Hi
I'm having difficulty downloading google maps from the web page m.google.com/maps.
On that page, it doesn't offer the download, and just links the pages where you can search maps through the browser.
Is this some limitation from Orange?

Thanks. I found the problem was with Opera, I don't know why.
It downloads correctly with PIE.
Unfortunately the link you give doesn't work but you anyone else can get the cab from here

its because Opera 'tricks' the site into thinking its a desktop computer so that you get the full site and not some crappy wap or mobile version. In the old Opera Mobile you used to be able to switch profiles from desktop to mobile but I don't see this option anymore....most annoying that these sites don't just give you the opportunity to download the cab to your desktop because
then this problem wouldn't occur.
I thought as much.
To be honest, I would prefer to see the mobile version of a site first and then have the option of seeing the desktop version. Generally when reading web sites on the phone you want to get to information as quick as possible.
OPera on the touch does give you an option for a "mobile view" of web pages - ebnable it under "settings - display"
yes but that only changes the screen layout
Unfortunately Google Map isn't available for my region Hong Kong, the nearest location is Taiwan. So sad, I would love to try it out on my Diamond. Although I do have MapKing2007 installed on my device but google Map seems to be a better alternative.
Anybody can help? Appreciate it!
I read on another thread that you can spoof the user agent by opening opera:config.
I tried changing the custom user agent under user preferences to IE, but no luck.
Gotta love it. Hulu on my Fuze, I don't think I'll ever get anything done. , it doesn't seem like the actual page resolution that skyfire downloads has changed though which sucks. but the menus etc. now completely function in both landscape and portrait.
Cheers,
Migsims
** EDIT ** Some people running the stock rom seem to be having issues installing this. I currently have - PROven ROM 1.03 20757 HD build - flashed on my Fuze and Skyfire is working great installed on my storage card. I'm not sure what the issue is.

Version 0.85 of the Skyfire mobile browser is now available.
To get the latest version of Skyfire, point your phone's standard browser to http://get.skyfire.com and download the newest client. The site will detect the device and provide the appropriate installer.
Please note: if you are a current Symbian user you must uninstall the existing client on your phone first.
Release notes follow.
Skyfire 0.8.5 Release Notes
Released: November 21, 2008
Skyfire brings the PC internet experience to your mobile. Watch videos on YouTube or Hulu, connect with your friends on Myspace or Facebook, shop on Amazon, or listen to music. If you can experience it on your computer, you now can do it with Skyfire on the go.
Skyfire is fast, easy to use and available for free for many smart phone models.
Skyfire 0.8.5 Beta adds (standard) VGA support for Windows Mobile devices and brings the feature set for our Symbian client in line with Windows Mobile. Skyfire will continue to maintain both platforms in future releases.
We greatly appreciate your participation in our beta community. Your support and feedback on the forums at http://support.skyfire.com/forums/ helps us to constantly improve the product.
What’s new in 0.8.5 for both Windows Mobile and Symbian:
* Simple Download: This is big for us and we hope for you as well. Now, there is NO requirement anymore to register in order to download, access, and use Skyfire. With this release, downloading is as simple as pointing your existing mobile browser to http://get.skyfire.com. We detect the device and provide the installer for your phone.
* Optional Registration: Once downloaded and installed, you can use Skyfire right away. Browse away, create bookmarks, and check your history. Everything will work.
Why create an account? So you can retain Bookmarks and History in case you lose your phone or have to switch phones. Furthermore you can post and participate in the Skyfire user forums.
Already have an account? You can still access your existing account by simply logging in on your device. Or, create a new account. Or, migrate your account between phones. It’s now all done from your phone on the Skyfire start page.
* New UK Data Center: We are looking forward to providing better service for our UK based users and are currently building out a new data center. If you are in the UK you should automatically connect to the new data center and experience better performance. If you are not based in UK, then you will automatically connect to the US data center. Please bear with us as we work out some of the kinks – especially with account migration.
* Overall Improvements: Client and Server robustness, streaming performance, recovering from lost connections.
* Improved rendering of mobile pages: We better detect and render more mobile pages. The list continues to expand.
* Updated Skyfire User Portal: We continue to evolve our user portal and start page. Although some of it was already visible before 0.8.5, it is worth mentioning:
o Google Search & Search Results: It’s the best and the most used.
o Updated weather widget: Now supports Canada and UK postal codes, in addition to US.
o Region specific start page: Custom feeds and pre-populated bookmarks for US and UK.
What’s new in Windows Mobile 0.8.5 since Windows Mobile 0.8?
* Standard VGA support: We are excited to now provide VGA support for the number of new devices that recently entered the market, including the HTC Touch Diamond, Diamond Pro, HTC/ATT Fuze. Please note that we support Standard VGA support (e.g. 640x480). Widescreen WVGA (e.g. 800x480 etc) is NOT supported yet.

