Hello,
I'm really hesitating, any advice welcome.
I presently have a 8310 and my main uses are Exchange ActiveSync, internet browsing (long commutes) and SMS.
I would like a new 3G WiFi phone with a bigger screen, if possible faster, and GPS would be cool.
The TyTn II seems almost perfect but I hear the batteries are limited, it is not that fast & there are 3D problems. So I guess there will be a TyTn III, but when?
The Cruise seems cool, but is it easy to write small text messages?
So really the question is, TyTn II, Cruise or wait?
Thanks,
Cedric
If they could get the TyTN II Radio chip & the video preformance to work I would say TyTN II.
Or else Touch Cruise.
But the Cruise looks ugly :O
I would wait for the Touch Cruise II.

Thanks.
Which issues do you see with the present Touch Cruise?
I would stay away from HTC products altogether. Unless customer service is not important for you and you enjoy companies treating you like s*** after you've paid their products dearly..
I exchanged 4 TyTN IIs (ATT Tilt version) before finally getting one without a problem. I almost even went back to the original TyTN (ATT 8525).
So I say wait for a new release.

Tilt sucks anyway
I would go for the Cruise. Texting without a physical keyboard is not that important anymore with the invent of innovative soft keyboards (SIP's) such as the Cooket's TouchPal and the PCM keyboard.
Presently I have the TyTn II and I find myself using the slide out keyboard less and less and most of the time I am using Cootek's Touchpal for example this message.

Yes, I posted about this yesterday as well. I am leaning towards selling my Tilt and getting the Cruise when it comes out, but it really depends on whether the touch screen is better. If it the same as the Tilt (not sensitive enough for scrolling and swiping plus prone to unintentional taps), I'll stick with the Tilt.
My post...
Touch screen features on Kaiser vs Elf/Cruise
Not that I am really disappointed with the Kaiser, but I have been wondering as of late if the Crusie might be a better fit for me. All things considered, internally the two are pretty similar with the only additional feature of the Crusie being FM radio, which I would probably use.
Externally, the Cruise goes SANS keyboard in favor of the touch screen. In keeping with the touch screen design, it has far fewer buttons over all and has a slight size advantage.
So looking at it, the package is pretty attractive, seems less prone to mechanical wear and tear and I find myself wondering if I could do without the slide out keyboard. I am pretty good with the block recognizer, and in cases where I might use a keyboard, some of the adaptations of the iPhone soft keyboard seem like they would be a decent alternative for my relatively light keyboard use.
Getting down to it though, I am a bit concerned I would be disappointed with the touch screen, and if the touch screen does not work well, I would definitely rather have the keyboard.
So my question is if anyone has some hard facts on the differences between the screen technologies. does it work like the iPhone where it responds only to touch, not to inadvertant tabs while in you pocket or in the case?
Can anyone can provide a "hands on" comparison between using the touch features on the Kasier, vs using the touch features on the Cruise. Or given that the Cruise is pertty new, is the Elf screen technology exactly the same such that trying one out would give me a good indication of how the Cruise would work?

why, because you were lucky enough to pay more for your version?
anyways, i say get the tytn II now, as the anticipation and wait for it took a long time to materialize, and its replacement hasn't really leaked yet even. the kaisers and tilts i've seen and had were definitely problem-free.
Thanks for all the inputs.
Seems that the screen keyboard works good enough to replace a hardware one.
I'll have a look at the Polaris when it is available and if it's not as ugly as it looks I'll go for it.
Otherwise I'll wait for a Touch II, which I hope will have a decent processor, Wifi, 3G+, GPS and who knows perhaps a VGA screen
I'm sorry, WHAT? let's try some logical deductive reasoning... okay?

