Hi... simple question.
The compact IV is the phone I have been waiting for...however I have tried the phone once in the store, and hearing all the news about sluggish interface. How true is it? Im on Vario II at momemt with WM 6.1 installed. Much difference in freezing/slowness? Wonder anything you could do to speed up the interface?
Thanks... love to hear before I buy it!
to speed it up there are loads of tweaks. I just flash to another rom which saves me doing them. However stock rom is sluggish
I Agree,
I have compared my t-mobile with a Htc rom and I noticed a big diverence.
I had two devices with a clean install.
Now i flashed My MDA with a Htc rom and its great.
I work for t-mobile and can safely say that t-mobile always ruin good phones with crappy software.
Buy it but flash it with one of the better roms....dont forget to update the radio, the stock t-mob radio is awful.
I love my compact 4 now, much prefer it looks wise to the diamond too
[I was worried too after hearing about it being slow, I got one and its fast enough with the stock rom and no tweaks IMO, so you can get one and wait until you are brave enough to flash the rom like me..
One thing that can make touchflo seem slower is not using a definite touch, I use a firm fingernail rather than the pad of a finger. Of course keep as much memory free as possible by closing apps etc..
The only real slowness problem I have so far is the rotation in Opera, slight movements of the phone cause it to rotate and take ages to render - very annoying if you last were looking at opera and then you take your phone out to make a call and have to wait for Opera to untangle it's knickers before you can get to any other screen.
I will still probably ditch touchflo as its just inefficient compare to how i'm used to having my homescreen set up - my last phone was a vario II (flashed to a black satin rom).
Browsing the web is much MUCH faster!

What ROM do you suggest for best results and extending battery life. Do you know if T-Mobile honour phone warranties which have updated ROMs?

T mobil will not accept phones with updated roms. Thankfully people have put stock roms up here so that wont be a problm should you wish to return. Just update it back with the Stock rom and spl

hi there,
Im currently a wizard user and i love it, only 2 drawbacks are Lack of GPS and a slow processor. Ive been reading up alot on the tilt lately and heres what i found...
1 - the video/graphics problem still exists
2 - Red Light of death is a COMMON problem
ill be buying this phone from ebay, and unlocking it for T-mobile (USA) since i wont be under AT&ts warranty, i have no way of knowing the RLOD will ever hit me.... so i cant exchange a dead kaiser/tilt
So i ask you tilt users to advise me...... thanks in advance
Will the data work on T-Mobile's 3G when they launch it this summer?
Is there any way to use the front facing camera (video call or some sort of messenger, whatever) on T-Mobile?
What about the push to talk- will that work on T-Mobile?
T-Mobile is so much cheaper than AT&T, and I really want a Kaiser, preferably an unbranded one with front facing camera...

Not a tilt user, mine is an o2 (UK) branded Kaiser. I was a HTC Universal user and loved that. What prompted me to upgrade (apart from the fact the upgrade was free!) was the intergrated GPS and larger memory. I'm very pleased with my little Kaiser in comparison to the size of the Uni and love having everything onboard.
But the million dollar question really is what do you use your Wizard for?
For me, it's a bit of Internet use (love Opera Mobile) over WiFi, ebook reading, PIM, MP3 player, email, skype over Wifi, gaming (but nothing much more intensive than solitaire). I use TomTom don't seem to suffer from the jerky graphics as much as others, and having the GPS onboard is priceless, cos I know that the 1 day I would really need it, I'd have left the external GPS at home with the Uni! I have watched some videos, but I've re-encoded them to a lower bitrate, yes the Kaiser does have issues with high bitrate video's. However on balance, the higher internal memory and integrated GPS means my Kaiser does everything my Universal did, only I don't have to worry about where I'm installing applications, or leaving things at home.
So whilst I am very happy with my purchase, I have noticed my device performs better than some at the tasks I use it for. So it's back to you to tell us what you want yours for!

