Guys I've been thinking about these two for a while now, and i can't decide on which to buy. They both are very alike.. which do you guys prefer? I really dont care too much for the RCA compatibility feature much.. I really like both phones styles though, the Xperia even looks a bit more flashy. Should I go ahead and buy the Touch Pro with the shorter wait? or should i wait for the Xperia with the longer wait? help me out guys, any input appreciated

SE Xperia X1
My wife is waiting for the Xperia. I think it will be well worth the wait!!!
It's impossible to judge the Xperia right now, it might be an amazing phone, or it might be a really dissapointing fudge of what's already available in the Touch Pro. If the TP doesn't make you want to run out and buy it now, I'd just wait and see, the price is only going to go down in the meantime. If the X1 turns out to be the second coming in mobile form, then you know what to do! If it doesn't, then you'll probably still have saved a little money on the TP, or possibly have something else more interesting on the horizon.
For me, the Touch Pro is nice but not a big enough upgrade from my Kaiser, and the X1 is just more of the same. I'm quite sure they'd both bore me within months, so I'm going to go for something completely different this time around (an Iphone) while keeping the trusty Kaiser in reserve.
Perhaps WM7, and some of the more impressive processors on the horizon, will tempt me back next year. For now, going from one Qualcomm powered HTC to another (in the shape of either the Touch Pro or the Xperia) just doesn't appeal.
does anyone know how good the camera is as far as fps for video capture or how quick the touchpro locks on gps?
I already don't like the surface buttons for the Xperia...imo.
Also the ui buttons are too plain. If I had the Xperia I'd look into skinning asap.
HTC TyTN III is the HTC Touch Pro
Did they actually make the screen smaller on the TP II
I don't think so
I think Touch series is different
There will be a TyTN III, but it's not TP
Just my opinion
TyTN III will tilt, will have more H/W buttons as the TyTN II and hopefully will have all TP's good stuff
Didn't even hear anything abt it or read abt it
Just my two cents

I'm getting the Touch Pro when it becomes available on AT&T. I just can't stand any of Sony's phones... such a goofy looking interface.
Anyone know how much AT&T are going to do them for?

The Tilt was $299 at launch, so I would guess the Touch Pro would be close to that.

Bought Tilt at release for $150 (brand new) with contract. They had a 3day sale or something like that.. additional 50% off.
I'd recommend people to wait for something similar for TP, or ask AT&T about that sale.
when alltheway says touchpro IS the tytn3 it means TP IS THE TYTN3..he knows lol... its been a year since it was released and thats how HTC does it..every year new model in that line... HTC just realized that the tilting aspect just wasnt worth it and dropped the idea. Seriously its a business class phone...people using this for their business arent after the tilting they are after funcionality so HTC made the touch pro as the tytn2's predecessor period
Well, I agree with you that ATW knows what he says
But, the tilting idea cannot be given up.
Well, no one can say that for sure but let's wait and see..
IMO, not a TyTN III
TyTN series (TyTN,TyTN II) never had flushed screens
Only Touch series has that (Touch, Cruise, Dual, Diamond, Pro)
Plus, TyTNs have always had alot of H/W button and that would've been one big essence lack if TP was the *TyTN III*
Let's just hope TyTN III comes next year
I hope I am right cause I absolutely loved the tilting screen

I can't get over to a phone shop to check right now, but could someone let me know whether the buttons on the UK T-Mobile Vario III variant of the Kaiser are flat or contoured?
Even T-Mobile's own website seems confused, with most photos showing the standard:

but others showing a nasty flattened version which would be more difficult to operate by touch (as I do my current phone):
So which version is accurate? With a bit of luck I'll be leaving my trusty old Vario (Wizard) behind and moving in with you all in this forum tomorrow.
What else should I know, I wonder? I'm sure I'll get into ROM upgrading soon - which actually looks easier than with my older phone from the FAQ here.
Thanks for anyone's help.
Andre
mine are flat. The lower picture is correct.
dunno about the UK, but t-mob Holland gives you the flattend version. I quite like it though..
but before you run off to the shop to get a Vario3 aka Kaiser, i suggest you do some more reading at the forum about the driver issue's.
The buttons for the Vario III are flat.
However, you could always get the regular Kaiser/TyTN II buttons from here:

