What is the best GPS software for Driving Directions?

What is the best GPS software for general driving directions? I have been using Odyssey Mobile... had numerous problems getting my AT&T 8525 to work with an esternal receiver with BlueTooth... finally gave up and bought an AT&T Tilt at the full upgrade price ust fore the built-in GPS... very expensive but one of the best purchases i made ina long time...
Anyway my question is, I cannot even find a well written review of all the GPS software out there for PPC's specifically for driving directions, comparing the features of the application for all the biggest players; Odyssey Mobile, Tom Tom, iGuidance, etc...
Does anyone know of any such review and where I can get my hands on it? I feel as though I am just 'stuck' with the Odyssey Mobile because I don't know any better... have spent hours and hours looking for any reviews comparing them....

There are many you can try. Google Maps, Live Search with Speech input, and Yahoo Go all are free. Pick which one suits you. I use Wayfinder which is a pay but it has speech output for the directions as well as some other cool built in features. They all work with the internal GPS. I also use GPS test to prime my internal GPS when needed. Use google search or lurk around the kaiser newsgroups for info on GPS software.
Thanks but stil no reviews
Thanks for the information, but I still cannot find any reviews comparing them. I have looked allover the place. Note, you said this:
"I also use GPS test to prime my internal GPS when needed."
Why would this ever be needed and what does GPS Test do? I still would be eternally grateful if anyone could find a review comparing the major players out there (I heard that iGuidance has more POI's than TomTom in the US)...

Once again there are many threads with these items mentioned scattered all over the Kaiser and Kaiser Upgrade forums. Did you do an actual search on xda? GPS test is used, as I actually commented in a thread, to help make it easier to use GPS software programs such as Live Search, Google Maps, Tom Tom etc. It is another version of Quick GPS but it is better becuase it has more nuances to it. Did you do a search on Google for GPStest? It has a very nice website.
The information you seek are in the threads you just have to look for it and do your own comparisons. No one knows what is best for you but you.

The one which has reviews and was tested in USA is i-go, try this, I have the gpstuner software it is also a good software, but you need to do your own maping through google earth or google earth and recal. it.

First, I am about to receive CoPilot Live 7 in few hours that came out last week on Wednesday I believe. I will let you know of my personal experience with it. However, the best place for any GPS hardware, software, etc question would be to go to GPSPassion.com where they have everything you need from reading reviews to adding addons to your navigation software.
Hope it helps!

The Best GPS Software
Garmin Mobile XT is the best. It's just like the garmin interface on the one's you buy for your car. It's comes loaded on a 2gb micro sd card. I'm using a AT&T Tilt also. I paid the extra $25.00 for shipping so I had it within 3 days otherwise it might take up to 3 weeks to get.
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=11413
i-Go is pretty, i-Guidance is great for turn-by-turn with audio.
will check out the Garmin suggestion as well.
I still think Tom Tom is simple to use with quick response if you got it working. The only problem is the map, which I paid $250 for US and Canada CD from Tom Tom and it works great.
Google map or Live search is good and free.

Do you have to pay extra for their traffic updates?
Checked out some of the suggestions
So far Wayfinder 6 has the best upside. No sd card needed just set the cache and away you go. I am hoping they will allow the kaiser/Tilt to have the Wayfinder 7 update soon. I will take a look at I-Guidance tho. There is a 5 day trial for Wayfinder also.
Garmin ! Garmin is the best
Garmin Mobile uses old maps. I got rid of it and used iGuidance instead.
iGuidance maps incomplete too

I have the new iGuidance v4 - its maps are far from perfect - a major I-25 freeway exit here in Denver is not recognized even though construction was completed more than 1 year ago! I emailed the company regarding this, and they essentially said "wait for next year's updated maps".
I have Garmin GPS units which all all very nice.
On the Tilt, I'm using TelNav which is also nice. It doesn't need any large memory area for map storage where the Garmin software does.
Drawback is you need to be within cell range to get the data (i.e. map, locations, best prices on gas (yes! Something Garmin lacks.), traffic info, route style, 2D or 3D maps, contacts from phone, etc.). They offer three versions: personal, business, and tracking services.
It's a bit cheaper to get it online from them rather than AT&T which is monthly. Online from TeleNav they give you 12 months for price of 10 (or used to be). They have a 30 day trial, but I decided I needed it quicker.
I like iGuidance a lot. I have a stand-alone Garmin and like it as well. Both companies use NavTec maps and rely on their updates for current map data. I'm not pleased with Garmin's current PPC software and won't buy it or anyone's that is locked to a specific memory card, that's BS. So I'm sticking with iGuidance for now. It's very stable on the kaiser, calls can be answered while navigating just be sure and use a BT headset to avoid juggling hardware on the road.
You can get a TMC receiver for a one off cost. After that it's free traffic info.
GPS Reviews
another good source for comparisons of gps software and hardware is PDA Essentials forum. They carry a periodical PDA Essentials and GPS Advisor which there forum is based on. It's worth a try for details on GPS questions.
I started playing around with CoPilot Live 7 yesterday. One of the reasons I bought this software is the free traffic updates you can get if you have internet access (GPRS/EDGE/WIFI) which I do.