Have they even confirmed with the rolling out of their "3g"?
well I use my phone for Im/Texting alot and GPS is another major application for me, I drive alot so its quite important for me, ofcourse at the end of the day im gonna use to make calls.
only thing im stuck on is wether i need the qwety keyboard or not
GPS is worth it
I use iGo 2006 and like it a lot. For me, the GPS is why the phone is worth it.
My complaints are that: the speakerphone is not good; the camera could be better and is useless in low light; no insurance offered by at&t; battery life, but I am used to it by now... needs a charge every few days or so depending on what you use (GPS will kill it quickly); the graphics problem is annoying, maybe programs like navigon would work smoothly but the phone is still worth it, I never use my video ipod to watch media because I don't like the small screen.
With WM6, I use SBSH software pocketbreeze for functionality and wisbar advance for looks. Most people care about the speed, but I'm happy with it. Oh yeah, Q-Mobile 1.2 has made the phone much more stable.
One last thing, I got mine for $75 after rebates but I would not have gone over $300. That's me though, some people have money and want a tech gadget that they can customize to their liking.
I upgraded to the Tilt from the 8125 a month ago and have been very pleased with my purchase. Obviously there will be risks of the thing bricking down the road, but you shouldn't let that scare you away from a purchase. If anything, that should be incentive for you to buy the HTC branded version of the phone and not the Tilt.
Just my opinion, but I would stay away from ebay too. The thought of buying fairly expensive electronics sight-unseen from an anonymous seller has always seemed kinda sketchy to me.
Love my tilt. The gps, 3G and faster processor was why i upgraded. I mostly use iGO , Flexmail, MSN, and Google Maps when I'm out. Sold my Wizard 8125 and picked up the tilt.... I have to say that i am very happy so far.
I've had the best phones of every carried in the MidEast area. Touch, Dash, BB Curve, MotoQ9h, and now the Kaiser. Its the best phone with the most available features. The ability to customize the phone in an endless number of ways makes this phones worth a lot more than it is. Even though the video displays aren't the best and worse than predecessors, its still a killer phone. Plus, you cant find a better community, in terms of developers and activity, than XDA. I say this because I was on a lot of there forums and I can say that the amount of intelligence here is amazing.
Get the kaiser and return it if your dont like it.

This is pretty much all I know about it:
http://www.phonenews.com/mwc-t-mobi...aunch-in-summer-possible-android-device-2739/
So sometime this summer.
Hi all
I have at the moment a MDA Vario II, basically, a Hermes device
and it is stupendously slow. i also have a Vario I and that seems to be quicker than the hermes in some tasks. like...sending a text message! it doesnt lag when im typing it actually keeps up with me
i have the opportunity to trade in my hermes, plus some cash on top to get a Kaiser and im just wondering how many other people have made that switch and what they thought of it speedwise
everyone says cooked roms are faster than official, but what id like to know is, when i push the 'talk' button, is there any lag whatsoever or is it near enough instant?!
many thanks
I dont know much about the Hermes. But I love my Kaiser/Tilt. Its a great phone and I havent had alot of the issues that others have had on theirs. Cooked ROM's can be faster but I run a stock ROM on mine and have all the apps that i need on it. I only wish I had a bigger SD card so I can add more...
I only used my hermes for a few months before upgrading and did try a good few cooked roms. To be honest there is no wow factor increase in speed, its just feels a bit smoother with a good rom on it and the inbuilt GPS is handy.
If you can get one cheaply enough do it at least you can still a hermes for a decent price at the moment it will be worth less the longer you leave it.
Hope that helps.
G
Do it!
Much better device... more Spped.. GPS.. more performance... more memory...etc...etc...etc... see this article... http://blog.evolvedsoftwarestudios....iimda-vario-ii-with-the-hermes-tytnmda-vario/