Darn, WTF would they want to do that?!
I assumed that the 'flat' pictures were of some sort of pre-production prototye, as most of the T-Mobile website shows the normal buttons. I wonder if the buttons can be replaced with the standard arrangement of buttons that everyone else has?
[Edit: thanks for the info Teppic. I have read about the video driver issues, but I assume it will still be a lot faster than my current Vario, until someone gets the problems sorted out?]
Andre
your assumption on your old Vario being slower is somewhat, lets say ..wrongish
i have a Vario, Universal and a Vario3, can't say the Vario3 wins anywhere on performance.

Oh. So they really have b*ggered the Kaiser up big time then?
My current Vario will play video (ish), but without a decent network speed that's a kinda moot point. I assumed that the more than double clock speed would make enough difference to improve matters even without optimised drivers.

The simple answer is
On "paper" the Vario III is superior to its predecessors
In practice "HTC" didnt do a good job on the software side, and poor video performance (drivers) impacts all aspects of the phone, from camera to open/close screen changes.
At this stage, given HTC's statement on them not supplying new drivers/software and the fact they now want to state that hardware that they quoted in press releases as being in the phone are now not present and "may be" in future products.
I would not upgrade to any HTC products, keep your Vario, stay on the same contract etc until you see a phone you like (but avoid HTC)

I did decide to go for the Vario III in the end, and it's not too bad in general performance terms (at least as good as my original Vario I guess, although of course it should be a lot faster, but hey).
I took a look at the link you suggested though, and although it states that this part is for the TyTn II, the button layout in the photo is different (the red and green phone buttons are at the bottom of the keypad rather than the top for example). I'd still like to put on the original contoured buttons rather than the flat T-Mobile ones, but not sure whether this part is correct...?
(I assume that fitting it will be easy enough - it looks like four screws on the back of the sliding front section should allow the whole of the silver bezel to be removed?)
Andre
I never noticed that the call and end call buttons were inverted on that replacement keypad!
I've just done a Google search and every replacement keypad I've seen seems to be the same.
You could always try these guys to see if they can supply you with the correct one: http://www.apexlaptops.co.uk/. They are based in Kent. (I will admit though that I've never tried them, but I was looking for somewhere that would repair the USB port on my eBay purchased phone before I managed to fix the bent pin on it myself).
Give them a call to see if they can help out. The worst they can do is say "no".
Thanks, I might give them a call as their website is a bit out of date and doesn't mention the recent handsets. I might also email that US supplier and ask if they've maybe used a photo of the wrong keypad?
Do you know if fitting is simple, or is it a pain to get the cover off & then catch a whole load of little springs which bounce everywhere...
Andre
The UK O2 version (XDA Stellar) has contoured buttons, as does (I believe) the Vodafone (v1615)
Find the video and images here.
Looks neat... unfortunately the battery has been removed and therefore you can only see the hardware.
Apparently the back is not as glossy as with the Touch Diamond. Definitely a tribute for addressing business people...

No way!
Grrr. I wish HTC hadn't come up with this thing and just left it at the Diamond. Makes my life so hard.
On the one hand, it has slightly better stats. Little more RAM/ROM... but... I'm coming from a 64MB RAM device anyway and it looks like custom ROMs are on the way to giving us more than enough free RAM on the Diamond.
There's the 50% bigger battery... but... there'll be bigger batteries for the Diamond, and more and more power issues are being resolved each day.
There's the keyboard which looks tons better than on my Hermes... but... I barely use it more than 5 mins a day, and I'm sick of such a fat device and the Diamond is oh so slim and sexy. But then, even the Pro is slimmer than my Hermes.
The camera has a flash... but... it's not a proper flash anyway and I don't take a great deal of photos where it would help anyway.
There's the useful MicroSD slot... but... I barely use all of the 1GB card in my Hermes.
It's coming later than the Compact IV... but... not so much later that it wouldn't be worth waiting for.
It's just not fair, too many choices!
EDIT: And now it looks like it might be coming about the same time the Compact IV is released? AARRGHH!!
And a next review:

well, folks. support for "HTC video out" is present in the registry if you look. I see no reason why video out is not an option for Diamond owners. you would need HTC video out cable of course.

