3G signal strength - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi
I've just got a HTC diamond and i absolutley love it!
I have one question though and thats reguarding 3g signal strength. The town where I work has three 3g masts surrounding it and yet the most i ever seem to get is 2 bars when im outside, a lot of the time it hovers around 1/2 - the most i think i've seen if 3 very briefly. At one point I was less than a mile and had clear line of sight to the mast and only had 2 bars.
Is this normal? Am I expecting too much?
My radio version is .03 as shipped with the phone. I shall try upgrading to one of the newer ones but will it really make that much of a difference?
Thanks
Huw

Hi I suggest you upgrade the radio rom to 05
go here

get this one
Radio v1.00.25.05 (Quad Band,Save Power and have better Network Connection!) "Highly Recommended"
Enjoy
Jules

Hey!
I also noticed this and I have been trying to read up on how to switch to 05 radio. I have some questions about that.
1. Do I have to re flash the whole ROM in order to do that?
2. If not, can I only re flash the radio part?
3. What will I loose in the phone, I guess programs and settings - but what about files on the internal memory?
I have ROM version 1.37.413.3 SVE (Swedish)
Radio 1.00.25.03
I guess I am mostly concerned that I will have to settle on a english ROM and loose things like swedish T9 and such ...

Hi,
1. No, the radio has nothing to do with a full rom update. It only updates the radio unit of your phone.
2. Yes, you can.
3. You will loose nothing instead of your old radio rom ;-)
AFAIK the radio rom is always an international version...
Greeting,
BlueStar

I found the reception on the 03 Radio was absolutely terrible. The 05 Radio makes a huge difference.

Cheers ! Thats what i wanted to hear. Incidently does this apply to 3g coverage? Where i am now has 2 3g masts about 1000 yards in each opposite direction. Outdoor signal 2 bars! Only time I get full signal is almost stood right next to the mast and maybe up to about 500-700 yards line of sight.

I hope I'm not going to disappoint you, but I don't notice any difference between the 03 radio and the 05. I've tried cause I was having a weaker reception on my Diamond in comparison to my Tytn. I don't notice any difference when it comes to 3G. The save power part I don't know yet, since I'm just using 05 for a day now

Odd. I have had better reception under 05 - I keep a close eye on it because I live in a porr reception area. I have recently gone through an Athena and a 9502. The Diamond reception on 03 was shocking. On 05 it is better than either the Athena or the 9502.

updated my radio - no change. pretty much have to be line of sigh and fairly close to the mast to get over 2 bars.

Do I really need to use HardSPL in order to flash a new Radio? I haven't seen my current stock SPL version around - and I guess I'll need that in case of warranty?
Maybe someone who knows what he's talking about should really update the Wiki - not only with the "dos" but also with the "whys" and most importantly some "how-to-undos"
Cheers,
Alex

Yes you will need a HardSPL as there is no other way to flash your ROM. I also moved from the 03 radio to 05 radio. And noticed no significant change on HSDPA (3.5G), it helped 3G slightly and helped GSM (2G) as well.
I can’t comment on battery life because its crap either way. Its honestly the worst phone I have ever owned without a shadow of doubt in terms of battery life! But then I look at the phone and all is forgiven
Oh well, I look forward to the replacement next year, here’s hoping it has everything the diamond has, plus, bigger battery, expandable memory and WM7, oh and much faster out of the box.
Final comment, I will never be able to go back to a QVGA screen again!

I dont see any advantages using a .05 or .06 radio rom. Exactly the same reception as the original. Only thing i see with the new radio roms is people having trouble with the GPS.

Seems i'm not the only one to have this problem, have a look here:
http://www.expansys.com.cy/ft.aspx?k=110642
The pic of it next to a nokia is interesting!

I have the same problem with radio 05 and 06.

Great idea
yes.. keep diamond.. sell house and move
lol
lol
Or get one of those piconodes.
I can confirm the same....the poorest signal....it has nothing to do with my HTC P3600...that´s a great signal right there. Both phones in my hands and the Diamond is searching for signal like crazy.
I hope HTC release a solution.I don´t recommend this device poor siganl and crappy battery life.
my diamond always got good if not brilliant signal.
My Diamond also get poor signal strenght at times (both GSM and 3G). But I dont really care. My SE K600i was basicly fixed on strong signal all the time (only GSM though), but the call quality even on 1 bar in the Diamond far exceed that of the SE. As long as it doesnt fail to receive or make calls (havent yet) it matters little.
why does it matter how many bars you have? if you got signal your good to go!
I have a funny problem with my phone...
I disable the 3G and permanent on GSM network.
when I take the elevator, its normal that the GSM get disconnect cos no signal, but my phone can never re-connect back to GSM network when i get out of the elevator. I have to activate 3G to get back the phone signal...
Anyone encounter this problem..??

