Damn! Whilst making calls my phone get's pretty hot guys - I just hung up from a pretty long conversation and the little Diamond was toasty!
I know from other threads that this can happen, but how can you distinguish whether it's a serious problem or not?
My Diamond only seems to get hot while charging, and when using CPU intensive applications, not really during phone calls. But apart from that, I don't really think you have a serious problem, as I'm sure the folks at HTC have tested every aspect of battery while in use.
mine gets also pretty hot if phonecall lasts longer than 45 minutes
Yeah, join the DEFC (Diamond Eggs Frying Club).
In the manual it notes that the phone may become warm with prolonged use. I've had mine for about 3 weeks and it doesn't seem to cause any problems. However, I'm starting to suspect that the phone warming is what causes the battery meter to wig out. When it gets too warm, the percentage no longer drops. Then all of a sudden I'll lose 20% battery in 2 minutes when the phone has cooled back down.
I downloaded PowerGuard and have been watching the battery % in relation to temperature and I'm pretty sure there's a coorelation. If not, then this is the worst battery meter I've ever had on a phone. Basically, it's just a rough ballpark guess. Couple this with a crap battery to start, and it gets pretty frustrating...

is this normal for at&t tilt? I noticed that my phone gets really hot when i am using wifi. is it same with everyone else?
Hmmm, I would say getting warm to really warm is normal, but not really hot. Is it the stock battery and does the battery drain super fast when wifi is on?
Well, a combination of your hands constantly on it and WiFi on will warm up your phone a bit. It should be "warm" not "hot", I should also state.
I've used wifi on home lan, streaming Slingbox video for over 3 hours straight and I'd say warm, not Hot. I have on a very few occasions found that leaving WiFi ON and letting the Kaiser sleep, or powering it off that I've found it HOT and the battery depleted in short order, like 1 hour. I make it a point to purposely shut off WiFi when not needed as I have not been able to figure out what causes this occasional hang.
My first Kaiser died from heat exposure a week ago. It got really hot, the screen went white and it would not restart or anything. The Wifi & GPS was on at the time, running TT6 and on charge.
Replacement died 27 hours later with a whiteout screen without even getting the wifi running on it (not setup fully). On my 3rd inside a month now
When i use Music Player for about 30 mins, my X1 becomes very hot. Is this normal?
depends. The battery cover might feel hot because you're not used to having a metal cover (metal conducts heat way better than plastic). It shouldn't be "burning", though.
define 'normal.' lol but yeah pretty much
My battery also drains rather fast when listening to music too =[ I can probably get only 5-6 hours!
I've got to bring my iPod or an extra battery when I work out or else afterwards I'll be at half battery for the rest of the day!
hrmm.... one question for you guys... do you guys use exchange? coz I have found that activesync used to keep trying to sync the contact that I previous created on another... those contacts all have a pic attach to them and for some reason, x1 (or activesync) couldnt take them and therefore, activesync always had error, then I will feel my phone was very hot and the battery drained very fast
i've got my x1 just a few hours ago and have to say that the batt managed to go down from 100 to 60% from 9am to 4pm - and yes, i am using exchange sync over 3g and have played with the device only for a while;
can't imagine how some people squeezed 2 days out of this - unless my batt is bad;

