With AE Buttons Plus we can assign programs to the Home key and the Back key and such.
Latest multi-touch demons showed that these keys can sense our fingers even without applying force on them to press.
What I wonder is, can we program them to run certain applications by just moving our fingers on them? Wouldn't it be wonderful?
Somethin like:
swipe left - minimize
swipe right - start menu
swipe up - media player
etc. etc.

How can I disable these?? The keys above and between "I" and "O", and between "R" and "T"? I hate them. I type incredibly fast and happen to blunder on them at least once per message, email, etc...
I've tried to change my typing style, but that isn't 100% effective and only slows me down.
I would like nothing to happen when I push them. I also do not use the "soft" buttons above the IE and Mail buttons. I don't have issues with accidentally hitting them, though. But if they get disabled with the ones in the full keyboard, it won't bother me (not sure if they're tied together).
I only want the actual onscreen soft buttons to work. Can anyone help?
By the way, I went into Settings > Personal > Buttons, but only 6 are shown (not counting "push and hold").
There are a total of 13 buttons on this thing if you include the push button on the wheel, and don't count the keyboard mappings. 11 buttons if you count the front and inside soft buttons as only 2....
I am currently searching for a solution to the same problem for the same issue. I cannot even count how many times I have accidentally hit the send button when all I wanted was the letter.
I am not that an incredibly fast typist, though.
I use AE Button Plus and this allows you to remap all of the keys to other things as well as map one, two and three presses along with long press.
You could use this to remap one press of the softkey to nothing and two presses to activate the softkey. This would mean that you would have to press them twice to make them work, but would stop teh accidental presses.

Would that have the same affect on the "onscreen" soft buttons (touch screen).
I've just had a quick play and it appears to only affect the hardware buttons, which, I think, is what was originally wanted.
It's a good program, I use it a lot and it's FREE!
Is there nothing someone maybe found to disable these in the registry. I also hate these buttons too.
On my Fuze, I constantly hit the home button when trying to hit the left key, and is driving me nuts. Does anyone have any options for me to try? I'm even willing to disable the dang thing. Just don't know how.
I find very few reasons to hit the d pad keys, other than maybe up/down. Use your swipe gestures on the screen for left/right for most purposes... That's my best advice.
You can try G-Scroll, with that you just swipe you fingers on the touch panel at the bottom to move left, right, up, down and you can also launch apps
the problem is when I do have to use the d-pad. like a game that i'm playing "Peggle" it is very annoying when the game exits and I have to navigate to find the game shortcut, or use task manager. either way it happens all the time.
Can I use g-scroll in all applications?

I think, but I cost money
The Dpad is VERY annoying. My idea (which doesn't seem very popular) is to unmap the functions of the Home and Back button presses completely so they don't interfere with the dpad.
So we don't lose our Home and Back buttons, I suggested remapping the functions to the Home-HOLD and Back-HOLD functions.
This way the only time you actually would go home would be if you press and held the button for a second.
Unfortunately I don't think this is possible right now. The only way to remap the keys is via AEButtonPlus, which works but is clunky and has to run all the time. I'd much rather see a real remap
Or you can use DredSensor...
I am really happy with the Captivate with the exception of the bottom keys that are selectively responsive...especially the back key which often takes several presses to register just one. Since Android and many of the apps have menu designs that dig down through multiple pages, the back button is the one I use the most, and is seemingly the least responsive of the four, which is frustrating.
Is it possible to remap the side volume keys to use back/forward functions instead? It would really help when backing out of settings that can sometimes be several pages deep.
If this isn't possible, does anyone know if those capacitive buttons can have their sensitivity increased? (I rarely, if ever have issues with the menu and search buttons, it's mostly the back button, and sometimes the home button.)
Thanks!
With the advent of Nookie Froyo and rumors of CM7 only one thing makes me Pissed off as heck. HARD BUTTONS!!!!! Of course, we could map the volume buttons for these things, but I have a proposal/wish (Since I can't program --_--)
Is there anyone who could make a app so that long pressing a volume button would bring up or lower the volume, and tapping them slightly would trigger the back button or menu button? Or vice versa?
I think this would kill our needs for soft-keys or any annoying launcher stuff. Just a wish. tell me if this is possible plx
or... double tap them --_--
I don't program either, but I was just thinking about alternative methods too, since I find soft keys annoyingly unelegant as well. I like the remapping of the hard volume keys for long presses idea. Another option might be to take a play from the jailbroken iphone book where Activator can launch programs or perform system actions with gestures (swiping in from the top, or tapping the volume indicator box after voluming up/ down, etc) - sort of like how swiping left on the nook status bar goes back or how swiping down the left side of the screen in fbreader changes the brightness of the display. Could be a system wide action where swiping left at the bottom if the screen regardless of if the status bar is visible would go back while swiping right would invoke the menu...

hmm.. well, I guess I'll just have to stick with soft buttons for now. {presses the nook color home button to death}
Several Apps That I Use...
Have gestures that allow the functions that you folks mentioned. For example, Aldiko has a great brightness adjust by swiping down one side of the screen, and Dolphin HD has a lot of gesture-activated commands.
I'm not a programmer but some bright dev out there might be able to come up with the appropriate calls to allow gestures for volume - what about a poll?
I love the idea of softkeys. With it you can put bigger screens on smaller devices and they can disappear whenever needed to.
The main problem is that it's a 50/50% chance that they will disappear when I think that they should. With physical keys that's never an issue.
Movies, yes
Games, yes
Full screen applications, yes
etc.
What determines when the keys disappear and not? Is it up to the app creator? What can I do about it (I'm not rooted)?
They can't always disappear in full screen games. If the game needs a back button you would be stuck.
I assume there is something in there that tells it. Much like if an app does not have an on screen menu button (usually three dots), a menu button will be added to the lower right side of the portion of the screen where the soft keys are.
It's not there for all apps, only ones that don't have a menu button on screen. Not sure if this is declared by the app or if 4.4 can detect it somehow and show the button when needed.

On my tablet (running 4.1) I get these dots you are talking about (but not in the lower right corner, they replace the ordinary softkeys)). That's all fine because they take less space (from what I remember) then the ordinary softkeys.
If it all comes down to having a back button in the app, why not implement that in the app?
I downloaded crazy taxi yesterday and those softkeys are annoying me as hell.
I ended up getting used to using LMT and just turn on expanded desktop to make the navigation keys go away. That way if LMT gives me any trouble...I just hit the power button and turn off expanded desktop and my navigation keys are back. (Gravity box to get that option in power menu.)
Hated pie at first...but used to it now.
