Google Maps GPS doesn't move with map while driving - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

Any one know what I am doing wrong with my phone? When I drive with google maps and get the gps working and everything the little blue dot moves along the way but doesn't scroll the screen over while I'm moving, I have to move it myself. Am I doing something wrong here or pressing something I shouldn't that deactivates it? Let me know.
thanks much

I think I've seen this happen if you scroll the screen yourself, I think there's some way to center the display or such and it'll then follow. Otherwise you're panned and it doesn't move.
This is a good thing if you want to pan the map to look at something and don't want it flipping back to your GPS location immediately.
I've yet to use Google Maps with a GPS honestly, because I have iGO and TomTom so it's possible there's a bug I haven't seen, but that's how it's "supposed" to work.

No, you're not doing anything wrong. For google maps, once the blinking blue dot, (your location), is centralized on your screen, it will move as you move, as long as your location (blinking blue dot) is centralized.
If you happen to, let's say, use your stylus or finger to move the screen to view surrounding area, and de-centralize the blinking blue dot in the process, it will not re-center itself. But it's still navigating though.
You'll have to centralize the blinking blue dot (your location) by going in 'menu', and select "My Location". Hope this helps

It's up top.. google maps

Also,if you can see the blue dot on your screen, double tab the dot. It will re-center it and start following again.

iGO8 and TomTom 7. I owned Tom Tom 6 but got 7 from the threads here, it's a reasonable update.

Recommendations for apps for a Tilt noob?

Hi,
New to the ppc world and just got the Tilt on 10/18. Love it btw-and have figured out how to uninstall most of the bloatware that ATT includes, and also have figured out cab install.
So here's my question/s? Just a few if anyone would care to help-
1)Whats a good weather app that appears on the today screen that doesn't take up lots of real estate?
2) any suggestions for a good basic GPS app? (nothin fancy-don't want to pay ATT's monthly Telenav/saw google's already)
and last but not least--
3) Any way to put a power on/off icon on the today screen?
(I have fat finger syndrome-lol-and the power button on the side is a pita)
any suggestions are appreciated; along with any other "must have" apps.
Thanks,
Alemaker

The weather that comes with "HTC home" is my favorite.
Good basic GPS would either be Google maps - free if you have internet or (tomtom or Iguidance)
3) there's a few yes. I use pbar, but that's even smaller

New Google Maps Mobile!

version 1.7.1.4 nice new look
http://mobile.google.com
Loaded and can't say I see much difference? Are the satellite views now hibrid, not sure if street names were on them before. Other than that I don't see the "new".
new directions view - turn by turn list with option to view map turn by turn
new transition slide to next direction
new iphone-esque plop down of location pin (callout)
new context menu for locations - click on a pizza shop after searching
new hybrid satellite view
new landmark labels in above view
double click to zoom (might have been in previous versions)
more
did you even use it for more than 10 seconds?

ummmm, well... yes, but obviously not enough, maybe 5 minutes. I did a simple search for FedEx Kinkos and I guess I missed the "Plop down". These are all great additions, it was just subtle to me. I've been using Live Search more and forgot the details of Google.
I wish Both Google and Live Search could add a "Heading Up" choice for mobile use and perhaps some hot key mapping.
I love Google. I wish I had held onto what I bought of it when it was $86/ share.
Why can't they add an "Update Available" option as on Live Search?
is the short GPS timeout fixed ?
New google maps - 1.7.1.4 - Get it Here
Uploaded it for you guys :
http://rapidshare.com/files/68506543/GoogleMaps_1.7.1.4.CAB
working great on my Kasier.
Enjoy,
NAdavi
whats the difference with this one?
...but doesn't exist an app like GPSTuner but that download/use/cache GoogleMaps images, and draw on it tracks, waypoints ecc ecc???
GpsTuner can use google maps, but you have to download it with the pc, then calibrate it. Will be fine if GPSTuner download in auto google maps images and draw on it
Looks like they integrated the "find location" and "find buisness" into one search function
The directions overview is different
seems a lil faster, but still no drag and drop re-routing. it would also be nice if the program didn't kill itself if I lost data for a sec
edit: I see this was covered in another thread
If Google would just add voice.... WOW!

Hmm, I'd say yes and no. I had to retry once before it aquired a lock. They've increased it, but it needs to be a little longer for a cold start I think.
Hi!
the previous version put me within 10 feet of where I was standing,
the new version, with my standing in the same place, puts me more than 50 feet away !
I am sure someone into GPS can explain better than I can....