Actually.. that happenned to me when I first got my Xperia.. my battery didn't last for more than 1 day, but now this is my 3rd day without touching the charger or connect my X1i to the PC..
I don't know why that weird behaivour of the battery, but believe me.. soon it's going to be normal to have enough battery for 2 o 3 days.
In terms of battery life with my X1i, I found that having FlexMail with IMAP IDLE enabled wouldn't allow the device to FULLY enter standby (it only turned off the screen). I wrote a MortScript to check my battery level and run/kill FlexMail depending on where it's at.
In terms of the battery heat, I recently put my phone through hell. I have a cradle in my car that's attached to the vent. The vent is 'closed', although heat does still leak through. I went snowboarding and drove 2 hours with the car heater/GPS/TomTom on, streaming music with CorePlayer, and always having the screen on. By the time my trip was over, the back of the phone was literally too hot to touch for more than 5 seconds. I started freaking out, but I was 5 mins away from home so I left everything connected.
Surely enough, this tank of a phone cooled down over time, but nothing was harmed. The Li-Po battery showed no signs of 'ballooning', so I think everything is cool. Not going to be doing this over and over though!
I have a strange problem when i reboot my diamond it looses 25-30% of the battery power. Anyone experienced this or have any solutions?
I heard someone put their battery in a freezer when they became sluggish. But i'm afraid to destroy the battery. Anyone tried this "solution" ?
I Had my diamond for 6 months now and i use it heavily every day.
battery life on mine isnt exactly great
never tried the freezer trick though! does it actually work guys?
Well
I have gotten used to the short battery life and have made it a good habbit of turning off bluetooth when i dont use it and i never use Wifi (its unuasble due to how fast it drains the battery. I hope i can soon afford a larger battery. 1800mPa isnt it?
But whats up with a reboot taking so much power? It didnt use to be like this, it started doing so some time ago.
Anyway i know a dude who puts camera batteries in freezer and he says it helps them. But i dont feel comfortable doing it yet until i hear more from people having done so with success.
I suggest a hard reset. Sometimes the calibration goes all awry; the battery isn't empty but the meter shows it to be empty, the phone thinks it's empty and shuts down. It's a software issue. Had this problem several times. The freezer never worked for me (did no harm, either).
Hmm... a hard reset, i will loose all those tons of settings i have and loads of programs installed ( No other solutions around? I will rather live with the problem than do a hard reset (tired of setting up everything from scratch)
The battery isn't losing power after a soft-reset, it's just that the battery meter gets re-calibrated. It's likely that the meter was reading too high before the reset and then started reading correctly afterwards - but I could be wrong. Battery meters are not an exact science. I'm not sure a hard reset will help but it can't hurt. I wouldn't bother personally.
Li-ion batteries should not be frozen. Putting the battery in a cool place will help a little, in that while the battery is cold, its 'aging' will slow. It will start to deteriorate (lose capacity permanently) at a normal rate when it warms up again.
There are plenty of articles on caring for Li-ion batteries on the web, for example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_ion_battery#Guidelines_for_prolonging_Li-ion_battery_life
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
I wouldnt suggest putting you battery in the freezer lol electronics and water wether frozen or not dont tend to mix lol
All these freezer tricks can only damage your battery. I think these tricks come from age of old Ni-something batteries, not the Li-something era.

Yeah, there's a lot of nonsense written about the wrong kind of batteries.
Re-reading that Wiki link, it looks like the way to fix the battery meter problem is to occasionally run the battery low. Also, the freezer won't damage the battery (unless it goes below -40 C) but the moisture might.
Thanks all for all the usefull info. Didnt know these batteries were killed so fasted. Because, comeon, who would really bother pulling out the battery of your device all the time and putting it in a refrigerator
I'm having the same problem with my TD, everytime I reset the device it looses anywhere between 10-30% charge.
Hard reset didn't fix the problem. has anyone find out what is wrong? could it be the phone???
tried a new battery and the same thing still happens.
My Diamond is a Brazil´s version (HSDPA 850 and 2100 mhz) and came with a 1340 mha. The first time i´ve used, it leasts 1 day. Then it took 12 hours to charge at 100%. I was worried with it but the second time it leasts 2 days and now it´s leasting 3 days with 1 hour of call per day and some time of internet, youtube, music... And the charging time is up to 3 hours now.
Maybe if you let your battery down to almost 0% and then charge it to 100%, the device would calibrate the battery meter.
Soft reseting the diamond will definitely suck some of your battery power. Remember it has to reload Windows, all the software, etc. I usually lose 5% but it could be as high as 10-15% in some situations.
20-30% seems a little high, but the general rule is, don't reset your diamond unless you absolutely need to, unless you're at home with the charger nearby.
hello, is it a common problem? or is there a problem with mine? Not actually very hot, but hotter than the room temperature
I have the same thing, especially if the handset is charging through USB from my laptop.
I don't recharge from USB as I've read that it is bad for the battery. Again, not very hot. Also slightly hot when using UiFi for a very long time, or playing a lot. I guess it's normal. Being used a lot ... :-? I don't know, just asking
Hi georgeono,
I can't remember how to disable charging on connectivity to the PC. Can you please point that out to me?
Many thanks,
Ayman
Hey, I already found it. Don't bother yourself )
It's Settings -> All Settings -> System Tab -> Power -> Battery Tab
And why would charging through USB be bad??
well, to make a good charge, you should leave the phone 5-6 hours (even though the led is green, I let it even up to 10 hours (charging at night)). When at PC, I don't think you all the time keep the phone pluged. In order to make a good charge, the battery has to be nearly empty (new phones work well without this waiting, but still, in time ... you see the differences). And I don't think anyone waits for his phone to be empty to connect via USB. .
I previously had an SE 850i (4 years used). Always charged when battery was empty, charged about 6 hours, and now, in stand-by, the battery resists 10-11 days. That is something ... 4 years!!!
It's normal, the battery heats up when under heavy use/if charged. It's nothing to worry about
Thanks. Had the same opinion, but still asked. never know ...

