I am getting my kaiser tomorrow, and was wondering something. Why should i hack/flash it? I have an Ipod touch jailbroken, and really the only thing it allows me to do is get a few cool games for free and some utilities. That is about it.
I want to put some games on it, from some freepcmobile site. I want to use it for pictures and playing music.
So, should i even bother flashing it? What will that get me? That xda site is so in depth, there must be something I am missing.

Hmmm are you serious?
First, look here.....
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser#ROMx20.Upgrading
Secondly, hacking/flashing does several things for you...as you would have read within the first page of the wiki. Changing the rom allows you to remove the bloatware manufacturers load into the operating system. This therefore increases storage and memory for your device to operate on which makes the phone faster. Changing SPL ( the bootloader ) allows you to CID unlock your phone.... allowing you to use any carriers GSM card inside, as well as makes your phone more valuable for resale. If these things dont appeal to you, then by all means, stick with the manufacturer forums and keep your stock roms. If youre not familiar with flashing and the likes, or are worried about breaking ( bricking ) your Kaiser, then its best to leave well enough alone and keep all the bloatware ( factory installed advertisements / ect )
Hope this helps
I did not mean to sound like an idiot, because i know I get irritated when something I know so well, then someone asks such a noob question.
However, thank you for all of the info. A lot of forums, if i would post this question, people would just yell. I did check the xda website, and seeing there was so much info, i was not sure where to start.
I dont care about unlocking the phone, and as far as bloatware, i may go ahead and flash it and remove, but maybe not for a few weeks. I am going to get an 8GB card, or maybe try and find a 16GB card. They seem to be very hard to find.

I would leave it alone until you KNOW that you need/want to flash it.
You need to get to know what you like and don't like about the TILT. How does it currently work. The manufacturers give you a pretty good phone. If it had LOTS of problems they would not release it. So it will be stable.
The problem is that those of us who have flashed their phone got tired of the perceived slowness, or wanted it to work differently, or wanted to add a different interface... (ad nauseum) - this does not mean it is inherently "better" merely that it now works more like WE wanted it to work.
So - get your phone and have fun - and when you are TOTALLY convinced the that only thing that will make you happy is a new interface do your research - then do some more - READ all the WIKI's and STICKYs - you can "brick" your phone (make it unuseable) and if you simply post a note here that says help - I tried to flash my phone and it does not work you are likely to get yelled at if it is perceived that you simply did it without reading.
Hope this helps,
Bill
I don't think you should hack your phone.

I know this board is specifically for the XDA, but I was hoping you guys would be able to help me out. I own a Hitachi G1000 which is a PocketPC Phone Edition device that runs on Sprint PCS's CDMA network. I am wanting to upgrade it to 2003, but Hitachi and Sprint claim that they will never issue such an upgrade. I was hoping to use the 2003 ROMs that were released to upgrade the XDA, but I am concerned that it would not be compatable with the G1000 because of the CDMA radio, the camera built into the phone, and the hardware keyboard. What would I need to do to build a ROM that brings the Sprint utilitys and G1000 specific drivers into the new 2003 system, or is it even possible without assistance from Hitachi?
I think it would be very hard. most of the core part of the os
is very customized by HTC. I guess the same would hold for the g1000.
however, it would be possible to modify the romkitch/mkrom tools to create extended roms, based on your current rom version.
if these specs are correct
http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,18795&start=1
then it's not going to happen
because of the whole
32MB Flash EEPROM (Note: OS is not upgradeable or reflashable)
Darn it. I also have a Hitachi G1000, and was hoping to use the ROM upgrades. Not to PPC2003, but rather just the enhancements for PPC2002. I have read many places that the ROM is EPROM, but this article does make me wonder.
Checked Hitachi, it's EEPROM, darn it, darn it, darn it. Looks more and more like they weren't sure if the thing would sell, or even take in the market. Some of the things/specs seem quite a bit short sighted on Hitachi's and Sprint's part. I love the device, but as I look to upgrade, or expand it's abilities, I become more and more dissappointed.
I feel your pain
The lack of expansion and upgrade options for the Sprint System is why I am getting rid of them and Getting an XDA. I really liked my 2032sp but I wanted a bit more. I have gotten an XDA and upgraded it to 128mb of Ram, an 1800 Battery and I can use it on any GSM Network. Good luck in seeking upgrade paths.
Yeah, I'm not a big GSM/GPRS fan. I can atleast get bursts of 80-100k on the 1xRTT, Sprint uses. Went with the Hitachi for the faster proc and keyboard, too. Probably just have to wait for the next gen of them.

