Hi
How do I assign my own music to an sms text alert? on my TyTN 11
copy and paste the tones you would like to use into the My Documents folder or Windows folder on your phone.
you'll find all the notification tones in settings>sounds & notifications>notifications. Select from the drop down menu and change The tone.
WTF?! When syncing to laptop or desktop, choose storage card preferably and put anything you wish in the ''My Documents'' folder. You might have to create this new folder if it's not present. Try googling your question next time finished with "xda"
Thanks Teh Reaper but I have done as you said and in sounds and notifications it still only allows the sounds that came with the phone
forget the copy n paste method, you have to be very exact where you paste it to, just put your audio or even video files in the My Documents folder from your pc
I had this problem as well when I got my Kaiser. Put the files into the Windows folder. This did the trick for me.
MyDocuments does NOT work for SMS or other notifications. Only regular ringtones work there.
Most likely you have to convert your SMS tones to wma before you are able to use them. SMS sounds didn't work as mp3 for me. There are lots of converters available on the web. Simply choose one.
http://www.google.de/search?q=mp3+t...&rls=org.mozilla:de:official&client=firefox-a
No no no, you don't need any converters as long as they are mp3 or even m4 format, it'll read under settings from My Documents folder
For me, this doesn't work, as you described it. I tried this. My method works for me! It is just a suggestion.
My documents works for Every type of notification!!! Make sure its My documents from the storage card though
For some reason My documents from the device do not relate to sounds and notifications, again, try My Documents folder from storage card. I'm currently using a customized message for Every notification
Thank you
Thanks for your help in resolving issue.Works a treat.
1st time on thread for me,so thanks.

I might have asked this before, but I'm not getting answers anywhere. I really want to be able to have the Tilt access files directly from my micro SD card in order to use them as ringtones, alarms etc.. But every time I try and use a file for a ringtone, the Tilt automatically copies said file to the "My Documents" folder on the main memory. After a while, this is going to cause the memory to be depleted.
Secondly, even if I wanted to use files from the Tilt's main memory for rings and such, it seems there are redundant directories that can be used. But I'm not quite sure of exactly what kind of files should go where. In the Windows folder, there's a "Rings" sub directory. I've put my ringtones in there, and that works fine. They will also work from the "My documents" folder, as stated earlier. However, If I want to access files for use with MMS or text files or e mail alerts or alarms, I'm not sure of where to put them. I'm guessing that if I toss most of them into the main Windows directory, that will solve the bulk of it, but I don't think it works for alarms...
Can anyone help with these things ?
I believe alerts and alarms need to be a .wav file. While ringtones are able to be .mp3's. This is from my own testing a while ago..I could be wrong >.<
you can use .mid, .aac, .wav or .mp3 for ringtones. for ringtones, the files can even be placed on the memory card.
Alerts (such as those for text messages) have to be WAV files and they must be placed directly in the \Windows folder (no subfolder). If you cannot see the Windows folder on the root of your device, you will need to change your Windows Explorer setting to not hide System files.
Ringtones are stored either in the \Windows\Rings folder or the My Ringtones folder in My Documents.
You can find instructions on these forums on how to move My Documents to your Storage Card, however, which lets you store as many ringtones as you like in that subfolder.
Interesting. Thanks guys. So from what I've gathered from here and other forums, alerts and messages etc, definitely have to be .wav files. That stinks, but at least I know now, thanks. Secondly, I guess it would be of help to find that program which would store the my documents folder on the SD card.
Would anybody by chance know what that program/app is ?
One more thing. Is there anyway possible to get rid of the pre-installed ringtones and alerts etc from the Windows folder and such ? I'd love to free up that space and replace them with stuff that I make or find.
Thanks !