Didn't work for me ...
I dowloaded the cab from the 'get' link and when I tried to install it I got an error stating that "...The installation file is not intended for this device."
I used Skyfire on Tilt all the time so I was hoping it wouldn't be a problem on the Fuze. Must be doing something wrong ... ?

It's working fine on my Fuze, dunno what's up there. What version did you download?
It worked for me too. When I went to that website it said my device was a TouchDual, but it still worked and landscape works fine with our keyboard too.
I too got the same error. The link automatically sets version 7.9x. Maybe they will get it worked out. Also the user control has been moved to the mobile browser. And since some of use have moved on to the fuze we can't access the control panel to say change device.

The link defaulted to "Skyfire_7927-PPC50". There was no option to choose anything else. I not only tried the link from my phone but also got the same file when using the laptop.
I'll keep watching to see what might be the problem.

That's exactly the one I downloaded and installed and it's working fine, that's kind of strange.
i'd recommend just downloading the cab and copying it to your device if you're having problems

Did that and got same results, meaning "Unsuccessful" message.
*EDIT: Worked this time. Must have been me on the transfer from laptop. Got it working now, so thank you for the recommendation to try again.
copy it to my device, installed and had to soft reset to get it working. But it works very well. Now I have 3 browsers to choose from What is the down side to SkyFire?? Seems to do everything.
On the ATT Fuze I went to the site, it said I have an HTC phone so I click to download it didn't work. But if I selected This is not my phone, then went to WinMo 5 or 6 Touch it worked flawlessly :-D
i did the above and it worked, problem is the browser looks blurry... like a scaled up version of the qvga version... when it loads a page and th site takes up the screen you cant read any of te small text... opera is nice and crisp and clear...
ill try the other installation way when i get to my home computer to see what works there. I looked around in the settings but nothing is there as far as adjusting resolution or anything.

i think all they did was make the menus and stuff vga for now and hopefully soon they will actually make the whole thing fully vga
hmm, that could be it... the address bar and stuff are all crisp and vga-ish...
can some more people who have this running give more feedback on this...
oh, and is there tabbed browsing on this browser at all? I cant seem to find it. for a browser that claims to do EVERYTHING, thats the one thing I am really looking for!

Its is def not as sharp as the Opera browser. I also noticed its alot slower now then in the locked betas :-( I guess because the server load is growing but I used to watch streaming video all the time.
yeah the problem is that any flash is streamed and compressed on their servers ala opera mobile.
It would be really nice if adobe finally got off their ass and made an updated full plugin on not this flash lite crap.
Well if definitely does not look as nice as Opera....and is there a way to make this work with TouchFlo3D?
Yeah, I had to download it, transfer it to my storage card then install it without issues.
I still get the half screen issues that I had with previous versions.
For those of you who haven't fallen of your chair reading the title ....
What I'm trying to do is use LogMeIn on an Android phone, have tried the native browser, Opera and Steel, all let me log into the the remote PC but on connection a blank screen is displayed. I have read that you can switch to html to view but I havent got this to work. Having used LMI with html from a PC, I found it very slow, so I would prefer to avoid this route. What does PIE have that Android browsers are missing? Is it ActiveX or Java?
I ask just so that I keep an eye out for a suitable android browser when released. Apparently LMI are working on an app for the iphone and possibly Android but an interim solution would be great.
Cheers
I was wondering the same thing. I use remotely anywhere and it has a nice activeX control which is way faster than Java or html.