I had the same problem. I just upgraded my diamond with the new ROM downloaded directly from HTC club and got improved phone performance and signal sensitivity. I'm happy with this one.
I haven't tried Radios nor ROMs from this forum, but there are some over here, i think people here have been doing a great job on improving not only radio signal strenght but adding functionalities.
HI,
my diamond is alsi getting me down as its a great phone and i love it but its getting to the point where i cant use it to its full potential due to crappy signal strength. Im on orange and on my old spv m3100 the signal was great all the time 3g. With my diamond most of the time the signal is only gprs if i get any signal at all that is as sometimes its just consantly searching. This mainly occurs indoors as if im outside signal improves straight away. I have updated the rom on sunday with no major improvement to signal to be seen. I just wondered if there was anything else i could do or tweak to improve it?
Ok all the guys that are complaining about poor quality on signal:
Have you tested different Radios??
It not hard nor you loose info if you only flash Radios.
Flash a Radio a day till you find the one that works good for you.
Im using .05 and it even gets signal on -2 on the parking lot. Where my old Nokia didn't get any reception.
Greetings guys.
i will have a go at trying new radios tommorow as i needs some sleep. Hopefully i can find one that works best for me in my area of work. At the moment i have .05 . Thanks for the link.

It does matter...
The stronger the signal, the lower the transmitting power when I call, i.e. the larger the battery life...

Wow! Now THAT was helpful advice! However did you manage to work through the technicalities?
Why revive this thread? The forum is a mess already.

Diamond vs Cruise...a big difference!!

Yesterday was the first day that the Diamond was sold to the public. I bought one right away cause the movie on the HTC site brainwashed me
Ofcourse i played with it, but omg, what a difference with the Cruise. This device shouldn't be on the market right now!!
First big problem is the range. This is unacceptable!! I have full range with my cruise in my house. With the Diamond just one line and most of the time the connection fails. This is really unacceptable.
Second problem, the backplate doesn't fit like it should be. i tried it many times, but it doesn't fit right. Ofcourse with the Cruise no problem at all.
Home button feels very fragile. If i push it in, it looks like i gonna snap it
The Diamond isnt made for thumb usage!! maybe the home plugin can be used with thumb, but all others are way to small for using it with your thumb.
The speed of the device is also unacceptable. To be honest, my tuned cruise is way faster. Ofcourse i played with reg settings like the Tweaks known from this forum, but still the Diamond is way too slow. I hope new roms get out very soon.
To be honest, i am not happy with the Diamond. This has nothing to do with learning from the misstakes they made before. this has all to do with making a new device and throw it right away on the market for the cash.
For now my Diamond gets a 6- instead of a 8+ for the Cruise right now. Maybe some cookers can make this device to come alive, but untill then i expect a lot of frustration with this device for me.
Well, I've found this to be the best device "out-of-the-box" that I've had from HTC so far.
Of course, I'm looking forward to the inevitable improvements that will come along, but for now it's about as fast and stable as my heavily tweaked/flashed Kaiser. Which is something of a surprise.
What about your range? And which radio version do you have?
I assume you mean Network reception rather than WiFi?
As I live in London and there are cell towers absolutely everywhere, I have never had any problems. Flashing different radios on previous devices has always been pointless, as it has never done anything to improve or worsen the signal as far as I've ever noticed.
I honestly haven't got good enough ears to notice difference in call quality, but if you pinned me down, I'd probably say the call quality is again very marginally better than my previous HTC devices. That could easily be because the Diamond is shiny and new, and in my opinion the speakers do tend to get slightly worse over time...
WiFi I think is slightly weaker than my Kaiser. Probably only a couple of metres difference when using my crappy old Belkin router, but the bottom of the garden is just about out of range...
Radio is: 0.93.25.NS16
Just collected mine. Fully charged, I used Tomtom for 5 minutes, played a video for around 3 minutes, setup my email accounts, and made around 20 minutes of calls.....Around 20% battery life remains. Touchflo isn't as good as its cracked up to be. Prefer the port on my TYTN 2 tbh. Don't get me wrong the build quality and virtually everyhting is ideal..It's less than half the weight of the TYTN2 (or at least it feels like it). HTC needs to release the updated battery QUICK, the software update that is coming will hopefully sort power consumption, and with a bit of luck it will come with a radio update too. TYTN2 never dropped a call in my house, ever. The Diamond has dropped 3 out of 5....
Still a cracking piece of kit though, and very happy with it..Just hope it isn't rose tinted glasses.

Are you saying that you have the supposedly 'fixed' European version? If you are, that's really, really worrying. But there seem to be a lot of different opinions on and experiences with this device. Maybe some are just dodgy...
I can not lie, I love this device, I had alot of problems with my samsung i780 that I had for 3 months, but after many complaints, they offered me a new phone of my choice. So I opted for the Diamond. Good choice. Only my games or not playable anymore with the higher res.

Which games are those? I got pretty much 90% of the games i own for win mobile working!
I do agree with the initial poster that the reception is rather poor, although i dont get any dropped calls, i cant get hsdpa in my house like i could with the cruise.with the diamond my signal is mostly roaming in my house, i not complaining as im lucky to get any living in the middle of nowhere!
Games like Atomic Cannon 3, hexic and so on...