I'm going let comments above stand for themselves as I present some real facts for consideration:
Tilt/kaiser/tytn II: screen sensitivity is adjustable and may be calibrated bilinearly with the apropriate software through the rom, or during field test mode.
- processor is 2x as powerful as the touch.
- 4x amount of ram & 2x the amount for rom, AND can handle larger sd cards that the elf.
ELF's digitizer is the very same as the kaiser but based on multi-point user interface, which was in final stages of delopment/testing when kaiser was released. it's predacessor (8525/hermes) had the same screen as the 8125/Wizard.
the tilt is quick both using it's own IE App or to tether s the conection for a pc or laptop.
look at the raw specks and capabilities hands down, it's not even questionable, tilt overpowers the touch period. it's a fact, plain and simple. the only purpose for the elf was htc's knee jerk response to the iphone, before they knew what horrendous disasters the iphones were going to become.
seriously, I've field tested all the PDA phones for cingular/att plus a few others including touch. touch was designed around an interface. focused on ensuring the interface thread priority superceeded all else... good for apearance, nothing else.
I have two Tilts and one Kaiser.
I have had no problems with them.
Maybe I am not as demanding as other people.
The Tilts are running Dutty's HTC Hybrid Final as is the Kaiser.
Have tried all the new ROM's but always come back to it.
Wait for a new release or, if the size / weight isn't a problem, get a HTC Universal. I think the Tilt will be only worth the price if and only if the 3D / video drivers are fixed - in no way in its present state. (Of course, if you won't want to play back movies / play games at all, this won't be an issue for you.)
Alternatively, you might want to consider getting the Nokia N95, particularly if you're into multimedia and don't necessarily need touchscreen / thumbboard - you'll love it with the new, v20 firmware. It's just lovely: lightweight, very fast, is Next Gen N-Gage compliant, has 3D hardware acceleration, has the best multimedia features (built-in, stereo speakers, built-in even UPnP support and a decent A2DP implementation - much better than that of the Tilt / Kaiser) and knows a lot "out of the box", even w/o installing third-party apps.

That's a good comparison of the TyTN II to the Touch, but I think he was asking about the Touch Cruise? Same CPU and memory, etc. How is typing on the touch screen for a short SMS?
My device, Axim X51V, is quite a fast one, or this is my impression about this kind of CPU's. Touchpal made me feel I was using a 200MHz OMAP.
So after a few tests in which I've seen it doesn't do much I've uninstalled it quickly. Sorry, but there are better alternatives, so I won't stick to something inferior.
If anyone needs to know, I'm currently using FTPRO, it's simply the best KB so far, you can download the CAB Attached and give it a try. More details on www.fingertouchpro.com
Ciao!

If you were getting into this a little earlier in the year i would tell you to get the tilt or htc kaiser hands down.... (same phone).
But since you are just now looking, and the HTC Diamond and HTC Touch Pro are right around the corner....I personally would recommend waiting to see what they are about. Then, watch some youtube videos, read some ACTUAL reviews from people who have the phone (not companies who review the phone). If you still want it then, buy one of those.
Many of the current devices out have issues, or flaws, that won't or SHOULDN'T exist in the upcoming series of phones. The Diamond specifically appears to have resolved most of the problems we see with our Kaiser/Tilt's.
So... my suggestion, wait it out for at least another month or so... IF you can.
Oh, and there's always the iphone 3g, and yes i'm totally 100% serious. It's a nice little gadget (even if everyone on this forum is in denial about it and hates them for some reason).
I have sold my cruise but now I'm interesting to diamond some advice? I' ve some troubles about it
if u can wait buy htc touch pro. has everything diamond does (minus front camera) plus a hardware kb and memory slot.

i think real keyboard is meaningless. Diamond without a real keyboard is better, when you hold it on your hand, you will feel it looks more like a real phone. not holding a huge monster on your hand.
the new virtual full QWERTY keyboard will change your mind. find any friends can hand you to try the real HTC diamond.
FFS why do people moan on about the keyboard adding thickness. It's 6.7mm extra, that's like an ipod nano.
So if you already have a thinner device, please say, but if not, then don't moan.
Ok I did some research on all HTC's Pocket PC Phones and came up with thse devices whch are thinner
Artemis 16.8mm
Niki 15.8mm
Polaris 15.5mm
Elf 13.9mm
Advantage 16mm
So this shows us that the Touch Pro is the thinnest device that HTC has produced with a proper keyboard

I had a tytn and a touch cruise...cruise is more handling because was more slim but keyboard on tytn was very useful...
Some specs stop me in my decision:
htc diamond: positive ---> it is present a 4gb hd
negative--->no flash camera e no expansion slot
htc touch pro: positive ---> flash camera more ram than in diamond expansion slot
negative----->qwerty keyboard is more useful but the device it is no so handling as diamond