Navigation Software. Your Opinion.

I want to get a navigation program for my diamond.
Now i am confused which one to get.
I heard that tom tom is old/out dated and slower
heard nothing about Route 66
And heard a view other names.
Please share your experiance and opinion about the navigation software you used.
And why!
Thank you!
Personally, I really like Copilot Live 7.
It's easy enough to use, does what it says on the tin and has quite a nice interface. I really like it.
I've loaded and have been using Garmin XT Mobile and love it.
well i think this is sufficient enough ?

[APP REQUEST] - GPS Tagging for Fishing spots

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and the touch pro for that matter. I'm an avid fisher in south georgia and am in need of an app to help me tag gps locations on some of the rivers and lakes around here. I have a Fish Finder on my boat but not a gps unit. Since my phone has the hardware built in, I figured I could save a few bucks and use it for the funcionality. I've searched the forums and google to no avail. Does anyone know of a program for winmo that is either dedicated to this or could be used to accomplish this. I guess something like google maps but with more focus on the lakes and rivers.
I know you guys will come through so thanks in advance.
-Brian
I agree
we need something that can be used like a hand held GPS and not just driving directions from Google Maps and AmazeGPS. Something that actually shows the coordinates where you are so you can set a marker to go back to that spot.
GREAT IDEA SIR.
Anyone know of some wares which can do this... Does not have to be free, but free is preferred!

Pretty sure this does what you need:
http://aeguerre.free.fr/Public/PocketPC/NoniGPSPlot/EN/index.php
NoniGPSPlot
It reminds of my old Garmin eTrex. And not the color one either, the original yellow waterproof one.
Sweet find, looks like it might be just what I need.
Installed, and will test it out on my next excursion.
On a side note, I also found a program called Run.GPS but it's a pay program, Anyone know if it is better. They state that it is made for many different sporting applications. Just wondering if it's worth the extra money over the free one listed by phobos512?
not working on HTC HD2
I downloaded the smartphone version but its still not working

[ALERT!] Premium Navigation subscriptions

Hi everyone,
I want to give out an alert to whomever thinks of buying subscriptions out of the upgrade section of the HTC Locations app.
The subscription "Traffic information" is NOT working. At least you expect traffic information to light up on the map, like Google Navigation does. But it doesn't the only thing that mentions something about traffic is the "Car Panel" settings. But thats only about when it should update the traffic info. Thus making traffic information totally useless.
Yet another expectation is that it should reroute your route to avoid traffic jams with this. It fails to do this either.
So my conclusion is you're buying vaporware here.
Support on this product is unbelievably bad. There is NO manual in the HTC Desire HD, Nor does Route 66 deliver instructions on how to use this crap piece of software that they call premium navigation.
HTC Support POV:
"Sorry, the locations app is build by a third party than HTC, namely Route 66. Please contact them for support on this.".
I can confirm this because whatever you buy from the locations app is processed and credited from Route 66.
So I went and call Route 66:
"Sorry, but the application is provided by HTC on your phone. We have nothing to do with this. The order you say is processed by us isn't ours. Please contact HTC for support on your purchase. *Hangs up phone*"
So Route 66 doesn't want to refund my purchase, in which they obviously got paid by me.
So my advice:
Don't buy anything from this scam!
Good to know... but isn't there some kind of trial option?
Nope, there isn't anything.
You just hand over your money, and they not even thank you for that....

I believe that there is a trial-period of 30 days.
Which country are you from, maybe they just don't have traffic coverage in your country? Haven't checked if it states for which countries it should work.
The trial only is for the navigation itself, but not for the extra services like traffic info and speed cameras.
Any of you tested that?

Why would you need to know info on the speed cams anyways? Wouldn't it be much easier to just follow the traffic rules like you're supposed to?

