I have to say after having both phones for the last month I'm not that impressed with the Kaiser.
The lack of accelerated drivers alone is a disappointment.
Other things I don't like are:
No Infrared - I'm not sure what the justification for removing this is.. ok it may save a few pence off the cost - and maybe not many people use it.. but for those of us that do its an annoyance.
Keyboard is worse than the TyTN in every way, it feels worse and definitly doesn't work as well. It misses out more keypresses than the TyTN ever did. (I appreciate this could well be a ROM issue but i've tried a few and they all do it.)
Screen presses are ignored a LOT.. compared to the TyTN its absolutly hellish having to whack the screen sometimes for it to respond.
No light (ok it was crap for flash anyways but it was useful with VJCandela as a torch)
Autofocus isn't any better at focussing, its just slower. It's better for macro shots definitly.. and you dont have to manually twist the lever on the back of the phone.. but it certainly isnt up to sony ericsson AF camera standards.
The softkeys are absolutly stupid, if you have big fingers you press start call or end call half the time instead of the softkey purely because of the ridge that runs round the top of the softkeys from the call buttons being too high.
The internal softkeys are also now in a stupid place to make way for the blindingly bright caps lock lights that were not needed..
The phone slides the wrong way making it incompatible with cases and some accessories for the TyTN as well as frustrating to use for a TyTN user.
The stylus is crap compared to the extending one on the TyTN, and again means I cant use the spare ones id bought for the TyTN..
The extra memory and flash space are very nice.. and the GPS is fantastic.. but I'd rather have those 2 features alone bolted onto the hermes hardware..
Way to go HTC.. alienate one of the biggest markets.. I certainly wont be upgrading again in the future before I have a good look at competitors devices..
Some of your points on the touchscreen responsiveness etc are fair, but I think the design and overall build quality of the Kaiser beats the Hermes. The tilting screen is a really nice improvement, and while I can see how the change in orientation might be difficult for some Hermes owners to adjust to, I don't see how it's in any way inferior - just different. I prefer the solid stylus to an extending version too.
It's much better having all the buttons grouped together IMO - everything's within easy reach. I have (I'd say) moderate size fingers, and have no problem there.
Both camera and keyboard performance could be improved, but I think we're getting into the whole, wider driver issue there. I think the Kaiser still has the potential to be much improved, and I'm vaguely hopeful that those improvements will come.

Its an ancient technology that has been surpassed by both bluetooth and wifi, what could you possibly need to use infrared for these days?

I find the keyboard on the Kaiser, sooo much better than on the Hermes, with the Hermes I actually used the onscreen keyboard instead, it was that bad. The kaiser now has a very usable keyboard that is finally comparable with my P990i. With the only exception being the space-bar, which for some reason can press twice (left and right) which is slightly annoying.

I don't have an issue with this at all, screen seems to be the same as it was on the Hermes, perhaps take a look at KaiserTweak, there's a setting in there I think.

Agree with you here, a light would have been nice, but only for using it as a torch, useless for taking photos.

I don't really take many pictures, and even less since the camera (due to driver issue) is so bad on the Kaiser, but I will agree, that compared to my P990i, the autofocus is poor.
The softkeys are absolutly stupid, if you have big fingers you press start call or end call half the time instead of the softkey purely because of the ridge that runs round the top of the softkeys from the call buttons being too high.

FINALLY, HTC did something good, got rid of that god-damn awful stylus from the Hermes, that was the worst stylus I'd ever used. P990i and Kaiser, have much better non-extending ones.
I have to disagree with the OP.
The Kaiser is heads and tails and improvement over the Hermes.
Agreed, the keyboard is one step down in some respects, but umm...that is about it.
It is a solid device with a high end feel. The Tytn is the VW of smartphones, Kaiser is when you walked across the parking lot to the Audi dealership

Like posted before me, it's an ancient technology. Why IR when you have bluetooth? Plus, you knew about the phone not having IR, so, technically, it's your fault for buying the device and complaining about not having an IR.