We have every right to moan about the keyboard. Some of us just don't need it, and it increases the thickness by around 50% (and decreases the style by 90%).
In automotive terms, it's a bit like buying a car with a steering wheel and a rudder. confused
Anyway, the fact that it has a flash is good, and the keyboard does seem to be one of the best that HTC have produced. I might get one as a backup device...
Decreases style by 90%?
And how do you measure style?
Considering some of the things you've called stylish, I shall disregard this comment

lol
I'm obviously just pointing out that it looses a lot of its style through its thickness.
By accident I stumbled upon the HTC Diamond after a friend of mine asked me if I can buy it cheaper in the US (compared to Germany)...
I was using a PocketPC in the past but stopped because I did not want to carry a PPC and a cell phone with me all the time. And at that point, windows mobile based phones where just not very appealing...
Well, that changed now after getting back and checking the current PPC market which mainly consists of PPC/phone solutions now. Is the PPC as a stand-alone PDA dead? I guess so...
Luckily I stumbled upon the HTC Touch Diamond on the day HTC announced the Touch Pro. So despite most of you all out there, I was not caught in the HTC Touch Diamond Hype before you completely knew about the HTC Touch Pro.
So for me, I will most likely wait until the Touch Pro is released. Mainly because of: Higher Battery Capacity, microSDHC slot, more RAM/ROM, Camera with Flash and keyboard... (well, basically all the differences)
One thing I was really wondering about: The HTC Touch Diamond/Pro are 3G phones. So it is possible to stay connected to the Internet 24/7. You can receive your emails now anytime and anywhere (even better with push-email or an exchange server). So managing your emails on-the-go is not a problem at all. Therefore it is great to have a hardware keyboard with the phone, like with the pro, right?
Or is a hardware keyboard not that great? I have no experiences with that... What are yours? What are your opinions about having a hardware keyboard or not? Is the larger size of the pro to much of a sacrifice to get all the goodies like keyboard, more battery power, and memory card slot?
I am wondering how much of an impact it has if the phone is just 7mm thicker and heavier but the width and length remains the same. Opinions... what are your priorities?
Touch Pro............
I'll try to hold myself and wait for the Touch Pro. It even has a TV-out for Christ sake... Don't get me wrong, the Diamond is a stunning device, but if I'll buy a new smartphone (now I have a Touch Enchanced) it will be the Touch Pro. Plus, while the Diamond design is ... unique, it's not very practical, and one shouldn't be concerned about the shape of a phone in the first place.
Diamond for me, I now have a E-ten M700 and the keyboard i don't use alot.
The more things on the device the more things brake
I got Diamond because it's thin and pro is too thick
I've got an HTC Wizard, and I don't think it's too thick..
Don't get me wrong, it is think for a phone, but with the stuff in has in side (at least for the time it was released) it's good
The keyboard is sometimes really useful, but I guess it depends on what you're using the device for.. Sometimes you just don't want to type the stuff on the display (especially if the keys are tiny), and then the keyboard is perfect! Other times, I use the screen (because when I open the kb, the scren rotation takes 3 seconds or something like that, and at times I hate it, though it's not a problem with the HTC Touch Pro )
Anyway, I'm thinking of getting the pro, mainly because of the battery, RAM.. I could live without the keyboard, but not with a bad battery =/
Speaking about the SD card.. I'm thinking will the internal storage be faster than the internal SD card reader?
Diamond. Keyboards are not fashionable or necessary, and the other improvements (some of which are random, like TV Out) don't justify the size.
And yeah, I would guess that the internal storage would be faster than a microSD card reader.
Does anyone have any estimates on the price of the Touch Pro? They might put an end to any potential for doubt in my mind.
I think keyboard have their place. I used to use one to ssh and vnc into servers as a last resort. They also make email alot easier. Without the keyboard you end up writing small short emails which you later have to follow up with another sentance or two when you get to the PC.
But, i'm going for the diamond, simply because i dont need to respond to that much email urgently, only read it, and what i do i can manage with on screen keyboard. SSH, VNC will still work, and like i said its a last resort anyway.
Touch pro for me! i dont think the diamonds virtual keyboard is any good for even a full text message, it just dosent apeal to me. Yeah the pro is thick, but having a full keyboard and bigger battery just makes me gravatate to it much more.
and VGA screens =D
pro or x1 because of the keyboard.
Pro. Hardware keyboard. MicroSD slot. Bigger screen. And for people who say less hardware=better, what will happen if you mess up your touchscreen on your diamond? You're screwed because you have no buttons.
I like the diamond but will get none of those.
The look and specs are great, but they are not for me. Because:
- Battery. How on earth 900mAh battery comes with 528mAh CPU, VGA display, 128Mb RAM. Oh well not to mention the 3D effect. It reminds me about Nokia 8800, luxury but not useful with second bettery beside. Touch Pro is not much better. The best maybe SE Xperia X1 (HTC also).
- Plastic feel and of couse fingerprint. A bit too light for me.
- 2.8" screen a bit too small for browsing, especially VGA display.
Maybe HTC will redesign those phones and the next generation coming soon. Ideal "Diamond version" will come with bigger battery and Metal feel like X1. Will get one then
Pro!
I'd go with the Pro. I currently have a Tilt, but am looking to expand my collection. This phone seems to be the perfect fit. There is one feature that is a slight problem, screen size. My tilt has the widely used 2.8" qvga screen and gets very annoying when trying to surf the web, view documents as well as pix and vids. The Pro would be even better if it had at least a 3.5 inch screen.
I will definitely wait for the Pro. Mostly for the battery capacity and the more RAM and ROM. Then hardware QWERTY keyboard and SD card slot are another plus, even if I won't use them that much. May be even more/better accessories in the box. And yes, it's thicker than the Diamond but, hey - all that in just 18mm. Man, it's the size of my current N73.
I just hate HTC for that two months delay, they should have announced them together so I can buy Pro now. I was so desperately waiting for the new HTC device, now I have to wait even more. But then I'll have the time to see if users experience any problems with the new platform - the case with the cripled TyTNII, that I was going to buy and then read about the video problems.