You don't want to get punished when you are in a traffic jam and are driving too slow. So when there's a speed cam, you take the emergency lane and pass the trafic jam with full speed.
Just a different interpretation of rules

When the month worldwide trial period is over, the only thing that changes is that you don't have spoken directions anymore. The maps and soundless navigation stays free.
OK confusing situation here...
I got my first DHD on the 18th October and activated the trial for navigation on that day.
I returned that phone to the store 1 week later (25th Oct) and had it replaced with a new handset.
Last Wednesday (10th Nov) I actually needed to use the premium navigation, so assuming I was still in my 30 days trial (which I was) I went to use it. It had to search for my license and it took a few seconds, but it activated fine.
I decided that I'd try out the speed cameras and traffic to see if it was any good. I couldn't buy the traffic as I just got a blank page, but I went and bought 30 days of speed cameras. However, nothing appeared to download to the phone. I carried on anyway.
However, the cameras were not displayed. When I went through some average speed areas, it would bring up a red bar indicating I was in a speed controlled area, but it gave no indication to speed, distance, or anything!
I figured it had just not downloaded it, but when I went to check, it said my licence for both the Navigation and Cameras was due to expire on October 12th (before I even got my first handset!)
The Navigation was still working, but I didn't think the cameras were.
It's totally bizarre.
Indeed today, if I look at the "Upgrade" menu in the Locations app, at the very top it says:
Navigation
Worldwide
Expires 12/10/2010
Safety Cameras
United Kingdom and Ireland
Expires 12/10/2010
What's going on?!
Are you sure it's not US dates, they put the month before the day, so that date would be December 12th.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Just checked mine, it says 12/9, so I'm sure it's month then day
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Ok that might make some kind of sense, and would seem to suggest that the 30 day trial is linked to IMEI rather than a particular account.
Can anyone confirm how safety cameras are working for them? Can you see them on the map? Do you get alerted before going through them?

Registering 30 day trial?
Anyone else having problems with the 30 day trial than me and few other finns?
When starting to use the Premium Navigation its checking for licence and the shows installed maps, voices etc.
But when returning to navigation software gives a menu where are options to Buy, use a coupon or syncing licence.
Ive tried many times to sync the licence but there is no change to the navigation and it asks to buy etc. all the time.
I think the problem is same with Desire HD and Z here in Finland?
Other finns to comment this?

Whats your favourite Navigation Software

I have tested a few, and my favourite is Navigon.
However, it is one of the most expensive applications, and I can not buy maps for Scandinavia alone, so I'm looking for a replacement.
Unfortunately Google's Navigation is not available in Norway.
Which do you prefer?
Please take my poll, and I appreciate additional information and tips if you have tested several navigation systems.
Thanks!
I prefer copilot as google navigation does not allow or let you save fav places which are not on the map say for instance I am looking for a shop not in the search result so I look on the map,pin it but cannot save it in say shops or eating places like you can in copilot.
Yeah, me too. Copilot is great.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
am using Copilot too and am pretty much happy about it!
I found Navigon to be a very good and "light-weight" navigation software. It's easy to use, gives great directions and has a clean layout. Still it could benifit from more options and customizations as it's really not that advanced.
CoPilot is a great application also, but I think it's interface is too cluttered.
Yesterday I read a review about Sygic Aura, and bought the Scandinavian version for 19,99EUR. This is by far my favourite of these three as it has a really nice UI, great (and I mean really great) graphichs and is really easy to use but still has a lot of advanced feautures.
I agree, sigyc Aura is greate. Easy to use and really grate grafics and UI.
im useing "waze", you can find it on the market.
Guys, don't you think CoPilot is a bit inaccurate when calculating travelling time though?
My commute into work takes 1 hour, always has, TomTom agrees with me, but CoPilot thinks it'll take 1.5 hours.... strange...
Sygic Aura doesn't give you the price. you only can download the free version. Don't like this. I want to know how much I'm going to pay if I buy it. Won't even try it.
I've got LOCATIONS, but for me the best is TOMTOM. I had it on my Kaiser, and with its so small screen I was able on one little glance to read all important elements (next way out, speed, etc..)
NDrive is good and has fairly up to date australian maps, Aura lacks maps for australia it seems which is unfortunate.
Brut maps all the way buddy. Google it
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Sygic Aura all the way! But I do miss my igo8 on wm6.5
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Nobody talks about LOCATIONS PREMIUM.
Interesting navigation, but missing a lot of options. Not expensive.
Missing :
- enter adress from contacts (as MAPS)
- enter GPS with the coordinates.
each time you want to configure you have to go back to locations. it means shut the navigation down and open LOCATION.
Otherwise, its very clear navigation. GPS is very precise (suppose it doesn't depend of the program)
hope we'll soon have a good update...

Sure you're living in a big country. In Switzerland you walk 2 steps and you are in roaming!!!
In CoPilot I miss the following funktions.
When they are fixed I think it will be the best Nav-app:
Foto-nav - When I get qa photo by mms or mail, it would be great to be able to navigate to it.
Navigate to contact - Now I cant click a contact in my phone-book and navigate to him/her. That sux!