I have both DocumentsToGo, and QuickOffice on my G-Tab. DocsToGo will let you open a Word Doc, but when you go to edit, it opens a new edit dialog with the previous sentence (at most) visible. It does not seem to allow you to edit many formatting options, and I can't see any way to use it to insert an image file into a document. QuickOffice lets you edit inline, but otherwise seems to have the same limitations.
Is there a "complete" word processing program for the G-Tab that will let me do some formatting and insert pictures, as well as produce a .DOC or .DOCX compatible file?
Is there some way to setup Google Docs like this, and have it be available if I don't have a connection (maybe through dropbox)?
TIA!
I'm using the QuickOffice HD from the Notion Ink Adam and it works great!
It's available via this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928832
Right now, the current version lets you connect to Google Docs and both edit AND create new documents (Word, Excel, PPT) as well as read PDFs
You could easily open a document up and re-save it internal to your gTablet for offline use -- or as you suggest use Dropbox to keep a local folder synced up for offline use...
Google only recently added support for the XML office files to GDocs -- so creation of new documents in those formats isn't natively supported in this version (but may be available in a newer version of QuickOffice HD I suppose)
Long Pressing in a Word document brings up a dialog with the following options:
- Add Image from Gallery
- Add Image from Camera
- Select Text
- Input Method
You can also change Fonts (inc. set Bold, Underline, Italic, etc), Alignment, Colour...
I think that just about meets your requirements (?) -- give it a try...
+1 for quickoffice tablet addition from notion ink. Works great for me!
OK, have given it a try. To begin with, I feel a little odd using it since I can't find the HD version in the market, so have to wonder if it won't up and die on me at some point.
In any event, I was able to insert and resize a picture, but couldn't find any way to select just the picture so I could try to center it. Selection handles seem a bit difficult to operate. Also could not find any way to edit my headers or footers, or to apply my document styles for chapter hearings.
Tool may support all this, but the online help isn't the greatest either. Half tempted to register and see if there have been any updates.
FWIW
The HD version is great. Use it for my college classes and I love it. Have the USB case and this and ur good to go. Being integrated with google docs and dropbox is a nice feature too

I just side loaded the Notion Ink Quick Office app, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to create a document. Am I supposed to create a Google Docs account or something? Or should I just be able to create a document on my G tab?

I think you click the app (e.g., word), then select SDCARD, then press the small + at the bottom, which will popup file or folder choice.
Jim
Got it, thanks. Very cool!
Wow i must say the Quickoffice HD is way better than my DocstoGo full at this moment. Wasted my money on Docstogo...
I like the ported canvas app as well.
This seems to be much better than doctogo.
It asked about registering it do I need to?
Nope it's optional.

This is problem that seems continuous to all my android devices (evo 3d, galaxy s2, and touchpad with schizoid) and I was wondering if anyone had a solution:
Is there any way to open up pdf files that are embedded in frames? Thanks
I have tried multiple browsers (chrome, dolphin, integrated android one) with no success.

I've never used schizoid only AOSP, but when I click on a link with a pdf file it's downloaded, then I use an Adobe reader to read them.
Hope this helps.
It is only terrible websites that have PDF files in frames. like this:
ugh unable to post link to it: if one searches on google "pdf in frame" it is the first link.
I wouldn't care about 1990's web design except one website I really need access to won't load!
Thanks!

I see what you mean, ugh.
Maybe this link will help : http://drupal.org/node/
From the little I read, it seems Firefox has a plug in for this. Take a look at it, maybe that will be your solution.
Good luck.

Displaying PDF in frame
Posted by steve22 on September 20, 2006 at 5:21pm
I have all the pdf files in one folder www.mysite.com/images/ . Is it possible that via some php script whenever user access those pdf files either directly or through google, it is opened inside a frame (with my website's logo, menu etc as the top banner above the pdf) instead of opening directly as pdf file?

Opening PDFs inside browsers
Posted by styro on September 20, 2006 at 8:43pm
is a browser plugin thing at the client, the webmaster can't control that. Some PDF readers or OSes don't include browser plugins for PDFs, and always handle PDFs as downloads. Some paranoid users (after all Acrobat Reader has some security issues apparently) might switch off PDF browser plugins.
As for opening in a frame, you couldn't do that with a link directly to the PDF (eg public downloads). With private downloads you might be able to add to the system (?) module to change the download pages to use frames somehow - but IMO it would be a lot of pain for very little (if any) benefit.

With Firefox on Android you can install the PDF Viewer as an addon. This is the viewer that now ships with the desktop version. I've used it before to view PDFs in the browser, its not as smooth as Adobe, but will probably work for you:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/pdfjs/