I am actually speculating very much on this... as you already have read on this forum, there are flaws or shortcomings with the Diamond and people already find tweaks and solutions. I am actually very confident that I will end up to have very distinc and realistic expectations once the Pro hits the market due to what I am and will be able to get to know about the Diamond on this forum!

I can understand people who just prefer keyboards, but attacking the touchscreen is very random. I have four points in response to that:
1. Touchscreens are not particularly prone to breaking. If they were, phones with touchscreens would not be popular.
2. The Touch Diamond has toughened glass protecting its screen, so that is pretty hard to break too. I'd say toughened glass is much less prone to breaking than a plasticky keyboard.
3. Even if the touchscreen does break, the device can be used without it - there are more than enough buttons.
4. The Touch Diamond is designed for use with one hand, whereas it's pretty hard to use a keyboard with just one hand. What if you messed up one of your hands?
Well, I'm getting the Diamond (not the pro). Form factor is very important to me and I have never used a hardware keyboard as well (no, don't need one too ).
Most of the issues I hear I'm 'used to' with htc phones and there are already some tweaks out to overcome those small flaws. For me I don't think the pro will fix those issues.
So in short the pro doesn't have that much more to offer to me, thus the Diamond is the device of choice
Diamond ordered here. It`s tiny and that`s important.
Call me Fl#cking crazy
I'm considering getting out of the ppc game. I went from the
Hitachi g1000
ppc6600
ppc6700
ppc6800
ppc6900
then back to the 6800
I won't say what i might be getting, if i did i'd get flamed like noo tommorow.
I was excited about the diamond and raphael. Then i saw the video blog of the diamond. Every new video that came out, made me realize that you can spot the wound peeking out from underneith the bandaid. Touch flow being the bandaid, win mo being the scabby wound, that keeps getting a little better, untill you pick at it. 8 years of nearly the same os, has left me cynical and slightly bitter. There's nothing better than showing someone my 6800 to someone to only have it stall or lock, and then having to re-set it.
Did i mention that i have been up for over 20+ hours, it's easy to nit pick when your barely lucid.
Well the release of the Touch HD is imminent for the first week of November....is there anyone out there thinking of making the transition??