My current phone is 1,4mm thinker than the PRO... so I should be fine... although it looks quite bulky right next to the Diamond. But who cares if you get flash, battery, mircoSD slot, more ROM/RAM and a keyboard with it...
And maybe it comes earlier than expected
BTW: I fully support the request for a HTC Touch PRO ROM-developement sub-forum. General and accessories could be merged to a PRO/Diamond forum since everything is so similar.
Here is one comparison shot taken from phonescoop.com.
I took the side area of the Touch Diamond placed it over the Touch Pro (red area). Doing this gives a good impression how much more thickness the Pro adds to the Diamond layout. It actually does not appear that bulky anymore... I guess the Diamond simply is that slim
Update:
I took a better photo from ppcw.net - looks cleaner now...
OK.
So I've been trying to decide which phone to buy for a few months and it has finally come to a head because my Cingular 2125 (Faraday) has finally broken and I'm stuck with using my incredibly old SPV C500 from the UK (aka HTC Typhoon).
Which is best? Tilt, centro or duo?
My concerns with the tilt are the size of the thing and also the tilting mechanism. It just seems a bit flimsy to me and I'm going to want it to last for 2 years.
Recommendations anyone?
ROFL!!!! OMG Ouch my Side. Ow Ow Ow. Pantech Duo.... LOL!
As for the Tilt, I'm going on 9 months and my Tilt is still as strong as when I got it. I also made it tighter by getting a Hard Case from Sedio.
But if you really want I pretty looking Palm device. You could buy the Centrino.
pollock, my wife has/had the Pantech Duo. THEY SUCK! She absolutely hates it. She hates it so much that she is willing to pay the $175 contract cancellation fee just so she can get a new phone. That's pretty bad. I have no input on the Centro. My Tilt is freakin' awesome. I want the Touch Pro myself but the Tilt is by far, hands down, without a doubt, second to none the very best phone I've ever had! Bar none.
scratch the pantech duo...I have both the centro and the tilt and if you don't mind the video problems then i suggest the tilt...
I agree with what's said above...the Pantech Duo blows!!! My wife also has one, and although she sounds fine when I talk to her on my tilt....the few times I've talked on her Duo the person on the other end of line sounds like they are in a barrel or something. Very hollow-sounding crappy speaker.
The Tilt is the 3rd WinMo phone I've owned and it's the best to date. I use the gps at least once a week (TomTom has never steered me wrong), the camera is pretty good for pics (it's replaced my Sony 3.2mp and my Kodak 5mp cameras)...however video is very sluggish and choppy in low-light situations, Audiomanager works pretty good to stream music over bluetooth to my Pioneer headunit in the Xterra.
I must say, you pretty much have to be willing to do a lot of reading about how to hack/reprogram a WinMo phone in order to be happy with it. They are all extremely buggy and need attention. For example, I can flash a new rom and set everything up....have it running great for a few weeks to a month, then out of the blue things start to crash and not work anymore. You just have to be willing to mess with it a lot. It almost becomes a hobby flashing roms and reconfiguring your WinMo phone.
With that being said, I'm still very happy with it and all the functions it can perform. I also want the HTC Touch Pro. In my opinion you should wait for it. Faster, better interface, video output, and supplied working video drivers.
I heard a rumor it's coming to ATT this fall? (fingers crossed)
I had Centro before Tilt and I can safely say that Centro's battery life is very crappy. Keyboard keys are very tiny for many users, they weren't for me tho. Only thing I missed about Centro was threaded SMS and it has been solved since WM 6.1.
Centro doesn't have any Wifi or GPS either.
The other 2 phones don't even compare.. And how does the tilt seem flimsy, mine works just was good as the day I bought it in Oct.
I just got back from Vacation with my Tilt and I think I will write a review of how it performed in Vegas. You will see, oh yes you will see.