Never thought about this really but now I've looked at it, the left handed D-pad when in landscape is more compatible with a gaming joypad and, as I am right handed, I dont have to shuffle the stylus around in my hand to use it!!
HTC and ergonomics...Whatever next!!
Overall I find the Kaiser an improvent on the Hermes, with a couple of notable exceptions:
-The slightly inferior keyboard (but I've adapted to it)
-The idiotic door on the mico-sd port. You need tweezers to open it. What was wrong with the spring loaded slot on the Hermes?
-The soft reset switch on the Kaiser is too close to the delicate mini USB port. It is very easy to accidentally jam the stylus into the USB port and render the phone completely worthless.
IMO the non-telescoping stylus is a HUGE improvement over the Hermes. Give it a few months and those telescoping styli become loose or end up expanding to their full length on their own for no reason. The Kaiser stylus sits nice and flush with the corner of the case, yet the 'nub' is big enough that you don't have to use tweezers or ruin your fingernails trying to dig it out of the silo.

Sorry, I like Audi, but to me you don't get your money's worth over VW.
So I think your comparison is right on. The Tytn II, seems like it should be better, and you paid more for it, but after all is said and done, it's not really worth the extra cash.
my 8525 was free and so was my tilt so i feel the price was worth it. ha!
FWIW the Kaiser is streets ahead of the Hermes.
The Hermes was a huge leap forward from the Wizard, and the Kaiser is another leap forward again.
Of course if mine didnt scroll or actually do what I wanted when I wanted it to then I might feel differently...

Generally I love the Kaiser (as I'm sure some know from a certain thread!) and I have no way to compare it to the Hermes. But I do have to agree on the IR thing. It was great for quick file transfers and Activesync. OK so I have now spent a day fiddling with the Kaiser and got my laptop and it working just as well over bluetooth but it was still nice as a backup incase the USB ever failed as you can't establish a new partnership over bluetooth, only IR / USB. Another thing I did use IR for was as a remote shutter release for my camera. Bit of hacking and it saved me UK£25 on buying the proper remote. So there are still applications for IR.
Also the camera flash(light). I came from the HTC Universal which had these things too.
Overall, I knew what the Kaiser had, what it didn't and made my choice with that info so I can't complain, just agreeeing with the OP on a couple of points that I can relate too.
Oh, and I drive a Vauxhall (GM) car, never bought into buying a badge! (though you could buy a Skoda, it's the same car, just a lower purchase price!)