Love the diamond, but definitely moving to the Touch HD!
OK, just got a nice comparison video to the Diamond
hmmmm very sexy now as not much bigger dimensionally, but what a nice screen and appears quite "quick" when operating...
http://www.mobiletechaddicts.com/2008/10/14/htc-touch-hd-video-eye-candy/
Looks sexy, but i feel like they did not adapt a single byte of TouchFlo to the bigger screen capacity.
Check the home screem for instance, still just the Call history and tzhe calendar there PLUS some extra black space below... Thats ridicilous.
But I hope someone can extract that "stock" app :O:O wowooo
As long as there is no US 3G on it, i won't be getting it. I will probably get the Touch Pro when it's released on at&t. Also, the spec is all the same except a slightly bigger ram, and screen, so i'm probably not gonna waste my money on it, if i didnt get the touch pro and wait for the next update.
na i'll stick to the diamond till winmob7 devices are are comming.
also i think the advantage of the bigger akku will be reduced to the larger screen.

Agreed... and to be honest, the HD looks like a brick to me... personal opinion before I start another debate!
The Diamond is sleek and stylish...the HD looks like an iphone almost in its dimensional view and to be honest, looks bigger / thicker
In my opinion, the diamond is the perfect size/weight and thickness a phone should have. Bear in mind, I work in phone repairs so I see hundreds of models every week, some in prototype versions too and so far, the diamond is one of the most advanced yet non-intrusive in my pocket phone.
As I say, personal opinion.
You cant help to want the HD because it is an awesome device! I think we all agree on that. Specs are just perfect. If I ever had a chance I would get one (but keeping my Diamond)
But....
Diamonds have been noted by the sleeknessss and nice looks.
Yet there is no sacrifice in features. Diamond users are pretty well rounded easily above most other phones features plus the perfect size.
Greetings to all.
I played a little with a touch HD.... let be clear : the design, screen are great !!!!! I don't know about the battery life.. bugs of the TF3D and others.... but the look and feel are great !!! I Love this phone !

I have to agree to the great looks and specs of the device.
I have Diamond and looking at Touch HD I noticed 2 things:
1. It is big, big, bigger than SE P1i I have (I got Diamond as I wanted something smaller than P1 after a year of having it)
2. The hardware buttons are so near the bottom that it will be hard to use them at all. 20hand operation is inevitable, which makes it much more difficult to use in the street.

What I will be eventually doing is switching over regardless of contracts. I will going to Florida in the summer and picking one up there. When I return, I will just simply selling my old Diamond. This will all happen by August of this year. I never wait for contracts to expire. That would make me go crazy having a phone for 2 or 3 years straight. This is my 4th phone in the last 6 months....lol
Phones I had in the last 6mths:
1) HP 6955
2) Cruise
3) Trinity
4) Diamond
i think i will be getting the touch pro 2 instead of the diamond 2
Touch Pro 2 here too... played with the Diamond 2 at MWC, I don't like it's look and feel.
Touch Pro 2 is the poison I choose this time.
Will keep my Beloved Diamond 1 for when I need Sleeeknesssss.
Greetz to all.
lucky you... wish i had the chance to visit the mwc
i dont like the look of the diamond 2 it feel cheap
and the pro 2 is very biig its even bigger than TyTN II its better if they name it TyTN III
i will wait for a new phone from htc (diamond 3)
Don't like the Diamond 2
Diamond 2 doesn't look as nice as my original diamond. Touch Pro 2 looks better than the diamond 2, but I'm not liking it either. I might just totally skip on the latest HTC phones and try out the Palm Pre 'till HTC comes up with something else.
Didn't HTC hire a designer or something for their new devices??
I think the oncoming HTC devices are ugly... I really liked the touch phones, they were the first phones that just looked good (except the cruise) and especially the diamand/pro
I wish i never got that touch dual i have now im stuck with it until december;(
But i guess it'll be the iphone for then, I already have a decent winmo phone

Chainfire, can you elaborate a little on what you didn't like about the Diamond 2's look and feel? Is it bricky, cheap, squarish? I have a D1 and am considering the 'upgrade'. Thanks.
well, as i compared the dimensions of the new diamond2 to the old it seems it got a bit larger. it now has the size of the iphone, which in my opinion is too large.
i really like the size of the diamond1, it is a phone-size all-in wonder, and not a tablet-pc with a phone function.
the only real advantage i see is the bigger screen for better working but this is also the reason for the bigger dimensions...
the rest of the new features?
better camera? well get a digicam if you want good pictures, 5mp but no flashlight, forget good pics at evening or at indoor places with bad light...
the other updates: memory,sd slot and better battery, well nice but its no world-wonder...
and the diamond pro 2? brick with phone function? come on...
i will stay with my diamond1 and keep waiting.
so my opionion is: size DOES matter
everyone have a nice day!
i like the no2 think i mgit go there if three get there act together and get a stylish phone made by HTC rather than the current junk
but like most ive got 12 months left on the contract so lets hope the 3 is out and ready and stable by then