Thanks for all your replies thus far.
As for feeling flimsy, I don't know, I just felt like the tilting mechanism was not very strong and I was worried that it would break.
I have searched the net quite extensively though and have not read any reports of that happening so if y'all are finding it reliable then I won't worry about that aspect of it.
I'm glad I could make so many people so happy with the suggestion of a Pantech Duo... a little laughter does a body good!
So how many people think I should hold out for a touch pro?
The pantech is a toy compared to the power of a fully operational tilt.
Also, did you actually mess with a Tilt or a dummy?
I had a tilt for a few days... had fun doing some mods, enjoyed walking around with the GPS showing me where I was so I didn't have to look at the street in front of me
A phone for me is a huge decision, I only buy one every 2-3 years and I use it more than I use virtually anything else so I want to make sure I get the right one.
I have had HTC phones for the past 6 years and they have never let me down so...
the centro isnt a 3g phone and its a joke on the internet.. also have you ever seen the keyboards on those its unusable to me its so small.. the pantech duo has call quality issues amoung other things pantech doesnt make good regular phones but they just want to jump in the pda arena with the big dogs and try to make a splash.. they are garbage.. BTW i keep up on the phones i work for ATT and we dont sell a phone that compares to the tilt/kaiser.. maybe the 3g iphone in an aesthetic sense..looks nice doesnt perform anywhere near the tilt/kaiser
Thanks Carpenter.
Working for AT&T, have you heard anything about the Touch Pro?
AT&T does not tell their employees anything, I keep calling reps asking for the release of 6.1 and all of them complain AT&T doesn't tell them. So if Carpenter knows something about the Touch Pro, he or she must have googled it. AND YES THE TILT IS BY FAR THE BEST PHONE.
hes right.. lol
Well guys, thanks for all the advice.
I really want to go for a tilt and have been holding out for walmart to bring their expanded inventory of stock back online in the hope that they will carry it again (Walmart are by far the cheapest place I've found for upgrades).
It looks like they are no longer carrying the tilt though. They previously had it for $199 with no rebates and no data plan requirements.
I am therefore going to have to go for the centro which walmart are doing for the princely sum of $0.00 for upgrades in my area. Even if it is only half as good as the tilt, it has to be a bargain when it costs nothing at all!
I hope I'm not too disappointed with it!

What will be the successor to this bit of kit most of us have had knocking around for about a year or so now? I'm looking for something similar - ie 'proper' keyboard, good screen, 3g, satnav, cam, and whatever is new and sexy!
I am struggling to think that there i will be a better form factor - but ya never know!

One of two in my opinion:
HTC HD as mentioned above, or Sony-Ericsson Xperia X1. Both have hardware keyboards and WVGA screens. Samsung Omnia is pretty good bang for your buck too, pity it doesn't have a hw keyboard. Nokia's new N96 is interesting, but I would never move away from WinMob, besides, where would you find support like here at XDA?

my only real problems with my kaiser is viability in sunlight my boss laughs at me when he sees me running for shade so i can see whats on my screen, and the material the phone is made out of imo they should have made the entire phone out of the scratch resistant material the back is made out of.
If they were able to make a phone that fixes both of those problems I'd be happy to replace my kaiser with it.

If hes anything like me, he changes phones about every 2-3 months. I just get board with them and want something new or the latest, even if its a downgrade.
I know this is a lot of pictures and I "think" these reflect my cell evolution since the 90's I'm missing a whole bunch of them...when I worked for Verizon, they will give me every single new phone to demo it