i just copied over the My Ringtones folder from My Docs to the storage card and popped in ringtones in there. seems to work fine and is discoverable.
Right i have searched and searched and cannot get the answer i am looking for. I have the mp3 i want as an SMS tone in \storage\my docs, \my device\windows, plus all the other places people suggest and still it will not allow me to select the tone for SMS. Some one please help its driving me mad!
Easiest way if you are stuggling is to open the mp3 trimmer application, browse for the file where the mp3 is, select the mp3, then edit it to your liking. The phone will then ask you if you want it set as default ringtone!!
Hope this helps
Matt
Have you tried putting the files in /Application Data/Sounds/ ? Works for me..
I have never been able to use an MP3 file as an SMS, Mail, MMS, Alarm etc tone. Using it for a ringtone however works fine.
It seems that it only want WAV files if you want it for an SMS, Mail etc tone. So convert the file to WAV using you PC / MAC and drop it in /Windows. Then you can select it.
try putting it on the root of phone memory.
mine never works on internal storage but on phone
memory is fine.
Yep had it in route and still wont work. tried in app data\sounds still no joy. Ill try the convert to a wav file see if i get anywhere with that
nope still no joy with the WAV file
Try not only to save it as .wav but as a wavefile in PCM format
I spend some time back on the earlier QTEK's to get this part working, best shot is that it's still like this.
Kindly
you should copy them to your windows folder on the phone
thats where te other sms tones are stored, worked for me even with mp3 files

lol thanks - as i said above it doesnt work
I've got my worms sms notification located in File explorer>My device>Internal storage.
Then go to sounds/notifications and it should appear in the available sounds list.
Works fine... however I did try it with another mp3 file in exactly the same way and although it appears in the list it won't actually play the sound.
Matt
Available patch for mp3 SMS tones was:
>My device>Internal storage
>My device>Windows.

Tried still will not work
The G1 has a silence mode, but it unfortunately only silences ringers and notifications. If I want to play a game of Solitaire I am blasted in the face with stupidly loud music. Is there a system-wide switch to just disable ALL sound through the built in speaker?
Go to setting -> sounds & display -> media volume bring then it all the was down you should be able to map a. Shortcut to this with anycut.
Hope this helps
Ringtone/Notification Questions
Is there any way to put your own ringtones on the phone through a storage card like on the wing or other windows mobile phones, I just got the phone and am playing with it right now ad so far don't see no way to do this. If there's a way can someone please help.
I added 2 tones from my wing to the memory card from the G1. Placed them on the root of the card and then installed from the market "Rings Extended". Then selected them.
download the rings extended app. that will let you do what you want.
google market: rings extended
+1 rings extended.
I had a stale page load and the two previous posters beat me to it!
-- edit --
also, fwiw, with 'rings extended' I found that the media listing was recursive as I had an entire directory structure from my wm6 phone. So, you can still have categorized directory structures if you like.
if you use the correct folder structure there will be no problems setting up the ringtones

there's a thread with that in it, I don't remember where.
If someone finds the thread for the correct folder structure please let me know, and neiltoe idk how to put it in the root folder market extended, I'm coming from a wing and I had a 2gb storage card for the wing so I took the card out my wing and put it in the g1 it sound like the way u do it neiltoe u have to keep the 1gb storage card.
hopefully this link works:

Alternatively you can just go to the music player, choose a song and press " use as ringtone".
First off, what helped me the most- connect the phone to a pc and enable the usb on the g1. When it pops up (it will look like a mass storage device on the pc) format it and then create these folders at the root of the storage card:
music
ringtones
alerts
notifications
Anything inside music will show up on the music player. Anything outside should not show up anywhere but where it is placed. If you do not format the card first, this will not be the case at least in my experience. Formatting seems to make it all work right.
The folder structure is taken from the tmobile website online instruction manual- cant remember the page

While true, it also means you may have a bunch of ringtones and alerts mixed in with your music, something I dont like
for the record:
/sdcard/media/audio/ringones
etc
works as well, as does
/sdcard/media/video
for video files.
good to know about the alternative folder layouts
what are you using to play video files? I grabbed the "video player" on the market but curious to know what others are using.
Thanks a lot guys, you were very helpful.

