Wing doesn't connect to AIM using T-mobile's network? - Wing, P4350 Herald Upgrading

My old SDA can always connect to AIM without any wi-fi. I was in a car once, and I turned on AIM because my friend's aim worked and mine worked too. There was no wifi, it wasnt even on, but I was chatting with people while rapidly moving around the city.
With my wing, I surprisingly can't do that. When my wifi is off and I try to connect to aim it says communication error or something. Is there is anyway I can make it work like my SDA? No I didn't have EDGE or anything, I figure it used the actual t-mobile network, the one that regular calls and SMS's use.
Meh?

if you mean the OZ app that comes with the phone, it uses SMS to send messages
if thats the problem, i'd try running the network wizard for tmobile

So you think you had some magic elf connection? You had EDGE. All T-Mobile phones get internet. No you don't have to pay for it.

Charges while on WIFI?

This probably sounds stupid but If I am using my 8125 to chat on MSN and I turn off the phone and have the WIFI only on will there be any charges to me from my Cingular? I thought I read where a guy was charged somehow.
But he might have been smoking something too...
I might turn off my Media Net for a few months and if so I still can use my WIFI in local cafe shops to do MSN.
Thanks all,
you only pay for data which requires to sim card to be in (gprs, text, calls) and any account that you would log onto via wifi.
So if I am using it at home with WiFi only on my network then there should be no charges, correct?
I might be turning the Media Net off for a while but still want to get access to the emails through my LAN.
ok, if you take out you sim, can you still do it?
yes = free
no = $$/££s
but if you pay for the amount of mb you use with your Internet connection, you pay for that instead
Bobby I understand kinda what you are saying but my internet here at home is unlimited. So free if I pay my internet fees.
What I mean to ask is this. If I have my sim card still in place and go to Comm Manager and turn off the Phone Connection and have the WI FI on and my phone connects to an IP on my router, Will the data that is transfered be charged to me from my Cell Phone carrier (Cingular)?
Thank you for replying so often.

NO!!!! WIFI IS FREE!!!!!
Thats what I like. A straight answer.
Thanks
If you are going to do that, understand if your Wifi drops, the phone will revert to GPRS connection if its available. So I'd recommend you install the NoData cab as this will allow you to completely turn off any other access.

i of course understand that wifi is free, but something just came to my mind...
when you encounter an accesspoint that requires you to pay for the connection, how does it work? is it a contract with user and passwd you get to login onto the ap network, or is it possible that they charge your sim(home network of course)? i ask this stupid question because i can see some Orange (mobile operator) hotspots in my town, and just started to think about it;]
on the other hand, these hotspots require you to login prior to use WWW, but seems that you can use any other service with no limits (mail, ftp), funny ;]

Hi Guys,
I past I have some experience where I thought that I am using my WiFi for the Chat.
But infact the bill from Tmobile shows my text message bucket was used for the chat.
I clarified with Tmobile. they confirmed that the chat will be based on the SMS/ Text messaging wich will be using your SIM card not the WiFi.
That was with WM5 I do not know about WM6 though.
If you use WIFI to IM through either AIM or MSN you will be charged for TXT messaging, not internet usage... if you have unlimited TXT messaging then you have nothing to worry about.

T-mobile only cost £1 a day anyway for GPRS, so it shouldn't matter what ya do.
(Unless you live in USA, the charges may be different)

So much misinformation!!!
No WiFi is TOTALLY FREE they can not tell what you are doing on it, when you are on it, or anything about it!
If you leave the phone on and WiFi drops, it uses GPRS instead which costs money.
If you use the IM program that comes with stock firmware (from T-Mobile, Cingular, etc) then that program uses SMS for the messages and you will be charged whether the WiFi is on or not, but it will NOT be sent over WiFi. If you use that program and turn off the phone and turn on the WiFi, it will not work.
Get an IM program that uses IP not SMS.

I agree for now. I have Media Net package for 19.95 Unlimited with 200 TXT messages. So far I have been using both WiFI and GPRS this month and I have use 24 MB of usage with only 3 txt messages. I have been using MSN all month. I dont see any extra charges yet.