Hi,
Is it anybody here that tried to hardmod thier phone? With this is mean changing the hardware or adding hardware?
I will start to experiment with my HTC ELF as soon as I buy a new phone, just when im bored... would be fun to know if somebody done something similar to thier phone?
no
i cant figured out how to make it cause i dont have the diagram...
hardware changes??? how can we make it.... once i have a Blue angel and try to change the audio port... guess what.. i brick it.... some pads missing and many more burns...
But We have painted them... is fun see my pimped works on Blueangel and on wizard at my signature... PIMP MY WIZARD or PIMP MY BlueAngel
I added a Purple Led into my Hermes, to tell me when i have a text. If that counts... then i guess i "Hard Modded" My phone.
I have seen a fellow from India hard solder a RUIM slot and get it working on a CDMA titan and someone else soldered a full size SD slot on to their touch pro to take advantage of a 32gb sdhc card.
Sure people who are crazy hardmod their phones
I mean wouldn't be fun if everybody who hardmodded thier phone write exactly what they did so us "crazy" people that have a phone without use of it could try to mod it?
Maybe increasing RAM, adding LED lights whatever that makes the phone funnier!
I remember hardmodding my PSP so it had two joysticks! thats awsome

plus alot of brainwork, soldering and time!!
So this is what I think we can achieve, if people that done ANYTHING, and with that I've mean any hardmod, post it and let thoose who dare to try it! Would be alot fun and challenging!

Nice bro, just be carefull so you dont mess it up! I takes alot of time and testing.... I had three PSP devices, one old fat that I made the mod on and two slim ones in white and black.. So I didn't really care if the fat one broke.. I wish you good luck!
Sorry for going off topic, just got excited
When i get a new phone, I have plans to install a couple infared led's on my fuze for night veiwing. Ive wanted to hardwire the dongle it came with in it for a permanent 3.5mm jack. That shouldn't be hard to do.

However, I am planning to have it modified soon. I just need to find somebody who know how to do that-- someone that can be trusted

Is putting a MDA V into a diamond 2 housing "hard-modding"??
I did that, but consider that myself as a minor mod.
The people in the HTC Universal forums did a really impressive and cool hard-mod:
Adding RAM to their devices which made their 256 MB RAM into 512 MB..
Now that is a cool mod!

I've Seen This Somewhere...I Know It's Out There
Hate to tell you this but...you'll need to search awhile and do some homework.
By no means am I saying that this Forum won't help you...it most certainly will, I'm only saying that there are others with this experience and threads with resolutions.
Do a search on black screen, and look into Oli's 1.70.Olinex radio associated with it...I think you'll get on the right track.
If you find the path and get lost while on it, there are plenty of pthers that will help you get back on track...but there are alot of questions and only so much time.
Check out G.W.E.N.I. when you get the chance http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=383904
And MikeChannon's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=314615
And as far as time...all (okay most) of these guys and gals are pretty spread out on that as well.
Be proactive...get us (and therefore yourself) closer to defining the single point of the problem by doing as much as you can on your own.
Once you're absolutely certain you can go no further...come back here with what you've done and where you are.
Be patient...someone may and probably will answer your call.
I've seen very similar issues running around the Forum...I don't know the exact answer of the top of my head but I know I've seen it...I'd have to search as well to find it.
If I find out more I'll point you in that direction.
Good luck, hope some of that helped...at least some...

Well said.
I think I've narrowed it down for you...
Did a search on "black screen unlocker" and these are the VERY FEW threads that showed up.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=23554926
A couple are dead ends...sort of, for you anyway...but there's at least one that gets you SERIOUSLY on the right path...think it was Sim Lock by n3xt.
Follow his plight and where it took him...since it may not be EXACTLY what happened to you there are other threads it points to to keep you on YOUR path.
When...okay, my bad...IF you get stuck, provide us with info as in those examples and we can better help unstick you...you may find that you get this one sorted on your own tho
Also, you might want to go out and find the threads on getting you 'back to factory', try those, get it running again and start over...remember, the SIM and CID Unlocker is [OPTONAL]!
Otherwise, if you're game for it, keep on the path...I think you'll be fine.
Best I can do for now, I've still got my OWN issue with 'bad blocks' and a seemingly bricked Tilt @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=508100
I made a couple of pretty noob statements in that thread myself...even tho I've been following this Forum for 2½ years...so don't feel so bad
Well then, back in the box. Okay bye...

Thank you RAF!

You may also want to try asking this question in mskips thread on flashing for noobs. Not sure what happened during your flash, but it definetly sounds like you may have missed a step in the process.
Good Luck
Just find your original rom in the wiki and reflash that. After that put your phone in bootloader and see where you are at in the unlocking process.
either flash ur original radio, or flash a 6.1 rom
Or you can flash dance

Try holding down the camera button and then hold in the soft reset button. Does the tricolour screen come up? If so does it say anything at the top of it Like SPL-1.0 OliPof? If it does at least it means the SPL is loaded, if that is the case dl the stock ROM for your supplier i.e. AT&T, T-Mobile etc.
Rename the ROM (Large file) KAISIMG and put it onto your SD card, do the step above to get it into the Tricolour screen again and it should try and reinstall the stock ROM, if it does follow the on screen instructions.
This may work, Im kinda a newbie at this and only had my Kaiser for 2 weeks, but I have flashed the ROM like 20x to get one I like.
The main reason Im saying use your suppliers Stock ROM is if its still locked then using that one may fix the prob, then run the Sim unlocker.