That could just be coincidence. The precision of your location is a function of how many satellites your GPS unit has a lock on at any given moment. To really compare, you'd have to have made sure that a similar number of satellite locks were achieved when the measurement is made. And just cuz you are in the same spot doesn't guarantee that you had the same number.
I guess its possible that somehow the new version is "screwed up", but not as likely as the explanation above.
Oh, and yes it does seem like the GPS timeout issue is resolved or at least MUCH better. I hadn't used my GPS on my Kaiser in a few days, and yesterday, I was able to just test the "track my location" feature in the new Google maps. It waited for about a minute for the GPS to start up and get sat locks, then showed my location. So it didn't even ask me to retry. It just worked. The previous version would never do this.
But alas, no voice feature like in Live yet, but still its an improvement.
woudl you guys switch from live search to this new version?
I have installed and use both. Personally, i like Google's better for most purposes. Its a simpler, cleaner interface, with much less clicks req'd. So, I can use it while on the road more easily. Live is more robust, esp with the new voice and gas features. but it bothers me that I have to tap so many times just to get a map of some place.
Is there any way to have the map auto rotate when you are using GPS so you are always traveling UP on the screen?

Not that I know of, in either app. Only true route guidance apps, like TomTom or TeleNav do that currently...

UTM MGRS Navigation

Does anyone here know if there is software available to navigate with UTM-MGRS waypoints? preferably with map display (like Googlemaps).
It doesn't necessarily have to navigate, but only point out what possition I am at now, and in what direction and at what range my next waypoint is.
if so, where?
The idea is;
That i'm able to put in UTM-MGRS data as waypoint, and it will insert it into the map (with a dot/star anything).
After that it needs to be able to display the map with the waypoints on it, and at what range and in which direction the waypoint is. (range/direction is preferably, not necessarily)
Why I'm asking for UTM-MGRS;
i'm in the militairy but the GPS software i'm working with atm is quite outdated,
TTFF is at 6 minuts (if you're lucky).
I navigate quite often, so a fast accurate working GPS is really welcome!
if anyone could help me, please do!
if been looking all around the net, but couldnt find anything
un1ty,
Whats up i've been looking for this solution for the some time too and havent found anything yet! i've ended up just taking my handheld Garmin with me and pray i can get a signal inside a metal ice box (plgrs suck!)
best of luck man
I think OziExplorerCE should do what you want.

shows grid coordinate, and able to plot waypoints in UTM MGRS.
although it doesnt show the right timezone, it does display the right gridcoordinate

Miomap (igo8 ) no keyboard input ??!!

I have installed NoThrills_WM61_NLD_V3 rom and sofar so good.
Home customizer installed aswell as some programms like pocket informant etc
All works well.
Now I heard good things about Igo8 and wanted to use it .
Got it and got it working too
Everything works fine , it finds my internal GPS and it get signals from the satelites as well.
But I can't use it because I see no details on the map , no roads or whatever..and I CAN'T tell it were I want to go because the onscreen keyboard doesn't work , the kaisers keyboard doesn't input anything either
In fact ...in menu the route option is greyed out also, can't acces thatone either.
something to do with the map????
Anyone who has the solution for this problem?

What map do you have installed for igo8? if you goto settings, about then click maps at the bottom it will tell you.
Basemap 2007.07
Sorry if it takes some time before I reply, busy at work and all
At first I thought I had to wait for the gps to get a signal but even then it doesn't work.
Still I think it must have something to do with the map since the route(?) "button "is greyed out in the navigation menu .
It the first on the right. next to search.
You need a map for the region where you are. Basemap is not it. Igo is the best software for GPS I have used so far.

You dont have a region map you just have the one that came with the program. Thats why nothing is showing and the search box is greyed out because it has nothing to search. Did you think that it would come with maps for the entire world preloaded or somthing mate lol .
Anyway theres nothing wrong with your igo8 thats the reason you cant see any details or roads. Download the region you need and put it in your maps folder and everything will be fine
Stupid of me ..haha ....will do and thanks
Got the map in the right directory and its working
Looks like you'r right ATVELL saying Igo is the best, like what I see sofar !
Thanks mskip and ATVELL for waking me up lol
i am having the same exact issues. except i think i have all the region maps, in the map folder i have a file named basemap and then also all the US states. am i missing something else?

Feature Request : Light Keyboard on Textbox Select

Figured I'd throw this out here...
Problem: When I have my keyboard open and I select any text entry box, I then have to press a random key or spin the trackball to get the keyboard to light up. Since I often use the trackball to do this, I end up moving my cursor out of the textbox and have to reselect it
What I'd like to see: The phone seems like it is smart enough to know when a textbox entry is selected and then check to see if the keyboard is slid out. If these two conditions are met, light up the keyboard. Simple?
Can anyone here write a hack to do this?
I second this great idea!!!
thirded!
bump! 10ch
We need this I agree!
Yup exact same problem for me. Perhaps not a 'permanent' light up... Just increase the timeout to say.. 20 seconds
You should be able to choose that as a setting for timing, so you can have it on for as long as your keyboard is out or timed etc. would be very useful

umm personally i think it'd be better the way the other guy said it.the one where it it'll come back on when a textbox is selected. cause i tihnk if you just keep it lit up longer it'll waste more battery even though your not using the keyboard at the moment. (tho im not sure which wastes more battery, the setting for it to light up when it needed, or keeping it lit up longer)
either way, i'd love to see this feature too!
I've got the same problem myself, very good idea. I've just passed this onto cyanogen via twitter and his google code page.