Totally agree with all your points on the Kaiser Steve, as to be honest, I TOO miss the IR for its compatibility to Vcard transfer to people with older phones.
A Skoda???
Audi A4 £23k, VW Passat £19k, Skoda Octavia £14k. Same floorpan, engine, errr everything really. Is a badge really worth £9,000?! (And the Skoda comes with a flappy paddle gearbox as standard...) Off topic...nah!
IMO the d-pad is muuuuch better than the tytn's. the only thing i was missing when i've started using Kaiser was the comm-manager button,
but with Hbutton it's no big deal to map another key to Comm-Manager.
I never liked the Email and Internet button at the top...now i'm quiet happy with all buttons in one place...
No need for flashlight...never used, and if i ever use, plamp would be enough bright i think.
And the Keyboard feels much better with the fingers...just love it...
my car: opel omega..... no further comment...
My biggest form factor nit compared to the 8125 is that the stylis needs to be retrieved from the left side while the keyboard is open, which makes it difficult to pull out if you are right handed as your left hand is in the way. On the 8125, it was in the upper right hand corner while the keyboard was out and pulling the stylis was very handy. Not sure how the 8525 was set up, but I think it was the same as the 8125, right?
Besides that, the 8125 had stereo speakers, which I sometimes used for music but really made the most difference when on a speaker phone call. And the normal 2.5" headphone jack was a plus. Why HTC does not include a USB adapter (which csot more to ship than the purchase price) is beyond me. It's like someone said, "Hey, let come up with a proprietary headphone jack so that no one can use a third party headset without buying an adapter, which we don't even sell???
Do they think they are Apple or sumthin?
I knew that would be a controversial post..
I actually agree that the D-Pad on the left is better... However.. the phones crap for playing games anyways.. and once they had ruined it on the hermes i'd have preferred it to stay how it was as I was used to it and my accessories would have worked.
I'm now wondering if the reason my screen is so poor compared to the hermes is something to do with the screen protector then if no one else sees it as a problem, I used a custom crystal-clear harder more plastic one on the hermes.. on the kaiser I used the one supplied with the phone (the crappy rubbery plastic one supplied in the box - im not sure if it comes with all tytn2's or if Orange add it), maybe that is in some way affecting the screen?
The stylus I might get used too.. but at the moment I definitely prefer the thicker one from the tytn and never had any problems with it coming loose (though I lost a few from putting them down and walking off)
Infrared is useful for all kinds of things.. I can use it to talk to older phones, older laptops for a modem connection, servers for a terminal.. all sorts of stuff. Its almost essential. I didn't actually know until the first time I tried to use it that it wasn't there!! Its a shocking ommission in my eyes.
Its like removing the dvd drive from every pc and saying yes dvd's are old you should all burn and use hddvd or bluray now.
The build quality is better, or feels it.. but I think time will tell how robust the hinge is, it certainly doesn't look as strong as the hermes fixing..
WOW! I cant tell you how much i like this keyboard with my Mogul. It paired up with no driver download required. Just make sure you enter the same passcode and press return with the keyboard immediately after pairing with the ppc. Instructions are minimal in the box, online are better. I thought it worked very well right out of the box. It was fairly accurate and seemed to improve as I used it and played with the sensitivity (lessened it, as I was getting multiple letters occasionally. It makes a click sound every time a key is recognized. The laser projected keyboard is very visible in all but the brightest of rooms. The futuristic look and function is beyond belief. The reviews were slamming it for some reason. While it might not be the ultiimate solution to mobile computing, it is so easy on my eyes (much more so than the onscreen popup keyboard, tactile keyboard or "full screen keyboards) I dont have to use my reading glasses! I paid $149.00 at Fry's in stock here in Houston. Total accident that I stumbled onto it. Did i say it is less than 1/2 pack of cigarettes in size? A bluetooth laser projected vrtual keyboard! You have been warned. I saw this same thing floating around the net years ago and thought it would never happen. It has and it works! Now I want the bluetooth projector (not out, but was in same picture years ago).
Anyway now for the cons, andd they are minor in my opinion. It requires sitting on a flat surface (has a microswitch on bottom that turns it off if lifted though it repairs instantly upon repowering) which makes use in a car difficult if not impossible especially if moving (now if they would have built a clip on it to clip it upright on say a notepad!) That is about it. Btw I paid retail and get no compensation from any manufacturer and I think it was worth it. You wont believe the look on friends faces when you pop it out of your top pocket!
link to the manufacturer's or reseller's website please?
Wow, this is really expensive.

I'm not sure I'd want to use a bluetooth keyboard when the Mogul already has a built-in keyboard, kind of overkill if you ask me.
Also, what's the battery life on this thing and the effect on the Mogul when paired up with it?
Here is the link http://www.vkb-support.com/index.php
The claimed battery life is 2 hours of active typing. The laser dosent use much power I wouldnt think. Also you think the keyboard on the mogul is good? You must have great eyes and be into texting. It is not a better keyboard (the mogul) nor is it more accurate. Re: The price yes at 149.00 it wasnt cheap, however a bluetooth folding keyboard is 149.00 at Best Buy and a palm bluetooth (not compatible with ppc) was 89.00. So you choose what you spend your money on. I personally think it is one of the most futuristic accessories I have have ever seen and it works very well maybe not perfect but neither is the user! 2 good dinners for my family of 5 easily costs the same and all I get is a larger waist with the dinner. WOAHHH!!!
you can get TWO dinners for 5 people for $150? Where are you? In NYC a family of 5 can't eat that cheaply unless they go to McDonald's.
Still not understanding though, the Mogul/Titan HAS a built-in keyboard doesn't it? Why then do you need a second keyboard?
yes it does have a tactile keyboard, an onscreen keyboard and i have even dowloaded larger onscreen keypads, however none of those are like typing on a full size keyboard. The VKB is better when being at a stationary location and would like to type easier. I avoid detail when using any of the onboard solutions due to the inconvenience. I am over 40 and the ability to read without glasses is slipping away and that has a lot to do with my preference and the fact I actually TALKED to the girls I was chasing when I was young and single so Texting isnt second nature to me. I really want a total voice command of some type preferably not via a web connection but onboard the phone. Actually if HTC would combine a virtual projector, vitual keyboard and phone the size of say a credit card with a terragig? Is that too much to ask? or do I have to wait for an underdeveloped nation to bring it to me? Btw regarding food, I didnt say a nice restaraunt or nutritious! and surely no good drinks. In NYC you couldnt even afford the toll road to get to the restaraunt with 5 people!

