Dear fellas,
Although this topic has been briefly discussed in various locations, it hasn't gotten "big" enough.
I know a number of ya guys are having this problem. The touch-sensitive action button used to focus does not focus the camera (and yes, I have set it to "touch & press").
Mine works intermittently, in fact, doesn't work most of the time. I know it's 100% not a hardware problem, as the button lights up and brightens up my screen according to normal behavior. Now I'm wondering, for those guys who don't have this problem, do U have a different version of the camera app?
K.. mine's the stock HK 1.93.831 ROM and my cam app is version 6.00 (build 31516).
I'm not sure what causes this problem. Although I'm not a camera freak, but this prob makes my baby "imperfect".
Pls post yr ROM and camera version (I wonder if there's a difference) and state if youre experiencing this problem. Thanks!
Hi MasK,
I'm having the same problem as you, the "touch & press" feature didn't work most of the time.
I'm using HTC SG ROM 1.37.871.3, camera version 6.0 (Build 31364).
I used to think the camera didn't focus properly until I took some time to play with it. It's pretty slow, but mine seems to work. When I touch the button, it will take anywhere from 1-5 seconds to focus, and then the cross-hair turns green and beeps to indicate focus lock. At first I didn't realize I needed to wait for the beep, so my shots were out of focus. Seems to work fine now that I know that.
I'm currently on stock 1.37.401.3 with camera 6.0 Build 31364 ... same as previous post, just a different ROM region, which I doubt makes a difference.
i have a similar problem where i run the camera app, then the 1st time i place my thumb over the button nothing happens, but if i take my thumb away and try again it will work fine.
It will continue working fine untill i restart the camera app, just never registers the 1st attempt.
This does show that there is some serious prob with this functionality. For me, it's the first time that has a higher chance of working.. not subsequently.
How abt the rest? We needa find out what's causing this!
upz...
Anymore ppl having this prob?
Same here. Most of the time, including 1st time also fails.
+1, most of the time I have to click on the button to do the focus + photo. When I just touch, the camera tries to focus but the square doesn't become green. Sometimes there's no white square at all.
Hi,
mine recognizes the first touch so it focuses correctly but after i take the picture, it doesn't focus anymore when i touch it. actually i just found out about this focus thing and tested. until now i always just pressed the button when trying to make pictures and it always makes a focus and then capture the image. is this OK or it makes them better if i first let him focus and then press the button all the way?
p.s. i do have "touch and press" selected.
p.s.2: is there any way i can change exposure time or something like that so my pictures won't get blurry when my hand shakes or something? many of my pictures are fuzzy because i don't really have a steady hand :-s
Best regards,
Florin

Yep that's how it works and I don't seem to be having problems, just tried doind a few shots and it works perfectly.
Everytime I touch the center button the white square appears and the camera does the autofocus until it turns green. Then I change the orientation and do the same again. I just did it 6 times in a row and the autofocus worked perfectly all the times.
I had this problem with all my previous ROMs.. I am now on Bepe's 0.96 which has the latest camera app and the problem is no longer there - I can touch and press to activate the autofocus as many times as I want after shooting as many photos as I want. No problems now.

Cool.. so it goes to show it's a pure firmware issue. I'm wondering perhaps it's due to registry tweakings that creates this problem.
Any more feedbacks?
Is there a difference in quality if it makes the focus on touch and picture on press versus focus and picture on press?

No difference in quality, however with the "touch-then-press" focus you see a focused picture on the display before taking the shot.
Mask,
Can you tell me what is the camera app version in Bepe's 0.96 Rom?
I just changed the camera capture setting to "press" rather then "touch and press".
Now all I have to do is point at what i want. Then just press the button down and it does all the auto focussing itself and then takes the pic.
Couldn't be easier.