I had a Wizard (O2 Mini S, so equivalent of the Vario) which I considered inadequate. Maybe it was the ROM, maybe it was the hardware, but towards the end of the year I was looking forward to the upgrade.
I got a Hermes (O2 Trion, so the Vario II), it was faster and I prefered it to the Wizard hands down. However, I had an accident and broke mine and could only get the Kaiser (O2 Stellar, so Vario III) as a replacement and, having now used it for three months, I don't really consider it an upgrade.
If you are not going to use the GPS (I do not travel much), aren't desperate to have a 3Mp camera and are willing to flash new ROMs (WM6 gives you more storage on the SD card more easily than WM5), there isn't really anything (in my opinion at least) to make the upgrade worth while.
As-is, I will not be upgrading in June as there is currently nothing to upgrade to, and I doubt I would de upgrading if I was still with my Hermes as I would be more interested in what is coming in Q4 this year and the O2 sim-only contracts seem a lot better than the 12 month contracts.
Hi Guys
I'm thinking of upgrading my Polaris to a Diamond and just wondering if you guys are still happy with the Diamond and do ya think an upgrade from my Polaris is worth while.
The Diamond spec and looks seem brilliant but the only thing am a bit concerned about is the small 4gb memory it has, is this a problem or do you just learn to live with it.
Thanks
Tim
I never had a polaris, but this phone is brilliant, best phone available. IMO obviously. 4gb is LOTS of space. i have an ipod touch for all my music and video needs.
I am qualified to answer this one.... (hey, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while)
I've upgraded from an HTC P3600-> P3650->P3700. Each time the upgrade was better but I have to say when I upgraded to the Diamond, I love the phone but was sadly disappointed with it's speed.
Because of the processor, I thought I would get a faster phone.... it's terribly slow compared to the P3650.
In fact, I actually made a post this last Friday asking if there was any tweaking I could do to make it faster.
I ended up installing Duttythroy's new ROM and IT FLIES. All I can say is this phone now performs the way it should have from the factory.
I even did the #1 tweak on the top tweak list for the Diamond (a sticky) on top of his ROM and it seems even faster.
I hated clicking on the "people" tab and having to wait until my contact list would appear. I made that post Friday and if by tonight I hadn't been able to do something about it, I was going to put it on ebay and buy an iphone.
All I can say is I'm glad I installed the ROM. The memory usage is great, the 4g internal memory is plenty, the phone is slick and I really like it now.... by far the best phone I've owned.
You won't regret getting it.
Mark
PS. I sold my P3650 on ebay and got just shy of 500 bucks out of it.
I used the polaris for a short period and own quite a few WM smartphones over the last few years and I would definitely recommend the upgrade. Yes the tflo3d was somewhat sluggish before but now it's all changed. I am using bepes rom and it's as smooth as butter. The thing with diamond is, it keeps on getting better each day, thanks to xda dev and it's valuable contributers. As for the 4gb storage, I keep a lot of stuff in there (lots of apps, 100's of pics and mp3's and a few movies :s) and its only over half full.
Anyway find out all about the phone and decide if you want it or not. If possible try going to a store to test one out before you make up your mind. And oh yh, You will love the display, it's just too good.
Regards,
AF241
I don't even know what the Polaris is so can't say whether or not an upgrade is recommended but I came from the N95 and don't regret it a bit.
Some reasons to get a Diamond - High res screen perfect for browsing and films, a back button - very useful to backstep in any application, a Home button - Returns you to your Today screen instantly, a SCROLL WHEEL!!!! wow!!! zoom in and out of photos and web pages with ease and with reg files from here you can use it for your contacts and various other apps and the best thing about the Diamond... a great community here to help you with any issues and provide you with new apps/ROMS to try in the quest to find the best.
Yes... I've had my Diamond for 6 days now and it's the best Windows mobile phone I've had. Only downsides the good-looking but not customisable TF3D and the battery. However, with the extended one coming out (or out already?) it should be fine.
Go for it...
Thanks for the help guys I think am hooked now I just have to decide where to get one from.
T-Mobiles MDA Compact IV
O2 XDA Ignito (Out Soon)
Expansys HTC Diamond
Never bought a rebranded (MDA,XDA) PDA before so do you lose or gain anything with regards to hardware or software.
Software I’m not too bothered about as I’ll probably just upgrade my ROM from this forum anyway.
Thanks
Tim
Yes........
yes
you know it makes sence
Curious
I know that it's a bit off topic, but like the poster, I'm about to upgrade my phone.
And I've been using WM based devices for a looooong while, so I would like to keep using WM based phones.
Now apart from Diamond there are other phones out there with WM that came out recently.
Samsung Omnia i900
Toshiba Portege G810
Both use WM6.1 just like Diamond.
Now I don't know if there are any users here of the Samsung and Toshiba phones, but if there are...how would you compare Diamond with them?
Around threee months after the launch it still has many problems:
The interface is still slow.
The battery life is still poor.
The cover still collects fingerprints like a magnet.
The storage is still not upgradable.
... and it's still the BEST frikking phone on the market. If you're gonna upgrade, you really have no better choice.
Just a simple answer
Its the best upgrade
Need help deciding between HTC 8925(At&t Tilt/Kaiser) vs HTC Herald (Tmobile Wing)
So im looking to upgrade my phone soon. I currently use a Sidekick ID (Yes yes I know). Been a long time reader of the XDA forums so im looking for some expert advice from well, you guys(the experts). From my understanding the Tilt and Wing are pretty much the exact same phone with different carriers with the exception that the 8925(tilt) has double the ram speed and a faster cpu than the Herald(wing) as well as gps. Anyway the OBVIOUS choice is (Or at least I thought it was) the 8925(tilt). I proceeded to do some more research on the phone and soon discovered the Video Driver\No Hardware accelaration problem on those phones which was a huge turn off for me once I found out about it. As far as the Herald(wing) goes, it is obviously alot slower than the 8925(tilt) due to the slow cpu ,and freeing up memory is something that seems to be more of a tedious task that you have to do every so often. A friend of mine owns a Herald(wing) and he uses the OpenTouch Rom by Ttrans1 which is awesome and is definitely better/speedier than the stock rom. Anyway it seems to me that no matter which phone I get, I am taking a loss in some form or another. So I am here to ask you guys, would I be better off with a slow phone WITH proper video hardware acceleration (Herald/Wing) or a much faster Phone WITHOUT proper video hardware acceleration (Tilt/8925). Any advice, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
So really you shouldn't care about a no video driver issue. Sounds like your using Tmobile and the tilt can't use the tmobile 3g. So thats what I would think about. Get the android G1 and be the coolest hippest guy on the block.
Well that's a good idea but the problem is that I need to decide within the next week as I need this phone for work as they(the tilt and wing) have exchange mail server compability which I need. I will most definitely get the G1 or HD later on down the line but for NOW I need to decide between the wing and the tilt. Also, 3g is not a factor for me as I don't really care for it being that Edge serves my needs just fine for now and if I were to go the tilt route it would obviously be an unlocked phone being that I wil lbe using tmobile for it. So with that being said which would you recommend out of the two?
This is always my deciding factor when I think about cheating on my beloved Tilt. .
GPS for the win!!
That and it tilts, that is way cool and useful. Just tilt it up and wait for your next txt or email. You don't have to move sometimes.
The chicks love it when you tilt it, they say "oh let me see that, whats your name?"
NICE
LOL, yea the gps Definitely has me "Tilting" more towards the tilt. But quick question tho since you own a tilt yourself, is the Video driver/no video hardware acceleration problem that bad? Does it affect everyday use? Also does it affect any software that uses the GPS? Last but not least, are there any custom roms that at least improve the no video driver problem? Sorry for all the questions but I just want to be sure that I won't regret getting the tilt over the wing.
Anyone else here have experience with the tilt?
I don't find the video driver thing that much of a problem. Main thing I'd care about is very occasionally watching a move. I use DVD conversion software (from SPB) to convert them to files good for the phone, and it seems find for me.
Re: ROMS, I've tried others, which ultimately became 'unsupported' by the creator, and I'm back on the stock AT&T current rom, and it performs fine enough for me. Some features form teh custom roms I liked not here, but I'm not bothering to upgrade any more. I don't know about for video.
Using it for capturing video, or any other phone, is not of much value in my opinion.
The GPS I use (TomTom) works good. (Don't turn on a bunch of POIs, or it will get unusable). I purchased this phone specifically so I could have GPS, PDA, and phone all in one device. I love the GPS when I travel.
If you get one, be very careful with the USB port (plugging/unplugging). I've had to replace it twice due to the port going bad (I'm thinking likely, at least in one case, less than 'careful handling' caused it). But it is fragile, it seems.
The only issue I have with the video driver/camera seems to be that unless you are outside in a bright light situation... the unit can't effectively take a video. I wish this wasn't so... but otherwise I love the phone.
Of course, it was a lot worse when it was "just" and att tilt. I flashed dutty's diamond rom, installed scientific calculator, chess... etc. My geek factor has gone way up! I love this phone... but then again, I have nothing to compare it to.