toll road? unless you're part of the bridge and tunnel crowd coming into the city, we take the subway by and large. It's efficient, clean, and safe. Just the tourists are afraid of it. Don't know why, but that's their lookout.
Oh, and there's plenty of places to eat that are affordable, just not kansas affordable (no knock on kansas, I just have to believe that prices in kansas are considerably less than NY).
I have one of these, and I like it, but there are probably a few things you should consider before paying the bucks. First, it's got a major cool factor attached to it, however, if you touch type, it's likely going to drive you crazy, it's a full sized virtual keyboard, but there is no touch feedback, you're going to have to watch yourself type unless you get very good. Also, it's no good in high light situations, you won't be able to see the projection of the keyboard. It will only work on a stable, flat surface, don't expect to be able to whip it out in your car or lap (has a cut-off switch on the bottom, and does NOT like anything that will interfere with the infra-red reading that detects your finger touch on the surface).
Now, all that being said, it's still extremely neat and handy to be able to carry a full sized keyboard easily in your pocket, and using it will certainly turn heads, and even having to look at the keyboard to type, I can still certainly out pace my typing on the hardware or software keyboard on my kaiser and tytn..
It is HID compliant, and will be picked up as an input device natively in wm5 and wm6 from my experience. It is rechargable, and has a decent run time, never used it until it's died, so can't say on real world total run time.
is there something to turn the hd2 into a real cycling computer ?
and i mean accurate like with a sensor on your tires wich registrate wheel rotations etc .
or is it possible for an hd2 to recieve ant+ signals from for example polar sensors ??
maybe something like pedalbrain for the iphone.
http://en.pedalbrain.com/how
even better, look on open market and you will find a cycle computer app which uses GPS. you won't get any cadence calc's with it though
yeh i know that program .
there are some programs for it .
i mostly use sportypal .
but cycling computer on gps isnt that accurate as when the info comes from the ant+ device on the wheel of the bike ..
and in forests the gps isnt always even good sometimes .
also when you standing stil for a minute the gps software keeps counting wich makes your results even less accurate.
and since its possible for the iphone , there must be a way for a hd2 to have something i guess..
jeez, the bikers tend to fall. the mobiles tend to break ;(
on the road bikers dont fall to often.
maybe in the woods .
but even then you have solid cases to put on your bike wich can protect the phone verry good,.
even if you dont wanna risk your expensive hd2 or something , then buy a used htc diamond for little money.
its stil more expensive then buyying an expensive polar bike computer
anyway if people wanna risk their phone or not i still wanna know if there is an option to make it
cyclocomp
Afraid I dont know of anything like that.
Like was said before, pay the money and buy a cheap cyclocomputer with spoke pickup.
I also mostly use SportyPal and while its not real accurate, it is more than sufficient for my needs.
It's not like I am an olympian in training or anything.
If I stop to chat or whatever, I think something like, "I must have spent like, 3 mins there talking to my mate at the lights, given that my ride maybe took me like 1 hour and I spent 3 mins stationary, then I may guestimate, or even better, get a calculator out and subtract 3 mins from your time and divide your distance as quoted on SportyPal by that time", type thing.
Just my halfpenny worth.
Oh dear, I feel I have been somewhat facetious, but then I do apologise wholeheartedly, as I have had a particularly sad day.
Regards.
Hei sportypal is quite good, and I hope it will be better in v. 2.
At the moment I prefer "Run GPS" its quite accurate and has for me det very important possibility to use extern heartrate monitor and candenz (Bluetooth).
Its not free:-( and I hope they will make better graphics.
GPS Cycle Computer v3.10 looks promising, but not accurate and could use heartrate belt. Unsure of the future dev on this?
I've never been one to buy into the cancer causing aspect of mobile phones, but after recently seeing the City of San Francisco pass a law requiring cell phones show there radiation output it got me thinking .
How much radiation does the N1 put out? How is that in comparison to other phones? Do smart phones put out higher amounts of radiation?
My biggest concern, and what got me thinking was the fact that until 6 mos. or so ago, I only had the phone near my head on the occasional phone call (duh).
But now I have a Nexus dock that I use as my alarm/bedside clock. This thing sits near my head 7-8 hrs every single night running bluetooth, etc.
Is there legitimate reason for concern?
I realize this should prolly go in the overall General thread, but I'm never up there and I'm mostly curious about the N1's radiation while using the desktop dock.