You can immediately see it is not as small or as cute as the original Diamond ( <3 !! )
It feels a bit 'stretched' in your hand when you are playing with it, don't have a better word to say it.
But the absolute worst part is the 'bottom of the front' as you can see in the picture. They gray/silvery part looks incredibly cheap/ugly IRL, and its just a waste of space with no function (they should have just made the thing a centimeter shorter).
Furthermore, between the small buttons above the silvery part and the touchscreen soft-buttons is a so called zoom-slider. It's hard to see in the picture on that page, but again this is a waste of space - and it looks really awkward too. While I imagine it could be handy while web-browsing (if it actually works, it didn't do anything on the demo models I played with), at least for me that isn't that important and I would have much preferred an on-screen zoom slider in the browser instead. Again, they could have made the thing another centimeter shorter.
It's just one hell of a butt-ugly phone (well ok it isn't as ugly as say, the G1, but it's nowhere near as sleek as the original Diamond and Touch Pro) and wastes space all over the place. It doesn't feel 'right' in your hand either.
Hope that explains it a bit.
Note that I just noticed the Rhodium has this frecking zoom slider as well... bah!
the only characteristic worth mentioning in case you make the transition is the card slot... But really! Features like the enlarged screen (800x480), a wee better camera and a flashy new metallic design won't make me change my diamond... I mean, they aren't features which make a big diff... let alone define a TRUE SEQUEL.
+ they ditched the D-pad and replaced it with a silly horizontal zoom panel... Why!?!?! it pretty much looks like a DOWNGRADE to me.
No thx!
Not me, that's for sure!
I like my Diamond, despite its poor speed and short battery life... but I'm hoping that something else good comes out in the 9 months or so that are left on my 18 month contract!
My preference would be another WinMo phone but faster, better battery, TV out and possibly even proper headphone jack. Doesn't have to be HTC because HTC software is so poor.

I only played with the Diamond2 a little bit today and yesterday but the one thing I noticed is that performance did seem to be noticeably improved. As I whipped around TF3D it seemed quite a bit snappier than my Diamond. Some of the hardware changes do make you wonder but the TF3D software seems significantly better (that being said - I did get WM to freeze rather easily when playing with the onscreen keyboard - oops!) I didn't think the phone was butt ugly but, in all fairness, I was drooling a little.
Just like most people, the HTC people said that the Pro2 seems to be the one exciting people more but while the features are cool it is kind of a brick IMHO. Of course, I also looked at the P6500 and that made the Pro2 look not *quite* so big!
certainly not me, the device as it is is pretty close to perfect in terms of size/weight.
with the diamond2 getting bigger and heavier, it's a big turnoff to me.
i had a choice of buying a north american diamond but did not as it's thicker and heavier.

Thanks for the insight. I'm really on the fence about 'upgrading'. I'm intrigued by the widescreen for maps/pictures/videos and the 5MP camera has also sparked my attention. The cam on the current Diamond is very good IMO and so I'm just figuring it will get even better on the D2. I use my phone a lot for pictures. I have the NAM version of the D1 so the D2 will actually be the same weight and a little thinner. But I do know what you mean about it being 'stretched'. I had an Imate 8502 and it was a narrow phone that was long. It felt very stretched in hand so that's going to be a factor for me. Loosing the dpad (even if the D1's is crappy) is another big downer.
I've actually been toying with buying a Samsung Omnia instead. $200 cheaper, same camera specs but with a flash, widescreen (although not VGA) and a mouse pointer to 'replace' the dpad. Who knows...
My provider gave me a Samsung Omnia for free and after using a widescreen device (yes, I know, WQVGA, not WVGA), the screen on the Diamond seems too small to use. I will personally be going with the Touch Pro2, not the Diamond2. This is mainly because of the bigger screen size as well as the keyboard, not to mention the decent speaker on it and flashlight.