Radio Reception

Got mine today, I've noticed the cellular reception seems to be quite poor. I live in a bad signal area anyway but this seems much worse than my Kaiser on T-Mobile. Most of the time it just sits here searching for a network. Has anybody else noticed poor reception.
Mine seems about the same as my Cruise so it's acceptable for me.
What radio version is it as a matter of interest?
I noticed mine is on the tad bit low too - I'm sure the Diamond1 had more bars
Ditto
Existing phone 2 blobs, TD2 struggling.
Generally speaking in poor signal conditions: my D2 has one bar less reception than my old Cruise. So I can confirm this issue. No big deal for me though untill now.
Radio version is 3.43.25.19

Same here. I guess we'll have to wait for a new ROM with a better radio.
Yeah a better radio would be nice. Having said that the GPS reception seems to be excellent compared to my Kaiser, I even get a fix in the house now.
Hello
For cactusbob :
can you said how Many signals your catch with your diamond II in outside ?
8 or 9 or 10 or 11 or 12 satellites.
Because on my old diamond the first version i catch 11 signal when i'm driving (it has 7201a chip) and the new version had 7200a chip.
Thanks for your reply and what your navigation software.
@+++
About 6-7 satellites outside, using iGo 8
I'm disappointed HTC still haven't sorted this out. My Touch Pro went back 'cos the reception was much worse than my Hermes (which I am still using).
Bad reception
I live in Chicago and use AT&T. MY Trinity was alright, but this one just looks for a signal. I have more missed and dropped calls than received.
Well initially I was not 100% sure but I am now... I'm struggling to hit more than 1 bar on H though on G it's full
I know for a fact I have full reception on H around my area - I live in London so you would expect it!
Put the sim on a few phones now and they are higher.
If I revive the HD, I'll test in that but I am sure that will prove the same
It's odd as well I'm in London as well and my reception for H varies between 1 and 2 in my house outside if I take a walk to my local station it goes between 2 bars and full 4 bars, but in central I get the full 4 bars.

Will updating radio help?

Hello, most of the time, I have pretty bad signal on my Incredible S, most of the time only 2 out of 4 bars. Will updating the radio help? I'm on 20.4802.30.0822U_3822.10.08.28_M now.
Make sure your back cover is on properly. If you are using a cover/casing on top that may hamper the signal as well. There is no right thumb rule for radios what works for some need not necessarily work for all.
Generally speaking the radio you have should be alright for Incredible S. Try reflashing it and I won't be too fussed about the number of bars as long as you are getting a signal and it is not dropping off you should be ok. It also depends on your mobile phone operator and what sort of coverage they have.
Hope that helps

Loss of signal, poor reception, E instead of H (HTC One m7)

Been using my HTC One now since it's release day and although I wasn't a huge fan when it came out, it's grown on me like moss and i'm now 100% confident that I made the right choice in getting this instead of the S4.
However......
On my daily commute to work, a journey I've been taking for over two years now, I seem to have less signal than all the phones before this one ?
It's the same sim card, same number and the same network.
What happens is the signal will go really low to around 1 - 2 bars and the mobile data connection will teeter around Edge and 3G and come back up to H in parts.
My previous handset as you can see from my signature was a galaxy s3, it didn't ever drop below 3G, was mostly on H and never once went to Edge, on the same trip for well over a year, I've also used an EVO 3D which acted in the same manner as the S3, but the HTC One is really annoying me now as I'm not able to check things on the internet and such, which I've been able to do for as I said a few years now on previous handsets.
I'm currently on Venom rom 1.2.1 and I have an Orange Sim card in the UK.
My baseband is 4A.13.3231.27_10.31.1131.05L
I did try another Radio, however it had little impact on the reception and I was just wondering if anyone else had witnessed similar drops in signal quality themselves?
I'm using a case too, I have three, Double dip flip, Double dip and a silicone case, I've also had the phone without a case and it makes no difference at all.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks.
same problm
I'm in the US , recently unlocked my but but mine all of the sudden drops from 4 bars to no signal. I have noticed that while I have WiFi on, the network signal seems more stable. I've been reading a lot of ppl have the same problm.
I am on TMo in London. When I first got the phone my signal was awesome. I had H with 3 plus bars all the time all the way from home to work, in work, at home. Since the update I have the exact same issue as you. I lose signal completely, it goes to E a lot of the time now. All in all a very poor experience. I was thinking of installing the original radio to see if that would do the trick(I think it was mentioned that the new update had a new radio). I just do not want to root and lose my warranty. I am getting pretty p'd off though so may just take the plunge
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
I'm in the same boat with you guys. My signal varies a lot from H+ to 3G and E and few times is just disappearing completely, taking a good 1-2 minutes until it comes back. I tried like 4 different radios, all with the same behavior.
I'm on GE 4.3 ... stock.
issue solved

I was also facing the same issue. Finally realized that it was because my network setting was on GSM or WCDMA i.e. 3G.
I changed my network to 2G and everything is fine.
try this out.
same issue!!
Is it possible 2b a Hardware problem !
