefer Zedge. It's a free app in the market. Or if you want to make your own rings off of mp3's on your sd card, try ringdroid (also free)
Thanks guys. I've got a setup that works pretty good now. I'm just trying to figure out how to connect it to my Win7 PC to transfer files. Time to search....

are you running off of nand> if so then download the attatched file and install it onto your phone. then go into the app and enable it. then plug in your phone and win7 should install drivers. if your running off of sdcard then you need to find and download an app called ''dual mount sd widget'' and then add the widget to your home screen and click on it. then plug it in and let it install the drivers and your good to go. hope this helps good luck!!!
Thanks man. I'm using my SD card for now until I'm sure I want to switch. I'll give this a shot. Now to figure out how to install an app outside the market!

you need to download android sdk and it will come with the drivers you need for vista. Then go to device manager and update drivers and point to the drivers you downloaded with sdk. or better yet, here you go.
Unzip and place on the root of you C: drive and use device manager to point to the folder

or do that lol
I don't remember any drivers being installed.
Intertone - Install the apk open the app tick enable sd card auto mounting plug your phone into your pc your phone's notification tab it should say preparing sd card and say something about turning usb storage turning off. It will take about 30 - 60 seconds and you should get a pop up on your screen anking what you would like to do with the removable drive.