If you're so worried. Move to a cave dude. Do you know how many "wireless" signals and radio transmissions there are in a city?
23548723958723985729837652983572 to be precise.
Why don't you get a Geiger Counter if you're that paranoid?
wait, every phone goes thru FCC testing and given a SAR's rating, and this info is available for every phone on the market. the nexus was rather low at around 0.7 if i remember. what is this radiation thing that san francisco is asking for? i thought it would be the same thing.
for more info on radiation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phone_radiation_and_health
list of highest radiation phones:
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6602_7-5020357-1.html
FCC says SAR is 0.37 head / 0.74 Body W/Kg for 1gram on GSM.
international standards use 2grams which would make it max at 1.39. The US max is 1.6

If you're so worried. Move to a cave dude. Do you know how many "wireless" signals and radio transmissions there are in a city?
23548723958723985729837652983572 to be precise.
Why don't you get a Geiger Counter if you're that paranoid?

Easy Tiger, I'm not paranoid, just asking a question that I'm sure others have more knowledge about than I do.
And thanks to flybyme's helpful cnet link I found this piece of information:
If you're concerned about limiting your SAR exposure, you can take a few easy steps beyond purchasing a handset with a low SAR. You can text instead placing a voice call, use a speakerphone whenever possible, and carry your phone at least one inch from your body. Some researchers also caution against using your phone in areas with poor coverage since phones emit more radiation when searching for a signal. Children, which have smaller and thinner skulls, should limit cell phone use, and all users, children and adults, should not sleep with an active phone next to their bedside or under their pillow.

plus, dont mobile phones emit the msot radiation when you're in a call?otherwise, when its standby all its doing is jus in the bath of EM waves that we all are in...
Did you not read the study that stated phone radiation actuality reduces the chances of developing Alzheimer's?

Look there's even a picture of the N1 there. Look on PubMed or something for a definitive study.

Yeah, and the fact that using a handphone also makes you smarter compared to those who don't use one.
As I think watch is convienent and easy take, but watch cannot communicate with others. So, can the Nexus 6 be designed into watch appearance?

I stopped wearing a watch when I got my first cellphone that had a clock on it.... because WHY?
Watches are very inconvenient and uncomfortable. They force you to twist your wrist in an uncomfortable direction.
A "Smart" watch is not very smart at all, because its screen is too small to be even slightly useful.
And it can only duplicate a (subset) of the functionality of the host cellphone... so again.... WHY?
You have a phone in your pocket, which can do EVERYTHING WELL, so why suffer with a watch that can do very little.... poorly?
These watches are going to be a VERY short FAD.... and people who buy them will start leaving them at home, because they are NOT essential, ARE uncomfortable, and really don't matter at all.
Now let me explain what a marketing gimmick is.
A marketing gimmick is.... wifi in a car. You're going to PAY EXTRA for a dedicated cellphone service for your car when you have a cellphone with wifi in your pocket you can share data from? Gains you nothing AT ALL.
A marketing gimmick is.... cell networking built into a TABLET, because like a car, you already have a cellphone with wifi in your pocket from which to share your data connection. You pay more for the hardware, and you pay more for the extra SERVICE, and yet GAIN NOTHING.
A marketing gimmick is... a smartwatch.
A marketing gimmick is something that is entirely USELESS that costs the manufacturer VIRTUALLY NOTHING to be used to TRICK DUMB PEOPLE into thinking that they are getting something REALLY AMAZING, **AND PAYING MORE**, when really, they are given absolutely nothing of any value at all.

I agree. I can think of two uses for me to have one, and I don't need either use any more.
Use 1 - When I was an IT contractor, I used to take public transport and navigate on foot to job interviews. Glancing at a watch could have made that easier
Use 2 - when I used to travel public transport to work with my phone in my pocket and my headphone jack plugged in, it would have been convenient to pick new tracks without constantly trying to get my phone out of my pocket or keeping it permanently in my hand.#
BUT, neither of those are applicable to me now so they're use is gimmick only.
I do like a proper watch. A nice, Swiss one preferably. For no real reason other than because I like them
@doitright
Well said and spot on. I was all like:

Thinking surgically installed velcro? Super magnets?
I had to abandon my project, kept hitting the wife in the head with it while sleeping.
