how to access windows folder in Vista device center 6.1
in active sync 4.5 it was easy
Open Windows Explorer. Press ALT. You'll see a menu. Press Tools -> Folder Options. Go to the View tab. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files and also chose Show hidden files and folders. Press OK.
Now you'll be able to see the Windows folder on your PDA.

Try Windows\Rings
Make sure that when you go into the "Explore" tab in Active Sync, you have selected to UNhide all files and folders through "Tools > Options". Otherwise, your Windows folder won't even appear in the Explore window.

I dont see that option. can you be more specific?
thanks
nathan
After you've opened "Explore" in ActiveSync, tap "Tools > Folder Options". Then open the "View" tab. Under the Folder that say's "Hidden files and folders, tap the radio button next to "Show hidden files and folders". Exit out of that window and your Windows directory folder will now show up.
Hi, NOOBI questions here:
How do you guys manage your programs tab? As I install more and more programs, everything just gets dump under programs. Is there a way to make subfolders under the programs tab that can also be accessed via the start menu? I'm sure there's a way, I just don't know how. Thanks for your help!
Use File Explorer and got to 'Windows' 'Start Menu' 'Programs'
You can create directories and move the Application links into them.
I find it easier to do this through the Mobile Device icon on my PC when connected with Activesync as you can also create new shortcuts for items this way, something that cannot be done through the standard WM Explorer.
hi guys, im new here and got my diamond just yesterday.. its my first pocket pc, and i need real help..
looked around the forums and found a lot of good stuff..
downloaded a couple of applications like advanced configuration tools, gsen, registery editor, but i dont know how to install them. when i unzip the files on my pc the are in xml format and when i double click on the setup file it opens in notepad..
plz help me, what should i do? how do i install these applications?
Instead of unzipping the .cab files on your pc, you need to copy them to your diamond (using activesync or select 'disk drive' when you plug it in).
Then open file explorer on your diamond, navigate to where you copied the .cab file, and run it - .cab is an installer file for windows mobile applications

Do the following, hehe
When you download most programs they will be in .CAB format. Now all this means is that they can be installed DIRECT from the phone.
What I do is create a folder on my Diamond in Internal Storage called APPS and make sure my Diamond is synced to my pc / laptop using Activesync on XP or Windows Mobile Device centre if on Vista and then copy all the .CABS that i have downloaded into the APPS folder on my phone.
Once im ready to install the applications its very simple.
On your Diamond click on START and then PROGRAMS and locate FILE EXPLORER.
When FILE EXPLORER has loaded up in the top left of the window you will notice a memory card icon with the current directory you mobile is pointing to, push this and you will then see MY DEVICE and the location you are currently at.
If you have used a pc before its very similar to how the pc windows explorer used to navigate, anyway, select MY DEVICE and then choose INTERNAL STORAGE and then APPS.
Then its just a matter of selecting which application you wish to install as all the .CABS will be displayed. Select the one you want to install and follow the installation process.
If there are any small programs 1mb or less then I tend to install these onto my phone storage memory and for games I install them onto INTERNAL STORAGE but its up to you. Some programs require a SOFT RESET to work.
The SOFT RESET button is located where the STYLUS is stored on the phone, pull the STYLUS out and then you will see a RED BUTTON inside.
Push this and your phone will restart.
There is more information here at good ol xda-developers.com and also http://modmydiamond.info
Hope this helps!
Tom
thnx guys, but i know this, i did install some applications that end with caB, but when i tried to install the gsen or the advanced config for example, they didnt come in .CAB form. they came as zip and when i opened the file, all there was files and the one names setup was as xml.
i dont know, maybe i downloading the wrong files!! plz help? where do i download those files in .CAB format?

xda is the best forum all around..
Hi, I'm a noob, so please be gentle!
I want to navigate to the "windows" folder on my Diamond.
It won't show at all on File Manager on Windows Mobile Device Centre and when I try to open it on File Explorer on the Diamond through the internal storage route, it just hangs with a blank screen and the "timer".
Can anyone shed any light please, thank you.
Windows folder....
On your PC, you need to uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files" or you won't be able to see the 'windows' folder on your device.
If you're using Vista, open any folder such as 'My Documents':
Organize - Folder and Search Options - View tab - uncheck the above.
Don't know about XP. It's that long since I used that operating system
It does display the "Windows" file, thank you.

it absolutely does
I have to translate to English, but in your Explorer it should be like:
Mobile Device - My windows mobile-based device - Windows ...
that doesnt show all the files though

can you pls add an example? after a very quick see-through I'm inclined to disagree
maybe you should check the following setting in your windows explorer:
Tools - Folder Options... - View (tab) - Files and Folders - Display xxx... option settings, maybe something required is unchecked there