put stuff into the folders. uncheck the USB box on the phone (you lose the PC connection at that point). Now your phone can find stuff.

in my experience, this is exactly what you need to do. Format it on the pc while its in the phone using the data cable.
i can not figure out how to get a mp3 ringtone that i downloaded to work when i get a text. the tone shows up in the new text thing to select which tone u want but it doesnt ring when i get a text? my ringotne from a incoming call works. but not the text
thanks chris
I got the same problem. anyone can help?
are you sure the text tone does not work at all? I am running WM6.1 stock on AT&T Tilt which I purchased a couple of days ago. Today, I did not notice when I received the text. I thought I was probably away from the phone. But when I read your post, I doubt that the same thing is happening here as well?
hmm.. experts?
maybe not an expert, but afaik You cannot use mp3 as a message tone. it's got to be .wav
br
bro
[EDIT]
...and I believe You need to drop it in windows folder
You can use a mp3...you just have to copy it to the windows folder.
do u put it in windows folder in sync or on the phone?
i use resco file explorer to transfer it. You can use the default file explorer. Just do it on your phone. I keep them saved on my card because I flash so often that i just copy them from my card to the windows folder.
mp3's will work as message alert tones. Just make sure you drop it in the windows root directory.
If your particular mp3 file doesn't work try another one.
Also, check this thread out:

You can check this app too.

Easiest way is to use MP3Trimmer.
"Assigning Ringtones" problem for TILT phone...
I'm having the same trouble with assigning ringtones/mp3 files as text alerts, alarm clock tones. I installed the .cab file (ringtone manager) mentioned earlier in the thread, and I have all ringtone files in my WINDOWS folder. Howerver, when I use the installed "Ringtone Manager" program and explore my files...my mp3 files do not show up w/in the "Ringtone Manager" program. Any suggestions? I'm relatively new to all of this...please dumb it down for me.

I don't know from where you got the ringtone manager app. I don't see it anywhere in this thread. Maybe that application doesn't support mp3 files as text msg alerts or something.
I always place my mp3 files in the first screen after you've clicked 'Explore' in ActiveSync. I believe it's called "Mobile Device Center". Afterwards, it should allow you to select the file for texts. Try that. It should work.
I put all tones that i plan on using in the root of my storage card... no problems.
OK i have searched and i didn't find anything that helped me
i want to change my*new text message* tone to custom tone i added
i placed in the ringtones folder, but i cant find it in the drop down menu, under my notifications
basically theres no option for it to be set as a sms tone
i tryed to place it in the tones under windows > rings..that didnt work also..it didnt show
i dont get why it is so difficult to change add your own sms tone..like wow cmon
can some one please tell me in step by step guide how to do accomplish this
convert your mp3 to .wav and then use commander/resco explorer to drop it into your windows folder..done

I suggest you drag before dropping
YOu can also use MP3. No problem. Put it in /Windows/Rings/ Folder and then you can select it.
Or in your \My Documents or \Storage Card\My Documents
Not true....i can't find the tones anywere:S i did what you guys said...nothing.
just drop it in the /windows folder and it will work, I just figured how to do this yesterday, dont put it in a 'rings' folder
yeah it works great..thanks man!
it has to be WAV and copy paste to windows folder on the phone not the card.
>and not in ringtones.

Then go to settings<sounds and notification(or so)<tab notifications(bottom tab)<in dropdownmenu action choose messages new text message<then it should be in the dropdown menu.

I had to refresh this info because it was very useful to me and this solution was simpliest I found.
No need to convert Mp3 to WMA and it works. I use storage card method.
i cannot find my window folder so where can i put...
All my ringtones are in "Application Data\Sounds" and it works flawlessly. I can assign any tone to any type of notification.