My internet drops when I'm on a call. Is this normal?

I've had a Tilt since it launched and have run multiple different roms. What has always happened since I bought it, is that my internet connection will drop when I'm on a phone. I don't understand. I shouldn't, right? None of my other non-WM phones dropped the internet connection.
That's one of the things I loved about GSM, I could be talking on the phone (via BT) and use the internet on it, but not anymore with this phone. IM+ will disconnect all the IM clients, which is the most annoying one. I think I've heard people in this forum say they don't have this problem. Is it a flaw with Windows Mobile itself (Microsoft catering to CDMA), the Kaiser model, firmware or my phone itself?
yep, drops my HSDPA when on call as well. It's probably normal.
hey man you know you can only use the phone and the internet at the same time on a 3g conection right? if its not that then i dont know whats up try a new rom i guess
hey i just saw that another person posted in here and had the same problem on a 3g network so i tried it out i can use the phone for data and a call at the same time im using a wm 6.1 rom not sure what one maybe its a problem with the service in your area
Man, some commas would really help..
Anyway.. when you say that u can use phone and internet at the same time - have you actually tried being on the call and browse internet? It does stay connected, but there is no traffic.
I don't think it has ever worked on my Kaiser. It works on my Razr v3xx. Maybe it is 3G. For some reason, now that I put a new 6.1 rom and a new 6.1 compatible radio, my phone is almost only on EDGE when I used to always be on HSDPA. Well, the battery life is better at least. I'll try again when I connect to a 3G network, which used to be always.
I don't think my Razr was limited to simultaneous voice + data only when on 3G.

I've known this too. Tethering and phone work in 3g for me as well.
yeah i did browse to a few sites made sure it was using the data. even made sure it wasnt just cached pages. hey if ur only getting edge maybe its ur radio rom? i was getting that for awhile new rom and it went away
I'm using HSDPA, never 3G (it switches to HSDPA when 3G is available).. it's definitelly faster.. but I have battery charge issues and no traffic while on call. Perhaps 3G doesn't have those issues, I will try it out.
I do get EDGE sometimes, but it's usually same spots. I guess some towers don't have 3G i-net connection, only EDGE. Some places, however, I always get HSDPA (usually where signal strength is high)
sorry i forgot not all 3g is hsdpa i should of clarified we have hsdpa over here
I have the same problem. 3G or H data connections drop when a call is made or received. reconnects when call is over. Anyone with ideas if it is the phone, radio or rom?
Solved!! After some digging around in the forum I found out that setting a limit to disconnect your data connection will cause this problem. If your using kaisertweak go under "Data" set the "disconnect after" to disabled (default) instead of the 1 minute(advised). for some reason this will now allow data and voice to work together and wont drop your data connection while on call anymore. Good luck with your device.