This is a myth for lithium rechargeables
Lithium type batteries do not mind when they are charged, and topping them up is perfectly fine. Topping up little but often is probably going to extend the life of the battery if anything and not reduce it, why? The biggest killer of lithium type batteries is heat, and giving it a charge from nothing to the maximum means it gets opportunity to get very warm which ages it, whereas lots of little charges will not up the temperature nearly as much.
Also another myth, you can't damage lithium batteries by overcharging them, this is because the current is stopped when they are fully charged as if it wasn't they would explode!
Lithium batteries also have a use by date, and as soon as they are made they start to age and reduce in capacity, so you are better off using and abusing the battery to get as much from it as you can, as age and heat will probably kill it first.

Phil
My device is very hot when charging... Much hotter than my Touch Pro2 gets
i experienced a few times that my compact V (topaz model from T-mobile) freezes while using navigation software in the car, meanwhile charging... When i took my phone from the holder, it was extremely hot! After holding it in front of the airco for a while and restarting, everything worked fine again. Anyone else with the same problem?
I found out, that using GPS uses the battery extremely.
It drains with about 300 mA, while normal usage ist at <70-80 mA and standby even a lot less.
Additionally I found out, that the device becomes sluggish due to processor-Usage of nearly 100% (while using gps).
That might be what you are seeing.
Regards Thorsten
talking about GPS usage, when ever i'm on iGo when i minimize it to make a phone call, it doesnt connects. i had to exit iGO n wait a while before it is available to dail. or a quick soft resets solve it.
any of u have the same problem?

similar problem here - igo gets disconnected from gps receiver because it's getting hot !
I am facing some weird issue with my Nexus One. At least once a day my phone shuts down all of a sudden! The battery drains out completely (0%). Actually I had fully charged the phone only sometime before the shutdown happened. It keeps on happening. Then I have to charge the phone for a long time. It is completely normal. This has happened even sometimes when the phone is in my pocket! It happens in air-conditioned rooms and when it shutsdown, the phone is not hot. Could it be a hardware problem? It happens consistently with every ROM and kernel (even with nandbackups which used to work properly a few months back). This is really annoying. My phone is out of support and I cannot send it back to Google as well.. Any help?
Did this problem start just recently? If so, you might be facing the same thing as nir0th and I, described in this thread.
My battery had always been quite good, and a few days ago it started draining very quickly. I've not been able to figure out what's causing it.
Drastic battery drain is different.. I am having something else.. The battery charge would be something like 60% to 65%.. The next second it becomes 0% and the phone shutsdown instantaneously.
That could mean that your battery is badly calibrated but I doubt it because one usually it won't be that major of a difference and two when you drop to 0% and charge back to 100% multiple times it should fix it so I will say it's hardware and it's dropping power somewhere either an internal part or the battery isn't holding a charge so I would get a new battery cause it's allot cheaper then if that doesn't work send it to htc.
Since the phone is no longer reliable, I started using another phone. Interestingly, the phone does not have any issues without SIM card! It just stays on for around 2 or 3 days without issue. Everytime I put the SIM card, the phone shutsdown in like 5 mins..
Could this be a problem with the battery or some other internal part? I have to tell one more thing. A few days before I started seeing this problem, I forget to take my phone with me from my car to office once. It was around lunch time when I came to pick it up. It was peak of summer (in New Jersey!) and the phone was like burning when I touched it. I wrapped it in a piece of cloth because it was so hot. I guess that is what is causing the problem....
I would be glad if this is only a battery problem
Thanks for all the comments.. Looks like it was a battery issue. I got my replacement battery yesterday. It's around 20 hours and the phone is running solid. Keeping my fingers crossed! I hope this is all for this issue...