Hahahaha, couldn't say it any much better
At first, i was really intimidated when i got my tilt. I didn't know much about coding, flashing, hacking, slashing, whatever you call it.
After a whole week of reading on this board i'd say the tilt is one of the best thing i ever gotten my hands on.
This phone, to any other ordinary person its just a phone with special features.
But under a person who knows about coding and programming, this phone isn't just a phone.
get the tilt, my friend has the wing and its horrible. The video drivers pretty much only affect the Camera. The tilt also has GPS and tilt screen.
Also, tzones 5.99 internet gets me everything at fast speeds. Gmail, MMS, Internet.
Ok well I think it might be time to upgrade from the Kaiser but I'm not sure just yet.
First of all my current phone is(my sig is not accurate):
ATT Tilt
HyperDragon 3 Opal ROM
1.71.09.01 radio
I am a power user on this thing and my number 1 problem is battery life. I cant make it half a day anymore nowhere close if I'm using the GPS or playing a game for a little bit. I know I could replace the battery(maybe with an extended run unit) but I think it might just be time to upgrade. This was one of the first ones on the market when they came out so its the longest I've had a phone in a few years.
The phone has seen a hardlife with some drops and such but it took the beating like a champ.
I still dont like that it is a bit laggy, has some freeze up issues, sometime the response to the keyboard is terrbile and only half of the message I type makes it to the screen(major pains as I am constantly email and texting), and the battery life.
I have been out of the scene for a while and am not on top of the new hotness so I figured I'd ask. I prefer a tactile keyboard(though I havnt tried any of the new touch screen only phones so I dont know what those keyboards are like), must sync with exchange. I use exchange and two pop accounts on my phone. a btter camera would be cool. Better battery life and overall smoother operation is a MUST! I'm hoping that with increased processing power the newer WM phone have improved but I jsut dont know.
I am not partial to HTC but so far they have proven the most reliable for me. The iphone is out of the question(even though I love the slick interface) because of a couple missing features.
I appreciate the help and recomendations.
hi,best way for you would be try most of them(htc),couse everyone has its own opinion.i got kaiser aswell, and i bought diamond few days ago,i felt like i was stuck somewhere in 90s with kaiser.