windows live messenger. so flaky

I installed the 10.6.34.800 build of messenger. Im using 3 network in UK. installed WLM and the Indentify as N95 cab. used to connect fast and reliable.
lately its been pain in the a$$ to connect, it connects to HSDPA, the 3g icon changes to H but then that damn busy icon just spins until it timesout.
I flash new roms on it all the time, so always installing WLM and apps. the first few times after flashing are fine, then it grinds to a halt.
I wonder if there is some file created thats jamming it or some cache file ?
other apps work fine. IE, beyondfeed, google maps,
i would blame the 3 network, but Ive installed IM+ and it connects first time, everytime to msn network, so now Im blaming this $hit WLM. When its in this mood, it wont sync either. sticks at checking internet connectivity , after it goes to H.
has anyone having / had the same carry on ?
TIA
Happens to me too. It always seems to work really well after installing it but then fades.
i had problems with live messenger also, couldn't sync or retrieve my emails, i contacted ms support and they told me that this happens sometimes for no reason. it will work perfectly for a while then nothing. i was told to sign out and then sign back in. doing this works everytime for me.
Have you tried BeeJive? http://www.beejive.com/wm6/
3 sometimes block Live Messenger, depending on what tariff or contract you have at the time. For example if you buy the £5 Internet Browsing bundle, as part of the terms of the bundle Live Messenger is blocked. I've found some of the third party softwares have the same problem with working for awhile then breaking.
A way round the problem is to setup a proxy on your home PC, but this isn't really ideal unless anyone knows of a way of proxying Live Messenger only and not Internet Explorer.
thnx, I tried only WLM and IM+ . I'll stick with IM+ until I change to O2 or find an answer. When it played up again today, I disconnected data in comm manager and put on wi-fi. It connected in seconds on wi-fi, then when I put off wi-fi and 3g back on, it connected again instantly.
its back again to sticking this evening. IM+ works ok on w-fi and 3g, WLM connects on wi-fi only unless I get lucky and keep playing about with comm manager by disabling/ enabling data and wi-fi.
i am on 3 payg for £5 a month, so it could be part of the problem. I know, before, it point blank refused to connect on 3 until I used the Identify as N95 cab.
would love to know what's causing it.
That's the problem that's been reported in other forums/posts, if you stick an orange sim in or use Wi-FI the Live Messenger works without fail (well, almost) but as soon as you use the Three sim it keeps playing up.
The fact that you can connect via Wi-Fi, disconnect and connect straight away via GPRS/3G makes it seem like all they do is block the DNS from resolving? If so it'll be a stupidly easy fix. I've heard it's some setting in the SIM that Live Messenger looks for though, which would be much harder to break.

EDGE/GPRS/3G Questions/Issues/Info

This might be a silly question, but does anyone know if the G1 will be able to access the web if you live in an area where 3G is not available yet? I live north of Los Angeles (who has 3G) in Bakersfield and we don't have it yet. I am hoping that I was not an idiot to preorder the phone and then not be able to use all the cool web features.
Thanks in advance,
Jamie
it should still work on the EDGE network
From my understanding it will work with GPRS, Edge, and 3g so you shouldn't have any problems bro by the way I understand the concern.
With a 1150ma battery, GPS, "big" screen etc, 3G will just drain the battery even quicker.
I will not worry about 3G until an extended battery is released- and the fact that 3G will not be in my market for a year of so.

Hey guys i have a htc wing now, and it does not have a gps. It looks like the gps for this phone is one of the main highlights, because it uses it for a lot of applications. Does anyone know what the gps strength will be like? Will it work will in a building, it do i have the be in direct light for like ten minuites to get a signal?
Anyone with a htc device with a gps already, does it work well?
I hear the android is a-gps, so mabye it will have the ability to somewhat work well when in a pocket, or building.....

Time for a lesson on GPS... It uses satellites in the sky, and you need a view of a certain amount of satellites to find your location (4 will find you but not very accurately, the more the better). If you're in a building, and not right next to a window, no GPS will ever find your location, ever. That's like asking if your internet will work if the ethernet cable is unplugged from the back of your computer and you don't have wifi, it goes against the entire idea of how it functions.
Now, as for the quality of the HTC GPS receiver... People have complained about GPS lag, but I maintain my opinion that it's completely software related, my Fuze had none whatsoever. You don't need to be in sunlight, just have enough clear sky that it can get a reading from the satellites. I've taken trips with the Fuze even on very cloudy days and it took a little longer to get a lock (5-10 mins, it locks in like 30 seconds to a minute with clear skies) but once it had my position, it stayed true. All of the upcoming HTC devices use A-GPS, by the way. Diamond, Touch Pro, Xperia, G1...

He's using the battery draining as an excuse, something to keep him from pulling his hair out because he won't have 3G for another year. Anyone who's used a phone for data features on both networks knows EDGE doesn't hold a candle to 3G.
As for the original post, yes, it will give you all of the same data features on EDGE as on 3G.
The big thing with A-GPS is that it's mainly used to increase the startup speed of your GPS. Instead of waiting 10 minutes to download the almanac of the satellites in the sky from the GPS sats, it downloads the data over your data connection, using the basis of which cell site you're connected to for determining your rough location. This way it only takes about 30 seconds to get a fix instead of much longer.
The sensitivity of the GPS on phones has been fairly good as far as i've seen on devices like the Tilt and such, so I don't see why a phone with such a heavy emphasis on location-based apps would have a sub-par GPS setup. Here's hoping things work well.