I actually prefer the 'touch and press' option, because I might end up needing to re-adjust my position before taking the shot.. and having the 'touch' to autofocus, before 'press' to shoot allows me to do so.
@MasK: I don't think it's a firmware issue or related to registry tweaks, but more a issue related to the camera app - bepe noted that it was a newer version (thus you won't see the Resolution icon in the Settings anymore - you can still change the resolution via Advanced settings). You could ask bepe more about the camera app and whether he did any tweaking in regards to the camera.

Yeah I know what your saying, I tend to just point n click, let it auto-focus once clicked and take the pic. As long as I'm pointing at what I want and I'm as far zoomed in as I choose then it's fine. I'll take a load at a time and then just delete the unwanted ones later.
But none the less I think the general point is that everything should work!

Quite right. I do not see why HTC overlooked this problem. Seems to me that HTC rushed the release of the Diamond without going through more intense test phases.

Completely agree, it's plain to see now that the phone was rushed. I know for a fact that if I hadn't found this site and wasn't able to flash the thing with new ROMS and applications etc then I probably wouldn't of bought it.
In effect this site is doing the work that HTC should of done in the 1st place. We shouldn't be finding ways around their problems by simply saying "oh doing it this way doesn't bother me". It would of been nice to have the thing working smoothly from release.
But then again this is half the fun right? Mucking around with new ROMs and apps to set it up how each individiual likes.
I know that I would feel sorry for anyone with a brand new HTC Touch Diamond that is still at factory settings!
The one I am running now pisses on the phone it was 2 weeks ago
Has any one found a compatible 6.1 camera driver? I have been searching and i cannot seem to find one.The Nadavi_HTC_Camera_5_0_4_2915_00 driver i had on 6.0 no longer works.

What do you need a camera driver for?!
Isn't that driver part of the WM6.1 update?

Dave
it still seems a little slug-ish, especially when is little lighting. I do a lot of video, so i assumed the 6.1 update would have fixed it, but it still seems the same as before.

The Kaiser camera is Very Bad in low light. I was embarrased by an N95 owner when filming my son playing at home.
The drivers made some improvment, but not enought IMO.
Dave
Well I heard that its not a driver issue but more of the CMOS that came with it... Correct me if im wrong (and I hope I am) as that's one of the main points why I bought this phone instead of an N95
I think there is a bug in the camera software meaning its pretty useless in low light. Anyway I came across a workaround that works ok for me. Switch cam on in in low light. Frames per second (FPS) will be pretty low at about 2 to 3 and everything will be blurry. Right hold hand in front of lense (with cam still on) so that everything is black. Switch off phone using power button (brief tap - don't power down completely). Wait a second and with hand still in front of the lense so it is completely covered press power button on again, wait a second or two then remove your hand and hey presto FPS will be about 18.
Try it out
Cheers

Lol, I came across the fix in another post some time ago (can't take credit for it) - you would think that there would be a software fix for this! Guess HTC aren't interested - anyway enjoy
cheers

yeah that's what i do now, but the brightness is much darker. i guess there isn't really any way to fix it, unless some one can create a whole new camera software & driver.
I'm beginning to think its cheap camera hardware, becuz I've read that the diamond has the same problem!
Just to add my opinion, I had the same problem with the phone being slow. I used a few different roms, I've been experimenting a lot over the past month.
In the end, I've reflashed Sleuth's rom. It's absolutely perfect, fast, stable, and best of all (and with reference to this thread).... the camera suffers no lag.
Thoroughly recommended.
camera software
not only kaiser but all HTC and HTC manufactured PPC have this camera issue. i have seen wizard, tytn,tytn2, tilt, touch etc all fail on camera. My old nokia 6600 vga camera takes better pics then wy wizard
There's a software fix, but it doesn't work perfectly with the camera software in the Tilt 6.1 upgrade(no preview). I'm using it with Schap's 4.31 WM6 rom and it does a wonderful job. Try it.