someone has got to perk up the economy though I'm just going to put a new battery for the time being. I really like the Xperia X1 but I'm not sure its the right choice so I'll hold out a bit more. Wait till I can get my hands on one.

You can have a read up on the X1 here at XDA and you'll find it also has it's problems and limitations. A new battery (or two) is a sensible and cheap solution for the time being. When I'm out on long days of GPS/Video Playback and Internet Browsing, I always take my 2 spare (regular size) kaiser batteries and that does the trick as I've yet to get through 3 batteries in a day.
I just effectively ended the life of my Tilt as a phone... I lost my stylus and got lazy. I ended up trying to use a paper clip to push the soft reset button when I wanted to put the phone into bootloader. Well I pushed too hard and ended up damaging the microphone. Now the only way I see of using it as a phone is to find my Moto S9's. I will finally use the upgrade option to the Wing II (Rhodium) on T-Mobile as it is finally getting a new WM PDA that will work on 3G. I think my area of Texas is also supposed to get 3G around the same time that the Wing II comes out. So I suppose it was a sign from above that I should upgrade. It has been three years with T-Mo and I haven't asked for any upgrades so I think I should now. I am still going to keep the Tilt for the games, apps and other things.
The HTC options are questionable right now. I recently purchased a G1 & a Touch Pro: the G1's lack of mature applications and generally PITA bugs (you can't mount the phone AND the SD at the same time?....REALLY? What year is this?). The Touch Pro is faster than the Tilt and has an amazing amount of ram, G-sensor is nice, but packing 640x480 in the same 2.8" screen that the tilt has means that you will be unable to fully utilize that resolution: things are just too small. Also, if you're a tilt fan, you WILL miss the ability to tilt the screen. As the touch Diamond has the same small screen as the TP *and* cannot take microSD cards, I don't consider it a serious contender.
So there you have it: I have sold off both the G1 and the Touch Pro and am just keeping my tilt until the Touch Pro II comes out. On that note, there were over 400 G1's on ebay when I sold mine: seems I'm not alone in being fed up with it.