Exactly... But when you're without 3G, I guess you try to justify why it's not as good, and that's what he came up with. It's like everything though, people on here try to justify why the iPhone isn't as good as the Diamond/Touch Pro, truth be told it's better in many aspects but comes short in many as well.

I choose D... all of the above
No... it will not work out of the box.
Yes/maybe... it should work someday soon unless HTC/T-Mobile have somehow disabled that ability in hardware.
As soon as I get the phone I will be working on it on the Linux side (not an actual internet sharing app... more of a route/iptables script) and I am sure someone will work on a java solution (although a kernel solution would be faster). There was an application for the iPhone that provided internet sharing but it was banned from apple store and Google has said they won't do that so I think it should be here soon.

I have an issue with my G1 WIFI connection. If i broadcast my SSID I connect with no problems. but if i disable the broadcast it will not connect, and this is with me manually putting in the connections into the phone.
I called TMobile but they said i needed to call HTC. they didn't have a solution.
BTW, I have no WEP enabled. I just disable the SSID broadcast.
I just connected to my Linksys router with WPA2 and had 3G running, connected no problem.
Haitiankid: try entering the details of your network manually and seeing if it will connect then. Also, as for the 3G fading in and out, are you in a week signal area for 3G?
wifi working
I got my wifi to work. It was my routers fault. What I did was in went into my routers settings by typing 192.168.1.1 and entered 'admin' (no quotes) and no password. Once in my settings I changed my brocasting type from b&g mixed to all mixed changed frequency to auto, changed network key from shared to open and wifi started working. I don't know if all those steps were neccesary but it worked for me. Hope it works for some else.
As for the 3g it seems to be getting better
for those of you with the 3g/edge switching problem...
Hey, if uve got the 3g switching to edge back and forth continuously, its likely because you didnt get a new SIM card when u got the g1. It simply means you have an old SIM card that doesnt support 3g well, call tmobile up tell them your situation, theyve given most people a free new SIM card thats more compatible.

I don't think that's the case. I've had the same SIM card since 2000, no problems like this. If any SIM is too old to support 3G, I'd think one made 8 years ago would definitely be the case.
It sounds like he's in a bad coverage area, which could be lots of things. There is a coverage map on the T-Mo website, don't know if it shows 3G. Or it could be the building he's in. My phones have never worked at my grandmother's house. I get full bars on the front porch, and full bars the second I get out the back door, but no signal in the house itself. Even relatives on other networks get little to no coverage inside the house. Probably the really really old insulation and building materials are blocking the signal. At my last apartment I only had a good signal on the corner of my bed, and that disappeared when new neighbors moved in upstairs.
These are radio waves, which aren't foolproof or perfect, they encounter all kinds of interference. Nothings going to be as secure and consistant as a wired connection. Nature of the beast, unfortunately.

Careful dude, with the security set to open anyone within range (neighbors, wardrivers, etc.) can use your wifi to get on the internet. Try using WPA or WPA2 security, but leaving it all mixed and frequency at auto.

Can't connect to internet via 3 mobile

Hi All,
I have an x1 and have just signed up with three due to the unlimited email available in the $8 classic internet pack. I use email a lot!
I have not been able to access the internet despite having the correct APN settings (3services). I've tried with another phone and did not have issues so its the phone rather than the sim.
I called 3 customer service and they werent able to assist - said that as its not a 3 phone that the services are not guaranteed.
Does any one have any ideas? I'm in Australia.
X1
I'm having the same issue, I use internet on the phone over data in the 3.5G network. On other phones connection stays on 3.5 but on winmo the connectivity seem to drop all the time. It's pretty annoying having to reconnect ur data connection all the time. I had this problem on samsung i780, HTC Touch Pro and now i bought a xperia x1 cos i love it. Due to this i'm finding it difficult to use apps on my phone.
Any particular reason for this or bug we could fix. A tweak or reg edit we could try. Pls help