Try turning the flicker adjustment to 60 Hz. That'll (possibly)increase quality as well.
Hi guys... i'm new in this forum and i'm a brazilian, so sorry for my bad english
I've got my tytn some weeks ago, but i have a little problem... When I take any photos with the back camera (the 3.0mp one), it always ends up VERY blurred. I've noted that before pressing half-camera button, the camera image is nice, but when i take the photo or press half button, the camera image begins to blur. So, i think this is some problem with the auto-focus feature.
A curious note is that when i take/focus photos from very close (aprox 2-5cm from the camera), doesn't show any blur at all... but more far than that it gets completely blurred. And before doing any focusing, the camera picture isn't blurred at all.
The front camera photos don't get blurred because they haven't got any auto-focus, so the pics are shot instantenously.
Anybody has any idea of how fix that blur in the back camera? or at least how to deactivate the auto-focus so i can take some pic from distance?
Oh yes, i already cleaned the lens from inside and outside.
Thank everybody for the patience, and sorry for the bad english
try taking the battery cover off and take the photo and see how it comes off, they use cheap plastic on the camera cover and it gets a film of somesort on it and causes the pics to come out blurry

I use an original WM 6.1 rom, build 3.28.405.0 WWE from date 05/02/08
My radio is version 1.65.17.56
Just a note, this rom was flashed, my original rom was a 6.0 one with radio version 1.26.xx and rom build 1.7xxx from 2007 (i can't remember)
but even with the out of the box rom, the camera wasn't right, I think (I haven't used the camera until a little time ago)
BAD HTC autofocus
I have exactly the same problem with my Polaris Htc!! Please find a solution!!!I tried everything to resolve it but nothing worked. SOme people say it is a hardware problem, but i hope it is a software problem...
Please help me!!!
Thanks for all
Fishos
try updating your camera app to this one
Nadavi's Camera
make sure u install HTC album first or else the Camera app will show a black screen while taking pics.
Also make sure your environment is well light and hold the camera still while takings pics, HTC didnt exactly make the best camera for this phone.
i had the exact same problem with my htc kaiser.
after 1 1/2 year, i decided to send it back to t-mobile to have it replaced due to a hardware warranty issue. the knew about the problem. there seems to be something wrong with the lense/sensor the auto-fokus uses. dunno.
about 2 days later i got my replacement tilt (refurbished one), reflashed to a anryl wm6.5 rom i used before and now the picture are way better
so you might try to get yours replaced.
The point is: your autofocus does not keep its parameters while the image is shot. Try hard resetting Kaiser, then install Nadavi's patch mentioned above, add latest HTC Camera and welcome!
P.S. If you do really need a cam in your Kaiser, switch to Android. Some builds support the camera, but it is... manual. I mean, you focus with a scroller wheel: far from perfect, but in some 50 pics taken you'll be into it quite nicely.
set the camera button to take the picture immediately and not full press
Title pretty much says it all. I went from the Titan on Sprint to Kaiser on At&T, and I hate the camera app. It's slow; unresponsive; takes shaky photos; and has no option (that I can seem to find) to turn off the sound effects.
Has anyone been able to get a different camera front end on the Kaiser? I would prefer a spin from something like the Titan; but really anything that fixes the above problems is good with me.
Thanks all!

Tried it on my Sprint HTC mogul, and it an caused error. I can open program and snap a picture... but it gives me the error of frame... so it can't save or open picture. I had HTC album as well.
I had to do hard reset to get my original camera back.
Before fixing the screen the camera was fine. I have put the phone back together but noticed the camera doesn't focus. What is that little bit of metal that surrounds the camera, it kind of looks like and earth of some description. After fixing the back on, I have noticed that I forgot that part, the phone works apart from the camera.
sounds like you messed up somehow at installing the cam.
a) try another camera app, to figure out if it's a hard- or software failure.
b) if it still doesn't focus on the other app, you gotta open up your device again and find the faulty spot. Sadly, I do have not a clue what you mean by "earth of some description"