I am wondering how you take out the old keyboard and put this one in (above).
Reason i ask, i ordered the one below, but some keys are falling off and i might just have to send it back, if the seller ever gets back to me. If not ill go the mean route.
By using the search function you would have found this info.
Ive searched for many things, and yes, search works and google is my best friend, but honestly, i have found nothing about replacing that first version of the keyboard. Even the manuals i have downloaded dont give any clues. Sure, the second one, which i got to replace ours, shows in the manual how to take the phone apart and replace that version, but i cant seem to find anything on replacing just the pad. And looking at these keyboards i have, from the bottom i see no way to push the keyboard out and slap in a new one. It makes me think the first type on the top of the OP just pops out and the new one would just pop back in
Another few hours of reading and searching and still nothing about how that first keyboard is installed. I guess i will just have to wreck one of these new ones to see how its held in there.
this is all there is.
http://www.mikechannon.net/page1.html
ive already found those, during my numerous searches, and they dont show how to remove the keyboard and replace it with the first one in my OP.
So much for the SEARCH, eh???
The search didn't come up with something? ah then it worked, if it's not there then it probley isn't there. Stop crying.

Don't let them get you down! Keep looking and keep asking! I guarantee non of them woke up one morning suddenly an expert. Somebody helped them.
If it is like the other phones I have disassembled. The keys are just an overlay. Almost like a sticker. Most new ones come on a plastic backing that gets pealed off. Just be careful think out your steps and work methodically, and it never hurts to have a unit to practice on.
Document your steps and photograph everything and you can write a How-To to help the others.
Good Luck!

With all honesty you didn't really describe what you wanted that well in the original post. So from my perspective you wanted to know how to remove the keyboard, which was found by searching. Your second post described it in better detail..

Hi to all i was just wondering if it is illegal to mod other peoples phone because i am in school and i mod peoples phone you know give them root and change boot img (like the T-mobile G1/My Touch 3G) and my dad thinks its illegal and want me to stop he also thinks that some one is going to connect it to a bomb and blame me i just want to get some other peoples views and such thanks for you feed back!-)
I'm pretty sure the "modding G1 and giving them root" police are only in Oregon, so you should be ok. Although I hear they are expanding their field offices to include Fargo, ND and North Grovesnerdale, CT so be on the lookout if you are near those areas.
In all serious, I think you are fine.....

**** good lookin out. I don't want to go to jail... haha
Ahahhhahahahaahahahahahahhahahahhahahaahahahahahhaahha! Ok, now that I got that out of my system. It is not illegal to mod an electronic device. When it becomes illegal is when you mod the device to do illegal actions, like play burnt copies of video games, or run illegal version of operating systems, etc. With that said, modding your g1/mt3g is just fine. As long as your not modding the phone to be a detonator for a nuclear bomb, your fine. Be sure to issue a disclaimer before modding anyone's phone. You don't want anyone coming back to your demanding money for a bricked phone. Just let them know that your trained in what you do, but there is still no guarantee that everything will go as planned. I've modded a couple of peoples g1's and I had them reply to an email with my personal disclaimer. Just as a back up...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUPER FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but seriously...when I was younger I ALWAYS questioned if my actions hack/mod wise were legal......
fyi, it's now only illegal to load an old cyanogen mod with the proprietary google apps (for now, who knows what the future will bring legislation wise) .....according to google.....and probably their power lawyers.
While we are on the subject of legallity?

just keep clear of any suspicious activities.... if someone asks for your help in making something that goes boom...its more than likely an fbi agent
It's not illegal unless you distribute copyrighted software. If you are simply rooting the phone you are fine, but if you have to downgrade it you are technically redistributing software without a license to do so. Either way I wouldn't worry about them coming to knock on your door for flashing a few kids phones.
On another note. Although it may make you the cool guy in class who can mod phones, I would advise you tell them to learn on their own. Otherwise you will end up being tech support for countless idiots who don't know what to do with root. Do you really feel like spending hours walking people through a Hero rom install, or SD partitioning? Cause that's what you are asking for by doing so.
The whole point of performing such mods is for the learning experience, and expanding the capabilities of your device for personal enjoyment. It's not so people can say "look what I can do" or "my phone is cooler than yours". My opinion is: If you won't put forth the effort to read and learn how, you don't need it.
You probably spent a good bit of time learning what you have. I know it feels great to be able to show off those skills, but in the long run they will thank you for making them learn rather than doing it for them.
